The state of sampling practice in South African minerals industry must be appreciated in the context of the changes that the country has recently lived through. These include the entrepreneurship and investment in local mineral developments, the 'unbundling of mineral assets', the rising foreign control of South Africa's mineral assets, developments in the regulatory environment, and the training that has come to the industry through international experts. In terms of their financial contribution the five most important commodities in the South African mining industry include gold, platinum, non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, and coal. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards form the basis for international trade in two of these commodities and have had a steadying influence on sampling practice over the years. The contribution of the minerals industry to the economic well-being of South Africa and the strong financial links between good sampling practice and minerals marketing, has acted as a driver for improved sampling practice. The state of sampling practice at mining operations of the five main commodities was found to be quite widely divergent with 'pockets of sampling excellence' in each of the commodities. The stages of mineral development at mines for each of the commodities have been described in terms of the sampling sites, sampling mechanisms, and associated problems at different stages of mineral production from exploration, through face sampling, blasthole sampling, and in-mine grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical subsampling, process subsampling, and subsampling in the laboratory. In each case the principal errors were identified and their potential impact on value erosion was estimated. In the final analysis it is evident that the greatest problems arise in the early stage of mineral development, and that ferrous metals and coal are particularly susceptible to loss of value through poor sampling practice. Several examples of value lost through poor sampling at the marketing stage that arise from breaching contract specifications, either in terms of grade or sizing, are described. The conclusion is that larger companies with larger ore deposits and greater human, financial, and capital resources are probably more compliant with 'best sampling practice' than smaller companies. Finally the message that equipment suppliers are sending is that business is booming and the awakened awareness of the issues around sampling practice are translating into rands and cents spent on improved sampling equipment.

ABSTRACT' The first references to gold in New Guinea were by the Portuguese in 1525. The first significant discovery and gold rush was on Sudest Island in 1888 and was a natural extension of the rush that surged up Australia's eastern coast and ended at cook- town. Prospectors made a series of minor discoveries in coastal regions before the first large discovery at Wau/Edie Creek/Bulolo in 1925. Major post war gold discoveries were made at Bougainville, Frieda River, Porgera and Ok Tedi. On Misima Island a large bulk low grade deposit has been recognised surrounding old gold workings. Gold exploration has increased drama- tically since the lifting of a 3 year moritorium on new exploration areas in Noverrber 1982. A new bulk low grade gold discovery has been made on Lihir Island, north of Bougainville and a number of other promising areas are being drilled. Gold production is also expanding dramatically from current levels of 600,000 ounces to an anticipated 1.3 million ounces in 1985 with the opening of Ok Tedi. Other potential developments are likely to increase output above 2 million ounces by 1990. Papua New Guinea's world ranking as a producer is likely to move from 9th to 7th in 1985 reflecting the favourable geological potential, stable political environment and attractive development terms offered by the Government.

The introduction of digital technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled many high bandwidth applications to be adopted by mines.Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards allow for many applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One important application has been tracking personnel and equipment via RFID tags. This tracking application has in turn formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System (PDS) or Collision Avoidance Systems (CAS). The paper discusses the growth in digital technology as the communication backbone in underground mines which has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ that has been occurring in the general business world to be available to underground mine operators. Then the paper will focus on the use of the technology in the increasingly important are of risk control around mobile plant underground. The specific use of digital devices for proximity detection, in both hard rock and coal mines, to provide a system that can deliver an additional level of control to the risks associated with people-vehicle interactions underground is discussed. The initial implementation of PDS in the hard rock mining environment is based on two zones of detection, required for large and relatively high speed vehicles. Information will include:•the principles of the underlying technology,•installation learnings and effectiveness, and•change management methodology and issues.The most recent development to integrate Mine Site Technologies (MST) PDS with Frederick Mining Controls’ HazardAvert® System to extend the overall Proximity System’s functionality in hard rock mines and for use in coal mines is overviewed.

This paper presents an overview of the current status of mine water management in South Africa. The regulatory framework within which mine water management operates is set out, based on the principles and policies embodied in the relevant legislation. The status of the gold and coal mining industries, with regard to water management, is presented on the basis of studies that have been undertaken to develop water and salt balances for these industries. While the data is not available to quantify the status of ARD in South Africa, the range of typical mine water quality problems faced by South African gold and coal mines is presented. The status quo, problems and challenges relating to mine water management are presented and discussed. It is shown that, while there have been major strides in the last decade, and mine water management and treatment in South Africa has moved onto the forefront of mine environmental management, important problems still persist. There is still a significant amount of improvement required, particularly in the field of prediction of water quality deterioration and the application of such predictions to the identification of management actions that can be applied to prevent or minimise mine water pollution in the shortmedium- and long-term.

Despite extensive oil exploration in"Western Australia over the past 12 years no commercial oil fields have yet been found. A total ' of 66 test wells have been drilled throughout the State but only Rough Range No.s.. 1 and 1A have produced oil in significant quantities. Active oil exploration is now in progress in the" Canning, Carnarvon, Perth, Bonaparte Gulf and Officer Basins. Test wells have been drilled' in ,all of these except the Officer Basin, where the subsurface stratigraphy is still unknown. Large .areas of the other four have hot yet been drilled. It, is- probable that. commercial oil deposits will eventually be found' in these basins as they contain thick marine sequences, and have structures 'suitable for.,the. entrapment of oil. .

In October 2005 Phelps Dodge mining, a US based company, visited several Australian mining companies and mine sites to ascertain the current applications of risk management methods in the organisation. The results of this review, documented by the author, indicated a ælayeredÆ approach from high level site or major hazard analysis through to face level, æstop and lookÆ, methods. The approaches of several companies were summarised in one simple layered model. This model is helpful to other sites and companies to identify potential improvements but also offers an image of best practice that may assist with the governance of OH&S by both company boards and community regulators. The issue is particularly relevant as we discuss national consistency in mining regulation. This paper examines the layered model, the company and site approaches that helped define the model, as well as the suggested implications of the layered model to governance.

Traditionally trucks have dominated haulage in open pit mines. Only recently have conveyors begun to be used in the long haul and high lift duties of surface mines. Steep angle conveyors are proven versatile systems for elevating or lowering materials continuously at steep angles to 90¦. This paper describes the design of a bucket-type steep angle conveyor that was developed as a joint research project between the Western Australian School of Mines and the Maanshan Institute of Mining Research in China. The steep angle conveyor can be used as a viable option for transporting blocky ore from open pit mines. A pilot conveyor was constructed and tested to determine its technical and operational feasibility. Furthermore, a computer model based on Matlab mathematical modelling software was developed to simulate the performance of the pilot conveyor. The model enabled to determine the design parameters of industry-scale conveyors to yield satisfactory performance. These conveyors become very cost-effective for those mines having large mine lives and depths greater than about 500 metres.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

BlIP Minerals is a large, diversified, international mineral producer. This paper describes the company's operating strategy, and identifies the role of mineral processing in this strategy through three examples: the column flotation installation at Escondida in Chile, the leach-SX-electrowinning plant, proposed for Escondida, and the whole-ore roasting process being constructed for the Syama gold operation in Mali. It is concluded that the application of appropriate and sometimes novel mineral processing technologies can achieve significant benefits in reduced operating cost, improved product quality, and in some cases the exploitation of previously uneconomic deposits, thereby providing strategic advantages to the company.

The stratigraphic sequence west of Mount Isa contains the Judenan Beds, Eastern Creek Volcanics, and May Downs gneiss. It is an incomplete sequence as major north-south faults divide the area into four separatezones containing portions of these different units. The first three zones, which occur directly to the west of the Mount Isa Fault, consist of quartzites and quartz-mica schists which are uncorrelatable between zones but have been grouped together as the Judenan Beds. The most western zone contains an incomplete section of Eastern Creek Volcanics which rests conformably on a unit believed to be equivalent to the Mount Guide Quartzite; this is again underlain by the May Downs gneiss. A detailed description of the rock types is presented, but only a broad stratigraphic correlation is possible with the very much thicker sequence to the east of Mount Isa.The age of sedimentation is believed to be Lower Proterozoic and it may not occur in the type of geosynclinal basin envisaged by previous authors.This sequence is intruded by many small basic intrusions and also the Sybella Granite with its associated microgranite and pegmatites. The Sybella Granite consists of both a massive and a foliated phase; the latteris generally restricted to the margin of the main granite mass.Four regional metamorphic zones have been identified on the basis of their pelitic mineral assemblages; these are a chlorite, biotite, biotite-cordierite, and a sillimanite zone; separating each are prominent north-south faults.This metamorphism is a regional metamorphism which accompanies the first generation folding of the area and is not associated with the emplacement of the Sybella Granite. A very localized retrogressive metamorphism is also found in some areas of second generation folding.

The production of stabilised backfill at mine sites commonly uses Portland cement as the binder. Calcined gypsum has cementing properties and is cheaper to produce than cement. This paper discusses the strength of fills stabilised with calcined gypsum. Laboratory tests were carried out on specimens prepared from tailings obtained from four different sites to allow for the wide variety of tailings found in practice. The results show that the gypsum-based fills can achieve a strength of 1 MPa using around two and a half to four times the corresponding amount of cement.

With increasing depth, stresses and stress phenomena are becoming more important considerations in Australian coal mining.A large number of compressive and tensile strength tests was made on coal and rock cubes cut from samples taken in various Australian collieries. In addition, an empirical impact strength test was carriedout on fragments of the same samples, to obtain a correlation with compressive strength.In one colliery, flat-jack measurements were taken to assess stresses in coal ribs and in the roof.INTRODUCTIONBy world standards, some of the New South Wales collieries are approaching depths of cover considered a maximum for bord and pillar the normal Australian coal mining method. Several South Coast collieries are winning coal at depths of about 1500 ft., and future operations are being planned at deeper cover. Glass-reinforced polymer bolts, commonly known as fibreglass dowels and fibre-reinforced polymer or plastic bolts or plastic dowels are increasingly applied for strata reinforcement in mines as well as in concrete reinforcement in civil engineering. The most popular dowels used in coalmines are the 22?mm diameter fully threaded type. Fibreglass and plastic bolts are cuttable, easy to handle, lightweight and corrosive resistant. A series of tests were undertaken to evaluate various strength properties of fibreglass dowels. These included tensile failure tests by the double-embedment method, a single guillotine shear test and a double shear test, carried out on dowels installed in concrete blocks, and with punch shear tests. Punch shear tests were used to evaluate the dowel shear strength parallel and perpendicular to the fibreglass strands or elements direction of extrusion. The study found that the tensile strength of the 22?mm diameter fibreglass dowels was in the order of 30?t. In the shear testing, the peak shear load was influenced by the encapsulation grout type and the level of fibreglass axial pretension. The evolution of economic precious metal and copper-gold deposits in high-level igneous terranes is dependent on very efficient fluid focussing. This is most readily achieved by contemporaneous deformation, igneous intrusion and hydrothermal activity. Mineralisation in these environments generally occurs in fault and fault-vein arrays developed in the cover sedimentary and volcanics sequences above older regional scale fault systems. Such reactivated fault systems are particularly prone to developing tile complex fracture arrays, extreme local dilation and dramatic increases in permeability that are necessary to efficiently focus hydrothermal fluid and produce large mineral deposits. The arc systems of tilePacific rim are typically structurally and tectonically complex. At any given period in the evolution of an arc system, it may be dominated by extensional, compressional or strike-slip deformation. Indeed, it is common for the tectonic environment to change repeatedly through the development of a single arc segment. As a result, structures formed in one tectonic environment are commonly complexly reactivated in quite different environments later in arc evolution. These complexly reactivated structures have greater potential to localise extreme fracturing, dilation and fluid flux than primary structures. Application of this knowledge to practical exploration requires an understanding of the primary geometry of the controlling fault systems, the fault movements during reactivation, intrusion and mineralisation, and the consequent location and geometry of dilational sites. Simple 2D lineament analysis and targeting on lineament intersections does not suffice. Chemical processes that results from structurally focussed fluid flow may also contribute to permeability enhancement and further enhance fluid flux. Two main types of chemical feedback are important. The first involves selective dissolution of minerals during alteration and tile consequent production of increased porosity and permeability. The second occurs where alteration changes the mechanical properties of tile rock mass, especially where it leads to a greater propensity for fracture (eg by silification). In near-surface environments (< ~1 km), geomorphic processes complement fault systems in focussing fluid flow to develop sub-horizontal bodies of mineralisation, such as the giant Ladolam gold deposit (>42 million ounces of gold).   Along with classification schemes which stress crustal level, host rocks and alteration assemblages, the styles of high level 'epithermal' and reated deposits must also be considered in respect of their controlling co-active fault structures. Such structural understanding, combined with understanding of tile chemical processes involved (eg host rock reactivity), provides a major tool for exploration particularly in terrains obscured by deep weathering. Geological interpretation based on integration of field mapping with magnetic, radiometric and other remotely sensed imagery provides a powerful complementary tool to the traditional geochemical and geophysical targeting techniques. Timely and effective geological input is capable of reducing exploration risk and providing a more cost-effective basis for drilling and development. Examples of deposits associated with fault reactivation in extensional, compressional and strike-slip settings within arc systems are discussed in this context.
