The papers in this section of the conference and indeed the conference as a whole will rightly focus on the recent û the state of play around the Pacific Rim. However, to set the scene I propose to take a longer-term perspective. In so doing I wish to illustrate and emphasise that change is normal and natural û to paraphrase Bob DylanÆs 1963 classic, æThe times they are (always) a-changinÆ Æ. The challenge is how to cope with such change, in an industry, a corporate and a personal sense. A further challenge for geologists, both exploration and mine-based, and indeed for anyone, is to understand where they fit in the broader picture. For several reasons it is appropriate first to look briefly at the minerals industry in the Pacific Rim around a century ago. It was here in Adelaide in April 1893 that the first general meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers (or The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy as it later became) took place and where the Centenary Meeting was held in 1993. The late 1800s and early 1900s was a period of extraordinary change in the minerals industry regionally and worldwide. The industry benefited from the economies of scale provided by improved mechanisation. It further benefited from the introduction of technically qualified professionals, such as chemists, metallurgists and mining engineers, although the usefulness of geologists had yet to be recognised commercially. With the rise of such professionals, technical societies formed and flourished. At the same time international financial markets and trade were expanding, a gold standard was widely supported and the financing of mining ventures was well established. Mining was an international business and its people travelled widely. As a consequence of the better-educated mining professional, the ready exchange of knowledge and the availability of finance, new processing techniques such as pyritic smelting, the cyanide process and flotation were developed. These, together with much improved materials handling in the mining and processing phases, dramatically changed the economics of the minerals industry.

The eruption 75,000 y ago of the Younger Toba Tuff ignimbrite and associated ash-fall ranks as the greatest known volcanic event of the past million years. The ignimbrite is known to cover 21,000 km2 (it may extend farther under alluvium of the coastal plain) and forms a low-angle depositional shield centered on the Lake Toba caldera. The ignimbrite is largely nonwelded and shows systematic outward decreases in lithic and crystal contents and clast sizes. Coarse lithic lag breccias that occur at places 85 km apart point to two or more vents on a fissure having this length. The extensive associated ash-fall traceable as far as Malaysia and India is evidently a co-ignimbrite ash but could have a phreatomag-matic component. The Lake Toba caldera measures95 x 35 km and is >1 kn deep. It is not a single caldera but comprises several contiguous depressions and grabens diversified by two re-surgent domes. Earlier parts of the caldera are related to at least two earlier ignimbrites including the Older Toba Tuff dated by Chesner at 0.5 Ma. The caldera is elongated parallel to, and is only 25 km from, the great Sumatra strike-slip fault, and it can be considered almost certain that the caldera is in part a kind of pull-apart structure. The ignimbrites are very crystal-rich. There is no reason to think basaltic magma was involved in their emplacement. Together with ash-falls they have a total volume of several thousand cubic kilometers. They can be categorized as originating from partially crystallized granitic magmas that erupted because tectonic pull-apart occurred several times across the pluton. Small rhyolitic lava domes on fault-lines comprise the youngest volcanic products.

Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as Zone C, is a measured 440,000t @ 17g/t Au and 46g/t Ag with an additional indicated resource of 120,000t @ 16g/t Au. A diatreme breccia localised at an intersection of structures, and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are highly indicative of a porphyry association. Typical epi-thermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing. platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineral-isation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100m strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralising fluids were sourced from the diatreme margins and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting. Potential for more ore remains within the Gufinis and the 120 veins as well as in the outlying Prospects.

The Tonkolili banded iron formations (BIF), Sierra Leone, host extensive iron ore deposits which are of economic signifi cance to the seaborne iron ore trade. The deposits are dominated by a strategic JORC compliant mineral resource of 11.6 Bt grading 30.1 per cent Fe comprised of primary magnetite mineralisation in the form of a fresh metamorphosed BIF featuring a uniform mineral assemblage of quartz-magnetite ± ferro-silicate minerals. Pilot plant metallurgical test work has demonstrated that the production of a magnetite concentrate is achievable using the established beneficiation techniques of magnetic separation and flotation. The concentrates arehigh-grade, and suitable for blast furnace or direct reduced iron pellet feed. The major challenge facing the development of such magnetite deposits at industry competitive production rates is the significant capital investment required for process plant and associated infrastructure.Two well-developed weathering zones exist within the deposits, and are associated with the progressive development of a tropical weathering profile overprinting the primary BIF. These zones feature a near surface hard indurated duricrust up to 60 m thick, and a soft progressively developed saprolite between duricrust and fresh BIF. These zones have been found to be amenable to producing iron ore products including DSO lump and sinter fines from the duricrust, and concentrate from the saprolite. Mineral resources sufficient to support commercial production of such iron ore products were defined by an intensive exploration program in 2010.African Minerals Limited has developed a three phase production strategy to progressively self fund the development of the Tonkolili strategic magnetite project by:• commencing a Phase I 12 Mt/a DSO operation in Quarter 4 2011,• increasing production in Phase II to 35 Mt/a with the commissioning of a saprolite beneficitation plant and associated infrastructure upgrades, and• developing a 45 Mt/a Phase III operation producing high-grade magnetite concentrate.The comparatively low capital and operating costs of a duricrust DSO lump and sinter fines operation coupled with its proximity to ground surface make it highly attractive for the generation of early cash flow for the Tonkolili project. Revenue from this early production may be used to selffund the subsequent development of phases requiring progressively more significant beneficiation plant and infrastructure.

The Tooloom gold field is located within the New England Fold Belt in the far northeast of New South Wales, approximately 130 km south southwest of Brisbane. Gold was first discovered at Tooloom in 1857. Within a few years up to 10 000 people were mining placer gold deposits in the Tooloom valley and a few tried their hand at mining hard rock occurrences as well. Mining of alluvial gold continued in a small way at Tooloom until very recently, but only in the last few years, since Malachite Resources acquired its interest at Tooloom (now 100 per cent), has the full potential of this large, reduced intrusion-related gold field been appreciated. By the mid 1870s, once the alluvials were largely worked out, most of the early miners had made the 270 km trek north to the newly discovered Gympie gold field and Tooloom slipped into obscurity. Such was this obscurity that the Tooloom gold field was not recorded on published Government geological maps until 2001, four years after Malachite became involved. The many hard rock prospects that Malachite has identified in recent years were largely or completely unknown. Tooloom is a good example of blinkered thinking when it comes to modern mineral exploration. The New England province in NSW has long been the æpoor relationÆ to the much better known and more highly favoured Lachlan Fold Belt in NSW. It has also suffered serious neglect compared with the Queensland part of the New England Fold Belt that hosts such major gold deposits as Mt Morgan (>7 Moz), Gympie (>3 Moz) and Cracow (>1 Moz). Tooloom is proof that prospective geology does not stop at state borders.

Increasing contamination/impurity levels (including arsenic, antimony, mercury etc.) of concentrates is an issue of global commercial and health / environmental significance. With increasing environmental pressures at smelters, penalties for contaminants in concentrates continue to rise, accompanied by lower reject limits. There is a strong incentive for miners to investigate alternative means to remove contaminants in order to increase the value of complex ores and concentrates. This paper discusses the global problem of contamination in complex ores and concentrates, how the Toowong Process technology is a potential solution to this problem, and the opportunities this technology brings to the business of dealing with deleterious elements. Gold mineralization belt of eastern China in the adjacent part of the northwestern Pacific rim is orientated NE to NNE and as-sociated with Mesozoic faults and igneous intrusives and Mesozoic to Cenozoic volcanism and subvolcanism extending more than 3000 km in length and 300 to 800 kni in width affected by the movement from the Pacific Plate subducted against the Asian Plate.The relative movement between the Pacific and the Asian plates give rise to two types of fracture zones, the tensional ones providing the space for the formation of fissure-filling type of auriferous quartz veins and the shear zones providing the space for the formation of hydrothermal replacement type of gold de-posits in Shandong Peninsula. The fissure filling type of quartz vein, is represented by Linglong gold deposit which is hosted in Mesozoic Linglong Granite and consists of hundreds of quartz veins filling fractures trending NE to NNE and the hydrothermal replacement type is represented by Sanshandao gold deposit which is hosted in crushed and hydrothermally altered Mesozoic Linglong Granite in contact with Archaean metamorphic complex of Jiaodong Group along a Mesozoic upthust fault zone trending NE.

The torsion test is considered as the best test used when the part is subjected to static or dynamic torque. Many published papers have investigated the torsion of non-heat treated metals. However, very few published papers dealt with the torsion behaviour of heat treated metals. The aim of this work was to study the effect of heat treatment on the torsion behaviour of steel alloy (AISI 01), which can be used for manufacturing small and medium drills, taps and reamers. The diameter of specimens used was 15 mm. The metal used was heat treated under different conditions, then torsionally tested. The results of torsion test were divided into two groups: results obtained during elastic limit from which the shear stress, shear strain and modulus of rigidity were calculated, while from the results obtained during plastic limit the plastic depth was calculated by applying derived equation when the angle of twist was more than yield value. The results obtained indicated that the value of hardness alone is not sufficient to establish heat treatment conditions. Rather, it was found that the determination of plastic depth together with hardness can help in the establishing of the optimum condition which was hardening temperature of 820¦C, hardening time 20 minutes and tempering temperature 220¦C. This condition produces hardness of 60 HRc and plastic depth of 2.5 mm.

The presence of residual cyanide in mine tailings and fill sands may, under specific circumstances, lead to acute and/or chronic cyanide poisoning of the environment and individuals. In this paper, the nature of cyanide contained in mine tailings is discussed, along with the circumstances under which such cyanide would become a hazard. A number of methods for cyanide degradation are reviewed in the paper, with special emphasis being placed on biological degradation (due to its low costs and the non toxic nature of the degradation process itself). Recommendations are made as to the best methods of setting up a biological degradation system, for use in mining Situations.

"The Waihi Gold Mine (WGM) operated by OceanaGold New Zealand Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the OceanaGold Corporation of Australia. Traditionally WGM has stockpiled and processed separate campaigns of open pit and underground ore. The ore is processed via a conventional semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) / ball circuit (SABC). The low aspect SAG mill operates in a closed circuit with two 20" cyclones, whilst the ball mill is also a closed circuit with a 10" cyclone cluster. A major wall movement in April 2015 ceased open pit operations indefinitely, 18 months ahead of the mining plan. This immediately reduced the forecast mill tonnage leaving two options: begin campaign milling or change the operating strategy and target lower throughput. Additional cost pressures necessitated improved milling cost efficiency. The immediate ore restriction limited processing alternatives to within the existing major infrastructure. Available comminution circuit survey data laid the foundation for developing a comminution model using the JKSimMet™ software package (version 6, created by KJTech). A number of flow sheet variants were then evaluated based on predicted throughput and efficiency. The comminution models suggested opportunities for improved efficiency lay in reducing throughput and increasing utilisation rather than on/off campaign milling under the existing operating philosophy. A series of process alterations followed, delivering new cost efficiencies that maintained the current $/t processing cost. The only simple sulphide mineral of antimony of importance is stibnite, SbS3, containing 71·8% antimony when pure. It is lead-grey, has a densityof 4·5 to 4·6 and melts at 546°C. It is both friable and sectile (Hardness 2 on Moh's scale) and, as a result, slimes very readily during milling.It is commonly associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite other minerals occurring with stibnite in minor quantities are chalcopyrite, galena, and scheelite. The latter mineral occurs in sufficient quantity at the Yellow Pine Mine, Stibnfte, Idaho, to justify the production of a scheelite concentrate.Stibnite mayor may not contain gold. Other minerals such as pyrite or arsenopyrite may contain gold. At Wiluna at the main mine nearly all the gold is asociated with arsenopyrite the stibnite being almost free from gold, whilst at the Moonlight Mine both arsenopyrite and stibnite carry gold.The mineral, tetrahedrite, which is a complex sulphide of copper and antimony; must also be considered an economic source of these two metals.Part of the copper may be replaced by iron, zinc; silver; or mercury, whilst part of the antimony is often replaced by arsenic.CLASSIFICATION OF ANTIMONIAL GOLD ORESFor the purposes of this paper antimonial gold ores may be conveniently classified as follows: CLASS 1. Ores from which a satisfactory gold extraction may be obtained by fine grinding, followed by cyanidation and which contain insufficient antimony to justify tIie production of an antimonial concentrate.CLASS 2. This paper describes the technique developed by the Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories (ACIRL) for the treatment of bore core samples to obtain data for coal preparation studies of the target reserves. The particle size distribution within the sample has a significant influence on the relationship between the yield and ash per cent of the floats coal at any ash level. The size analysis within the reconstituted feed from a coal preparation plant is determined by the size analysis of the feed coal, physical degradation of material in the process, and the breakdown of associated shales in water. The extent of material breakdown was studied in the ACIRL coal preparation pilot plants. The method of bore core evaluation includes simulation of this breakdown in a sample selectively crushed to conform with predicted or known run-of-mine size distribution. Modifications have also been made to the laboratory methods for froth flotation to approximate more closely with industrial practice.

A study has been made into the influence of feed size distribution on the flotation response of coal. The results show that a full description of the flotation response of a coal must not only consider the inherent floatability of the coal, but also, the size distribution of the feed to flotation. The performances of a number of flotation circuits were compared using a coal which was "poorly floating" because of its size distribution. Split feed flotation, two stage reagent addition, and reflotation of classified tailings all gave better yields than that obtained by conventional single stage flotation. The optimum flotation circuit for the washing of the coal in question, was reflotation of classified tailings.

The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder. The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.

As requested by my fellow members I shall endeavour to read a paper on the Treatment of the Auriferous Sulphide Ores of Kalgoorlie from a metallurgical standpoint. Before going into the subject it will be necessary for me to make some slight explanations. As most of you are aware many of our London friends holding interests in some of these mines think it necessary that their doings should be shrouded in mystery. The result of this is that in some cases it is impossible to get any official figures from the mines for this paper. I must ask you not to lose sight of the fact that in treating the sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie mines we had absolutely no data to start on, and that to-day. we are just beginning to get a fair grip of tbe subject; and though very high extractions were announced when the first plants were started on sulphide ore, it was well known that this was only to maintain the public confidence in the mines to allow time to make necessary adjustments; and, as showing the advance made in the treatment of the ore, I notice several of the mines have published the results of the final or re-treatment of the residues of their first sulphide treatment. I have also had the opportunity afforded me of thoroughly sampling the residues of several of the principal mines, and find the results as now published absolutely correct.
