Several packages for the estimation of porphyry type deposits exist and produce acceptable results. Recently, however, the need for really trying to obtain maximum information from drill holes has prompted the generation of geostatistical solutions to the problem of reserve calculation. It will be shown that an understanding of a few key points is necessary in order for these solutions (variogram analysis and kriging) to he really ptimal. The most important new fact to be ecognized in open pit ore reserve estimation is that block models do not give an accurate rediction of ore tonnage when a cut-off is pplied but often yield an overestimation of p to 25%. When checked against extensive roduction records, geostatistical methods provide a practical solution to this problem. t now seems that the model used here gives he best possible results. Inasmuch as all arge deposits present very similar geostatis- ical characteristics only a few days of work re necessary to produce a complete inventory f these. The techniques used will be demon- trated using examples from five deposits and pecial emphasis will be given to the accurate rediction of tonnages of ore and waste using he new "transfer function" technique of G.

The 1100 Orebody is the main copper production area of Isa Mine with an output of 390 000 tonnes per four week period and a work force of approximately 260 men per shift. Currently a total of 56 nippers work a three shift, five day week roster to-service crews spread over a strike length of 1000 m and a vertical height of 220 in. A variety of rail and diesel equipment provides shaftto cribroom and cribroomto sublevel work place transport of men and materials. Overall eficiency and safety has been improved with a selected group performing supply, storage, clean-up and "bus runs" throughout the orebody - activities which are further co-ordinated by an FM radio system linking units with a control clerk.

The paper outlines the development and objectives of the slim core (50 mm dia.) testing procedures employed at the Company's Central Research Laboratories with particular reference to washability studies required for coalfield evaluation. It shows that when the routine test procedures, that have been developed for cores recovered form the Sydney Coal Basin, were applied to Bowen Basin Coals some of the washing data obtained appeared to be suspect. Though yield indications appeared to be of the right order, product ash, required separating gravity and percentage of near gravity material were found to be at variance with bulk washability data. The results of a correlation study made on an underground seam from the Bowen Basin comparing slim core, hulk sample, and pilot plant washing data are given. The results of a series of studies including washability studies made on slim cores, strip samples, large diameter cores and bulk samples, pilot washing trials and computer simulations of washery circuits treating Lilyvale seam coal from the Bowen Basin are shown.

The general structure of microprocessors and their method of use is described, and de- tails given of their application in two parti- cular examples of instrumentation for mineral concentrators. One is in a pulp density gauge, and using this example, the way in which a microprocessor-based unit can be made to be self-calibrating is described. The other is in an on-stream analysis detector for uranium in solvent, where a microprocessor is used to re- place a mini-computer.

Antimony ore samples (mean assay 18·7 per cent antimony) from Endeavour Inlet, Marlborough Sounds New Zealand, were tested for upgrading by flotation to a saleable product (60 per cent antimony).The effects of activating agents, collectors, frothers, pH, conditioning time, and particle size on the recovery and grade of a stibnite flotation concentrate were determined using HaIlimond tube and laboratory flotationcell test apparatus. Optimum flotation conditions for the ore were thereby established. A stibnite concentrate grading 63 per cent antimony and an overall recovery of 90 per cent is obtainable in a two-stage process.

Current operating practice in a plant commissioned some five years ago to treat ferritic zinc plant residue by the "Jarosite" process is described. Major problems overcome include obtaining reliable pH measurements at 100¦C, prevention of scale build up in spent electrolyte heaters, blinding of jarosite filter cloths and the deposition of gypsum in filter presses.

A Train Performance Calculator (TPC) is an essential tool in railway operations, as a means of acquiring quickly a precise measure of the performance of the system. Traditionally the TPC was used in the form of program for a large computer. By employing an efficient integration algorithm and tailoring the program to suit the computer system it is shown that it is possible to devise a TPC for a mini computer. The resulting low running costs and flexibility of operation makes this a useful design tool. This TPC was developed to study problems associated with a single track railway operation. It was applied specifically to study the railway operated by the Mt. Newman Mining Co. Limited in the Pilbara region of W.A. to transport iron ore from the mine to the port. The TPC was used to calculate the effects of changes to locomotive power, to train size, to the track and to the amount of traffic. Its accuracy was checked by comparing its performance with that of the actual trains.

Due primarily to the publication of the Fitzgerald Report the impact of taxation on the mining industry and the amount of taxes actual- ly paid by the industry have become items of intense debate. However, the discussion has been governed more by impassioned rhetoric than considered logic. It is equally as wasteful to the economy for the mining industry as a low cost efficient export earner to be punitively taxed, as it is for the industry to be given excessive taxation assistance. A comparison of the effect of five tax- ation policies on the cash flow of a capital intensive mining project is presented. The policies considered are Liberal 1969, Liberal 1976 with and without the coal levy, Labor 1975 and Labor 1976. The mining project used in the analysis is modelled on published estimates for the proposed Nebo coal project. The analysis is equally applicable to any large mining or petroleum development.

Due to collapsing copper prices during 1974/75, a rapid changeover was made at the C.S.A. mine from mechanised cut and fill stoping with incline access to the more economic long hole open stoping method. In 1974/75, 20 per cent of total production came from open stopes. For the 1976/77 year-to- date, more than 80 per cent of total production has been won from open stopes. As a result, mining performance has improved considerably. Stops, drilling performance has increased by more than 50 per cent since the changeover from extension rod, 50 mm diameter cut and fill uphole drilling to 115 mm diameter in-the-hole hammer drilling of holes up to 65 m long. Stops blasting performance has improved from 750 tonnes to 950 tonnes blasted per manshift. Open stope primary blasting per- formance is much higher, but reduces to 950 tonnes per manshift when secondary blasting and firing of hung drawpoints are taken into consideration. Ground control, the most expensive and least productive aspect of cut and fill mining, is almost entirely eliminated in long hole open stoping.

Until recently, the Australian mining industry received unquestioning encouragement from both State and Federal Governments. Now governments adopt a more questioning outlook about, for example, the proportion of local mine income accruing abroad, about the contrib- ution of the industry to public revenue, and about the industry's impact on the environment. This paper reports on attitudes at a recent industry-government-academic conference on planning and problems for the minerals sector in the next decade and beyond. It also examines a government policy review in Canada, which has undertaken some change in direction of mineral policies in the last few years.

Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

A study of flocculation of ultra-fine coal particles by ultrasonic waves was investigated on a laboratory scale.The coal suspension was dilute, with low ionic strength, and at pH 6·2.When a stationary sonic wave is set up in a solution containing suspended coal particles, it is believed that high and low pressure regions are alternately established at the half wave-length of the sonic wave and this resultsin the migration of coal particles towards the low pressure regions.As expected the flocculation is more effective as to frequency and the power of the ultrasonic waves is increased.The shape and size of the test equipment are also important variables.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). The producers of mineral sands on the East Coast of Australia might be regarded as having a simple task of selling Rutile and Zircon. Such is not the case. Differing quality and grain size requirements plus the dramatic increase in the percentage of mineral sold in a processed form have meant a large increase in the number of different end products handled. The resulting sales control problems are compounded by the need to be able to deliver against a large number of separate contracts which may relate to spot or long term sales in small quantities or in bulk shipments. Methods of helping management control this situation have been devised and incorporated into a suite of computer programs. Experience with the approach has been very satisfactory. The effect of changes to shipping schedules, commitment to new or changed orders, or proposed changes to production can be evaluated as and when necessary with little bother. This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

The main factors controlling the electro- winning of zinc from impure aqueous sulphate electrolytes are reviewed. Zinc, hydrogen and impurities are deposited at the cathode. The current effic- iency for zinc is increased by increasing zinc/ acid ratio and current density and by decreas- ing temperature; and may be unchanged, increased or decreased by the presence of impurity ions. A qualitative comparison of observed and predicted impurity effects is in reasonable agreement. Quantitative treatment of the effects of impurities and cell additives is not available. A tentative explanation of the time dependence of current efficiency in the presence of some impurities is provided. The forms in which impurities are deposited is substantially unknown. Impurities may be classified according to the extent of cathodic deposition. Procedures for control of cathodic deposition of impurities are outlined. The main anodic reactions are the forma- tion of oxygen, manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid. Minor reactions include the oxidation of lead, silver, cobalt and chloride. The importance which matters of social welfare and environmental quality have assumed recently is the underlying theme of this paper. Demands for infrastructure reflect the change in emphasis from economic and technological development to those issues which affect the total well-being of the community. To put the importance of social change in perspective, examples are cited and a theme is developed which underlines the relevance of changes in public attitude and in government policies on mineral exploitation and related development and on the regimen of associated infrastructure sought. Planning on a long term or strategic basis and on a broad scale is put forward as an effective means of identifying changing social attitudes for the purpose of framing government and corporate policies.
