Dr. Willett. I will start by answering one or two general points which have been posed. The first point is a question of liability of a seam to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are very liable to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are not liable at all except in most abnormal circumstances, and some seams have a liability somewhere between these two extremes. Dr. J. S. Haldane made the comment some 50 years or so ago that if you try hard enough you can make any coal seam in the world fire spontaneously. Many heatings have in fact occurred because the coal has been allowed to be ground up into a fine state and there has been air leakage through it for many years. This has resulted in spontaneous combustion which would not have occurred in some seams unless conditions had been very abnormal indeed. One comment I heard while listening to the discussions of one team was the importance of encouraging morale and the team seemed to go to the extent of suggesting that this was more important than the actual technical action taken. Though I agree that everything possible should be done to encourage morale, it must be in conjunction with the correct technical method of dealing with the Emergency.

Two field studies to monitor fill pres sures and vein-wall deformation were conducted in mines of the Coeur d'Alene mining district in Idaho. Both operations employed cut-and-fill mining techniques in nearly vertical veins aver- aging 10 feet in width, and backfilled with classified mill tailings. Hydraulic pressure cells were used to measure transverse, longitudinal, and vertical pressures within the backfilled stopes. Rock bolts extending into the manways and mechanical closure devices were used to monitor vein-wall convergence. Continuous recorders were used with selected pressure cells to prolong the life of the installation. Transverse pressures in excess of 600 psi and stope wall closure up to 22 inches were re- corded. Closure rates were higher at midheight of the stope than they were near either sill, indicating that the vein walls react similarly to a beam supported on each end.

The intention of this work was to con struct a machine on a pilot scale which could hoist a mixture of ore and water through a height of 300 metres and to operate the mach- ine to determine the parameters which affect the success of upscaling the machine to a pro- duction unit size. The investigation into this form of hoist- ing was stimulated by the interest shown by Roan Selection Trust (RST) into the Mills Pulse vessel system. Agreement was reached between these two parties that RST would in- vestigate the Mills System and determine if this system, shown to be successful on a Lab- oratory scale, would be successful as a pro- duction unit. The investigation has shown, however, that for practical reasons, the Mills System is not satisfactory. As a consequence, the RST system was invented and developed which on a pilot plant scale would be capable of lifting 7,000 tonnes of ore per month. The inventions included amongst other things, a valve to control the flow of the abrasive mixture of ore and water, a new pumping system employing a filter mechanism, and a method of changing the downward direction of flow of the pipe mixture through the plant to an upward flow in the hoisting pipe. Since early 1971 Western Titanium N.L. has been operating an ilmenite upgrading plant on a commercial basis at Capel, Western Australia. In their process ilmenite is pre- oxidized, then reduced in a rotary kiln to a mixture of metallic iron and titanium oxides. The iron is leached out by accelerated rusting in aerated water, leaving a product with titanium content, expressed as Ti02, of about 92%. Samples from different stages of the up- grading process, representing operations over the last two years, have been studied in detail by X-ray diffraction methods, and the sequences of phases and reactions occurring have been determined. Quantitative X-ray studies showed the ilmenite feed materials to consist of a mixture of ilmenite and pseudo- rutile. Pre-oxidation of the ilmenite at =1000¦C leads to the formation of rutile plus a Fe2TiO5-FeTi205-Mn2TiO5 solid solution. The final reduction product consisted of a mixture of metallic iron, reduced rutile and a FeTi05-MnTi205-Ti305 solid solution. The relative amounts of these reduction products were very sensitive to the initial concentra- tions of the minor constituents manganese and magnesium. The effects of variation of ilmenite feed rate, reducing atmosphere,- reduction temperature and controlled addition of magnesium were also studied.

This paper deals with a few aspects of town planning and town management which affect human relationships within that town. Its scope is limited to the consideration of towns forming an adjunct to a mining operation, and particularly considers these aspects at the Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, town of Parabur doo, Western Australia. Planning and standards of a new town and amenities are-discussed and related through living comfort to an effect on human relation- ships. Town administration and the promotion of many forms of social activities are dealt with in detail to illustrate the importance of quickly forming a cohesive community from a large number of newly arriving individuals. The results achieved by the planning and administration at Paraburdoo are highlighted by involving many residents by way of answers to a questionnaire.

In an area north of Mowit Ica chip sampling of limonitic outcrops on a regional scale led to the investigation of a number of areas considered to be geochemically anomalous for copper and zinc. These areas were closely gridded,end where geochemical results were favourable, they were subsequently drilled or ro¦titeaned Che results indicated that for copper Lne anomalies were mainly associated wiL_ ironstone formed in areas of faulting. is suggested that copper is able to move considerable distances by ground water movement and is likely to be fixed under conditions of low pH. The movement of zinc is more difficult to explain but it appears to have an affinity for iron and is only deposited in areas having a high pH (i.e. doioiirific scdimet=Cs).

The .subject of this paper is to briefly outline various methods of stockpiling and reclaiming, and the use of different types of bucketwheel re- claimers and stackers in these operations. The paper examines briefly the different types of bucketwheel equipment, their operations and relates them to different stockpile layouts, giving examples of their application in Australia.

Although the title of this paper permits a very broad scope for discussion, I propose to deal mainly with those aspects of design part- icularly related to rook filling, the'theme of this conference. The unique suitability of belt conveyors for the continuous economical delivery of materials into or out of underground workings, is well established and needs no elaboration. The facility with which conveyor units, comprised of modern modular components, can be adjusted to lengthen or shorten, their ability to be readily repositioned to suit the develop- ment of a work pattern and their virtues as low noise, reliable transport media, are already accepted by all who are involved with the mining industry.

The nature of exploration in Australia is reviewed from its inception to the present time. It is seen as consisting of three phases: the first, prospecting; the second and third, mainly company-based activity. The first yielded the discoveries on which the mining industry was originally built. The great recent growth of the industry has been due mainly to the discoveries of the third. The technical, organisational, legis- lative and other aspects are reviewed. The overall result has been a very great increase in the known mineral resources and, viewed collectively, exploration is seen as providing the principal means of assessing, evaluating and building up the nation's mineral resources.

Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

During the past 18 months several import- ant hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the Dampier Sub-basin, which is a sedimentary area lying entirely offshore from the Precambrian Pilbara Block in the southern part of 'he Northwest Shelf of Western Australia. This sub-basin is a major sedimentary downwarp forming a northern extension to the Carnarvon Basin. This extension is bounded to the north by the De Grey Nose, separating it from the Beagle Sub-basin. To the south the Dampier Sub-basin merges with the Barrow Sub- basin. Extensive seismic data combined with results from exploration drilling show that the Dampier Sub-basin is a complex depositional basin containing over 20,000 feet of sediments which are mainly Triassic to Recent in age. Tectonically the sub-basin can be divided into seven main structural elements. In a northwest to southeast direction these are the Rankin Platform, the Kendrew Trough, the Madeleine- Dampier Trend, the Lewis Trough, the Legendre- Rosemary Trend, the Enderby Fault Zone and the broad Pilbara Shelf. Permian sediments were encountered in only one well drilled to date in the sub-basin, but Triassic and younger sediments are extensive. With the introduction of diesel powered loading and hauling equipment, a number of Australian mines producing less than one million tonnes per year from shallow orebodies have been dev- eloped by decline. This method of entry has the advantage of providing both flexible access and early prod uction. However, as the depth of mining increases so does the operating cost of haulage, due to the need for more trucks. This cost, together with increased capital requirements for both equipment and infrastructure, leads to the point where the alternat- ive of shaft hoisting must be con- sidered. With an established decline it is possible to provide an ore hoisting shaft using a drilled raise with subsequent stripping to a suitable size. Using DCF techniques and known equipment operating and capital costs, an economic comparison of the two systems is made to determine the limit- ing depth to which truck haulage can be used.

A system of decline mine entries and ore haulages has been designed for the Mt. Windarra mine. This choice was controlled by the nature of the ore- bodies, the mining method chosen and the capital cost of development re- quired for production. Mine entries are being driven 4 metres high and 5.5 metres wide and decline at 11%, to accommodate diesel haulage vehicles of 35 tonnes capacity. The.Mount Windarra haulage system and the design parameters used in its selection and design are discussed, and general design and selection parameters are proposed.

Design of cemented fill in mining is often carried out without any consideration of the structure of the fill. The composition of cemented fills varies in the stopes due to the placement method, and the strength of the fill in the laboratory depends on the density, orient- ation, moisture content and drainage conditions. Within each stope there are definite zones and the structure of both cemented rockfill and cemented hydraulic fill has to be defined for each zone and the field conditions simulated in the laboratory. Structure also affects fill permeability and compressibility. From a study of the cemented fill in place, the effect of changes in the placement methods can be seen and then controlled to improve fill performance and economy. These features of cemented hydraulic fill and cemented rockfill behaviour are discus- sed and illustrated through reference to field and laboratory work undertaken at Mount Isa.

Recent exploration has established depos its of nickel sulphide in several areas of Western Australia. To assist in their develop- ment Amdel has investigated the beneficiation of many samples from these deposits and has estab- lished flowsheets for the recovery of nickel values by flotation. Metallurgical data are presented for the samples according to four factors which were encountered in their respective treatments.

Alcoa of Australia's Del Park mining op eration is centred 9 km. east of the Pinjarra alumina refinery, and is centrally locatedwith- in the 10, 000 sq. km. lease which the Company holds for bauxite in the Darling Ranges. An- other mining operation is situated near the township of Jarrahdale, and supplies bauxite to the Kwinana refinery. Definition of the bauxite ore, development works and mining to the ore haulage stage, are identical for both mining operations. Exper- ience, and production cost figures, obtained from the Jarrahdale mine, where 100 tonne trucks are used to haul ore to a fixed crushing plant, led to the development of the Del Park mining concept with increased mobility of op- erations. The crushing-conveying-stockpiling arrangement at Del Park consists of a 1200 t. p. h. mobile crusher feeding bauxite to an overland conveyor system which transports the ore approximately 6. 66 km. to the stockpile area in the refinery. In the refinery raw mat- erials area the bauxite is distributed into 200, 000 tonne stockpiles by means of a travel- ling boom stacker.

Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. Well organized community transport would serve the same purpose, conserve a scarce commodity, take some of the stress out of livingdriving in a major city can hardly be considered a relaxing experience-and minimize the problem of atmospheric pollution.Whilst man has demonstrated his great versatility...

Naturally occurring rutile contains approximately 96 per cent titanium dioxide (Ti02), whereas the product from the ilmenite reduction - aeration upgrading process, "sub- rutile", contains only about 92 per cent Ti02. Therefore, there is an-incentive to lift the quality of sub-rutile by removing transition metal impurities, in order to supply a more valuable and marketable product, particularly for the chloride-route pigment producers. Previous studies have shown that the sub- rutile residual iron content (of approximately 4 per cent) and residual manganese content (of approximately 1.5 per cent) are chemically bound within the titanium-oxygen mineral lattice, and are most difficult to remove by simple leaching methods. In attempts to improve their eventual removal, a simple process modification has been successfully investigated in laboratory scale trials. Transition metal sulphides have been formed in the reduced ilmenite by using a "sulphur-doping" technique during reduction (metallization) conducted at controlled temperatures. These compounds give rise to greatly enhanced dissolution of the unwanted transition metal constituents during the sub- sequent aeration and acid washing steps. Thus, the manganese content of the final sulphur- doped, reduced-aerated, acid washed product can be reduced by about 90 per cent to 0.2 per cent, and the iron content by about 70 per cent to less than 1.5 per cent, in comparison with those levels remaining after unmodified pro- cessing. Additions of sulphur as low as 2 per cent of the weight of the ilmenite have proven satisfactory. Preliminary studies reveal that the modified process is economically feasible. These results suggest that the sulphur content of the Collie coal char used in an unmodified reduction step must exert some influence on the eventual removal of iron and manganese during aeration and acid washing.

This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes.
