This paper describes recent developments at West Cliff Colliery in environmental monitoring, using a sophisticated computer controlled system. The operations involved in environmental monitoring are described and the equipment employed is detailed. It is anticipated that the monitoring system employed at West Cliff Colliery will be expanded to allow total and instantaneous monitoring of roadway environmental Conditions.

When a fire or explosion occurs underground the ventilation maybe disrupted and the atmos- phere may become oxygen deficient and filled with noxious and flammable gases. The basic survival technique for:any man alive underground is to escape and this may be achieved and rescue workers may enter such atmospheres to carry out rescue work underground by using appropriate breathing apparatus.

Thirty mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil, water and mineral samples from the Groote Eylandt Mining Company mine site were approximately three times more effective in biodegrading manganese dioxide (34± 18 mg Mn++/1/day) than sixteen purified strains (11 ± 10 mg Mn++/1/day) isolated from the primary enrichment cultures. Two pure bacterial genera identified as a Pseudomonad and a Bacillus, with an excess MnOz and nutrient, were able to dissolve 106 mg Mn++/litre/day in mixed culture compared with 29 mg Mn++/litre/day when grown separately.

A number of gold processing plants in Western Australia have nickel in their ores, leading to significant levels of nickel on their loaded carbon. The presence of nickel during leaching, adsorption and elution'may have detrimental effects on cyanide consumption, carbon inventory requirements, stripping costs, electrowinning efficiencies and may contaminate the gold bullion.This paper discusses the competitive adsorption of gold and nickel cyanides onto activated carbon and investigates changes in solution parameters that may improve gold adsorption and/or inhibit nickel adsorotion.

One of the greatest practical difficulties of measuring airblast occurs when a significant wind is blowing onto the microphone. Small windscreens are usually used to mitigate the wind noise on the microphone, but in some wind conditions, sound pressure levels (SPL) of over 120 decibel (linear) are frequently recorded. There are no specific procedures to mitigate the effect of wind noise when measuring airblast in any of the standards or guidelines pertaining to the measurement of airblast from blasting operations, other than the requirement to use an effective windscreen. A search for relevant literature was undertaken and measurements were taken over a period of six months at a test site using alternative microphone measurement methods. Previous researchers’ experiments with windscreens in silenced wind tunnels showed that wind noise can be reduced through the use of large diameter windscreens, and that at low frequencies, the windscreen size and the material type makes no difference to measured SPL values. Other researchers found that wind turbulence caused significant SPL measurement problems. A comparison with field data failed to explain the extremely high SPL recorded by the field microphones at wind velocities much lower than those used in wind tunnel testing. It has been concluded that turbulent airflow over and behind the microphone is a significant contributor to extraneous noise in airblast measurements in windy conditions. This turbulence can be generated by objects upwind of the microphone or by the microphone itself if the windscreen is ineffective. Reducing the wind speed over the microphone by placing it on the ground is the approach required by the international standard for the measurement of noise from wind turbine generators (IEC 61400–11). This paper presents data that illustrates the extent of the problem, reports on the trial of three different microphone mounting locations for measuring airblast from blasting and concludes that in windy conditions, microphones placed on the ground substantially avoid wind problems and do not reduce the measured SPL of the airblast.CITATION:Henley, K, 2015. The copper and zinc contents of herbarium specimens of 11 of the 12 Australian species of Polycarpaea were determined in order to establish background and anomalous values of potential use in biogeochemical prospecting.Cumulative frequency curves were used to establish appropriate threshold concentrations for six species including the "copper plant"' P spirostylis. Collection localities of Polycarpaea specimens with anomalous copper or copper-and-zinc values are under investigation.

Design and selection of support systems for longwall faces call for in-depth know- ledge of strata mechanics and in particular of strata-support interactions. The paper presents the results of field investigations and analysis of a difficult-to-cave roof using powered supports under a massive dolerite sill in Central India using a state- of-the-art datalogger system. The mechanised long wall face was equipped with 4/680 tons chockshields operated on the IFS mode using a 300 KW DERD shearer. The datalogger system was capable of storing data simulta- neously in 32 channels. The paper describes the monitoring system and the monitoring programme. The system provided useful information on support behaviour, build- up of leg pressures and face convergence during an intense dynamic periodic weighting phenomenon which destroyed the integrity of almost half of the face supports. At this point, the face had advanced by about 197 metres from the barrier. The paper outlines a post-mortem analysis of this dynamic event and provides a critical evaluation of the data collected for understanding strata support interaction and the behaviour of the massive sill in the overburden.

Exploration for economic nickel sulphide mineralisation has often been directed by rationalisations based on poorly understood genetic models. Among those that have enjoyed popularity over the past decade are the "layered gabbro" model and the "basal ultramafic" or Kambalda model. The new discoveries in the Mt Keith-Agnew area could well become a model for future nickel search. Exploration based on even the crudest state- ment of the Kambalda model - prospect the basal contact of Archaean ultramafic complexes for gossanous expressions of sulphide mineralisa- tion - has met with remarkable success. Refine- ments to this model, besides satisfying the geology of any particular deposit, have the major virtue that many of the genetic options - magmatic segregation, hydrothermal transport, sulphurisation, replacement sedimentary, structural control, etc. - are still open. Recent descriptions of highly magnesian silicate melts associated with the ultramafic rocks, do however, place some constraints on the formation of these deposits. Further evidence, from experimental studies on sulphide-silicate and sulphide-oxide phase relationships, and nickel-iron exchange in pyrrhotite, is taken with descriptions of sulphide nickel occurrences in Western Australia to examine genetic models for existing ore bodies.

In the last decade, great strides have been made in the raise boring technique in China. Extensively, the drilling and blasting method has been replaced by the mechanized raising method since 1980. There are now over 3C raise drills operating in more than 20 mines. The diameters for shaft boring varies from 500mm to 2000mm, and to depths up to 90m. Tlis paper mainly describes the performance, mtLin technical achievments and applications of all four kinds of raise drills, and auxiliary equipment. Finally, some recommend- ations for future improvement in the raise boring technique are presented also.

Underground space can be defined as space below natural ground level which can be used as an alternative to an above ground location. While many of our above ground structures inherently involve underground excavation for foundations and services, the term underground space specifically refers to organised development of underground openings and of the underground domain. For example, the services to a city such as power, gas, sewerage, water and communications are installed in a congested array which usually requires roads to be dug up when the services need to be accessed. An underground space installation of services would involve a well planned conduit which is easily accessed without any excavation. The concept of using this virtually untapped land resource to the advantage of our expanding cities is gaining considerable interest in Australia. Overseas, in the Scandinavian countries and some Asian countries, underground space has been used for centuries; in Great Britain, France and the United States of America over the last century and in Japan for over a decade. This paper focusses on the types of underground space usage which should be competitive with above ground use and suggests areas in which the competitive edge may be improved in favour of underground space. In particular, considerable advantage is seen by using well-planned underground space developments in major cities, where the strategic central location of the development takes advantage of proximity to potential users. However, the largest single factor affecting the acceptance of underground space is the high capital cost of construction, even though an underground space development may result in lower operating costs and reduced long-term maintenance costs. While excavation methods and associated costs are very much site-specific, the importance of applying the latest technology in rock breakage, with consideration of ground vibration, excavation rates and ground support, remains a major challenge to the development of underground space.

Mineral valuation may appear to be a special field of financial valuation when in fact it is a subset of general investment decision theory. The only significant difference in mineral valuation is that in the case of valuing an on-going mineral asset, ie a mine, often there is no initial capital outlay involved. One is required to determine what the mineral asset as it stands is worth. But this is the same problem as determining the maximum one could pay today and not incur a loss over the life of the asset. In other words one needs to determine the Net Present Value (NPV) of the asset. The two most widely used discounted cash flow methods, NPV and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) came of age with the rapid adoption of the personal computer and spreadsheet programs. The two methods are directly related as the IRR is a special case of NPV. NPV measures the absolute increase in real wealth that can be expected from a certain investment, which makes it particularly suitable for mineral asset valuation, but ignores the efficiency of the investment. In contrast, IRR gives the expected efficiency of the investment but ignores the increase in wealth aspect. IRR has two serious theoretical weaknesses; multiple IRR's and a very rigid assumption about the rate of return of reinvested proceeds, plus if no initial equity expenditure is involved there is no IRR. The choice of the ""hurdle"" rate can also be a problem and in certain circumstances one can obtain different rankings of mutually exclusive projects using IRR and NPV. Although NPV and IRR supposedly measure financial risk, in fact they only address a very narrow area of risk, namely the time value of money given the real discount rate. They side step the issue of what the real discount rate should be and varying degrees of risk. The classical way to establish the real discount rate is to use the weighted average cost of capital.

The collapse of the I.T.C., the subsequent fall in the price of Tin, and the lifting of quotas saw the Renison concentrator resuming full seven- day operations at maximum capacity in 1985/86. Performance was sus- tained in terms of grade and recovery, and in some areas improved, over this period. A further challenge was declining head grades, and the need to treat higher proportions of less amenable ore types. The complexity of the flowsheet and the method of mining and ore handling predisposes the process to unstable operation, and solving this problem comprises a major component of the current development effort. The concentrator has an imbalance of capacity between processes, and excess in some areas is being adapted to enhance the capacity of others. Magnetic susceptibility of various minerals is being exploited to greater effect. Significant performance gains are achievable by improving exist- ing unit process efficiency, particularly in grinding, gravity processes and Cassiterite Flotation. This paper reviews the metallurgical developments, both recently implemented and planned for this year, which have contributed to main- taining Renison Limited in a competitive position in the post I.T.C. Tin industry.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

There are two discrete aspects to collecting portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) data to obtain reliable results and to comply with reporting requirements under the 2012 edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012) – sampling method and quality assurance. A robust sampling program is required to obtain representative material for analysis. The appropriate method should be established for a particular project using a small orientation study. A variety of approaches to sampling soils, drill cuttings, rock faces and diamond drill core are discussed. These include using multiple spot analyses, scanning using a single operating beam and the collection of cutting saw pulps. The operator must also be aware of the attenuating effects of analysing through sample bags of different material types for various elements as well as the limitations of current pXRF instruments in reporting reliable data for certain elements. The analysis of the samples must also be accompanied by a quality assurance program in order to generate data that are ‘fit for purpose’. This includes recording X-ray tube resolution on a routine basis, using matrix-appropriate standards for which total elemental concentrations are available, using silica blanks, capturing sufficient duplicate analyses to constrain data precision and obtaining check assays to calibrate pXRF data against laboratory data. Examples of quality control approaches and data are presented. Table 1 of the 2012 JORC Code also recommends that information on instrument make and model, reading times and calibration be provided in any reporting of pXRF data. To this should be added information on operating mode and temperature, software version and moisture content of the samples. A robust sampling methodology with a suitable quality assurance/quality control program should produce pXRF data of sufficient quality for public reporting purposes, provided that the data are presented using appropriate cautionary language and adequate supporting information.CITATION:Arne, D C and Jeffress, G M, 2014. Reverse circulation (R.C.) drilling or the dual tube method as it is quite commonly known, has a unique place in conventional mineral drilling. It can be classified half-way between open hole drilling at the lower end of the scale and diamond drilling at the upper end. The system basically consists of two tubes, one inside the other, with compressed air flowing between the inner and outer tubes. Sample cuttings return up the inner tube through the head of the rig and via a hose to a cyclone where the sample is collected. This system means that the cuttings are free of contamination as they are at no time in contact with the outside formation of the hole.Reverse circulation drilling is divided into two areas: R.C. Roller and Blade for softer formations; and R.C. Percussion for harder formations.

The mineral processing industry is in boom times. The focus on mill availability and therefore profitability has never been greater, as grinding mill maintenance often dictates the entire plant shut down duration. Advances in mill systemsÆ quality and reliability and the faster, safer relining afforded by RMEÆs Mill Relining Systems have significantly enhanced grinding plant availability and utilisation. Yet relining performance is still affected by the design and planning by a team of stakeholders long before the maintenance team set foot in the mill. For a greenfield grinding plant project, these team players include: 1. project owner, 2. project manager, 3. mill supplier, 4. liner supplier, 5. plant operating personnel, 6. plant maintenance personnel, 7. mill relining crew, and  8. mill reline system supplier (RME). The complex and sometimes competing design demands of mill construction and operation together with the pressure of tight timelines can result in even simple maintenance requirements being overlooked let alone optimising plant design and planning for maintenance. This paper identifies all the involved stakeholders in an effective mill relining 'team' and gives principles and considerations for each to more effectively achieve the goals within their vital roles. This paper is aimed to be a practical guide for grinding mill designers and planners to more fully exploit the advances in Mill Relining Systems and improve their mill profitability.

In surface mining, studies of the kinematics of blasted rocks using high speed film/video image analysis have allowed the estimation of the starting time, direction and magnitude of visible movement of fixed sections of the free face. Horizontal displacement versus time plots from discrete targets at the face generally report changes in slope over very small time intervals. These changes indicate step increases in velocity due to the action of explosive gases. In practice, the onset of rock mass movement, different to localised spalling, has been associated with a response time which exceeds the combined times of detonation, propagation and reflection of stress waves. This time is referred to as minimum response or burden movement time. As an engineering index, burden movement time has been used to provide guidelines for the selection of inter-hole and inter-row delay sequences in production blasting. With respect to improving breakage and fragmentation, it has been demonstrated that the delay interval between adjacent explosive charges should be less than the expected burden movement time. Similarly to reduce confinement between rows, delay intervals should exceed the expected burden movement time. The Hybrid Stress Blasting Model (HSBM) is a modelling framework that dynamically links an ideal and non-ideal explosives detonation code to a geomechanical rock model. This blast simulation tool is aimed at analysing the role played by different explosive formulations in fragmenting and/or damaging various rock types under different degrees of confinement. In the current framework, the rock behaviour under extremely high pressures and loading rates is calibrated from shock tests and the role of the explosive in fracture growth is accounted for and assumes a compressible fluid flowing through the explicit fracture network. The model is being developed as part of an international collaborative research project funded by a consortium of companies comprised of explosive and equipment suppliers and major mining houses. As part of the development and validation of the HSBM project, data from literature addressing the kinematics of the rock mass (ie burden displacement, face velocities and response times) has been collated and used to evaluate the current version of the code. A series of numerical experiments have been conducted with the view to: evaluate the response of the rock mass to changes in burden distance given by the impact of both stress waves and radial gas flow pressure;compare the modelling outcomes in terms of displacement, response time and face velocities to documented field observations; andcompare stress induced and stress/gas induced modes in terms of burden displacement outcomes. Results from these experiments have shown that in its current form the model is able to capture the trends observed and measured in practice. This is with respect to the simulation of burden displacement, response time and average face velocities for different geometries and charging conditions. The experiments have served as consistency checks which form part of an ongoing and comprehensive evaluation and validation of the HSBM code also aimed at addressing some of its current limitations.
