The current insurance market has been brought about by a number of pressures, including: collapsing investment returns; growing losses, both normal and catastrophic; and reserve strengthening. This is impacting most classes of insurance coverage, with the traditional characteristics of higher pricing and greater levels of retention, however it is now translating into a lack of capacity and reduced coverage. This presentation will explain how the market has arrived at this situation and will challenge whether this is the traditional insurance cycle or a structural correction. It will also address the anticipated time of correction.

Dissolution of S02 into water-acetone mixtures results in the formation of 2-hydroxy-2-propane sulphonic acid. The pH, or acid strength, of water-carbonyl-S02 mix- tures can be controlled by varying the concen- tration of the carbonyl compound or the rate at which S02 is added to the water-carbonyl mixture during a reaction. The ease with which the acid strength of these mixtures can be controlled means that they have significant potential for use as a selective lixiviant. We have used water-acetone-S02 mixtures to selectively dissolve phosphate minerals in Christmas Island and Duchess phosphate ores and also uranium minerals in Yeelirrie uranium ore and Olympic Dam copper concentrate.

Chile, which hosts around 30 per cent of the worldÆs copper resources, is now the largest producer and exporter of copper. Chilean copper output accounts for more than one-quarter of total worldwide production. An increase to around 40 per cent is forecast by the end of the century. In addition, Chile ranks eighth in silver production and 11th in gold output. In Chile, mining generates more than eight per cent of the countryÆs GDP and the total value of mineral exports is more than US $7.85 billion corresponding to more than 25 per cent of South AmericaÆs mineral production. The rate of growth of Chilean mineral production is indeed impressive. Table 1 shows that in the period 1969 - 1998, copper annual production increased 564 per cent from 667 000 t to 3 764 000 t. Gold production went up 27 times from 1827 to 49 770 kg. Silver output grew 1219 per cent from 95 650 kg produced in 1969 to 1 166 380 kg in 1998. Several facts explain this dramatic increase of production, but the most important was the success of exploration sustained over the same period. This resulted in the discovery of several world-class deposits which when developed into mines, account for much of the production increases. Therefore, this summary review shows the success of basic exploration carried out during the last 30 years in the Chilean territory. The review is based on data already published in different specialised mining books or magazines. It only includes those world-class discoveries not the lesser discoveries important at local scale. All figures were calculated using 1998 $US dollar and average estimated metal prices valid for 1999: copper $US 1653 per t ($US 0.75 per pound), gold $US 9452 per kg ($US 294 per ounce) and silver $US 177 per kg ($US 5.5 per ounce).

The majority of surface tailings storage facilities continue to employ sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition. Surface TSFs are typically sized and operated in a way to minimise the initial capital cost of the facility, driven largely by the net present value approach to accounting. This generally leads to too small a storage, too fast a rate of rise of the tailings, and difficulties in managing supernatant water. In turn, this results in wet and soft tailings deposits of high moisture content and low density, and the need for frequent and costly tailings dam raises. Further, such tailings deposits often do not facilitate closure and rehabilitation of the facility. Globally, there are on average over two failures annually of such tailings dams, resulting in loss of life, damage to infrastructure and environmental impact downstream, and the loss of company shareholder value and reputation. Recent high profile tailings dam failures are threatening the mining industry’s financial and social licence to operate.Among the physical processes that tailings undergo on sub-aerial deposition are beaching, hydraulic sorting down the beach according to particle size and specific gravity, settling, consolidation, and desiccation on exposure to the sun and wind. Beaching and hydraulic sorting have proved difficult to test at laboratory scale and difficult to model, and are best assessed in the field. Settling, consolidation and desiccation may be assessed at laboratory scale, but to date there has been an absence of tests to form the basis for the design and management of tailings deposition, and ultimate closure and rehabilitation. The paper describes recent advances in tailings testing methods, including a purpose-built slurry consolidometer that tests the settling and consolidation of tailings from a slurry consistency, simulating increasing tailings depth to about 50 m; and a purpose-built instrumented column that tests the settling, self-weight consolidation and desiccation of a surface layer of tailings, also from a slurry consistency. Selected test results from these two apparatus are presented in the paper, together with brief descriptions of how they may be used to better design tailings slurry deposition. Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas. In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investments in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-substitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.   The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. IT, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East.   The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

The equilibrium phase relations in the Fe- Mn-Ti-0-S system were established at 1380 and 1485 K. The elemental distributions between the equilibrium phases were obtained by chemical- ly analysing selected samples from the phase study. The results are considered in relation to the coal reduction process for upgrading ilmenite. The beneficial effect of adding sulfur to a kiln that uses a manganese-rich feed is ex- plained by the formation of a metal-sulfide solid-solution phase that removes part of the manganese from the oxide system. The optimum conditions for operating the reduction kiln are determined, and the practical need to operate the kiln at other than optimum conditions is explained. It is shown how the experimental data can be used to predict the best compromise conditions for reduction and the resultant purity of the product.

The Loy Yang Optr, Cut is a brown coal mine bring developed in the Latrobe Valley region located some 160 kin south-east of Melbourne, Victoria. The mine has been designed to supply a mine mouth power station at a rate that will rise to 32 million tonnes per year by the mid 1990's. Continuous mining metnuds are employed using bucket Whtel excav- ators and conveyors. This paper describes the basis of the design of the Loy Yang continuous mining system ano cne experience of four years of initial operation.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

Double-stack trains in the United States date back to the early 1980s, starting about the time deregulation of the rail industry occurred. Freight rail became increasingly more competitive to trucking and barge or ship, and led to major investments in railroad infrastructure. Since most railroad tunnels in the United States were constructed between 1880 and 1930, they were not built tall enough to accommodate modern double-stack intermodal railcars. Therefore, as double-stack trains became the norm, existing tunnels became bottlenecks, and railroads wanted the tunnels made larger without impacting traffic. This need to increase the clearance while not impacting rail traffic launched a very specialised industry: the design and construction of replacement lining systems in existing tunnels.Several large multitunnel railroad clearance improvement projects have been completed in the country in the last decade, and they have all been done under ‘live track’ conditions. Live track conditions consist of work windows, often anywhere from four to 12 hours, that are provided to the contractor to complete the construction work. By the end of each work window, the tunnel must be secured so that the railroad can run trains.In addition to improving the clearance, these projects provided the railroads with an opportunity to improve the general condition of the tunnels, including structural, seepage, drainage and icing conditions. This paper discusses the design considerations, tunnel assessments and construction methods used for these live track railroad tunnel projects. Seepage and drainage improvements that were incorporated into the clearance improvement projects are also discussed.CITATION:Schrank, J, 2014. Uplift of the antiformal ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand , has resulted in the progressive evolution of eluvial placer deposits in tectonic sediments on the range flanks and along their margins. The placers are derived from the reworking of fine-grained gold from the auriferous Manuherikia Group fluvial sediments which covered the basement prior to uplift of the ranges. Gold in the tectonic sediments at Matakanui shows a progressive increase in grainsize in successively younger sediments and nuggets in the youngest gravel sequence are up to two orders of magnitude larger than gold grains in the parent alluvial source. Most of the gold in the tectonic sediments is highly irregular in shape, commonly with delicate surface textures which could not have survived fluvial transport and are indicative of authigenic precipitation. Some coarse grains have been rounded by recycling, and further addition of authigenic gold has occurred. Placer gold values result from both physical and chemical enrichment during sedimentary recycling. Continued range uplift and back-thrusting of sediments on to the ranges results in recycling of earlier formed placer sediments. They also result in further enrichment of gold values through the incorporation of additional supplies of the parent alluvial source sediment The host sediments are widespread along the ranges and are not confined to sites of historic mining activity.

To the industrial geologist, as wen as to the general or historic geologist, the possession of a reliable key to the true order or sequence of the stratigraphy or position of the various upper rocky envelopes of the earth's crust, is, equally, a desideratum of the utmost importance. Of similar value to the two groups of students is the possession of facts which throw light upon the relationships which subsist between the puccessive rock formation of different countries, especially between countries lying close to each other, or within the same great geographical division.But there is necessarily a fundamental distinction which marks the respective limits of the field of observations of the industrial geologist, and the purely historic interest of the general geologist. The former has a more definite though less extensive scope. The scope of the latter is wide and indeterminate. In short, the observations of the industrial geologist are, 'from a commercial or economic point of view, of a more practical character, and are, therefore, intentionally restricted to the study of all geological questions which throw light upon the rocks which yield products of economic value and only include the study of the character and history of other rocks, in so far, as they afford aid to the more perfect comprehension of the best manner in which materials of economic value are likely to be sought, and the best means whereby these products may be secured for the material advantage of the community. The motive of the general geologist-in most cases-is a love of the study of some particular branch or province of the geological field, and the fascination of opening a new volume in nature's library, and the hope of extending the realm of knowledge, however slight, are often sufficient, as a motive, to enlist the energy and life's devotion of the true brethren of the hammer, irrespective of considerations regarding the commercial utility of the pursuit.

A part of the results of dissection survey of Chiba No.1 blast furnace, Kawasaki Steel Corporat- ion, is presented. Distributions of coke size and of slag and metal holdup are shown in the region of the dropping zone. A similar relation to the irri- gated packed bed is obtained. The distribution of coke size, coke temperature and liquid holdup are measured in and around the raceway. The shape of raceway in the horizontal and vertical sections indicates that each raceway worked individually. Liquid flow in the dropping zone and around the raceway on the basis of holdup measurements is Discussed.

The Jameson flotation cell was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited and Professor GJ Jameson of the University of Newcastle. The cell has been used in a number of cleaning applications within Mount Isa Mines Limited. In 1989 Peko Mines tested the Jameson flotation cell at the Warrego concentrator to upgrade recleaner concentrate. 2 x 1.4 m diameter Jameson flotation cells were installed in 1990. This paper describes the testing, commissioning and operation of these Cells.

"Based on solid simulation material research, the simulation conditions for methane and coal solid-gas coupling were obtained using solid-fluid coupling theory. Using sand as the aggregate and paraffin and oil as the cementing agents, a material suitable for solid-gas coupling simulation was developed. A permeability testing instrument was also developed, and the compressive strength, brittleness parameters and seepage velocity of material were tested with different aggregates. The results showed that as the paraffin content increased, the compressive strength of the material increased but the permeability decreased. The oil removed the drawback of intensely changing material compressive strength. By setting a different ratio of aggregate to cementing agent, it can simulate rocks with different strengths and permeability. Applying the material to a mining simulation experiment revealed a relationship between methane seepage velocity and overlying strata movement. By extracting pressure relief gas from Shanxi Tianchi coalmine drainage, the authors found that the mining fissure zone was a storage area of pressure relief gas, and a gas drainage system can be placed to achieve good results. The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources is reviewed. In heavlly-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations. By contrast in arid areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Hong Kong is one of the most rapidly developing cities in the world. With constant population growth and limited opportunities for space, the development of a fast and effective underground public transportation network is essential. Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation is currently undertaking several large underground expansions to its existing network. Much of the excavation will be carried out using the drill and blast excavation method.Drill and blast excavation is common in Hong Kong and with the continued development of underground infrastructure the use of the drill and blast excavation method will increase. Although an effective method of excavation, the blasting vibrations caused during construction can have an adverse impact on surrounding structures and impose disruption on the local community.In order to minimise the risks associated with blasting vibrations, and to demonstrate that the impact on local stakeholders will remain within acceptable limits, it is generally necessary for a contractor to submit a blasting assessment report for approval by government authorities before blasting may commence.Continued increases in population density will force more infrastructure to be constructed underground. Tunnels and caverns are increasingly excavated in closer proximity to critical sensitive receivers. This leads to greater potential impacts on the community, tightening constraints on contractors and a higher level of confidence required for approval authorities. Finding a balance between the needs of the community and rising construction costs becomes more challenging.This paper presents a case study on how the blasting assessment report process has been successfully implemented for a major MTR project situated in a densely developed area of Hong Kong. The future of the Tasmanian mineral industry can only be estimated from a knowledge of the past, and armed with this knowledge an orderly plan for the future can be developed. Brief mention is made of the major historical developments through to the present day, with past and future development areas clearly mapped. Areas of importance which have been discussed are divided into the mining of metals, fossil fuels and non-metals; and the process- ing and extractive industries. Discussion then follows on the current general non-insular pressures on the mining industry, the energy crisis, scrap, world shortages, new techniques, inflation, and the effects of exploration on the environment. This is then followed by a discussion of the advantages of Tasmania as a mining state and a cataloguing of the present exploration and some possible areas of future development. From this a suggested plan emerges for the future development of the Tasmanian mineral industry, to incorporate the latest technological advances and by planning to meet the challenge of survival and growth in a turbulent environment.

"In today’s mining industry, the pressure of reducing costs and increasing production while maintaining high safety standards is at the forefront of operational endeavours. A combination of specific mining knowledge and technological advances has helped enable this notion. Fleet management systems have been developed to enable sites to better measure and manage production to improve operational efficiency.The integral part to managing production is having accurate, readily accessible data. This empowers key stakeholders in the management team to drive production reporting, materials tracking and budget forecasting.If a site does not run a fleet management system, manual input is heavily relied upon for production data, which introduces increased risk of human input error. Errors can drive outcomes that don’t achieve increased production at a reduced cost. Alternatively, a fleet management system can have improved accuracy but involves a high monetary investment. Such an investment is not always feasible for smaller mining operations subject to current industry cost pressures.The Emeco Operating System has been developed in alliance with sites such as the Mungari White Foil Operations by satisfying the criteria of a low intensity hardware installation, material tracking data validation processes, remote monitoring, identification of metrics to improve overall operating efficiency and providing the right information to key stakeholders.Citation:Beckman, R, Elms, T and Sampson, M, 2016.
