Back Creek is a tributary of the Condamine River. It flows in a northerly direction across the existing Commodore coal reserves. The diversion of Back Creek was proposed to minimise sterilisation of the reserves. The approval process required a Waterworks Licence application, under the Water Resources Act 1989 (Qld), for the construction of a stream diversion channel and floodway. The diversion was designed using the æreference reachÆ approach, which mimicked existing properties of Back Creek. The following design standards were developed for the diversion: the diversion corridor width was 500 m; the diversion geometry was specified for both the low-flow channel, and the floodplain; material properties were specified for both the low-flow channel lining and the diversion bund; compaction standards for both the low-flow channel and floodplain were set; and the diversion rehabilitation included a riparian corridor and pasture land with clumps of native trees and shrubs. The following performance criteria were developed for the diversion: velocity regimes were replicated for the design events considered, in an attempt to avoid increasing the diversion flow velocities in comparison with the existing creek flow velocities; sediment transport calculations indicated that no significant change in sediment transport was expected within the diversion; overburden settlement estimates for the spoil placed in the corridor were summarised, and will be monitored throughout the construction process; geotechnical stability of the proposed Eastern Pit Buttress and the diversion bund configurations was confirmed; and groundwater impacts were assessed. Construction techniques, monitoring and further investigations are also discussed in this paper.

The results of a geostatistical analysis of geochemical data obtained from field measurements are described in the paper. Q values derived from seismic signal rise times for different travel paths in the rock masses were used in the study. Cross-hole seismic measurements made at surface and underground sites formed the basis for the work. Geostatistical estimation of average l/Q values for area of the rock were compared with geological interpretions of rock type distributions. Reasonable correlations were obtained between the two methods of rock quality estimation.

Traditionally, the gravity cleaning of coal has been evaluated in pilot plant tests. Attention is now turning to the development of empirical models of gravity cleaning equipment that can be used for the design and evaluation of circuits. This paper presents some preliminary information for spirals and water-only cyclones treating fine coals. Also discussed is how such information gives a better understanding of the operating and performance characteristics of this equipment, how realistic comparisons can be made between different types of equipment, and how small mobile plants could be designed for treating the fine coals 'stockpiled' at many NZ mines.

FOR many years past it has been the practice at the Bairnsdale School of Mines to treat any parcels of auriferous concentrates sent in from the surrounding district by roasting them in a handworked reverberatory, and then chlorinating or cyaniding the product. According to Donald CIark, who has done a large amount of work on these ores, the results obtained were fairly satisfactory extractions of over 90 per cent being claimed. With some modifications, the method has been very generally adopted, not only in Gippsland but throughout Victoria. It is, however, difficult to get exact information as to the extractions actually obtained, and unfortunately no records of working results have been kept at the Bairnsdale School of Mines.Having treated several lots of ore by this method during 1907 and 1908 with unsatisfactory results, the writers thought it desirable to make a detailed investigation on some particular ore, both in the laboratory and on a working scale. The ore selectedwas a parcel of low-grade concentrates from Stirling, a small mining field situated about forty miles to the east of Bairnsdale. This ore was chosen chiefly on account of the heavy and inexplicable volatilization loss which took place even on roasting with the greatest care; the loss amounting to between 10 and 15 per cent. "Most new mining projects require an initial assessment of the locations and volumes of potential acid forming (PAF) waste that is likely to be moved and dumped in surface waste stockpiles. This requires sampling of the waste rock zones and submitting the samples for a series of tests. Key to the outcome of the waste characterisation process is obtaining sufficient samples that are representative of the various rock types both in number and spatial distribution.Various regulatory bodies throughout Australia and the rest of the world are currently struggling with how to define minimum amounts of sampling to achieve realistic estimates without imposing excessive costs and time constraints on a project.This paper addresses two aspects of the process: what constitutes a æsufficientÆ number of samples how to use those samples in determining volumes of likely PAF material.Geostatistical methods of characterising orebodies with large numbers of samples are routinely used in the mining industry by geologists and geostatisticians to estimate and classify Mineral Resources. In theory exactly the same methods can be used to estimate PAF waste locations and volumes.In practice the number and spatial distribution of dedicated PAF waste samples at feasibility stage is typically so small that it is almost impossible to estimate the spatial distribution of PAF material with any degree of confidence at all. Consequently, the common approach is to characterise a few samples from a lithological unit and then assume that they represent the unit as a whole. GENTLEMEN, lt is with much pleasure I meet you tonight at this the second meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, held in Western Australia, and I sincerely thank you for the honour you have conferred upon me in electing me as your President. I greatly appreciate the distinction, and will endeavour to fulfil the duties of the office to the best of my ability, and hope to prove a worthy successor to those gentlemen who have held the position before me. On behalf of the local members of the Institute, I extend a hearty welcome to the members from the other States of the Commonwealth, who have come so far to attend this meeting, and also to the non-members whom we have invited this evening. We are especially pleased to have Mr. Gregory, our Minister of Mines and Railways, and the Government and School of Mines officials with us; and I take this opportunity to thank the Premier, Mr. Gregory, and the Government officials for the assistance given us, and for doing so much to make the visit of our members from the other States so pleasant and instructive. I have also to thank the Mayor and Councillors of Kalgoorlie for the courtesy and hospitality given to our members, which is much appreciated.I assume you want me to follow the time-honoured custom of giving a Presidential address...

This paper is written as a supplement to that of Edwards, Baker and Knight on "The Geology of the Wonthaggi Coalfield" 1, the West Area pit being in an early developmental stage at the time of their paper. The thin seams to the west of Dudley Basin 2 had beenknown for many years but it was not until 1935 that it became necessary to work them. The West Area Pit came into production as Dudley Area Pit approached exhaustion in 1937. From available information it was estimated that early work would be in a 36in. bottom seam. The present top seam was not included in the reserves, but it was to be extracted where it proved thick enough for economical working.THE SEAMSEdwards, Baker and :Knight (1944) had insufficient information to correlate positively the West Area seams with those in the Dudley Basin. Their opinion was, however, that they were a westerly extension of the Bottom Seam. Since then the driving of the present north-east heading towards No. 4 Bench McBride Tunnel has established that the West Area seams are those worked as Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. West Area Top Seam is a seam that occurred above the Bottom Seam in the Dudley Basin. Only sporadic attempts have been made to work it in Central Area, because 30in. was considered an economic minimum height until recent times. This seam should not be confused with Top Seam, Dudley Basin, which lies some 300ft. above the bottom seam measures and except in isolated areas over deeper workings has been eroded away in West Area.

The successful dissolution of the valuable metal components of a solid phase is often a basic requirement for a successful hydrometallurgical treatment process. Sulphide concentrates are often an intermediate product in the production of refined metals. These concentrates need to be further processed to realise the contained metal values in a useful form. Pyrometallurgical techniques have tended to dominate, at least the initial treatment of metal sulphide concentrates. The technology described, Activox«, has been developed specifically for the hydrometallurgical treatment of these sulphide mineral concentrates, in particular those containing copper, nickel or gold. The Activox« dissolution technology coupled with the use of existing, or newly developed, downstream processing techniques, offers alternative processing options for the recovery of full value, saleable metal products. The technology is suitable for application down to relatively small scales opening up the opportunity for on-site production of metals even at modest scale mining Operations.

"The mining industry suffers from a shortage of professional and other workers. Research and analysis has demonstrated a close correlation between high performance in productivity, maintenance and safety. There is also a significant correlation between engagement and performance. It is the hypothesis of the authors that mines can use a strategy of establishing themselves as a high-performance mine to attract and retain high caliber professional people: step 1 is to become best practice in equipment performance (productivity, maintenance and safety) step 2 is to brand the mine as æbest practiceÆ by sharing what has been confidential performance and outcome information with the general industry.Previous research has shown that many professional people are attracted by the prospect of a high achieving site because of the learnings and the support for continually doing better. In addition, a link has been established in previous research between productivity and safety. Operators and drivers are attracted to sites which have fewer dangerous people operating or driving. Good management delivers exceptional performance and a work site which high caliber managers and operational personnel people want to work at. The strategy requires commitment and proper execution but it can work. The strategy needs a specific approach and this paper will discuss this. A case study is provided from a mine which over a nine month period increased dragline performance by 15 per cent and reduced stress on the boom by 30 per cent. This mine paid the employees (professional and operational) $25 000/a less than the major mines but the operators and professional people would not leave; in fact, people were happy to be paid less to work there.CITATION:Lumley, G and Trott, T, 2012. Basicity(aO2−) has been known to affect the physicochemical properties of molten slags in the metallurgical processes. However, because of the impossibility of direct measurement of single-ion activity, various indirect measures such as capacity, redox equilibrium of transition metal ions, activity of basic oxides, and (theoretical) optical basicity have been proposed; but these basicity measures have been restricted within slag systems and the interaction between measuring elements and slag components has affected the quantitative estimation of slag basicity. Recently, since it was reported that solubility of noble metals in molten slags could be an indirect measure of basicity, the influence of slag basicity on the solubility of platinum and silver has been reported. The reaction mechanism of platinum dissolution into basic slags has been reported, whilst that in acidic slags has not (Nakamura and Sano, 1997; Sano and Nakamura, 1997; Nakamura et al, 1998). Richardson reported that the solubility of metals such as cupper, gold, silver, and lead in the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 slag was presumably dependent on the atomic radius and the accommodation ability of the silicate network (Richardson, 1974). Swinbourne and You measured silver solubility in the Na2O-SiO2 slag over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure and suggested that silver would be present as both Ago and Ag0.5 in the slags (Swinbourne and You, 1999). For brevity, these previous works discussed the dissolution mechanism of silver into the slags based on the existence of silver as a neutral or molecular species. However, because the almost chemical reactions occurring in the slag are affected by the basicity, the reaction formula with O2- ion is required based on the ionic characteristics of the slag such as desulphurisation and dephosphorisation reactions as given in Equations 1 and 2, respectively.

The past year has been a difficult one for the mining industry in this country, but an active and successful one for the Branch. Membership has continued to increase, albeit at a slower rate than last year, and with the increase almost all from student membership. I dwelt at some length last year on the continued increase in student membership, which I ascribed largely to deliberate policies adopted by the Branch to foster this area of membership. I don't propose to reiterate these, suffice it to say that as usual, the Otago School of Mines has been a prolific source of student members, and it will be a pity if this source dries up û more on this subject later. In fact, students form just on 29 per cent of the Branch's total membership û a far higher percentage than for any other Branch in the Institute, whose membership as a whole comprises only ten per cent students.

Low displacement fault zones often comprise a mesh of interlinked faults, extensional-shear and purely extensional vein fractures. Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major through going faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf > s3, at least locally) and the condition Pf ~ s3 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid over pressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc. Fluid redistribution in the crust is influenced by maximum hydraulic gradient (not necessarily vertical), by existing permeability anisotropy arising from bedding and other forms of crustal layering, and by structural permeability developed under the prevailing stress field. Strong directional permeability develops in the s2 direction, parallel to fault-fracture intersections within the mesh and orthogonal to fault slip vectors. In particular tectonic settings, stress-controlled permeability allows strongly focused flow through fault-fracture meshes with high potential for mineralisation. Favoured localities for mesh development include short-lived link structures along large-displacement fault zones such as dilational jogs, lateral ramps, and transfer faults.

The mining and concentration operations of New Zealand Steel have been carried out initially from the Waikato North Head (WNH) deposit since 1969 and subsequently from the Taharoa deposit since 1972. Over the years the WNH operation has produced about 1.2 million tonnes of concentrate which has been converted into steel, while total exports to the Japanese Steel Industry from Taharoa reached five million tonnes in February of this year. Recent expansion plans both in domestic steel production and in the ironsand concentrate export market have made it necessary for the company to look closely at, among other areas, the mineral processing of the titaniferous ironsands in both deposits. This paper deals with the recent test work carried out at WNH and Taharoa on the use of the cone concentrator unit as a primary gravity concentrating unit ahead of the magnetic separation stages and as a cleaner concentrator following the primary magnetic separation.

Looking back 25 years, the role of the drill and blast engineer in an Australian mine seemed relatively simple, with the primary focal points being scheduling of the drill rigs, oversize control, and budget control with respect to consumption of both explosives and drill consumables. The choice of explosive selection was relatively simple, though many mines were becoming involved in trials of slurry explosives, emulsion blends, and low density ANFO blends. Guidelines to assist the engineer towards specific fragmentation targets were scarce, environmental constraints were light, and computers were rarely found on the desks of any mining engineers. Wall control blasting was in its infancy, with the bulk of attention being given to appropriate slope design and little real attention given to factors such as explosive distribution, and optimum delay timing and sequencing. Quantitative measurement of blasting performance was rare. The science of blasting, for fragmentation control, wall control, and environmental impact control was about to be born, and was heralded in those years by intense efforts by the explosive manufacturers and a proliferation of research centres throughout the world. Since the early 1980s, the role of the Australian drill and blast engineer has gone through a major metamorphosis, and currently requires a greater depth of scientific understanding than any other specialisation within mining engineering.

In contrast with mining in areas close to the main centres, mining in remote areas is characterised by comparatively high initial investment and relatively high running cost for the life of the mine. This is because of:the real cost of establishing and running the operation at a location distant from the necessary infrastructure; and the perceived risks priced into their costs by the multitude of suppliers involved in the project. Optimal co-operation between the mine and the supplier in developing the right rela tionship and the correct technical solution permit both cost elements to be reduced. This re duction may well mean the difference between success and failure. This paper examines the possibilities for optimising the contribution of the equipment supplier to the overall success of the process. Issues covered include the necessity to provide more than merely equipment fit for the purpose , but also the need to maximise the benefits of equipment ownership over the life of the mine. A simple method of determining the optimum timing for equipment replacement or rebuilding is proposed . Furthermore the maintenance contract (or performance agreement) is suggested as a means of leveraging the supplierÆs commitment to the mining operation. The specific examples are based on experience with mobile equipment but the methodology has relevance to other equipment and supplies.

Over the last ten years geological and mining software products have evolved greatly. Software companies developing such products have focussed almost exclusively on the development of technical aspects of the applications, addressing geological, ore reserve estimation and mine planning problems. These specialist applications, and the many other new technologies that are being developed by a myriad of niche developers, are an essential part of todayÆs hi-tech mining operations. Technology is also being used in many other areas to improve the mining process and there is no doubt that tremendous advances are being made in all these fields. Yet there is something missing. The manner in which the technologies are used and implemented has led to the creation of many independent and inefficient æislands of technologyÆ where a variety of products from different vendors are used to address different, but related problems. Problems occur with unreliable information, data duplication, data redundancy and transferring data between applications that may be incompatible or even run on different computer platforms. These problems impede the flow and availability of information and hamper day-to-day decision-making by mine management. A solution to this problem is to take a holistic view of all the various technical applications and incorporate them into a single information technology solution. This solution must encompass all of the information requirements of a mining operation and must provide facilities that address much of the modern thinking about mine management, including strategic mine planning, value management, key performance indicators, and maintenance of a mineral balance sheet. Gemcom is developing an Integrated Resource Asset Management System (IRAMS), which is an enterprise-wide integrated computer system that encompasses various applications typically found at a mining operation. The core component of the system is a common, open, industry standard database that can be shared by many users from each of the different departments at a mine. Around that central repository are the primary applications that provide the mine with information it needs to operate. Ensuring that the information is reliable, accurate, shareable, timely and consistent will eliminate many inefficiencies, and provide significant benefits to mining companies. In turn these benefits will lead to significant improvements in decision-making, productivity and profitability for the operation. The initial version of the IRAMS system is currently being implemented at the De Beers Venetia Mine in South Africa. The system is being built around a core repository using the Microsoft æBack OfficeÆ architecture, and incorporates key technical applications from Gemcom, Whittle, De Beers Technical Team, Wenco and JKTech. The benefits of enterprise-wide systems have long been recognised in the commercial arena and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as SAP, JD Edwards and MIMS are becoming commonplace in the mining industry. The more forward looking software developers and mining companies realise the need for efficient management of the information gathered during the mining process and can see that the concepts used in ERP systems apply equally to the technical applications as they did to commercial applications. The use of IT in the mining industry has expanded tremendously over the last five years as enabling technology and management acceptance has become more prevalent, and there is considerable room for dramatic growth over the next five years. The evolution of geological and mining software has now reached the stage where mines will yield the greatest returns by integrating the applications used in each area of their operations.

Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.
