Characterisation and Processing of Electronic Waste for the Recovery of Metal Values Electronic waste (e-waste), which is a hazardous waste, can indeed be a good source of metal values especially for Cu, Pb, Sn including the precious metals such as Au, Ag, etc. In the present work a protocol for sorting and disassembly of e-waste consisting of computers, TV sets and mobile phones, as well as the characterisation and processing are investigated. E-waste consists of assorted materials consisting of metals, plastics and polymers, ceramics and glass. These components are classified into nine categories. The components, in which metal is embedded into non-metallic base, require complete pulverisation for liberation of the metal. The liberation size is observed to be around 1 mm. Several stages of crushing, shearing and shredding and grinding are required to achieve the required feed size. It is evident from detailed chemical analysis that the pulverised particulate is quite rich in metal values. Computer waste has 23 per cent metal by weight with over six per cent Cu while TV waste has 20 per cent metal with about 4.5 per cent Cu. Mobile phones are much richer in metal content with about 56 per cent metal including 32 per cent Cu in it. Metal content is observed to be more significant in the larger size classes and Pb and Cd are found to be the major contaminants. Morphological studies show that a substantial fraction of the particles is flat or elongated. Based on detailed characterisation, a flowsheet is developed involving dry and wet methods to separate the metallic materials from the plastics physically. It is established that according to this flowsheet a metal rich fraction with over 90 per cent recovery of the metal values can be achieved. Considering the relatively inexpensive unit operations involved in the flowsheet it is envisaged that it would provide a commercially viable scheme for processing large tonnage of e-waste.

The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. A deterioration in metallurgical performance at each concentrator occurred as a result, with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues. Investigations to determine the reasons for this problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical deterioration.

OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia was built in 2008 with commercial production commencing in early 2009. In addition to recovery of valuable minerals, the flow sheet for this iron oxide-hosted copper-gold deposit has to address the issue of producing a good quality saleable copper concentrate by high selectivity against non-sulfide gangue. Detailed mineralogical studies integrated with the metallurgical test work highlighted that liberation of fluorine-bearing minerals and subsequent very efficient rejection in cleaner flotation was necessary to produce a commercial quality copper-gold concentrate. Bench scale laboratory metallurgical tests and mineralogical studies identified the need to regrind rougher concentrate to a P80 of 20 -25 microns or finer for adequate liberation of the fluorine-bearing minerals. Satisfactory separation of the fluorine-rich gangue material from the valuable copper sulfides requires highly efficient cleaner flotation. This is done by a combination of washed froth cleaning and conventional dilution cleaning. Proven equipment developed to meet similar taxing liberation and separation duties for the treatment of the refractory zinc-lead-silver ores of the Carpentaria-Mount Isa Mineral Province have been selected. The combination of Xstrata Technology's IsaMillÖ and Jameson Cell technologies addressed both the liberation and separation issues in the Prominent Hill concentrator. The energy efficient IsaMillÖ technology both regrinds the rougher concentrate while its inert grinding environment prevents contamination of mineral surfaces with 'debris' ensuring subsequent optimum flotation performance. Heading up the cleaner circuit with a 'scalping' Jameson Cell followed by conventional flotation equipment allows this section to take advantage of the Jameson Cell's high intensity flotation environment and froth washing capability to achieve maximum concentrate grade (at minimum fluorine levels) while maximising recovery through the use of conventional flotation machines. This paper looks at the development of the Prominent Hill flow sheet from the initial mineralogical and laboratory test work to the design, scale-up and early operation of the Prominent Hill regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. The mineralogically-based approach of domaining metallurgical ore types combined with the axiom of size-by-size mineral particle behaviour by liberation class gave a clear understanding of the liberation and separation issues involved in the processing of Prominent Hill ore. Technologies developed to meet much more onerous liberation and separation duties for the treatment of the refractory zinc-lead-silver ores of the Carpentaria-Mount Isa Mineral Province were successfully used to improve concentrate quality by rejecting non-sulfide gangue containing impurities. An IsaMillÖ and a Jameson Cell are included in the circuit for fine grinding and for additional concentrate cleaning. Plant performance since commissioning has justified the approach for metallurgical test work and equipment choices for the flotation circuit.

Global cement production accounts for about five per cent of man-made CO2 emissions (WBCSD, 2002). Such operating practices will increasingly be considered unsustainable, unless significant reductions in environmental impact can be realised by the industry.Slag is a high volume waste product from ironmaking, with about 300 kg of slag being produced per ton of iron. Critically, one ton of slag waste, if used as a replacement feedstock for Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), can prevent around one ton of emitted CO2 since no calcining is required. Slag cement blends can also show superior properties compared to OPC, such as lower heats of hydration and higher late strengths, but more development is needed to overcome their low early strengths. Rapid quenching of molten slag is required to produce æhydraulically-activeÆ binder when reacting with OPC; but water quenching can also require between five to ten tons of water per ton of slag at the plant. æDryÆ granulation (atomisation) is emerging as an alternative technology, the resulting solid product does not require drying, and possibilities exist for recovering heat energy from the hot slag.CSIRO Minerals has well-developed skills and equipment in pilot-scale pyrometallurgical treatment, and granulation of molten slag, including traditional wet, and also dry methods. Techno-economic desktop studies can also be used to help quantify factors such as value-adding of treated waste products, potential reductions in CO2 emissions and carbon credits, reductions in water consumption, and the possible decreased energy costs associated with fine grinding of dry slag granulate.The authors will present preliminary results from slag atomisation/dry granulation testwork (0.5 - 2.5 kg scale) and associated modelling studies, conducted using a æsyntheticÆ and industrial ironmaking slag. Outcomes from a techno-economic study on production of cement utilising wet or dry atomised slag granulate will also be discussed in detail.

The design of the reinforcement systems required to stabilise mine roadways has developed through the application of field measurement techniques. These techniques have allowed the level of security of a given opening to be determined from an assessment of the loading within the reinforcement, the extent of roof deformation and experience. The design systems developed are now used extensively in a wide variety of geological environment. Recent interpretative techniques have been developed to improve the level of confidence when designing roadway reinforcement. The techniques are particularly applicable for roadways subject to either weak materials or extreme stress levels. A second area of application is where roadway advance rates and hence the timing of reinforcement placement are critical. The newly developed techniques include both analytical and computational models. The validated computational techniques allow a more rational approach to investigation of the effect of varying reinforcement type, timing of placement and density on the level of stability achieved.

Although the pattern of metamorphic zones south of the Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault is much obscured by polymetamorphism, displacement of the orthopyroxene isograd by the fault agrees with the displacement of a horizon of "banded aplite" mapped by Andrews (1922). A dextral transcurrent component of 20,000 ft is indicated.INTRODUCTIONThe east-west Thackaringa-Pinnacles Fault (Andrews, 1922; King and Thomson, 1953), one of the major geological structures in the Broken Hill district, New South Wales, cuts across the general north-easterly strike of outcrops and fold structures of the Willyama Complex. The degree of shearing and recrystallization in its unusually wide crush zone and the manner in which adjacent rock units and structures have been dragged into conformity with its strike denote considerable movement on the fault. Information concerning the nature of this movement is of critical importance in the search for possible continuations or repetitions of lead-zinc mineralization south-west of Broken Hill.A transcurrent movement of 20,000 ft, with the southern block moving west, was estimated by Andrews (1922), who correlated prominent outcrops of "banded aplite" at The Pinnacles (north of the fault) and Big Hill (south of the fault). Displacement of this order, however, does not seem sufficient to explain the extent and character of the fault zone. Recent chemical and petrological studies of the banded aplites at The Pinnacles and Big Hill by Vernon (19B1) confirmed their similarity, but indicated an origin by metasomatic replacement of pre-existing folded and metamorphosed rocks. Ore recovered by North Broken Hill Limited as a result of mining operations at its Broken Hill leases is obtained, at the present scale of working, in the proportions of 80% from the North mine and 20% from the British mine sections, and is composed mainly of a silver bearing, sulphide lead and zinc mineral, in association with the gangue materials mentioned later in the text.The lead-zinc sulphide lode at the North mine is deposited in folds in pre-Cambrian sedimentary schists. These folds pitch north-east at approximately 40° and dip north-west at approximately 60°. In plan the deposit appears as two lenses designated on the mine as the "Southern" and "Northern" ore-bodies.The Southern ore-body yields the main tonnage of crude ore. The sulphide mass here overlies a heavy layer of rhodonite which persists with the pitch of the lode. In the central section of this ore-body the sulphide zone is coarse grained and of high grade with a wide range of minerals in the gangue dilution. Quartz, garnet, ftuorite, rhodonite, and felspar are common, whilst chalcopyrites, pyrites, pyrrhotite and green felspar are often present. The Northern ore-body is dolomitic to siliceous in nature. Predicting the physical characteristics of various ore types has for long been a difficult problem during mining. Grade control practices tend to concentrate on the chemical grade of the ore. Estimation of physical characteristics such as beneficiation behaviour is commonly limited to the simplistic application of historical averages. Large amounts of geochemical data are often gathered during the exploration and mining stages of a project, especially in ferrous and base metal deposits. In addition to the elements of principal economic interest, samples are often analysed for suites of gangue constituents to determine whether the mineralisation lies within target specifications. This multi-element data is often put to no other use than this simple chemical classification, yet it may present the geologist or metallurgist with valuable insights into the mineral content and physical characteristics of the deposit. Normative mineral estimates have been used as a method for characterising igneous rocks for almost 100 years. The method establishes and applies a set of sequential rules, by which the chemical components of a sample are assigned to mineral components. Provided that it is possible to make some realistic assumptions about the mineral species likely to be present in a rock unit or deposit and their paragenesis, this approach can be extended to a variety of mineral deposits. The geochemical data that are routinely collected when, for example, drilling iron ore and base metal deposits, can be used to derive estimates of normative mineral content. These estimates can be used to characterise physical or metallurgical aspects of the ore, such as density, beneficiation behaviour and metal recovery. This paper examines the application of normative mineral estimates to a variety of practical resource characterisation problems. The potential for predicting the lump and fines proportions of iron and manganese ores is also discussed.

Two small coral islands in the Pacific Ocean, situated close under the equator, and formerly classed among the Line Islands, have, during the last three or four years risen into prominence owing to the valuable deposits of phosphate of lime discovered on them.The deposits of Ocean and Pleasant Islands are under the control of the Pacific Islands Company (1902) Limited, of London and, Sydney, and the high grade of the phosphate, together with the exceptionally favourable facilities for mining this mineral, of which there are several millions of tons on these islands, give this company advantages which enable them to command the Australian and New Zealand markets, and also to make large contracts with Japan and other countries. Both islands, as far as surface indications are concerned, are entirely constructed of coral, with phosphate on the top from the highest points to the present sea level, there being no sign of volcanic rocks, with the exception of a few pieces of drift pumice on the coast.Banaba (Paanopa according to. the Admiralty charts), also known as Ocean Island, was discovered in 1804. WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. This paper reviews methods for grade estimation in short-term mine planning for block caving. Two particular tools are used: Ordinary Kriging and Simple Kriging with moving averages. It is also considered the influence of draw characteristics on the grade estimation process. Reference is made to mine case study data and analysis. These demonstrate that operational grade estimation is not a trivial process. It must take into consideration: the grade variability (in terms of ore and dilution), sampling interval, geological and geotechnical characteristics, geometrical layout and draw characteristics. Significant improvements appear possible in short-term planning if variogram analysis, as well as kriging methodologies, are introduced into the operational grade estimation process.

In this climate of increasing demand for commodities, it is becoming necessary to expand and optimise existing bulk material handling facilities in order to increase capacity to satisfy demand. Production capacity in these facilities is often adversely impacted during the expansion process. A successful and proven strategy to reduce this impact is to bring the additional capacity online in stages coinciding with routine maintenance or other short shutdowns. Compatibility of the automation systems with staged upgrades in capacity is the key to achieving a successful outcome. Since 1994, Hatch has been researching a generic, highly configurable product transport control system that can be reconfigured to cater for plant expansions or modifications without incurring significant risk to production capacity. In 2002, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPB IO) recognised the need for such a generic Route Selection and Sequencing (RSS) system and engaged Hatch to build a generic RSS system as part of the $US351 million BHPB IO Products and Capacity Expansion (PACE) project. In 2004, Hatch successfully deployed such a generic configurable control system at BHPB IO Port Hedland Ore Handling Facility. This generic system is known as the Hatch Product Transport (HPT) System.

Drilling at Ipswich during the last twelve years by the Queensland Department of Mines has proved large quantities of reserves which have assured the security of the field for many years to come. This is perhaps the greatest contribution to the development of the field since its discovery in 1827.The drilling campaign commenced in 1950 and by the end of 1961 comprised 242 holes totalling 180,220 ft.Intersections of formations and seams, accompanied by detailed surface mapping, led to more precise knowledge of the geology of the field than was previously possible, and clarified many problems of correlation. Productive formations are part of the Middle Triassic Ipswich Coal Measures, a 4,300 ft sequence of fresh-water sediments with some interbedded volcanics. They are overlain by the Upper Triassic Bundamba Group and the Lower Tertiary Booval Group.Reserves disclosed by drilling amount to 171,487,000 tons, comprising 109,407,000 tons "measured" and 62,080,000 tons "indicated". The security of these reserves encouraged many collieries to instal modern efficient mining machinery and washing plants.The climax of recent development of the resources of the field will be the commissioning in 1966 of a £33 million 360 MW power station in the Swanbank district which will consume 14 million tons of coal during its 30 year life and will have a peak demand of some 20,000 tons per week.Drilling is continuing and is expected to prove additional reserves which will justify further development of the field.INTRODUCTIONUntil 1949 there had been no concerted effort to test systematically the resources of the whole Ipswich field. Fifty two known holes totalling 30,500 ft had been drilled, eight of them by the Department of Mines, but because of poor core recovery and inadequate records most of them were of little use in a comprehensive assessment.Development of the field was being retarded by uncertainty regarding reserves and by the general state of the coal mining industry. This paper presents the development of a regrind facility design at BHP BillitonÆs Leinster Nickel Operations (LNO) in Western Australia. The recovery opportunity was identified from an analysis of plant operating data together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements on relevant tailings streams from LNO. A laboratory procedure was developed to determine the potential recovery improvement of installing a regrind facility at LNO. The last step in formulating the process flow sheet and defining the process design criteria was to construct and operate a pilot plant, which incorporated four banks of flotation cells and an Xstrata M20 Isa Mill. Pilot plant on/off trials were used to define the expected metallurgical benefit. A prefeasibility engineering design and cost estimate was completed. Following a successful internal business evaluation, a feasibility study is currently underway.

It cannot be said that accurate and reliable ore reserve estimation is the fundamental of any mining operation success. Estimation techniques which are used to estimate the grade distribution of an orebody together with the assessment of uncertainty and risk have a vital influence on the success of any optimisation algorithm. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for assigning grade values to blocks. Various attempts have been made in order to compare geostatistical estimated methods for ore reserve estimation. This paper aims to evaluate the sensitivity of different estimation methods over changing the block dimension. For this reason, several block models with different dimensions were derived in Chador Malu iron ore mine which is located in 180 km northeast of Yazd in the centre of Iran. Each block model was estimated by different estimation methods such as nearest neighbours (NN), inverse distance (ID) and ordinary kriging (OK). The results of each estimation methods were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blastholes drilled in the ore over four benches of the pit. The results signify that by estimating the large block size, no significant improvement occurred due to the employment of different estimation techniques. Furthermore, the grades estimated based on ID method is more reliable, but OK methods estimated more accurate tonnage.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.
