The Trident Gold Deposit is centred on the historical Higginsville Mining Centre, between the world class gold centres of St Ives (+15 Moz) and Norseman (+6.5 Moz) in Western AustraliaÆs productive eastern goldfields. It lies towards the southern end of the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone belt in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton. The current in situ resource for Trident is estimated at 840 000 ounces, with production to date in excess of 500 000 ounces.Trident is hosted primarily within a thick, weakly differentiated gabbro with subordinate mafic and ultramafic lithologies and comprises a series of north-northeast trending, shallowly north plunging ore zones. The deposit comprises two main mineralisation styles; thin, lode-style, nuggety laminated quartz veins (Athena and Artemis) that formed along major shear zones primarily at the contacts between the various mafic and ultramafic lithologies; and large wallrock-hosted ore-zones comprising sigmoidal quartz tensional vein arrays and associated metasomatic wall rock alteration (eastern zone, western zone and Apollo) hosted exclusively within the gabbro.The thin laminated quartz vein lodes are important to the Trident Gold Deposits production profile as they constitute 33 per cent of the metal from only 14 per cent of the tonnes. The delineation, grade estimation and extraction of these lodes require a disproportionate amount of geological and engineering input due to the small scale variability in width, grade and direction. Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health rleterinratinn_

The procedures for an audit and review process upon which continuous improvement programs may be based are described. The case for regular audits of mining operations to establish performance trends is advanced. Analysis of performance data using the parameters of the capacity equation used in conjunction with learning curves is described. The extrapolation of learning curves in performance target setting, operating and capital cost budgeting is advocated.

In his letter of resignation as General Superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS) prior to taking up aconsulting position at imperial Smelting, G.K. Williams wrote that he considered his major contributions at BHAS were:the development of large scale sintering machines;the double tuyere-row blast furnace; continuous lead refining.Despite his well deserved reputation as a scientist, based on his advancement of the metallurgical chemistry underlying lead refining processes, Williams reveals that he considered commercial implementation as the ultimate measure of technological success. Furthermore, he clearly did not differentiate between the scientific and the empirical as a means of achieving that end.

A belt press filter (BPF) handbook containing practical information for the reference of plant designers and operators has been created as part of Australian Coal Association Research Program project C23040. The handbook combines research and experience with newer generations of equipment and circuitry. BPFs are increasingly finding application in the dewatering of thickener underflow tailings slurries due to changing environmental regulations, difficulty obtaining tailings storage facility approvals and limited water availability. Sources of BPF inefficiency and low availability stem from a lack of understanding of the key operational parameters that affect their performance. This lack of understanding typically leads to increased operational expenditure due to suboptimal reagent dose rates and increased maintenance costs, or decreases in plant availability due to excessively high filter product water contents and equipment failure. It is essential for the continued economically competitive operation of Australian coal handling and preparation plants that complex factors affecting BPF operational performance are clearly defined and understood. Installation and operation handbooks are often provided to sites with new installations, but these manuals are manufacturer- or even model-specific and are often focused on mechanical maintenance. The handbook identifies industry ‘best practice’ and improvements developed by other sites, such as extra spray bars, air system bleed valves, guarding designs, feed and filtrate protection screens and roller tensioning systems. Equations to predict optimum operating conditions – such as free moisture, belt tension and reagent dose rates, with simple feed-specific variable inputs – have been developed from site-specific test work. The correlations developed provide a benchmark for plants to attempt to achieve. This provides operators and process engineers with a tool to explain BPFs and assist them in optimising the performance of BPF dewatering plants of both contemporary and less modern design.CITATION:Mathewson, D and Eschebach, D, 2015. In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

In designing climate exposed soil structures such as caps and covers over mine waste it is necessary to include the wetting and drying influences of the local climate in order to accurately predict the net water, vapour and oxygen fluxes across the ground surface and through the base of the covers. The most advanced evaporative flux modelling tools currently available to practitioners have been limited to rigorous one-dimensional models (ie SoilCover) or semi-empirical two-dimensional models (ie Hydrus-2D). It is common practice to use the rigorous one-dimensional evaporative flux model results to develop a surface boundary function that can then be applied within a saturated/unsaturated two-dimensional model. However, this is not an ideal situation and results in a further approximation of the real system being modelled. This paper will highlight the use of a new modelling tool, VADOSE/W, which brings existing, rigorously formulated evaporative flux theory into the familiar setting of a two-dimensional model. The model is enhanced for simultaneous two-dimensional oxygen gas transport analysis, which has direct application in the mine waste industry. A key focus of the paper will be addressing the limitations of one-dimensional analysis for cover systems on sloping and hummocky terrain.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. Four quartz latite rheoignimbrite units (units I to IV) mapped in the Goboboseb Mountains have been traced to their eruptive source, the Messum intrusive complex; this is a complex multistage ring structure (18 km diameter) with well defined gabbroic, monzonitic, and syenitic intrusive phases, and a central ring zone containing mixed rhyolitic to latitic agglomerates. Three of the four quartz latite units are correlated with the upper and lower (2 units) Springbok quartz latites outcropping some 90-130 km north of McIsum. This implies minimum volumes of 300-500 km for wits I and III (Lower Springbok) and 2200-2600 km for unit IV (Upper Springbok). This latter unit is still ti 300 m thick at its outcrop limit, some 130 km from Messum. Each of the four units represents single cooling units. Lithologically, each can be divided into three zones: A basal, dark grey to black flinty or glassy zone, often with highly attenuated fiamme (ressembling flow banding); a central massive and strongly recrystallised zone; and an upper variable zone which exhibit breccias, contorted flow banding, and amygdaloidal to pumiceous clasts. Their overall characteristics tend to be intermediate between ash flows and lava flows. The rheoignimbrites are interpreted as the oproducts of dense, high temperature (950¦-1100 C) ash flows which underwent rheomorphism and lava-like flow prior to their final cooling.These large scale eruptions are related to the initial rifting of Africa and S. America, possiby in response to a major hot spot.

Asian countries are now facing very crucial aspects of urban living under the recession of the economy. The current situation is such that those hard aspects may make the living standards worse and worse in the next century, unless proper measures are taken on the infrastructure for urban lives. More than half of the population in Asian countries are now living in cities. Nowadays, the socio-economic development of the Asian countries has been closely linked to the development of world economy because of the border-less economy system. The population inflow to big cities is inevitable as the Asian countries step into an industrialised economy. Such a tendency will be further accelerated when Asia becomes a centre of financial business in the 21st century. The government of any country has realised the situation very well. The United Nations has established a specific agency to solve the problems caused by the rapid urbanisation. This global agency for urbanisation is named United Nations Center for Human Settlement and it is so called Habitat. There are three Habitat offices in the world, Nairobi in Kenya, Santiago in Chile and Fukuoka in Japan. The activities of Habitat offices cover a wide field of issues such as housing, urban development, infrastructure and environment, etc. Habitat Fukuoka Office is serving Asia and Pacific in co-operation with the government offices concerned.

Late in 2005 it became apparent that cave propagation at the Northparkes Mine was not progressing as planned. By mid-2006 sufficient Reserves were identified to warrant an extensive drill and blast program to assist in cave propagation. This program began late in 2006 and concluded early 2007. A significant challenge faced was the drilling and blasting of holes between 75 - 240 m in length in the South Wedge in Lift 2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody. The project set new benchmarks in production drilling and charging in underground metalliferous mining. This paper discusses the drill and blast designs, the challenges and the operational issues encountered with this project. Also highlighted are ways in which these were overcome.

The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. The chemistry of the pyrometallurg- ical recovery of copper is briefly reviewed in relation.to copper recovery methods.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) was developed in Britain during the 1950's as a process which could produce zinc from a blast furnace. Since then it has evolved into an efficient means of producing zinc and lead from lower grade raw materials, both of primary and secondary origin. These changes have been in response to the need to improve the cost competitive position of the ISF in a climate of decreasing metal prices. The improvements at the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited have resulted from work undertaken in four main areas: 1. Changes in plant design and operating practice to give more stable furnace operation. 2. Improvements to the quality of sinter being charged to the furnace. 3. Improved monitoring of process variables and the formulation of control strategies based on the improved data. 4. Increased understanding of the processes occuring within the furnace shaft to allow predictive modelling to be undertaken. Work in these areas is still progressing but the work to date has resulted in a significant improvement in the production rate and efficiency of operation.

Every mine is situated within a water catchment – a catchment with potentially many other land uses. A mine may take up a relatively small area in that catchment, but its operations have the potential to affect the whole catchment and long after that mine has ceased to operate. Therefore, the residents of any given catchment have the right to feel secure in the knowledge that their catchment, and indeed the wider environment, will not be degraded by mining activities. Much conflict can arise when this confidence does not exist.But, imagine if a community not only felt confident that their catchment would not be degraded by mining activities, but was also confident that their catchment would be left in a better and continuously improving condition – with improving water quality, biodiversity and soil - and a strengthening, more resilient economy. Thick clay tills below potash mine tailings and brine ponds are important natural barriers protecting fresh water aquifers in Saskatchewan. Centrifuge modelling was applied to assess geochemical processes and impacts of dilute brine (0.1 M NaCl) migration through clay till core samples obtained from non saline, unoxidised clay till at a mine site. At accelerated gravity of 876 + g, during each day of centrifuge modelling, flow driven through a 52 mm length core simulated transport through a 45 m thick clay over ~2100 years. Hydraulic conductivity, monitored continuously before and during brine permeation, was low and relatively constant (8.5 + 10-12 m/s), confirming that confining stresses prevent permeability increase. Core density and porosity measurements confirmed that reactive transport occurred under realistic in situ conditions. Breakthrough (defined by C/C0 = 0.5) of non-reactive Cl- occurred at 25 days. The slight delay for Na+ breakthrough, associated with small increases in Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations in the effluent were attributed to ion exchange, but carbonate reactions were relatively unimportant. Cation exchange analysis of core samples was inconclusive without corrections for porewater Na+ and carbonate dissolution. Geochemical processes that were observed during centrifuge modelling were successfully simulated using the 1D geochemical transport code PHREEQC. Solute transport was dominated by diffusion with limited ion exchange to delay Na+ migration. Brine would not break through a 45 m thick clay for tens of thousands of years. Based on these findings, the thick clay till at this site, if laterally extensive and undisturbed by drilling activity, is likely to act as an effective natural barrier to vertical brine migration over the long term.

The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

The importance of using disc cutters for rock excavation is reflected by their wide application in hard rock cutting machines such as tunnel boring machines and raise borers. The forces involved in the cutting process are those due mainly to thrust and rolling forces and are greater than that required by cutting picks. An interesting feature of cutting with discs is the formation of surface crushing, surface and sub-surface chipping and primary crack formation. Experimental, as well as analytical, work has been carried out to determine the optimum spacing between the disc cutters to control primary crack orientation. Wedge bit indenters were used to simulate disc cutters. The paper concludes by proposing a new approach to rock excavation by hybrid cutting based on controlling the primary crack Orientation.
