"PREFACEAt the CIM Annual General Meeting in Quebec City, R.E. Pike of The Toronto-Dominion Bank described how the Canadian banking industry worked with the minerals industry to assemble the large capital requirements for resource projects in Canada and overseas. He developed a profile of the mining industry and Canadian banking, both being important sectors of the Canadian economy and global in context. He also outlined the banking and financing partnership that existed in the past. In looking to the future and challenge that lies ahead f or each industry, Mr. Pike questioned whether the financing practices of the 1970s will be acceptable over the next decade. In that regard, he highlighted the risks that impact on each industry and illustrated how that financing partnership might evolve in response to those forces. The folio wing is a synopsis of his paper.IntroductionThe Canadian mining and metals industry is prominent in the domestic economy and respected internationally. Any measure of its performance illustrates that status-percentage of GNP, employment, exports, capital investment, size relative to other producing nations, etc.Energy, Mines and Resources Canada has forecast that the non-fuel minerals industry will grow in real terms by an average annual rate of 3.0% over the period 1981 to 1991. Using the GNP as reference, that growth in non-fuel mineral production will represent 7.7% of GNP. In translating that growth to capital expenditure, the EMR Canada estimates the aggregate amount at $43.8 billion ('79 dollars) or approximately 12% of total business investment in Canada during the 10-year period.About half of the $43.8 billion will be devoted to the ferrous sector-$8.4 billion in iron ore mining and $12.4 billion in the steel industry. Capital investment in nonferrous s projects is estimated at $13.3 billion, and it is projected at $6.7 billion for industrial minerals. The residual $3.0 .billion is exploration spending."

Mineral discoveries and subsequent extraction have led to the establishment of many small communities, some major towns and a few cities . In Canada, such developments have essentially occurred without benefit of long-range regional or local planning. In the past, this was not a cause for concern. Now, however, rising expectations and reorientation of social values have placed increasing responsibility on government and industry to ensure the long-term viability of communities and regions. Such responsibility means large investments by government in infrastructure and by industry in extractive and processing plants. Uncertainty in the interpretation of ore reserve estimates becomes a critical factor. The traditional methods of reporting reserves - "proven", "probable" , "possible" - may be useful in individual mine production planning, but they are inadequate for planning industrial and public infrastructure, The need for a better information base is critical, with clear and precise definitions of what is being reported, but we are a long way from achieving it. The challenge is therefore to develop a closer professional relationship between government and industry and to tie mineral development to long-range regional strategies.

Today, in Australia, it is increasingly common to see agreements between Indigenous peoples and resource companies being achieved generally as Indigenous Land Use Agreements or agreements pursuant to the ?right to negotiation? process under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth). Despite progress in this area, resource development on Indigenous lands is not without its challenges for both the resource proponents and the Indigenous parties. History demonstrates that resource development on Indigenous lands has produced struggles between the traditional owners of the land and the resource proponents. In Australia their relationship is generally defined by issues of access to land and assuring continued access to the land for the life of the project. In this context, divisions in Indigenous communities often emerge. The proposed resource project can have the effect of polarising members of an Indigenous community. It may be regarded by some traditional land owners as an advantageous opportunity for the community and by others as a hazard to country and culture. The process of agreement making has proved not only a test for the Indigenous community but also for the resource proponent. In this paper we undertake a contemporary case study of a proposed Australian resource related-development project on Indigenous lands. This project involved a multi-billion gas hub precinct proposed at James Price Point in the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The James Price Point proposal produced a litany of challenges for all parties. The traditional owners faced fundamental social and human rights issues, including a minority opposition to the project, the project's potential cultural heritage impact, the threat of compulsory acquisition of their native title interest by a State government due to an initial failure to settle an agreement, a fracture of their unsettled land claim and a minority rejection of the agreement ultimately reached. Additionally, the ?green? lobby also rejected the proposed gas hub on environmental grounds bringing the green lobby into direct conflict with both the traditional owners in favour of the project and the resource proponent. Ultimately, Woodside announced its decision not to proceed with the proposed gas precinct at James Price Point, in April 2013. In this paper we analyse the complexity of the James Price Point gas hub negotiations with the traditional owners which resulted in an Agreement that promised to deliver substantial benefits for the Indigenous communities. We question why such a favourable and beneficial agreement for the Indigenous community also produced the plethora of challenges and concerns and we consider how future negotiation processes could be better structured to avoid the difficulties that have confronted Indigenous land owners and resource proponents alike.

"Abstract - The Draa Sfar polymetallic deposit, at about 16 km NW of Marrakech in Morocco, is a massive sulfide zone at the contact between an underlying volcanic and an overlying clastics sequence. The mineralized body is a flat lens with schistosity and "boudinage," tilted to the west and with a strong dip to the east. The lens extends over a strike length of about 2 km and from surface to a depth of about 1 km, with thickness varying from 1 m to almost 30 m. It has been intersected by about one hundred surface drill holes and, in its south part, by about thirty underground fan holes from two exploration levels at depths of 300 m and 400 m. On these two levels, the massive sulfide zone has been channel sampled over a cumulative length of about 0.7 km. Results from drill and channel samples are used to estimate the resources of the orebody according to several methods: sections, polygons around intercepts on a longitudinal plan, grids on the same longitudinal plan with various distance weighting methods including kriging and, finally, a 3D grid with the same range of interpolators. A comparison of the various estimates delineates the important factors in deriving resources for this type of deposit. Those factors are mostly geological and related to the interpretation of the geometry of the two limiting surfaces of the zone. For the 3D gridding, the authors have devised a new and original method that constrains the interpolation of blocks from samples to a geometry of limiting surfaces. The resulting model shows internal grade variations that parallel fluctuations of zone thickness and orientation without having to re-orientate the search window in each block. Résumé - Le gisement polymétallique de Draa Sfar, situé à environ 16 km au NW de Marrakech est un horizon de sulfure massif au contact d’une formation volcano-sédimentaire de base et d’une formation détritique sur-jacente. Le corps minéralisé se présente sous forme d’une méga-lentille aplatie, schistosée, boudinée et déversée vers l’ouest avec un fort pendage vers l’est s’étendant sur une longueur de 2 km et une profondeur de près de 1 km avec une épaisseur variant de moins d’un mètre à près de 30 m. Il a été reconnu par plus d’une centaine de sondages de surface et, dans sa partie sud, par une trentaine de trous souterrains en éventail à partir de deux niveaux à des profondeurs respectives de 300 m et 400 m. Sur ces mêmes niveaux, des traçages ont permis de rainurer le minerai sur une longueur cumulée de 0.7 km. Les données de sondage et de rainurage ont servi à estimer les ressources du gisement selon plusieurs méthodes : sections, polygones sur longitudinale, grille sur longitudinale avec différentes pondérations en fonction des distances incluant le krigeage et enfin grille tridimensionnelle avec le même éventail de pondérateurs. La comparaison des estimés obtenus permet de mettre en évidence les facteurs importants dans l’estimation des ressources de ce type de gisement. Ces facteurs sont essentiellement géologiques et relatifs à l’interprétation de la géométrie des limites des corps minéralisés. Pour l’estimation sur grille tridimensionnelle, on a mis au point une technique originale qui calque l’interpolation des blocs à partir des échantillons sur cette géométrie des surfaces de contact. Le modèle résultant montre des variations internes de teneurs qui épousent les fluctuations d’épaisseur et d’orientation de la zone sans qu’il soit nécessaire de ré-orienter les fenêtres de recherche dans chaque bloc."

"Abstract - An estimation of resources of structurally complex gold lodes and stockworks represents a challenging task for geoscientists due to the complex geometry of the lodes and discontinuous grade. In the present case study, the resource of a gold stockwork has been estimated by uniform conditioning after the lode has been subdivided into geostatistically defined domains using the indicator probability model. The indicator probability model represents a powerful tool for structural interpretation of the mineralization and can be applied when traditional 3D volume constraining methods (wireframing) have failed to produce a unique, non-subjective model. For comparison, the resources of the same zone have been estimated without domaining. Results of the study clearly show that estimates obtained without domaining of the mineralization can yield a substantial error due to excessive smoothing of the grade.Application of uniform conditioning for modelling the grade distribution has a significant advantage over linear methods (e.g., ordinary kriging). Uniform conditioning enables estimation of local recoverable resources at different selective mining unit sizes that can be substantially smaller than the drilling density without creation of biases or over smoothed local values."

CANADIANS are world leaders in marketing metal and mineral products. Noranda Sales Corporation Ltd. is an international metal and mineral product marketing company operating from Toronto and London, England, where it operates a wholly owned sales subsidiary and is a 50% partner in Rudolf Wolff and Company Ltd., a charter member and the largest metal broker on the London Metal Exchange. Noranda Sales employs 97 people, of whom 52 are university trained and professionally competent in international resource product marketing. We market for 19 companies or divisions in the Noranda Group and 39 companies for whom we act as agent, consultant and purchaser of resource production. Our business in 1976 was 1.5 billion dollars carried out in 45 countries and covering 24 products and materials. Today, ownership of most of the mining industry in Canada has transferred back to Canadians, and this is said with the knowledge that a significant part of the Canadian industry has been Canadian owned and managed from its very early days. Noranda Mines Limited is such an example. It was born in 1922 as the result of a copper-gold showing at Noranda, Quebec, discovered by Ed Horne, a prospector, financed with a grubstake by a syndicate mainly composed of New York businessmen. Shortly after the discovery, when the shares of the company had risen, the syndicate was sold to Canadian interests and, since that time, Noranda has been dominantly Canadian owned and certainly Canadian managed. Today, over 90% of Noranda's shareholders are Canadian, who hold an equivalent percentage of the stock.

Acidic, metal-rich waters generated at working metal mines and abandoned mine sites are generally considered to be major pollutants of the environment. However, the metals they contain often have significant value of their own, or as sources of useful mineral products. We have developed novel bioreactor systems that facilitate the selective recovery of various transition metals (e.g. copper, zinc and iron) as defined minerals that can be recovered and recycled. The bioreactors use novel species of acidophilic bacteria. Ferrous iron is oxidised by Ferrovum myxofaciens, a specialist bacterium that forms large amounts of exopolymers and grows as filamentous streamers in flowing mine waters, and the ferric iron generated is precipitated as the mineral schwertmannite, a small proportion of which is used to remove any arsenic present in mine water. Copper and zinc are precipitated as sulphides using H2S generated by consortia of acidophilic and acid-tolerant sulphate-reducing bacteria in a continuous flow, on-line low pH bioreactor. Transition metal sulfides can be segregated by precipitating them, either on-line or off-line, at different pH values. The modular units that have been developed can be configured to treat mine waters of different chemistries. A hypothetical acidic (pH 2.5) mine water stream containing 500 mg/L iron, 100 mg/L of copper and zinc, 50 mg/L of aluminum and manganese, 2 mg/L of arsenate, and discharged at a rate of 10 L/s, is used as an example of the potential application of the mineral-generating bioreactors. The environmental benefits and economic implications of considering mine waters as resources rather than wastes are discussed.

"Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action.Through tighter control, ""insurance"" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.IntroductionA straight grate indurator, or pelletizing machine, consists of a continuo us moving train of pallets on which a feed stream of unfired, ""green"" pellets is deposited on a hearth layer o f fired pellets. This bed moves through several zones in the furnace where it is dried, preheated, fired and cooled by streams of gases which are pulled or blown through the bed by a series o f large process fan s. Control systems for straight grate plants are designed to maintain gas flow through the machine to ensure that sufficient time and heat are available to raise the temperature of the entire green bed to 1300°C where hematite bonding take s place.For the pas t two year s a new approach to control systems using microprocessor-based instrumentation has been designed and tested in an existing plant with a straight grate indurating furnace processing magnetite ore. The purpose of the test was to determine the most efficient operating setpoints for all levels of production above fifty per cent of design capacity. Through a combination of feed forward control, variable setpoints and additional loops, significant savings have been realized. Thus far the project has taught us much about control systems design and operation, energy utilization, and the process itself."

"Abstract - Traditionally, the emphasis in ore and reserve inventory has been to provide fairly simple definitions and presentations for reporting to shareholders and the investing public. The recent introduction of the mineral resource category aims to take into account the "part of the deposit that cannot yet be produced or extracted legally and profitably." Recent proposals still place insufficient emphasis on relating resource/reserve reporting definitions more closely to the needs of mining and exploration operators for the estimation and inventory of these basic material assets.In most schemes, significant ambiguities and shortcomings remain. These concern the potential economic interest of resources, the concept of continuity which is fundamental to the estimation of volumes, mass and grades, the objectives of the production feasibility study and the requirements of the geology, engineering and economic appraisals leading to it, and the "availability" of the permits required to start mine development. Up to now, no industry-wide formal consensus has yet been reached for any of these steps, nor for reconciliation between successive statements.A resource/reserve inventory scheme is presented here that is based on ISO 9000 principles and the Australasian system. Explicit criteria and transition points are proposed to define resource and reserve. Similarly, appropriate criteria are proposed to classify the three mineral resource and two ore reserve categories, based on geological and value continuity and on the objectives of the feasibility study. This scheme offers a way to develop ISO 9001 certification of resource/reserve estimation procedures for mining operations and supply exploration companies with an appropriate inventory system, to allow better information for the shareholders and the investing public.Résumé - L’objectif des inventaires des minerais et des réserves est, depuis le début du siècle, de fournir des définitions simples et d’ordre général visant les actionnaires et le public investisseur. L’introduction d’une catégorie de « ressources minérales » fournira un cadre tenant compte de la "portion d’un gisement qui ne peut encore être extraite ou exploitée légalement et à profit." Cependant, les propositions récentes de systèmes d’inventaires ne comportent pas des définitions des ressources et réserves qui tiennent compte suffisamment des besoins des opérateurs en exploitation et en exploration minière.La plupart des systèmes comportent des ambiguïtés et des carences. Citons la susceptibilité d’exploitation commerciale des ressources, la continuité qui est au centre de l’estimation des volumes, masses et teneurs, les objectifs de l’étude de la faisabilité de la mise en production, le niveau requis des travaux de géologie, d’ingénierie et d’économique qui y mènent, ainsi que la disponibilité des permis dont dépend la mise en production. Il n’y a jusqu’à maintenant aucun consensus dans l’industrie sur ces points, ni sur des procédures de réconciliation entre les estimations successives.Le système d’inventaire des ressources/réserves proposé ici s’appuie sur la structure ISO 9000 et le système australien. Des critères et des points tournants explicites sont établis pour définir les ressources et les réserves. "One of the corporate values mentioned by many companies deals with respect for people. This paper discusses one aspect of this value, namely, the need for clarity of accountabilities and authorities. The job of the manager in achieving this goal is analyzed and the benefits of enhancing the manager-employee conversation outlined. IntroductionCorporate values usually refer to the standards of behaviour that the leaders of the organization expect of all employees, including themselves, in carrying out their duties. Terms such as integrity, respect for the individual, continuous improvement, continuous learning, teamwork, speed, and innovation are quite common. The company-specific values are typically developed by the top executives of the company, and then tested with a broader group of employees. Where the process works, employees have a good understanding of what behaviour is expected of them in doing their work, in making difficult decisions, and in interacting with others.Having spent considerable time in his career investigating and studying the management systems at over 50 of the most successful companies in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, the author has had the opportunity to visit organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, 3M, Xerox, Intel, Toyota, NEC, Komatsu, British Airways, and Eastman Chemical. These experiences, together with the work of many other researchers, including the work of Dr. Elliott Jacques, have helped significantly to form the thoughts expressed below.Rather than reviewing the creation of corporate values and their deployment through the organization, these remarks focus on issues over which managers and employees have some control. The value in which managers can have significant impact deals with people and the respect shown them in the workplace. The component of respect to be emphasized is to be clear about expectations or accountabilities for oneself and the people who report to you, and to ensure that personal authority matches those expectations."

"For a mine section comprising 100 different stoping activities, there are ~10158 different possible stoping sequences to explore in the mine schedule optimization search and this figure is indicative of the challenge posed in maximising profitability through mine schedule optimization. Any viable excavation timetable must satisfy all conditions that will constrain feasible sequences. In general, consideration of additional constraint will tend to reduce profitability. Geomechanical constraints on mine schedules, introduced with the aim of avoiding excavation instabilities, can be established for underground mine schedule optimization processes but, currently, this is done only rather crudely; precedence relations between excavation activities (stoping or development) are encoded to produce particular stope sequence patterns (e.g. ‘chevron’ or pyramidal sequences).The work reported aimed to investigate automated processes for formulation of such geomechanical constraints. The timetable optimization approach to the problem precipitated a fresh look at time dependent, and excavation sequence dependent, deformation. Abundant evidence emerged that supported the notion that any methodology developed that failed to account for such time and sequence dependencies was itself bound to failure. Yet, it was also recognised that any deviation at all from an assumption of linear elasticity for geomechanical numerical modeling, adopted to inform geomechanical constraint formulation, would rapidly lead to impractical levels of computational effort.Thus the approach presented here represents a compromise: the elastic stress fields induced by individual mining activities are computed for each activity, independently considered within a computational domain identical to that of all other activities. These are stored in a database. Instability risk for a specific sequence of mine activities can be assessed through superimposition of stress fields drawn from the pre-computed database. Time stamps allocated to events corresponding to the excavation processes permit the conversion of the sequence of elastic stress fields into a time table of stress fields. For specific locations within the computational domain, the aggregate effect of the sequence of mine activities leads to stress-time histories having a castellated appearance, a result of the near instantaneous response of an elastic medium to the excavation perturbations. Time dependent deformation responses are crudely allowed for through the re-profiling these castellated histories through graphical construction of curved responses, where the curve gradients are related to a viscous parameter. Such curves form the basis for a geomechanical constraint formulation to be adopted for mine schedule optimization."

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) exposures are a serious occupational health hazard in underground mines. While the complex nature of DPM makes direct analysis difficult, its primary component, elemental carbon (EC), can be used as surrogate. The near real-time FLIR Airtec monitor measures EC mass based on laser extinction. It was developed for use in underground metal/non-metal mines, and calibrated to the NIOSH Method 5040. Its effectiveness has not been demonstrated in coal mines, however, where coal-sourced EC could produce analytical interference. To gain preliminary insights regarding the Airtec’s performance in the presence of coal dust, experiments were conducted in a controlled laboratory chamber. The Airtec EC results consistently underestimated Method 5040 EC for both respirable-sized and submicron coal dusts. While underestimation of coal-sourced EC bodes well for limiting coal interference for DPM measurement, one key reason for the observed trend was non-uniform coal particle deposition on the Airtec filter. This may be problematic in coal mines where DPM and coal dust occur together in the instance that DPM deposition is also non-uniform. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard, and underground miners have the potential for relatively high exposures due to their work in confined environments with large diesel equipment (NIOSH, 2011). DPM is heterogenous and complex in terms of its chemical composition (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006), but elemental (EC) and total carbon (TC) are often used as analytical surrogates (Birch & Noll, 2004; Noll et al, 2015). EC is the solid “soot” component of DPM, whereas TC also includes particulate organic carbon (OC) (Noll et al., 2007). EC and OC can be measured in filter samples using the standard NIOSH Method 5040 (NIOSH, 2003), and summed to obtain TC. In US mines, TC has been adopted as the analytical surrogate for DPM in regulatory activities. In metal/non-metal mines, personal exposures are limited under 30 CFR Part 57. In coal mines, limitations are made on emissions from each piece of equipment (30 CFR Part 72) rather than for personal exposures. This is because coal dust has the potential to interfere with TC measurements in personal samples. In some other countries, and for non-regulatory purposes in the US, EC is also commonly used as a surrogate for DPM in mine monitoring applications [e.g., see AIOSH, 2013). EC generally exhibits a linear correlation with TC (Birch & Cary, 1996; Noll et al., 2006 and 2007) but unlike TC measurements, which are analytically intensive, EC can be determined more simply using a laser absorption/extinction principle on filter samples (Noll et al., 2013)."

RÉSUMÉ La restauration du site minier Poirier, à Joutel s?est déroulée entre 1998 et 2001. Le principal élément des travaux a été la restauration du parc à résidus et des zones d?épanchement qui totalisaient 4,5 millions tonnes de résidus répartis sur une superficie de 74 hectares. Les résidus sont fortement générateurs de drainage minier acide. La première partie de la présentation consiste en un bref rappel du concept de restauration suivi d?une description des principaux éléments de travaux avec l?emphase sur les leçons apprises de l?exécution des travaux. La deuxième partie de la présentation est axée sur les résultats du programme de suivi en cours depuis la fin des travaux en 2001. Les éléments de suivi se rapportent à la baisse du niveau de la nappe phréatique à l?intérieur de la cellule, au tassement des résidus dans la cellule, aux mesures de température et d?oxygène à l?intérieur de la cellule et finalement à l?amélioration dans la qualité de l?eau de surface. ABSTRACT The reclamation of Poirier Mine, in Joutel, was carried out between 1998 and 2001. The main component of the works has been the reclamation of the tailings basin and tailings spill area which contained a total of 4,5 million tonnes of tailings and occupied some 74 hectares of ground surface. The mine tailings are highly acid-generating. The first part of the presentation will deal with a brief review of the reclamation plan followed by a short description of the main work components laying emphasis on experience gained during construction. The second part of the presentation will deal with the results obtained from the environmental monitoring program still in progress since the end of reclamation work in 2001. The aspects discussed include the drawdown of pore water inside the covered tailing pile, the settlement of mine waste material, the monitoring of moisture, temperature and oxygen underneath the liner and finally, the reduction of loadings in surface water.

Introduction Core drilling of the bituminous sands of northern Alberta has been carried on by the Mines and Geology Branch, Department of Mines and Resources, under the supervision of the Director, W. B. Timm. This was part of the Dominion Government's wartime investigations, which included an agreement with Abasand Oils, Limited, for the study of commercial possibilities of obtaining oil from the bituminous sands. The drilling programme, commenced in 1942 by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, was continued in 1943 and subsequently by Boyles Bros. under contract with the Mines and Geology Branch. Several areas have been investigated and one of these, the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, ' herein described, is of special importance in that it contains a sufficiently rich and large deposit of bituminous sands and bitumen beds to warrant consideration of commercial developments for the production of oil. The Steepbank Area, East Side of Athabaska River The Steepbank area, on the east side of Athabaska river in township 92, about twenty-two miles north of Fort McMurray, was selected for drilling in 1942 because previous investigations by Ells indicated it was one of considerable promise both from the standpoint of having reasonably rich bituminous sands under relatively light overburden and also having an excellent tailing disposal and plant site for large-scale operations in proximity to Athabaska river. The drilling done in 1942 and 1943 was largely exploratory, and, when it was found that the southerly part of township 92 had only low-grade material, closer drilling was done in 1944-45 in the richer, more northerly part.

Dr. K. A. Clark: No one will doubt the statement of fact that, during drilling operations through the bituminous sand beds in the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, the core-barrel was found to contain bitumen with minor amounts of sand instead of bituminous sand. But many will doubt the interpretation of this fact as meaning that beds of bitumen occur interstratified with the bituminous sand beds. They will prefer to hold faith in the laws of physics, which deny that sand will float on oil or that fluid under pressure will not flow away through a permeable medium, until it is proved that the appearance of the oil in the core-barrel was not due to circumstances surrounding the drilling of the bituminous sand beds. The implication of the interpretation that sand is floating on oil is clear and it is unacceptable. Bituminous sand is unconsolidated sand more' or less saturated with a viscous oil. It is as difficult to conceive of bituminous sand lying on top of a body of the viscous oil as it is to conceive of unconsolidated sand more or less saturated with water lying on top of a body of water. The only difference between the two concepts is that the oil is viscous whereas the water is fluid. Oil-soaked sand placed on viscous oil would, when released, sink through the oil slowly, whereas water-soaked sand would sink through the water quickly.

"Experiments were performed with plant feeds with a continuous 1,8 m3 cell at Pyhasalmi mine with Cu flotation feed in order to test the applicability of the bubble surface area flux as an indicator of the flotation rate constant. It was found that bubble surface area flux could not predict the rate constants of coarse Cu containing fractions. In the middle size fraction, the correlation coefficient in the rate coefficient estimation was higher but not statistically significant. Only the fine fraction showed a linear relationship with a moderate correlation coefficient.The bubble surface area flux was shown not to be a function of the impeller velocity above a threshold value. The flux was an almost linear function of the superficial gas rate enabling to use the superficial gas rate instead of flux if the operation of an existing cell is to be estimated.INTRODUCTIONBubble area flux seems to offer a simple way of modeling flotation. It relates the flotation rate constant with the bubble surface area flux by a simple linear equation. Due to this, there has been a considerable interest in using the bubble area flux for flotation computations. Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from mine wastes is one of the most environmental challenge currently facing the mining industry. AMD is the result of the natural oxidation of sulphides exposed to air and water. When mining wastes have the potential to produce AMD, these reactive wastes have to be managed to meet existing environmental regulations. The LTA site (property of Barrick Gold Corp.) contains sulphide tailings that have the potential to generate AMD. The closure option Barrick selected was to construct a multilayered cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE). The main objective of this CCBE is to prevent the production of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from the tailings stack covering an area of approximately 60 ha. Since its construction in 1996, the cover has been monitored to evaluate its performance. Two of the measured parameters are volumetric water content and matrix suction. This paper presents some of the main results from the monitoring program that started seven years ago. The results show that the cover is largely able to maintain a high degree of saturation (greater than 85%) in the moisture-retaining layer. The actual performance of the CCBE on the flat surface of the 60 ha site is even better than expected at the design stage. The area that requires more specific attention with the LTA cover is the influence of slopes that can reduce the performance of the CCBE during dry periods. However, these effects seems to be local and do not significantly affect the overall performance of the CCBE to mitigate the production of AMD at the LTA site.
