"The Cominco smeller in Trail, British Columbia, is a large integrated lead-zinc production facility. In the plant description, emphasis is given to the pyrometallurgical operations including zinc concentrate roasting, lead singer-blast furnace processing and silver refining. Production figures for the main metal products - zinc, lead, silver and gold - are provided.IntroductionIncorporated in 1906, Cominco Ltd. is an integrated natural resource company with principal activities in mining, smelting and refining, mineral exploration, fertilizer production and electrical power generation.Cominco is one of the world's largest producers of zinc and lead, accoW1ting for about 10070 of mine production in the western world. The company also produces and sells copper concentrate, copper sulphate, copper arsenate, sodium antirnonate, silver, gold, cadmium, bismuth, indium, and germanium dioxide and a range of fertilizers and sulphur products.Zinc OperationsRoastingThe roasters currently treat about 1400 t/d of zinc concentrates. Over half of the total concentrate treated originates from the Red Dog Mine in Alaska. During the summer, concentrate is shipped from Alaska to Vancouver where it is loaded into rail cars and hauled inland, transferred to trucks and delivered to Trail. The remainder of the roaster feed is made up of Sullivan concentrate and various custom concentrates. These arrive either by train or by truck.There are three roasters available for roasting the concentrate. The two major roasters are Lurgi fluid bed units. Each Lurgi roaster can process concentrate at about 1:7 tonnes per hour (tlb). A smaller Cominco suspension roaster with a capacity of 10 tlb is also used. The flowsheet for the high temperature section of the fluid bed circuit is shown in Figure 1.Concentrates fed to fluid bed roasting are conditioned with 7 1/min water to give 8% moisture in feed. Two slinger belts throw the mixture into the fluidized bed. The fluid bed roasters are 10.4 m in diameter with a bed depth of 1 m. Grate area is 84 m2• Normal operating conditions include bed temperatures of 930°C to 950°C, fluidizing air at 750 Nm3/min and a wind box pressure of 2000 mm H2O."

"The Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located at 4200 m elevation in the Chilean Andes. The deposit is a world-class supergene enriched porphyry with a mining reserve of 89 Mt of 1.3% copper. The supergene zone will produce 6.3 Mt of ore per year for more than 15 years to produce 75 000 t of cathode copper per year.This paper will review the project geology the computer model ling of the deposit, the mine planning process and the property production scheduling. With copper production .fixed by the onsite electrowinning capacity, the planning and scheduling aspects to optimize the project NPV will be discussed. Some of the logistics, equipment. personnel and process difficulties of operating a mine at 42()() m elevation will also be described. IntroductionProject DescriptionThe Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located in the northern part of the Chilean Andes. The project is based on the supergene enriched portion of a porphyry deposit which has a mining reserve of 89 million tonnes at 1.3070 copper. Below the enrichment blanket, the protore represents a further resource.All ore will be leached, the higher grade material will be crushed and stacked for thin layer heap leaching, and the lower grade and oxide material will be dump leached as run-of-mine material. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will be used to produce 75 000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. Power will be supplied by a 40 MW on-site diesel generating plant with the waste heat being used for process heating. The leaching operation will operate in excess of 15 years and may be followed by open pit mining and conventional ore concentration of the underlying primary sulphide mineralization.Because of the dry location water will be piped 37 km from a ground water source at the Salar de Michincha. Water requirements will be approximately 1.5 million m3/year. The operation will eventually employ approximately 550 people on a 7-day-on, 7-day-off rotation with two twelve-hour shifts per day with an on-site camp. Busing will be provided to the port city of Iquique."

"Mining research at CANMET is delivered by the Mining Research Laboratories Division (MRL), with facilities in Sydney, Nova Scotia; Bells Comers, Elliot Lake, and Sudbury, Ontario; and Val d'Or, Quebec. This paper gives an overview of the work of the Division as of early 1993. An addendum, at the end of this paper, describes the organizational changes that will take place in April 1994. IntroductionCANMET, the acronym for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, is the name by which the organization founded in 1907 as the federal Mines Branch is presently known. The name was changed in 1974, in order to give recognition to the importance of both minerals and energy technologies in the activities of the Branch. Further reorganizations have taken place since 1987. As a result of these, CANMET has assumed the status of a Sector (equivalent to the Geological Survey of Canada) and has been organized into four branches.The organization as a whole functions in an environment of semi-matrix management. Some of the ""line"" Divisions report to Directors-General for the appropriate branches while other, larger divisions, report directly to the Assistant Deputy Minister.The second dimension of the organizational matrix is composed of a number of ""staff' divisions which report to the DirectorGeneral for Policy and Planning. Each of these Divisions performs a function which is common to all of the ""line"" divisions. For example, the Research Projects Office is responsible for monitoring the range of research activities of CANMET and for recommending allocations of funds for both research contracts and operating budgets. The Library and Documentation Services Division is responsible for CANMET publications and information services. Likewise, the Engineering and Technical Services Division provides support through, among other services, the construction of specialized laboratory equipment."

Abstract - Intrusive features of cupriferous noritoids from the deeply eroded Proterozoic granite-gneiss terrane of the Okiep Copper District in South Africa illustrate the emplacement of basic magmas into a mid- to lower-crustal environment. The small, easterly trending intermediate to basic intrusions of the so-called Koperberg Suite display a wide variety of geometries, occurrence and emplacement modes, including dike-, sill- and plug-like bodies. Coeval granulite-facies metamorphism, partial melting and ductile deformation of country rock gneisses during intrusion of the basic magmas led to emplacement and dilation processes of the intrusions which differ significantly from those described for dikes and sills at shallow crustal levels. Regional tectonic stresses are largely negligible due to very low differential stress (?1 - ?3) during deformation and intrusion, which permits emplacement at high angles to the principal compressive stress and which follows favorably inclined structural anisotropies. Dilation of the basic intrusions is largely determined by compositional differences of host rocks and occurs by thermal erosion, i.e., assimilation of wall rock gneisses. Low length-to-width ratios of basic to ultrabasic dikes and predominantly diaper -like outlines of mesocratic bodies are indicative of low viscosity contrasts between the mafic magmas and high-grade metamorphic host-rock gneisses. Buoyancy-controlled ascent of the basic to intermediate intrusions is expressed by a broad compositional zoning of basic bodies with respect to the granite-gneiss stratigraphy. Various intrusion modes within the stratigraphic column of the granite-gneiss sequence reflect a lithological and structural stratification of the seemingly homogeneous granite-gneiss terrane.

"Laboratory and trial installations have been completed to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian underground mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been developed and tested, two of which are currently available to the mining industry. Their evalualtion consisted of lab testing in Canada and the United States, along with trial installations in several underground mines throughout Canada. The objective was to develop a cost competitive composite cable bolt equivalent in strength to that of a 16 mm (Ys in.) diameter steel cable bolt. In addition to achieving equal or superior load carrying characteristics in tension, the glass fibre cables generally experienced an increase in the rate of installation due to their lighter weight. Unlike conventional steel cables, composite cables may be installed within mines which utilize continuous excavation and which require cuttable support. A market analysis of cable bolt usage in Canada has been completed. Glass fibre cable bolts are an effective means of rock reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to conventional steel cable bolting. IntroductionCurrent cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to support the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used as pre-support in open stope and cut-and fill mining methods. They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, are generally less than 20 m (65.6 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage of cable bolts is that they are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils. This allows relatively long lengths (>20 m, [65.6 ft]) to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m)."

"Backfill practices at the Williams mine have evolved significantly since underground mining began in 1986. The use of conveyors as a means of transporting fill material to stopes has been discontinued in favour of load-haul-dump equipment. The method of adding binder to the fill product has been refined along with the placement technique. Slurry preparation has been fully automated and flyash is now included as a binding agent. Surface preparation of the fill product has evolved substantially with the quarry operation coming into full operation and the construction of pennanent crushing, screening, and storage facilities. Company personnel have replaced all contracted labour involved in backfill operations. Some changes have been made to achieve a higher standard of quality control while others were implemented as a matter of cost reduction. BackgroundThe Williams mine is one of three mines operating at the Hernlo gold deposit, located 40 km east of Marathon, Ontario, along the north shore of Lake Superior. Daily production at the mine is 6000 Ud yielding an annual gold production of approximately 500 000 oz. The orebody extends from surface to a depth of 1300 m dipping north at 70 degrees. The average orebody width is 25 m, but varies from 45 m on the eastern boundary to about 10 m at the western probable limit and at depth. Proven and probable reserves currently stand at 32 million tonnes grading 6 g/t.The Williams orebody has been divided into four separate mining zones: the A-zone, the West-of-Dyke zone, the B-zone, and the C-zone (Fig 1). Ore production originally was from the A-zone open pit operation while the A-zone and B-zone underground workings were being developed. The mining method employed underground is blasthole open stoping with delayed rockfill. Mining block dimensions are nominally 20 m along strike by 25 m high. Stope extraction is sequenced to achieve a relatively short pillar life and 100010 ore recovery. Pillars are extracted as soon as the adjacent primary stopes are two cycles ahead. Primary stopes are filled with consolidated rock fill after mining. This allows pillars to be blasted right against the consolidated fill, but also requires that the fill be self supporting to a height of 30 m.The Williams mine places approximately 1.4 million tonnes of rockfill and 50 000 tonnes of binding agents each year, with about three quarters of the fill placed being consolidated. The consolidated fill placed at the Williams mine contains Portland cement and flyash as binding agents."

"As part of LITHOPROBE's multidisciplinary earth science research program to understand the evolution of the North American continent, studies have been undertaken in a number of key areas in Canada. In the Trans-Hudson Orogen of Manitoba and Saskatchewan, LITHOPROBE results require re-evaluation of tectonic models related to its origin. In the Abitibi greenstone belt of Quebec and Ontario, results indicate a more complex evolution for the southern Superior province, one that links with the development of gold and massive sulphide deposits. As part of the program, the seismic reflection profiling method is being adapted for the mining industry. Three examples demonstrate the subsurface information that can be obtained. In Noranda, the base of the volcanic Blake River group is imaged and reflectivity is tied to geology through well logs; in Matagami, the zone of mineralization is shown to be downdropped along a majorfault; in Sudbury, a new structural model is developed, one that shows marked asymmetry at depth and indicates that some ore-bearing units on the margins of the igneous complex may be repeated at depth. IntroductionLITHOPROBE is Canada's national, collaborative earth science research project, established to develop a comprehensive understanding of how the North American continent has evolved. Ten transects, or study areas, were chosen to investigate pivotal geological features to their deep lithospheric roots. They span the country from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans and from the U.S. border to the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and geological time from four billion years ago to the present. A multidisciplinary approach, which is spearheaded by seismic reflection techniques, is essential to developing complete interpretations and outstanding scientific results. LITHOPROBE also has pioneered the use and demonstrated the value of using reflection technology to determine subsurface geology in mining camps.This paper provides an overview of the transects and their significance for the tectonic evolution of North America. Two specific examples demonstrate how we detennine present three-dimensional lithospheric structure and past geotectonic processes which formed it. The application of the reflection method to imaging complex structures in ""shallow"" crystalline rocks has been developed with funding and other support from the mining industry and provincial geological surveys. Sustaining funds, however, are derived from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and Geological Survey of Canada. Emphasis has been placed on developing deeper penetrating tools for exploration of deeply buried, but economically retrievable, mineral resources near existing mines, where an expensive infrastructure already is in place. Three examples, Rouyn-Noranda in western Quebec, Matagami in northwestern Quebec and Sudbury in northeastern Ontario, illustrate these developments."

"A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. The test was first designed for use on diamond drill core samples during the prefeasibility stage of new mining projects, to provide new information about the ore body at reasonable cost. It is a new tool and does not replace existing pilot plant test requirements.The test will also be useful for throughput prediction in existing SAG plants by assisting in short and long term mine planning, where forecasting of metal grades and milled tonnage is used to control mine profitability. "La Compagnie Minière Québec Cartier at Port Cartier. Quebec, utilizes six parallel wet grinding open circuit ball mills to grind iron ore concentrate for the pellet making process. In an attempt to improve grinding efficiency, a mix of 605 25 mm (1 in.) and 405 38 mm (1 ½ in.) grinding balls was charged to mill D while the opposite mix was used in all the other mills. Because media costs were higher for mill D, it was necessary to find out if the smaller balls provided a net economic benefit. Therefore, a test program was undertaken to determine the relative efficiency of the charge in mill D compared to the other grinding mills. Mill F was chosen for comparative efficiency measurements.The first problem was to choose a suitable definition of grinding efficiency. In management's view, previous attempts to quantify milling performance using population balance modelling were ineffective because they were unable to relate breakage rate functions to grinding circuit economical in any meaningful way. Work index analysis was also not favoured because of a number of complicating effects, including the fineness of the feed and product streams and open circuit grinding.It was decided to adopt a recent innovative approach which had been successfully applied to closed-circuit ball milling. For ""functional performance analysis of ball milling"" (McIvor et al., 1990; McIvor et al., 1991), a size criterion is first chosen to define ""fines·' and ~'coarse particles"". In this case 45 microns (325 mesh) was chosen to distinguish fines from coarse material. The relative grinding efficiency of each ball mill environment would then be ~e cumulative grinding (disappearance) rate of coarse (plus 45 nucrons) material per kilowatt hour of energy applied to the coarse material in the mill, divided by the grindability (measured in the laboratory) of the coarse material in the mill feed.Because the disappearance rate of coarse particles is also the production rate of fines, the following equation can be written for the efficiency of the mill environment, Effe, as defined above:"

"Starting this year, corporations that conduct business in Ontario face a new tax a corporate minimum tax. This tax is in addition to the myriad of other taxes that make up a corporation's total tax burden including federal and provincial capital 1oXJ!S, payroll tax and sales taxes. Mining companies with gross revenues in excess of $10 million or total assets exceeding $5 million may be liable for this new tax. IntroductionOn December 8, 1993, the Ontario government introduced legislation to implement the corporate minimum tax (CMT promised in its May, 1993 budget. There are very few differences between the final legislation and the budget proposals.The CMT is effective for taxation years commencing after 1993. Subject to certain specific exemptions (detailed below), the tax applies to all corporations liable for Ontario Corporate Income Tax that have either gross revenues in excess of $10 million or total assets in excess of $5 million. These measurements apply to the aggregate gross revenues and total assets for all corporations in an associated group and a corporate partner's share of partnership assets and revenues must be included in the determination.In essence, the CMT is an income tax that is based on financial statement profit instead of an income amount that is determined separately under a statute. Accordingly mining companies (including so called ""junior"" exploration companies), which traditionally sheltered their taxable income by claiming generous exploration and development deductions, could find that they have a CMT liability."

Abstract -The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterozoic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Formations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Transvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase deformation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE +Au concentrations.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). "In times when mines are emphasizing cost reductions, a properly rebuilt shall conveyance can be more cost-effective than building a new unit. Awareness of the safety aspects of conveyance design along with proper maintenance playa large part in reducing operating costs. A knowledgeable operator can maintain a high level of safety and significantly lengthen the service life of a conveyance. Such an operator is also in a better position to determine when a major overhaul is necessary.After the decision has been made to rebuild, operators must decide who will do the overhaul. Whether the work is to be done in-house or contracted out, the goal is to achieve a conveyance recertified to ""as new"" condition. By dealing with conveyance rebuilds as an engineered product, operators can be certain they are getting a top quality product for their money.This paper deals with the engineering aspects of conveyance rebuilds. Actual examples of typical problems are discussed and corrective action outlined. Design considerations such as proper material selection, component fatigue due to cyclic loading, effects of stress concentrations and corrosion are all part of the initial design considerations that must carryover into the rebuild process. All too often equipment overhauls are done by people who are not experienced in conveyance design.As a manufacturer of mining equipment, Wabi has gained expertise over the past 70 years. "Inco's Automated Haulage Truck System (AHT) is a revolutionary automatic guided vehicle that performs all load, haul and dump operations without human intervention. The high level of sophistication and the short period it has been in operation has only allowed a select few Inco personnel to become familiar with the ART operation and maintenance. As an aid to operations an expert system using the knowledge gained from the experienced specialists was implemented in the field.The AHT operating and maintenance assistance expert system will reason through the information given, arrive at conclusions and give advice to operations, technical and management personnel. It will provide comprehensive real-time troubleshooting assistance for the hydraulic, electrical and mechanical subsystems of the ART. The ART expert system has many benefits to Inco which include increased skill levels of ART operations and maintenance personnel, reduction in ART downtime, standardization of troubleshooting procedures and reduction in ART operating and maintenance costs. In the future, the expert system application will be linked to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), maintenance and statistical software to display current and historical trends of variables from a centralized historical database. As well, a wide variety of features will be integrated into the system including AutoCad drawings, graphics, photographs, voice and video capabilities."

Abstract -At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-Sn-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated mineralization. ln a zone doser to the host rock­ granite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted subangular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magrnatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagrnatic, low­ temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magmatic­ hydrothermal and hydromagmatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

"Roast-reduction smelting (RRS) of nickel concentrate, combined with flash smelting of copper concentrate, was one of the process options that Inco considered as a means of meeting its 1994 sulphur dioxide abatement target at its Copper Cliff operations. RRS involves deep roasting the nickel concentrate in fluid bed roasters. The roaster off-gas is treated in a sulphuric acid plant, and the low sulphur calcine is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur-deficient matte. The latter material is converted to Bessemer matte in Peirce-Smith converters, with minimal evolution of sulphur dioxide, and the converter slag is reverted to the electric furnace. Excellent nickel and cobalt recoveries (Ire obtained. This paper discusses the development of RRS, including extensive commercial scale testing at Inco's Thompson Smelter, and its key operating parameters. IntroductionReduction of sulphur dioxide emissions has been a long-standing endeavour at Inco. At the company's Ontario Division, as shown in Figure 1, sulphur dioxide emissions were reduced from about 2 million to 685 000 tonnes per year over the period 1970-1985. Most of this impressive improvement was the result of a sustained research effort which led to increased rejection of pyrrhotite from the ore during milling while maintaining an acceptable nickel recovery. Between 1970 and 1985, the combined grade of the separate nickel and copper concentrates feeding the Copper Cliff Smelter increased from about 10070 to about 'lIJ0J0 Cu +Ni and the combined S/(CU +Ni) ratio decreased from about 2.8 to 1.65."

Placer mineral deposits may exist in the nearshore and shelf regions off western Canada. These deposits could contain gold, ilmenite or zircon as well as sand and gravel aggregate. Two deposit types typical of the British Columbia offshore are: (l) modem and relict gold/titanium beach deposits; and (2) reworked relict titaniferous shelf deposits. The preservation of drowned beach heavy mineral concentrations resulted from a rapid relative sea level rise across the shallow shelves approximately 10 500 years ago, particularly off the Queen Charlotte Islands. This same transgression submerged an outwash fluvial system that had been exposed for at least 3200 years, draining areas of known gold placers.

"General purpose uniprocessor systems used in control applications, however fast they may be, at a certain stage attain saturation, forcing the user or designer to consider other avenues for solving the problem. This paper gives a broad overview of multiprocessing with special reference to transputers. Virtually all aspects, from parallel systems real-time control to artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems, have been highlighted. The application of transpurters in unilayer and multilayer control are discussed in detail, with specific attention to sensor integration. Two case studies describe at length the utilization of transputers. IntroductionIn conformance with the high level taxonomy of parallel computer architectures as given by Ralph Duncan(l) (an improvement to Flynn's classification, which maintains the essential elements of useful taxonomy based on instructions and data streams), the MlMD architectures are categorized into two groups: (I) shared memory, and (2) distributed memory type. While the shared memory multiprocessors are more popular than the message-passing multiprocessors because they can be programmed in a conventional sequential fashion, their aspect of the architecture creates a perfonnance bottleneck. In contrast, message-passing multiprocessors (MPM) suffer from no such limitation and can attain linear speed increases that are directly proportional to the number of processors put into use. The MPM implementation also has its own advantages and disadvantages. Because the performance of the system is heavily dependent on it, the interconnection strategy in a distributed memory MIMD machine is of paramount importance. The transputer(2.J), a multiprocessor node of the distributed memory type, is becoming very popular. The advantages offered by the transputer make its application in the mining and processing industries very promising."

"Seismic tomography is a process for obtaining images or maps of seismic velocity or other seismic properties of a rock mass. Seismic velocity images reveal variation in elastic moduli which, in tum, are related to several properties required in the geological or geomechanical assessment of a rock mass. Seismic velocity is sensitive to lithology, discontinuities, and in situ stress. Spatial or temporal variation of these properties may be indirectly assessed. Tomographic measurements are sensitive to volumes of ground, rather than determinations at points, or along lines or surfaces, as in conventional geological or geomechanical measurements or mappings.Tomography surveys are complementary to conventional measurements as they have the capability to interrogate a substantially larger volume of ground. They are thus useful in discerning trends or patterns in regions between or surrounding conventional ""point"" measurements of lithology, rock quality, stress, or other parameters of interest. Seismic velocity images give broad indications of trends in velocity; their spatial resolution of ground properties is typically on the order of five to ten per cent of the nominal survey dimension.Research in seismic tomography has been carried out for several years, and the capabilities and limitations of the technique in mining environments are beginning to be understood. This report reviews the present capabilities of seismic tomography surveys in mining, emphasizing rock mechanics applications. Six case studies are used as examples to demonstrate the capabilities of the method in assessing lithological variation, density and orientation of discontinuities, and the effects of stress."

"A growing environmental awareness hos prompted the mineral industry to seek innovations in waste management and technology. It is estimated that over 500 million metric tonnes of solid waste each year are rejected by the Canadian mineral industry. This waste hos to be disposed of in the most environmentally and economically acceptable manner.An extensive study has been conducted to estimate the cost of implementing total tailings fill from a waste disposal point-of-view as an alternative to large-scale surface disposal of tailings. The cost of waste disposal at the surface (tailings pond), and underground (total tailings fill) for three Canadian mines which have taken part in Quebec Mine Survey conducted in 1992 are analyzed. Surface disposal is the most economical and common method of mine waste disposal in Canada. Total tailings backfill as a method of waste disposal is technically feasible but cannot be regarded as more economic than surface disposal in all . It is important to remember that while surface disposal costs are rising, due to tighter legislation and more environmental pressure on governments; the costs of preparing and placing total tailings backfill is still falling as the technology improves."
