The jet piercing process, developed by Union Carbide Canada Ltd., is well established in blasthole production in open-pit mining. By this process, holes can be drilled, shaped and chambered for blasting. In suitable ore or rock formations, a considerable cost reduction can be achieved. This paper reviews the equipment used, relates how cost savings may be accomplished, and concludes with a mention of the most recent developments in this field. JET piercing and chambering, a process for blasthole production in open-pit mining, leads, in many instances, to improved drilling and blasting techniques and costs. It is a method of working rock with a supersonic flame and, to be most effective, depends upon a characteristic of the rock called spallability. Spalling, in this case, is the breaking away of surface particles from the rock body due to stresses caused by the thermal shock of the jet flame. Various rock properties contribute to this action, but, in general, the harder the rock the greater the spallability and the more effective and economical is the jet process. The jet process has the capability to drill, ream, shape and chamber holes for blasting.

When we apply the Au nanoparticle superlattices to the future nanooptical and nanoelectronic devices, the control of not only the particle size but also the interparticle spacing and symmetry of superlattice are the essential problems to be overcome. First, we developed a novel synthetic procedure to precisely control the particle size of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticles in the range from 1.5 to 9.7 nm by the heat-treatment of the small Au nanoparticles in the solid state. Absorption and nonlinear optical properties of alkanethiol-protected Au nanoparticle superlattices were then elucidated. On the other hand, the hexagonal close-packed (hcp) 2D superlattices of small Au nanoparticles with the interparticle spacings from 1.9 to 3.6 nm were successfully prepared by using newly-synthesized ligand for single electron tunneling devices. Finally, various symmetric superlattices, such as chain (2-fold), quasi-honeycomb (3-fold), square (4-fold), etc., of Au nanoparticles could be produced by making use of interligand interactions or some templates.

With several “green” applications on the horizon, bismuth has become an even more important minor metal in the smelting and refining of lead. Smelters with a complex sulphide feed invariably deal with bismuth. Its behavior during the smelting of lead in conventional sinter-blast furnace operation is discussed. Because it readily deports to the lead phase during the refining of lead, its separation from refined lead remained unsatisfactory in early lead production. When commercial requirements of bismuth in lead became more stringent early this century, the procedure where by calcium and magnesium is used todebismuthise lead was developed. The present conduct of this 1936 process, the Kroll-Betterton process, is discussed with emphasis on operational improvements.

"A world class rare metals ore deposit in Africa belongs to a massive granite type poly-metallic pyrochlore-niobium resource. Successful project development in realizing the resource is vital to Africa’s economy and pyrochlore processing technology.The ore properties are quite complex due to the presence of varieties of valuable minerals, fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals and the relative abundance of easy-floatable minerals. The separation of pyrochlore from zircon, calcite and mica is generally considered difficult. Whilst studies have previously been conducted by several independent institutions overseas, no satisfactory process has yet been developed to date for the ore deposit—possibly due to the process designed being too complex; high cost of regents; lower performance.Based on process mineralogy study and extensive testwork, the authors have in recent years developed a new technology—“De-slime—Iron-rejection—Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation—Pyrochlore flotation”. The flow-sheet is characterized by ?1prior removal of slimes and iron minerals; ?2 Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation; and ?3Pyrochlore flotation applying new type of chelating collector GYX3 developed by GZRINM in conjunction with selected regulators and depressants.The process involved in the new technology is simple to implement and facilitates stable operation; the flotation reagent regime is easily adaptable; the cost of main reagent is lower largely because it is easy to manufacture and is environmental friendly. Laboratory test results demonstrated that, for raw ore assaying 0.35% Nb2O5, 0.03% Ta2O5 and 0.45% ZrO2, pyrochlore concentrate grade of >35% Nb2O5 could be obtained with >74% recovery. Meanwhile, the Ta2O5 content in pyrochlore concentrate could be recycled, and ZrO2 recovery >50% could be achieved in zircon concentrate assaying ZrO2>63%—significantly improving the technical-economic indicator. These results were verified in pilot trials of 1.44t/d throughput. The paper presents the new technology in whole, summarizes the key factors affecting its performance and discusses in simple terms the mechanism of separation."

McArthur River Operation is the world?s largest high grade uranium deposit and is located in Northern Saskatchewan. McArthur River came into production in December 1999 with a number of innovative technologies to allow for mining of a high grade uranium deposit in challenging geotechnical and hydrological conditions. The raisebore mining method has been supplemented by the continued development of a boxhole mining technique to allow for mining of mineralization that cannot be accessed with a drill chamber from above. An innovative freeze wall re-design ? a cathedral freeze wall, was implemented in 2009 to allow for top access of a new orebody in the unconformity area of the Athabasca Sandstone. This paper highlights some of the ongoing improvements to the mining method and the innovative risk mitigation applied to manage the extraction of this challenging orebody.

In the past few years there has been considerable controversy on the most suitable material to be used in ventilation doors which will have to serve also as fire doors. For this reason it was thought useful at Mclntyre to find out to what extent our zinc chloride treated spruce doors were fire resistant and what protection we could expect in case of an underground fire. The doors to be tested were constructed of the same material as that used in our regular ventilation doors underground, namely, 2-inch tongue-and-groove well seasoned spuce. It is to be noted, however, that whereas the dimensions of the ventilation doors are 5 ft. by 6 ft., those of the test doors were only 14 in. by 17½ in. The treated doors were made up from lumber that l1ad been treated with chromated zinc chloride, as described in Mr. Keeley's paper. Two kinds of tests were carried out: a heat test and a flame test. An electric muffle furnace for assaying, equipped with a pyrometer, was used for the beat test, the furnace door being replaced by the wooden door to be tested. In the flame test, the door to be tested formed one end of a rectangular steel box in which was placed a large blow-torch. Air was admitted at the rear of the box. A pyrometer recorded the temperature at the inside surface of the door where flame impinged. The results of the tests are presented in the accompanying table, in which the word 'failed' is to be interpreted as meaning that the door had been damaged to the extent that smoke, but not necessarily flame, issued from its outside surface.

Rock samples were taken, away from zones of mineralization , from seven sections of five rhyolitic zones as define d by Spence (l967) in the Noranda area. The purpose of the investigation was to test whether there were intrinsic differences between the zones which would differentiate between non-productive zones and productive zones. For the elements sought (major elements, Cu , Pb , Zn and S) , no clear chemical difference between the zones was found. Thus, identification of a favour able zone from the over -all composition of the zone does not appear promising. Within sampled sections, there is no clear gradual compositional change up through the sections. A capping of highly siliceous massive rhyolite is present in five of the sections sampled. A layer of relatively basic material occurs near the base of individual units. The third (mine zone) and later zones contain abundant pyroclastic material, where as the non-productive zones do not.

THE H.B. MINE and concentrator are located in the Nelson Mining Division of British Columbia, on the north side of the Sheep Creek valley about seven miles southeast of the town of Salmo. It is an operation of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited (Cominco), which has its metallurgical plants at Trail, about 25 miles west. The property was originally staked about 1907 by Horton and Benson, whose names are commemorated in the designation "H. B." Up until 1927, a considerable amount of development work was done in the upper levels by various companies. Cominco purchased the ?property in 1927 and carried out intermittent work until 1946. Following this, an extensive surface diamond drilling programme and a subsequent underground exploration were undertaken. Sufficient ore was outlined 'to warrant the construction of a 1,000: ton concentrator. This was started in April, 1952, and completed by the spring of 1953. However, because of adverse base metal market conditions, operation was deferred until May, 1955.

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes. The present paper focuses the application of CFD techniques to investigate the Top-Submerged- Lance (TSL) gas injection in liquid metal. Previous works of the authors have shown that up- and down- scaling procedures based on the modified Froude number have some shortcomings, as this approach does not take into account the interfacial and viscous forces. Indeed, surface tension and dynamic viscosity of the smelting slags (σ = 0.4-0.5 N/m, μ = 0.2 Pa·s) are higher than the operating fluids that have been used in literature (water, paraffin oil) to study TSL injection in down-scaled furnaces. In order to get closer to real systems, the authors study the TSL injection of Argon in a liquid metal. An experimental campaign was carried out in the X-ray lab at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), where the eutectic alloy GaInSn was used as liquid phase. The alloy is liquid at room temperature, and X-Ray imaging is used to picture the multiphase flow in a quasi-2D vessel. The aim of the present work is to demonstrate the applicability of CFD techniques to model multiphase flows involving liquid metals, and validate the model using the data produced at HZDR. The commercial software ANSYS Fluent® was used together with the Volume of Fluid model to directly resolve the gas-liquid interphase. Some features of the flow, such as the void fraction distribution and bubble detachment frequency are tracked with CFD and compared to the experimental data. INTRODUCTION In the last thirty years the TSL smelting technology has increasingly been used for industrial non- ferrous smelting processes and is now one of the significant pyrometallurgical processes. Developed in the early 1970’s at CSIRO, the furnace is nowadays commercialized in different market sectors, including copper and lead smelting, zinc fuming, waste treatment and slag recovery (Floyd, 2005). Despite the wide application of these reactors in the pyrometallurgical market, some aspects of the process are still not fully clarified, since in-situ measurements and optical accesses are prohibitive because of the high temperatures and aggressive conditions. Phenomena such as the bubbling regime, the slag solidification and the submerged combustion still need a deeper scientific investigation to obtain a better understanding of the process.

Cumberland Resources Ltd. is currently planning to develop the Meadowbank Gold Project located some 70 km north of Baker Lake, Nunavut in the eastern Canadian Arctic region. The Meadowbank Gold Project currently consists of up to 6 main gold bearing deposits within relatively close proximity to one another which are planned to be mined primarily as a truck-and-shovel open pit operation and using conventional gold milling and extraction. The mining plan indicates that approximately 20 million tonnes of ore will be mined over a mine life of 8 to 10 years. The operation will generate approximately 160 million tonnes of mine waste rock and about 20 million tonnes of tailings. The site is located in an area of continuous permafrost with mean annual average air temperature of -11 °C and average annual precipitation in the range of 100 to 200 mm. Lakes cover a large portion of the site, including some of the ore deposits. The location of the site, and the physical environment, pose challenges to development. This paper presents some of the designs considered to effectively manage and utilize the waste products of mining at the project.

Over the years, efficient on-line monitoring of performance and status of an electrolytic copper refining process has been challenging due to the need for complex electrical measurement systems and the management of the enormous volume of data. Recent innovative developments by Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation and Outokumpu Technology in wireless cell voltage and individual cell temperature sensing opens new possibilities to improve and modernize tank house management. This paper describes the powerful Outokumpu CellSenseTM refinery monitoring system for efficient interpretation of data produced by wireless CellSensorTM system with traditional refinery measurements. Examples from commercial tank house installations demonstrate the benefits of the system to improved process control and operation. The Outokumpu CellSenseTM monitoring system is simple to operate and accessible to all the plant operation teams.

"Bricks made from local Paleozoic shales, and floor and wall tiles made from imported clays, both established record production volumes in 1985 and are the strongest segments of Ontario 's clay products industries. However, renewed interest in traditional materials also supports a good market for clay flower pots and flu e liners, and innovative processing studies are showing promise for possible new production of clay roofing tiles. This paper reviews the highlights of a comprehensive study of Ontario's clay products industries, completed in 1986. IntroductionFor some years now, Ontario' s clay products industries have been unspectacular in their attempt to cope with the recent recession and the impact of alternative materials. But a strong demand for bricks in recent years has done much to dispel the gloom.Bricks, drainage tiles, sewer pipes, flue liners, structural and partition tiles, and flower pots have been commonly referred to as ""heavy"" clay products, and they have been based largely on local clays and shales. To this list might be added expanded aggregate and mineral wool. Clay refractories, sanitary ware, electrical porcelain , art pottery, and floor and wall tiles are not considered heavy clay products, and are commonly made from a variety of ceramic materials, many of which are imported.Production facilities for heavy clay products often began in Ontario as small family enterprises, using whatever clay was available locally to supply the local market with building bricks and other clay products needed for construction. "The release of vanadium, iron, nickel and titanium from the cokes produced in the upgrading of Alberta oil sands bitumen has been assessed for simple chemical leaching processes. Flexicoker coke (Exxon Engineering and Research) has been found to be quite amenable to the recovery of vanadium as well as nickel, iron and some titanium by these techniques, whereas fluid coker coke (Syncrude) and delayed coker coke (Great Canadian Oil Sands) are relatively intractable under the mild conditions employed. The factors affecting the extent of vanadium release are discussed in terms of the surface area accessible, the wettability of the material, and the chemical and physical composition of the coke particles in each case.A novel biologically assisted heap leaching procedure for f1exicoker coke is also described, based on the growth of the chemolithotrophic bacteria, Thiobacillus thiooxidans A TCC 8085, on elemental sulphur added to the coke."

La découverte de nouveaux gisements métallifères constitue le point de départ du développement de l'industrie minérale. Or, au cours de ces dernières années, le nombre de ces découvertes a fortement diminué dans les territoires classiquement explorés, entraînant une recrudescence de l?exploration dans les terrains géologiques de grade métamorphique élevé (e.g., Province de Grenville, Grand Nord du Québec). Ces derniers ont été traditionnellement considérés comme stériles à cause (i) de la monotonie apparente des gneiss qui les composent, (ii) de la difficulté d?identifier leurs protolites, (iii) des changements importants dans l?apparence des gîtes recherchés reliés au fort degré de déformation et de métamorphisme et (iv) des théories qui prônent un lessivage important des cations et des métaux d?intérêt économique par les processus de déshydratation des roches lors du métamorphisme régional (Weaver et Tarney, 1985; Vokes, 2000). Cependant, l?avancée des connaissances dans la compréhension des gîtes métallifères et de leurs terrains hôtes gneissiques intensément métamorphisés, montre que les systèmes géochimiques des roches altérées demeurent robustes (p. ex. ; Trägårdh, 1991; Craig et Vokes, 1993; Geringer et al., 1994; Schandl et al., 1995; Zaleski et Peterson, 1995; Vokes, 2000; Blein et al., 2003, sous presse). Bien sûr, les sulfures peuvent être localement remobilisés et même fondre, mais cette remobilisation n?implique pas forcément la disparition du gîte hôte (Williams, 1990) et peut s?avérer, bien au contraire, bénéfique pour la rentabilité d?un gîte en augmentant sa teneur en minerais (Marshall et al., 2000). Jusqu?à présent, dans les terrains métamorphiques, les contextes sédimentaires et plutoniques ont été reconnus et respectivement explorés pour les gîtes de type SEDEX et les gîtes magmatiques de Ni-Cu. L?étude de gîtes de métaux de base et précieux intensément métamorphisés (faciès des granulites) et leur comparaison avec des gîtes équivalents peu on non métamorphisés a permis d?établir, au cours des dernières décennies, des outils pour l?exploration des terrains de haut-grade métamorphique (Vokes, 1991, 2000; Slack et al., 1993; Spry et al., 2000). Ces outils sont basés sur la reconnaissance de roches diagnostiques d?une circulation ou d?une exhalation de fluides hydrothermaux telles que les méta-exhalites (formation de fer, coticules, tourmalinites, roches riches en quartz-gahnite, en apatite, en barite ou en staurolite zincifère) (Spry, 2000; Spry et al., 2000). Ils sont utilisés constamment dans les ceintures supracrustales riches en roches métasédimentaires.

This paper describes the results of testwork for the treatment of Ambatovy laterite ore by a pressure acid leach process, with recovery of the soluble nickel and cobalt values as mixed sulphide intermediate by precipitation with hydrogen sulphide, and subsequent refining of the mixed sulphide to nickel and cobalt metals. These process development studies were carried out primarily in 2004, as part of a bankable feasibility study for the Ambatovy Nickel Project. The Ambatovy orebody is located in Madagascar. The mini pilot plant testwork was carried out in the Dynatec metallurgical laboratory in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The results of the testwork were very encouraging, including nickel and cobalt extractions in the range of 95.5% to 97.0%, and 94.0% to 97.0%, respectively, in the ore leach step with sulphuric acid. High recoveries of nickel and cobalt were achieved throughout the remaining process steps, yielding separate nickel and cobalt metal powders with better than acceptable purity.

Several inorganic reagents and organic polymers were tested as depressants in the single mineral flotation of ultrafine iron oxide and hydroxylapatite with Dowfroth 250 as a frother. It was observed that the inorganic reagents and the low molecular weight polymers generally caused dispersion of the ultrafine particles, and consequently their recovery into froth products more or less equaled the recovery of water. On the other hand, the high molecular weight polymers caused different degrees of flocculation of the ultrafine particles, and their recoveries were much lower than the recovery of water. These observations pointed to a need to re-define flotation depressants in fine particle flotation. The traditional definition of a flotation depressant, i.e., to make particle surfaces hydrophilic by forming a hydrophilic film and/or by removing collector and activator coatings, is sufficient for relatively coarse particles. However, to prevent fine and ultrafine particles from floating, a successful depressant should not only make the particles hydrophilic, but also enlarge the particle sizes so that they do not enter the froth product by mechanical entrainment. Polymeric depressants are ideal for these purposes. The different schemes to use polymeric depressants in the selective flotation of fine and ultrafine particles were discussed These schemes involve the integration of the polymeric depressants into other size enlargement processes such as shear flocculation, oil agglomeration, etc., for hydrophobic particles.

Malagash received its name from the Indians many years ago on acco.unt of its turbid (milky) waters, although,' the red men did not appreciate the significance of this turbidity, and were, of course, entirely ignorant of the crystal beds of pure salt that lay beneath their feet. The salt lake of the Mississippian, or Lower Carboniferous period, in which these beds occur, was apparently a large one, for there is evidence of its existence at intervals all the way from Sydney, Cape Breton, to St. John, New Brunswick, 300 miles as the crow flies, and there is no knowing what its other dimensions may have been, as much of this horizon is now buried on the one side beneath the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and on the other underneath the Atlantic ocean. About midway of the area and underlying the counties of Colchester and Cumberland, there occurs a synclinal basin of which the Malagash salt outcrop forms only a small portion of its northern limit. This basin has been described very fully by A. C. Hayes. (1) The operations carried on at Malagash since Hayes wrote his report have brought to light very little in the way of new geological data, except to confirm his pre-dictions as to the probable faulting of the salt strata, and the effect which these faults would have on mining operations.

The extraction of nickel from Serbian and Western Australian lateritic ore by sulphuric pressure acid leaching (PAL) has been studied. The following parameters were tested: stirring rate, acid to ore ratio, reaction time, pressure and temperature. These studies were performed with ore samples from the Rudjinci, Serbia and Silcrete, Australia, both belonging to the laterite-silicate group of deposits. An increase of the reaction temperature and the stirring speed at a fixed acid/ore ratio showed a positive influence on nickel extraction. The decrease of the oxidation potential with time correlated with the increase in Fe(II) in solution and nickel extraction as the reaction went to completion for both ores. The target values of 95 % Ni extraction and 60 % Co extraction were attained in 5 min at 250°C for the Serbian silicate ore, at an agitation rate of 1500 rpm, 10 % solids, and acid/ore ratio of 0.40. Under similar conditions only 60 % Ni, but 69 % Co could be extracted from the Australian Silcrcte ore due to different mineralogy. The nickel extraction was shown follow a diffusion-controlled reaction model.
