Safety management is an important mortal and business function in construction. Contractors have traditionally tracked and reported lagging indicators, e.g. fatalities and lost-time accident rates, to measure their safety performance and stay in compliance with relevant regulations. Over the last several decades, contractors became more proactive in their approach to safety and developed programs that track leading indicators, e.g. safety audits and safety climate. In particular, safety climate measures workers? perception of safety management and its effectiveness in the workplace. Past literatures indicated that, while some industrial construction contractors ignore safety climate measures, others are limited by a lack of a formal means to measure safety climate. In this study, a survey approach is used to measure an industrial construction contractor?s safety climate through three key areas: management commitment, job control, and general safety climate. As a pilot study, a total of 214 individuals at a fabrication facility participated in the survey to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed survey approach. This survey study also confirms that job control and management commitment have a positive correlation and that worker demographics have an effect on respondents? perceptions of management commitment.

High energy consumption during grinding and poor efficiency associated with the beneficiation of fine minerals are two important problems facing the mineral industry . A particular shovel regulator system combining these components is discussed in detail and some of the advantages and disadvantages of the system are given.INTRODUCTIONIN 1959, STATIC CONTROL was for the first time successfully applied, installed and operated on a mining machine in North America. Since that time, a great deal has been learned about this control by the people maintaining these machines as well as by the de-signers.In 1961, the first SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) or thyristor control system was installed on an excavator. This control differed from the earlier static control in that thyristor excitors supplied the generator fields directly. The development of thyristors of a sufficient rating to supply amounts of phase-controlled power to the generator fields eliminated the bulky Mag. Amp. -Rectifier combination previously used."

"For the Kazchrome DC Ferrochrome plant, SMS-group specifically designed an electrode column that would minimize downtime. Special features include the possibility for on load electrode jointing, on load slipping, and back-slipping. Electrode consumption is strongly related to furnace load and impedance, and is very low at high loads, which makes the graphite electrode an alternative to consider even in AC applications. The electrode could also be applied in other DC applications, as for example TiO2 slag, the novel Conroast process, or (twin) DC FeNi furnaces, and could possibly be installed during bigger shut downs. This paper will describe some of the design considerations and operational performance data on this novel column in the FeCr industry that could also be of interest for the FeNi or PGM industry if these would continue to develop towards DC technology.INTRODUCTION Every DC furnace has a cathode and an anode. The anode applied is commonly known as the Concast design, though the original design was by ABB who handed it over to Concast, subsidiary of the SMS-group. Some well-known DC furnaces outside the steel industry where the Concast bottom has been installed are listed in Table 1 as well as a few other key design features.Sidewall cooling and some other data have been left out for reasons of space, and being a lesser relevant design feature to this paper. HES stands for Hollow Electrode System, in which feed is charged through an electrode. Table 1 is built up chronologically according to first start-up date. "Heap leaching of gold ores in permafrost conditions is feasible provided certain criteria are met. These criteria include relatively short heap leach residence time and the availability of waste heat.This paper describes the conceptual design of such a system for a mining operation in the North West Territories of Canada. The design includes the concept of continuous countercurrent leaching in enclosed ore heaps.Indicative capital and operating costs are given.INTRODUCTIONIn April 1984, Acres Davy McKee Engineering Inc. (ADM Eng.) in association with Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), was invited to carry out a preliminary design, cost estimate and financial analysis to assess the viability of gold heap leaching in a permafrost region in North West Territories, Canada.An orebody was being explored which could, by nature of its mineralogy, be upgraded substantially by crushing and screening in the size range of 1/4 in. to 3/4 in. It was proposed to process the screen undersize through an existing gold mill on site and to treat the oversize material in a heap leach facility to be constructed adjacent to the existing mill.Despite the formidable challenges imposed by isolation, permafrost and harsh winter conditions, the heap leach project was considered worthy of examination because of the relatively high grade of the heap leach material (> 0.1 oz/ton), very short leach times (in the range of 1 to 4 days) and the availability of substantial quantities of waste heat from the diesel generating station on site.Design challenges included the necessity to maintain the permafrost in frozen condition, to prevent freezing of ore and leach solution, to limit size of construction materials to that which could be carried in a Hercules freight plane and to contain water usage at an absolute minimum level."

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. This paper describes a system that manages and assigns vehicles in real-time in an underground mine. Each dispatching decision takes into account the traffic on the road segments of the mine network, whether bi-directional or unidirectional, and ensures that each LHD (Load-Haul-Dump Vehicle) arrives in the right orientation at loading and dumping points. Such systems can be used for two main purposes: 1) as a strategic planning tool and 2) as a real-time managing and optimising system for operations. Using a simulator in conjunction with the fleet management system, it is possible to accurately estimate the impact on productivity of decisions such as the development of waiting areas (bays, sidings), or the addition (elimination) of vehicles to the fleet in operation. Moreover, when used in for real-time dispatching, routing and scheduling of vehicles, the system can optimise production with respect to various assignment criteria such as minimising the cycle time or minimising the deviation from an optimal production plan. Dispatching, routing, and scheduling are handled simultaneously, taking into account the mine status, operational constraints, and all available information.

"The development of two large, high-grade uranium projects has been proposed for northern Saskatchewan. The projects are now under review by a joint federal/provincial panel. The McArthur River project is owned by the McArthur River joint venture (Cameco Corporation 53.991 %, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 29.775%, Cogema Resources Inc. 16.234%) and operated by Cameco. Cameco proposes to mill the McArthur River ore at the existing Key Lake mill. The Cigar Lake project is owned by the Cigar Lake joint venture (Cameco Corporation 48.75%, Cogema Resources Inc. 36.375%, Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Ltd. 12.875%, Korea Electric Power Corporation 2.000%). The Cigar Lake joint venture proposes that Cameco operate the Cigar Lake mine for the owners, and that Cogema mill the ore at their McClean Lake mill, now under construction. Proposed systems provide safe mining and ore handling, and allow the milling of McArthur River ore at Key Lake and Cigar Lake ore at McClean Lake. This avoids the disturbance of new sites for milling and tailings disposal.The McArthur River and Cigar Lake deposits are the largest known high-grade uranium deposits in the world. The ore grades at McArthur River and Cigar Lake are at least 100 times those that are mined elsewhere. It is proposed to mine these deposits using remote underground mining methods, to crush and grind the ore underground, to pump a thickened ore slurry to surface, and to transport it in special containers by truck to the mills.During all mining and processing stages the ore is fully contained. Radon emission is controlled by positive ventilation of all process vessels, with the process ventilation backed up by the primary mine ventilation system. Radiation is controlled by heavy steel pipe and vessel walls, concrete walls and sometimes lead sheeting."

This paper describes how Automated Mining Systems (AMS) is evolving the state-of-the-art in guidance systems for autonomous underground vehicles. The techniques, trade-offs, and lessons learned from these systems are described, including the safety regime that has been implemented. First generation autonomous guidance systems for underground vehicles relied on infrastructure for the vehicle to follow. However, there are additional costs associated with that approach. The current generation uses a pair of laser range finders as its only guidance sensors. This system uses a minimum of infrastructure, in the form of a redundant system of location referencing. Advanced steering and drive control algorithms are incorporated into this generation of system. The next generation of infrastructureless guidance systems will be based on a 3D vision sensor, which was originally developed for autonomous Mars rovers and is being adapted for underground mining use. Results of early underground field trials are presented, along with a description of this emerging technology.

The mechanical, thermal and bioproperties of titanium alloys allow their wide use in different industries. Compared to aluminum alloys, titanium alloys are very tough, making them that much more difficult to machine than aluminum alloys. Most studies conducted on these types of materials have mainly covered and made comparisons in terms of cutting speed, cutting force and mechanical properties. Recently however, their sustainability and environment parameters have begun to attract significant interest, and it has been found that machining processes generate particles that can be harmful for health and the environment. In this paper, particle emission is investigated during the turning of the titanium Ti6A14V and 6061-T6 aluminum alloys.

Aluminium industry has an increasing interest in the diminution of the energy consumption of the Hall-Heroult process by the reduction of the anode bottom covering with gas. Electrically isolating carbon-dioxide bubbles, produced at the anode, increase the ohmic resistance of the cell. As the gas production rate is determined by the applied current density, anode covering can be decreased only by a faster evacuation of the gas from the inter-electrode space. Among others, the inclination and curvature of the anode bottom promotes the release of the bubbles and thus decreases the mean value of the covering. Indeed, anode, insert in the molten cryolite bath has a square shape with horizontal bottom. However, inhomogeneous anode consumption, electro-erosion, bath circulation and the inclination of the bath-metal interface modify this shape gradually during electrolysis. Anode bottoms become inclined with rounded comers. This concentrates the gas generation to the center zone of the anode. As the bubble layer cannot be observed directly because of the hostile environment and the opacity of the bath, real scale air-water systems are used to study the impact of the anode geometry on the anode covering and the bubble induced flow. However, the physical properties of such a system are different than that we can found in the real cells. A simulator using the Lagrangian description of the bubble layer has been built and presented in earlier papers. This tool was used to investigate the effect of the anode inclination on gas covering and bath velocity, for both C02-cryolite and air-water system. Results obtained for the second system were compared to experimental data .

"The purpose of this paper is to determine the best techno-economic alternative for the treatment of tin ores, when comparing the various mining and metallurgical methods of preconcentration, concentration, volatilization (fuming) and up to the final stage of selling to the smelter. The study of the influence of the different parameters of cost, recovery and quoted prices has motivated the paper, which aims at determining the best process of ore treatment in terms of its techno-economic feasibility.Method of WorkOn the basis of head grades of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0% tin, the following alternative methods of treatment are possible:1. Mining-Concentration-Smelting.2. Mining-Preconcentration-Fuming-Smelting.3. Mining-Concentration-Separation, with direct smelting and fuming/smelting of the two fractions produced.The calculations were carried out on the basis of existing information and publications concerning the various experimental recoveries in the operating mills of COMIBOL. In the case of concentrates containing less than 10% or more than 40% tin, extrapolation was required.The final grade of the tin concentrates and the gross weight of the concentrate were calculated on the basis of the estimated recovery curves. The costs of the preconcentration and the concentration stage s were determined per gross metric ton of material treated.The calculation of the cost of the smelting stage is similar for all the alternatives, the royalties and smelting charge varying with the grade of the final concentrate. In the fuming stage, a uniform recovery of 90% was taken in all cases so as to obtain a final concentrate grade of 65% tin, regardless of the head grade of the feed material.For the separation stage, the following considerations apply:a) Separation can be carried out by gravity separation or flotation methods.b) The cost of separation varies depending on the system used.c) The distribution of tin in the two fractions is 100% at this stage. In other words, there is no loss of tin during separation."

THE Ontario Refining Company, Limited, wholly-owned subsidiary of The International Nickel Company of Canada, refines the entire blister copper output of the latter's Copper Cliff smelter. Prior to 1936, the blister was cast in 460-lb. cakes at the smelter, loaded on open cars, and transported by rail to the refinery, a distance of approximately 1 1/4 miles. Here the cakes were transferred to the plant narrow-gauge system, charged to furnaces, and re-melted. This procedure necessitated the operation of holding furnaces and casting machines at the smelter -extensive re-handling-and melting down of a cold charge at the refinery. Transfer of the copper in molten form direct from converters to anode furnaces promised a considerable reduction in costs, and this possibility was investigated. As a result, a portable holding furnace, or hot-metal car, was designed and constructed. It was placed in operation in July, 1936, to be followed a year later by three additional units of slightly modified design. Figure 1 shows the original car, and Figure 2 the lacer type. With four cars in service, operations were placed on an all 'hot-metal' basis.

When rivers are contaminated from industrial operations, as often occurs near repositories of spent mine tailings, decision-support tools can be critically important in evaluating the effectiveness of various engineering impact-management measures. Even where data describing river flows and quality are sparse, simple mixing-zone models can be constructed that can contribute greatly to understanding how impact-management measures can differentially affect existing river-chemistry regimes. There can be circumstances where accumulated surface waters near contaminated land can bear contaminant loadings that could be acceptable to river regimes if there were methods available to evaluate optional discharge rates and to predict post-mixing consequences on river chemistry. Nomographs can be constructed to evaluate discharge regimes that appear capable of releasing contaminated accumulated pond water without compromising water quality in a nearby river. River-mixing zone models also contribute to predicting rates of acceptable discharge and release to the receiving environment.

Scaffolds are temporary structures built to facilitate construction activities on site. A considerable amount of resources are allocated to scaffolding on industrial projects. Variability in geometrical features and space accessibility of structures on industrial projects, in addition to involvement of different trades that share the use of scaffolds, requires an extensive understanding of scaffolding requirements. Hence, it?s important to plan and estimate scaffolding man-hour requirements for the different construction areas on an industrial site. Contributing factors involved in such estimates include the list of trades that work in a construction area, trade working hours, volume of work, geometry of equipment erected, etc. A simulation template for predicting scaffold erection man-hour values for individual construction areas in an industrial project was developed in Simphony 4.0. The template is based on mapping the geometry of equipment and other factors to man-hours of scaffold work. The template facilitates the use of distributions as inputs and produces a range estimate of scaffold man-hours. The mapping is based on a linear regression model derived from existing project data from PCL Industrial Management Inc. The template is being further developed to incorporate the ability to predict scaffold erection schedule and material requirements based on construction work areas or equipment lists of an industrial construction project.

Abstract - Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morpho­logical characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively , estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry . Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infiltration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in turn, was deter­ mined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid:rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold. Thus, long-range gold mobilization in the Witwatersrand Basin can be expected to be the exception rather than the rule.

This paper deals with the drilling and blasting methods employed at the Cassiar mine, which is located just south of the B.C.-Yukon border. It covers both the "pit" and "peak" mining operations. Specific problems, such as working in frozen ground, are discussed, and the breaking characteristics of the various rock formations are outlined. The paper concludes with a brief mention of the equipment used in the operation, as "~ell as an outline of the breaking costs. Chrysotile asbestos fibre occurs in a faulted enlargement of a serpentine sill lying conformably be-tween a series of sedimentary beds and volcanic flows which dip at 45 degrees into the mountain. 1N THIS PAPER, the writer proposes to limit his comments to few generalized phases of the subject, based on his personal experience in the midwestern United 'States and in one section .of the Coal Branch in Western Alberta. The following statistics are submitted to show the importance that strip mining has assumed in the coal mining industry of the United States. In 1914, 1,281,000 tons of strip coal were produced, amounting to 0.3 per cent of the total production. In 1948, the total was 13~,505,000 tons, representing 23.3 per cent. In 1949, the percentage figure dropped slightly and this can be partially accounted for by the labour disturbances prevalent throughout the year. In 1914, there were 48 power shovels and draglines being used in the stripping of coal; in 1949 there were 3,712, not to mention other types of coal stripping equipment such as bulldozers, tractors and scrapers, rotary excavators, and stackers. At the bituminous coal mines in Western Canada, strip mining was introduced only a few years ago, two of the major reasons for its development being the need for increased production during the war and post-war years and the need to hold the line on increasing production costs, but even in these few years the percentage of strip production has in-creased to such an extent that some mines that, five or six years ago, were producing all their tonnage from underground operations are today obtaining up to 80 per cent of their total output from strip mines.
