"The results of applying Japanese pumping technology to North American reclamation projects will be discussed.IntroductionEconomic high-density mineral reclamation and subsequent transportation of solids through a pipeline presents many formidable engineering problems.In North America where space has rarely been a facto r, industry has generally relied upon the traditional dumping of material into various waste ponds, etc . In Japan, where confined geographies and stringent environmental regulations are enforced, alternative solutions for disposal or reprocessing of waste material had to be found.High-density mineral reclamation system designed by theoretical formulas is almost impossible because solids composition, i.e. concentration, velocity, moisture content, solid size, etc. can only be controlled within a broad pumping range.Traditionally this has restricted dredging of material to relatively dilute slurries whereas it is usually preferred to reduce water usage with its associated power and reclamation costs to a minimum and reclaim as high a concentration as possible.At Toyo Pumps North America we recognized these pumping limitations and began to develop and manufacture a range of standard and auxiliary equipment that would exceed these technical restrictions."

"Mana/ta Coal Ltd. 's Costello Mine, located seven kilometres east of Estevan, Saskatchewan, has been operating at the present location since 1960. During the past twenty-three years, annual production of lignite coal has averaged 590 000 tonnes. The coal is used for power generation and for industrial and domestic use. Markets, operating techniques, facilities in place and reclamation are discussed. Introduction The Costello Mine (formerly the Klimax Mine) is located in southeastern Saskatchewan, approximately 210 kilometres southeast of Regina and 5 kilometres from the United States' border, as shown in Figure 1. The present mine, 7 kilometres east of the city of Estevan, has been operating since 1960. The history, however, of the Costello Mine and of the Estevan Coalfield dates from the initial settling of the area in the 1880s. Mining initially consisted of burrowing into the side of the Souris River Valley or other hillsides where the coal seam was exposed. Eventually, slopes were put down in the Estevan/Bienfait area and vigorous underground activity existed. In the late 1920s surface strip mining was introduced. The use of strip mining progressed to the point where it completely replaced underground mining in the 1950s and it is the only method in use today. During the past 23 years annual production has averaged 590 000 tonnes. The lowest production was in 1960 when the mine was starting up at 167 000 tonnes and the highest production was in 1977 when production was 1 509 000 tonnes. The Costello Mine controls approximately 11 400 hectares of mineral rights in the Estevan area. This is made up of 4 900 hectares of freehold coal and 6 500 hectares of leases. The area forms a large, irregular shaped configuration. Most holdings are contiguous and adjacent. The mine also owns some 8 400 hectares of surface rights. The lands under the Costello Mine's surface rights control, which are not being used in the mining operation, are leased to local farmers and ranchers. This ensures that the land is used to its full potential, both before and after mining."

"A computer model has been developed for evaluating the performance of truck and shovel operations in an open-pit mine. The data required for describing the haulage network are simplified and shift startup and ending procedures specific to any given mine can be incorporated into the model readily . The model uses a FORTRAN-based simulation language SLAM and can be tailored to the conditions and practices of a particular mine.The model is used to analyze truck and shovel operations, evaluate different haulage layouts in the planning stage, or compare the expected performance of alternative truck dispatching systems.Stochastic simulation is used to model the random variation in time required f or the individual activities. This gives a more realistic representation of the processes under study. Simulation runs show good agreement with actual performance. The model is especially useful for examining alternatives in equipment acquisition , haulroad design, truck-shovel allocation and dispatching methods. The results of such simulations provide a sound basis f or making major management decisions.IntroductionTruck haul age is widely used in open-pit mining operations. It is also the largest cost item in the operating costs of an openpit mine, in some cases accounting for an estimated 50% of operating costs(1) , Truck replacements, which are necessary from time to time, involve large amounts of cap ital. Increasing depth of mining and consequent increase in stripping ratios require additional capital investment in the truck-shovel fleet. The sharp rise in energy costs over the last decade has also contibuted significantly to an increase in truck fleet operating costs . All these factors have led mine operators to search for ways to improve the effectiveness of the truck-shovel fleet, in order to lower costs and maintain a profitable operation in the face of declining markets and increasing world wide competition.Control of truck haulage in an open-pit mine is usually done in one of two ways."

"The customary onslaught of government budgets this spring offers lots of interesting reading to the mining industry.While the favourable changes tend to get all the fanfare, there are some ""sleepers"" in the host of proposed changes which will be bitter pills for some mining people to swallow.IntroductionOn a scale of one to ten, the Canadian mining industry will probably give this year's federal and provincial budgets a score that is pretty close to five. "This paper describes a methodical approach to the estimation of the orientation and the magnitude of in-situ stresses. The study was performed at the Ruttan Mine, Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. , a 6,000 T.P.D. underground operation, located in northern Manitoba, Canada. It involves an initial estimate to be made based upon: structural interpretation • virgin stress measurements conducted in other areas (world wide, regional)The verification of the prevailing stress regime was made by conducting CSIRO hollow inclusion(1) overcoring measurements. The current cost for a virgin stress determination is about $7000 per measurement(2) and the difficulty encountered in attaining a good reading is high. This paper will describe the analytical procedures employed at Ruttan in evaluating the in-situ stress magnitude and orientation based on three overcore tests. It is proposed to perform an additional six measurements in order to verify the following results:Vertical stress = av (MPa) = 0.027 by depth (m)Major principal stress = o! "Brogan coal containing mean averages of 6,93% w/w total sulphur (1.1% sulphate sulphur, 1.6% organic sulphur and 4.24% pyritic sulphur) and 16.34% mineral ash was used as the test coal in these studies.Shake-culture leaching studies on seven size fractions of the coal, ranging in size from 0.045 mm to 1.7 mm, showed that the rate of pyrite leaching was inversely proportional to the particle size. As the use of continuous stirred tank reactors would be uneconomical for the reclamation of waste coal, column leaching studies were initiated on coal sieved to >6.35 mm to < 12.7 mm, The leachate was monitored for all metal ions and the release of iron was used to monitor the rate of pyrite oxidation . Measurable amounts of Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, and V, all of which can replace iron in the pyrite crystal structure, were released during the initial stages of leaching. Further, high concentrations of AI, Ca and Sr and trace amounts of Sn, As. Se, B, Ca, Cr, Si, and Ti were detected in the column effluents.These studies suggest that bacterial leaching will remove the pyrite and qualitative amounts of environmentally undesirable trace metals from the coal if such a process is developed for waste coal reclamation.IntroductionIn 1947, Colmer and Hinkle showed that acid mine drainage was the result of an oxidative attack of the iron-mineral sulphides by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to produce sulphuric acid . Ashmead (1955) proposed the use of these organisms to desulphurize coal , but the subsequent research effort was concentrated on the metabolism and physiology of these extreme acidophiles.A limited number of studies have been reported on the bacterial leaching of pyrite from coal (Silverman et al., 1963; Dugan, 1977). However, the bacterial oxidation of pyrite is a self-limiting first-order reaction, probably due to the precipitation of Fe(OH)J and elemental sulphur , which progressively inhibits intimate contact between the bacterial cells and the sulphide-mineral surface. Consequently, the best pyrite oxidation experiments with coal reported to date required five days to remove 97070 of the pyrite (Dugan &Apel , 1978) using mixed cultures of T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans."

"Coals from the Corporation's Lingan and No. 26 mines are classified as high-volatile A bituminous, with a very low inherent ash and containing all essential properties to provide metallurgical coal, with the exception of a high sulphur content. Only through proper cleaning at low specific gravity can the pyritic sulphur fraction of the coal be liberated to an extent where final sulphur meets coking standards. This first section of the paper deals with the operation of a Dutch State Mines heavy-media cyclone circuit to achieve an actual separation in the region of 1.30 specific gravity. A discussion of the parameter of control which must be applied along with an appraisal of the results obtained is included in the paper.Introduction Very high fluidity and unusually low ash are the outstanding characteristics of coal from Devco's mines in the Harbour seam of the Sydney coal field. However, sulphur content, mainly pyritic, ranges from 1 to 2.50Jo. To obtain the low and consistent sulphur level required in metallurgical coking coals, preparation at low specific gravity is required. Metallurgical coke is used as the fuel in an iron blast furnace. Its sulphur content largely determines the quantity of slag required to remove it and therefore influences furnace productivity and unit costs. Typical data on the various coal properties of importance in the production of coke are included in Table 1."

"Micron or sub-micron size gold inclusions in sulphide minerals cannot be extracted by conventional cyanidation. The gold surfaces must first be exposed by decomposition of the sulphides. As an alternative to roasting, pressure oxidation was found to be a most satisfactory method to decompose the sulphides and expose the gold particles. For cyanidation the pressure oxidation pulp has to be neutralized and stabilized with lime. It was found that thiourea can extract the gold directly from the pressure oxidation pulp without pH adjustment and oxidant addition. The main obstacles against the common use of thiourea are circumvented by a recently described control method of the emf during leaching.INTRODUCTION Amalgamation and cyanidation are the most conventional processes for gold extraction. The prerequisite for gold extraction is the possibility of gold surface to be contacted by mercury or by the cyanide solution. Encapsulated gold has little chance of contact and this leads to poor extractions.The reasons why a gold ore may be refractory are: micron or sub-micron size gold particles included in the sulphide minerals, such as pyrite and arsenopyrite; presence of and association with antimony, arsenic, tellurium and carbonaceous minerals. Some alternative processes, such as double oxidation(1,2), pretreatment with lime , H202, chlorine and Caro's acid, roasting and thiourea leach, have solved some of the problems of ""refractory"", but the sub-micron gold in sulphide minerals still shows little response. Roasting and the cyanidation of the calcine was one of the most successful approaches for this type of gold ore.There are two disadvantages to the roasting process: (1) the generation of sulphur, arsenic, antimony and mercury containing gases is undesirable and the control is extremely expensive; (2) gold particles might be fused in the roasted product and the oxidized base metals in the calcine might reduce the cyanidation efficiency. In recent years the pressure oxidation process has been considered as one of the more effective and satisfactory methods to decompose the sulphide minerals and expose the gold surface to the cyanide leach solution. The pollution problem could be better controlled and the gold extraction is more amenable."

"The objective of this paper is to describe the potential impact of inter-provincial competition f or new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. It will be shown that the ramifications of such actions are potentially severe, especially since the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which Canada purportedly possesses a significant degree of market power. More specifically, the paper addresses the impact of possible expansions in New Brunswick, Manitoba and, perhaps, Saskatchewan. The findings suggest that such initiatives could result in substantial excess capacity and the dissipation of monopoly rents. In summary, given the market structure of the industry, it is unlikely that the employment and economic effects associated with industry expansion will offset the loss in national welfare attributable to rent dissipation.IntroductionThe objective of this paper is to discuss the potential impact of inter-provincial competition for new output capacity on the Canadian potash industry. The ramifications of such competition are potentially severe: given that the potash industry is one of the few non-fuel minerals in which we purportedly possess a significant degree of market power(1), it is important that sound supply management practices are followed. "THE LETHBRIDGE COAL FIELD lies mainly .to the north and west of the city of Lethbridge. Mining carried on in this area for over eighty years until 1965. Before the building of a railway the coal was carried by bullock wagon to Montana for use in smelting, and for a while by river boat to Medicine Hat for railway use. The single, almost flat, worked seam is designated the ""Galt"" seam and is about 1.5 metres thick. It belongs to the Belly River formation and is under cover of 80 to 180 metres of weakly stratified sediments. A complex system of cross faults adds to the mining difficulties. Close timbering required in the entries and rooms reflected in a high timber cost and lower output per man shift. The coal is High Volatile"" C"" bituminous in rank with maximum gross calorific value of 11,200 Btu per pound and with a well defined cleavage. Roof conditions in the field range from very tender and very heavy on the south end of the field and west of the Oldman River to a more stable character to the north. Relatively speaking, the whole field would earn a rather tender rating and definitely so in relation to many U.S. fields. Floor conditions are characterized by a bentonitic type heaving in the south end of the field west of the Oldman river to a more stable situation in the north, which can tolerate shuttle car operation if kept drained. Water problems are minimal, except paralleling the Oldman River, where the seam dips below the river level. While vigilance is necessary to prevent accumulations of gas, the volume is rather limited. The seam was entered by shafts, except where small mines were located along the Oldman river banks and gained access by drifts. The coal seam was developed by driving either 3 or 4 Face entries 2 1/2 metres (8 ft) wide on 18-metre ( 60-ft) centres. Sets of dual butt entries driven at right angles to the Face entries completed development work. Normally rooms up to 8 metres wide were turned off the butt entries on up to 11 - metre centres. These were worked in groups of three to five, depending on the roof conditions, and normally advanced 60 m (200 ft). In some areas rooms had to be abandoned short of their objectives due to roof pressure, heaving floor and intermittent work."

"This paper provides a bird&apos;s eye view of the pattern of gold discoveries since 1823, the year of Canada&apos;s first gold find, up to 1983. Within this 160-year period, more gold was discovered in Canada during the last ten-year period (1973-1982) than during any previous decade. The record suggests that the potential for further major gold discoveries is high, which bodes welt f or the future of Canadian gold mining.IntroductionCanada has an impressive history as a gold producer. Since 1921 we have occupied second or third place among the world &apos;s gold producing nations, after South Africa and most of the time the U.S.S.R. Canadian gold production over the last hundred years has added up to some 6 per cent of all-time world production.The sharp rise in the price of gold in the 1970s led to a surge of gold exploration, which in turn resulted in the discovery of significant quantities of gold in Canada. How do these recent discoveries rate in comparison with those of the more distant past? For example, are the quantities of gold in notable discoveries of recent year s, such as Hemlo and Detour, in the same league with the amounts of gold discovered around 1910 in the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake district s of Ontario? Can the combined gold content of the recent discoveries be likened to that o f the almost 40 major Canadian gold deposits, along with numerous smaller ones, discovered in Canada during the 1920s and 1930s? What are the implications of the more recent gold discovery record for future rate s of gold discovery in Canada?This paper attempts to glean answers to such questions from an overview of the period that begins in 1823, the year of Canada&apos;s first gold discovery. Gold deposits come in two major types: placer deposits and lode deposits in solid rock . Placer gold is distributed in sand and gravel. Gold in solid rock occur s mostly in gold ore filling fissures."

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

"The Bui/moose Mine is in the northeast coal area of British Columbia, and less than $300 million was spent to bring this 2.3 million-tonnes-per-year metallurgical and thermal coal mine into production by November 1, 1983, one month ahead of schedule. The project is an unincorporated joint venture undertaking, with Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, holding 51%, Lornex Mining Corporation holding 39%, and Nissho-lwai (Canada) Ltd. holding 10%. Bullmoose Operating Corporation will be the manager and operator of the project. This paper will broadly cover the history and exploration work on the property, the geology, open-pit mining plans and equipment, the preparation plant flowsheet from breaker station to clean coal silo, the 35 km highway truck haul, the railroad loadout system, manpower requirements, approvals and permits, and general financial arrangements. Introduction The Bullmoose Mine Project is located about 87 km by road south of Chetwynd, B.C. and consists of an open-pit coal mine, a plant facility in the Bullmoose Creek valley below the mine, and a separate rail loadout facility on the British Columbia Railway Branchline near the new town of Tumbler Ridge some 35 km by road to the east. The plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.3 million tonnes per year (mty) of washed metallurgical and thermal coal. Long-term metallurgical coal contracts for high-quality, medium-volatile, bituminous coal have been signed with nine Japanese buyers for 1.7 mty, and the balance of0.6 mty will be for thermal coal production. Plant construction began in the spring of 1982, and in May 1983, preproduction waste and overburden removal in the mine was started. The plant began tuning up in October and was fully operational by December 1983. Metallurgical coal began moving to the coast in unit trains during November, and first vessel loading at the Ridley Island port began in late December 1983."

"The development of the Centrifugal Mill jointly by Chamber of Mines (Johannesburg) and LURGI GMBH (Frankfurt) had been described by L. Kitschen e.al. during the 14th IMPC at Toronto in October 1982. Further investigations, using a 55 kW semi-industrial mill, installed at LURGI's Research Laboratories, were concentrated on efficiency and wear in grinding.The test results showed, that efficiency increases when increasing the ball load between 60 and 80 % by volume. Furthermore, the efficiency is increased by speeding up the mill, thus increasing the centrifugal force to up to 14 times the force of gravity. Applying these findings to grinding of a Canadian iron ore spiral concentrate, a saving in grinding power of 30 % was experienced, when comparing with ordinary wet ball milling.Investigations of several shapes of the grinding chamber cross section and linings and several types of materials showed, that no increase of liner or ball wear will occur compared to conventional ball mills when choosing suitable lining patterns. 1. DEVELOPMENT OF THE CENTRIPUGAL MILLThe centrifugal mill was developed with the aim of finding a grinding unit that can operate at a higher power concentration than the conventional tumbling mills.LURGI felt the necessity for such a mill in connection with a hydrometallurgical process developed at the beginning of the seventies, which incorporated an activating grinding step as one of the essential process features. At that time, the Chamber of Mines in Johannesburg was investigating possibilities of underground wet grinding and preconcentration of gold ores aiming at a decrease of mining costs by reducing the quantities, especially for mines operating at depths up to 3600 m, by changing over from rope hoisting to hydraulic transportation systems. After the Chamber of Mines had initiated the development work on its own, in 1974 a cooperation between the two organisations was started."

"Fording Coal Limited is one of Canada's largest producers of metallurgical coal for the export market. Medium- to highvolatile coals are mined at its Fording River operations in southeastern British Columbia. This paper discusses some of the mine design and production related problems encountered, and how they have been resolved. Other aspects of the operation such as geography, geology and standard mining methods employed are also covered.IntroductionFording Coal Limited was formed in 1968 to mine and market metallurgical coal resources held by the company in the East Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia<1>. The company, at its Fording River operations, holds approximately 19,635 hectares of coal lands, having an estimated resource of 3.5 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal. Total reserves are approximately 520 million tonnes.Fording Coal is owned 600Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises Limited and 400Jo by Cominco Limited. Cominco itself is owned approximately 540Jo by Canadian Pacific Enterprises. The company, originally staffed and managed by Cominco, has been independent since January 1978, with its own board of directors, management, staff and employees. The head office is in Calgary, Alberta. The Fording River operations are located in British Columbia, approximately 70 km north of the Crowsnest Pass, near the Alberta/ British Columbia boundary, only 150 km by air and 320 km by road from Calgary.A contract was signed in 1969 with the Japanese steel mills to provide 45. 7 million tonnes of metallurgical coal over fifteen years, commencing in 1972, at an annual rate of 3 .05 million tonnes per year. The mine is presently expanding annual production capacity from the original 3.0 million long tons (3.05 million tonnes) to in excess of 5.0 million tonnes.Concurrent with this production expansion, a vigorous marketing effort has diversified Fording's customers to include additional countries in the Pacific Rim area. Three cleaned coal products are now marketed compared to the single ""standard blend"" product originally shipped to satisfy the Japanese contract. The product specifications are listed in Table I."

"I. INTRODUCTIONA significant development in flotation over the past few years has been the increasing industrial use of flotation columns, primarily in Canada. The column differs dramatically from conventional mechanical flotation machines, both in design end operating philosophy, which has been a principal reason for its slow acceptance by the mineral industry. Boutin, Tremblay and Wheeler (1. 2) developed the concept in the early 1960's and since then plant and laboratory columns have been marketed commercially by Column Flotation Company of Canada Ltd. In 1980-81 at Mines Gaspe, Quebec, three columns replaced 13 conventional cleaners in a molybdenum upgrading circuit, with superior results (3). Since then many of the copper producers in British Columbia have installed columns for copper and molybdenum cleaning, including Gibraltar, Lornex, Highmont and Island Copper. There now appears to be widespread interest in flotation columns.The column is particularly attractive for applications involving multiple cleaning stages and can upgrade In a single stage compared with several stages of mechanical cells. This results in simpler, more controllable circuits. Importantly, the column itself is well suited to computer control. A significant problem, however, has been that of translating laboratory data to plant performance. The purposes of this communication are to address the problem of column scale-up and to describe some of the transport mechanisms of a flotation column, leading to a kinetics based model.A schematic of a flotation column is shown in Figure]. Industrial columns are up to 13 m high and 0.3 to 1.8 m in cross section (either square or circular). Three zones can be identified:a collection zone, with feed entering 2 to 3 m below the top of the column and descending against rising bubbles generated at a gas sparger; a washing zone, where a packed bubble bed is generated by a downward flow of wash water; and a conventional froth (2 - 5 cm thick), the sole purpose of which is particle transport to the launder. The tailings withdrawal at the bottom of the column is controlled at a rate slightly greater than the feed flowrate (called a positive bias).An important element is the washwater, added just below the froth zone. The component of the washwater that flows downward (to make up the bias) is sufficient to prevent coalescence of rising gas bubbles. The packed bubble beg so generated is very efficient at suppressing gangue entrainment to the concentrate."

"The past 14 years have brought an increased awareness of environmental problems. Surface mining for mineral aggregates has been one o f the issues which ha s sparked fierce controversy and debate. Various level s of government, industry, and the public have engaged in an unending battle for adequate planning, regulation, and rehabilitation of pits and quarries. Agreement has seldom been reached and, as a result, few standards, guidelines or policies have been established, or enforced province-wide.Surface mining ca uses a number of environmental problems including noise, dust, water table disturbances, aesthetic degradation, increased traffic, and health and safety hazards. These problems are particularly serious in urbanizing area s, where people are exposed to the mining operations. Associated with the operational phase of surface mining are the issues generated by the multiplicity of abandoned pits and quarries which dot the countryside. These large, gaping, often dangerous waterfilled holes are a blight o n the landscape, and represent a misuse of land.The environmental problems connected with pit s and quarries are compounded by the fact that accessible reserves of mineral aggregates are being lost through the process o f urbanization. In addition, restrictive zoning at the municipal level is restricting access to even more aggregate rich land. This results in the paradox that the very urbanizing process which creates the demand for aggregates is rapidly reducing the available supply. These problems have stimulated the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to call for a province-wide program of inventory, assessment and planning for the protection o f high-quality reserves in Official Plans. These proposals have met with strong opposition from municipal leaders, who are jealously protecting their autonomy.Environmental management education is a prerequisite for all parties involved in pit and quarry planning, regulation or rehabilitation. To this end the following bibliography of selected articles with attention given to the Ontario experience, should provide helpful information on these topics."

"The Whitewood Mine near Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Approximately 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal is supplied annually to the Wabamun Generating Plant. A high water table, high groundwater pressure, and structural folds contribute to stability problems in the fine-grained overburden. Significant increases in coal recovery have been achieved in recent years through improvements in water management and mining methods. Agricultural capability of the post-mining landscape has also been improved following the completion of mining/ reclamation activities. Introduction The Whitewood Mine, located to the north of Lake Wabamun and seventy kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated by Manalta Coal Ltd. Figure 1 shows the location of the Whitewood Mine with respect to the city of Edmonton. The mine presently supplies two million tonnes annually of sub-bituminous ""C"" coal to the 582-megawatt Wabamun Generating Plant located adjacent to the mine. The area is characterized by a high water table-, rolling coal seams and an overburden that consists of muskeg, clay and various sedimentary layers of sand, gravel and fine-grained sandstone. These distinctive characteristics require careful attention in order to not only meet the coal delivery requirements of the Wabamun Generating Plant but also to do so economically. Historical Background A small-scale underground coal mine was opened in the Wabamun area in 1910 by the Conner Coal Mining Co. Ltd. Underground operations were continued by several operators until 1948 when the Alberta Coal Co. Ltd. opened a strip mine which was subsequently taken over by the Alberta Southern Coal Co. "There are many tests that can be used to characterize and classify coals, and describe their quality. One of the easier tests, and most versatile in its application, is petrography. Rank and coal type are precisely defined by petrographic evaluation, and in this paper they are compared with other definitions of rank and coal type. Brief descriptions are given of the various rank tests, and of rheological and coking tests used to describe coking-coal quality in Canada. Similarly, tests used to evaluate thermal coal quality are discussed. Finally, the use of these tests as parameters to classify Canadian coals is examined with reference to four coal classifications.Introduction Among all coals there are two independent variables that are required to evaluate coal quality. These are, coal rank and coal type (or composition), and although coal petrography can be used to precisely define them, other methods are often used to provide values that are, in fact, functions of rank and coal type. For example, volatile matter yield is used as a proxy for rank, and free swelling index is used as a proxy for coal type in the International Classification of Hard Coals by type. Currently, there are a number of methods in use in Canada to define rank. The approach taken here, (obviously the author's bias), is that Romax, the mean maximum reflectance of vitrinite, is both a quick and an accurate measure of rank. It is logical to compare the other techniques employed in the measurement of rank to this favoured method. Coal type is, in theory at least, simply a quantitative measure of the various varieties of coal. In practice, the microscopic entities are assigned to a Reactive or Inert category, and at that point objectivity fades from petrography. Despite this somewhat subjective approach, petrographic composition of coals remains an independent variable of such.importance that its place in the evaluation of coal is essential. In this paper, a variety of me.thods that are used to assess rank and coal type are reviewed and compared; the influence of these variables over other parameters that are used to determine the quality of metallurgical and thermal coals is examined, and their usefulness in coal classifications is discussed."

"Kidd Creek is a large volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposit, located near the west end of the Abitibi greenstone belt, 27 km north of Timmins, Ontario. The rhyolite geology is characterized by a NNE-striking and steeply east-dipping package of rhyolite volcaniclastics upon which has been imposed a strong ESE-striking and north-dipping structural fabric . Massive rhyolite units with grey-black. chloritic cores and yellow, sericitic margins intrude as dykes into the stratigraphic footwall and as sills higher in the stratigraphy. Massive rhyolite units positioned near the top of the felsic pile exhibit an extensive marginal development of hydraulic fracturing and are termed crackle-brecciated rhyolite.The stringer sulphide zone is positioned in a lobate blanket of crackle-brecciated rhyolite at the top of the felsic pile. The stringer sulphide zone is characterized by a mature chemical alteration, being specifically depleted in alkalis and enriched in iron-rich chlorite. with accompanying silica, sericite and carbonate alteration. A suite of trace elements characterizes this mature alteration. The massive rhyolite units, which intrude lower in the rhyolite volcaniclastics, exhibit a core of weak chlorite alteration and strong marginal sericite alteration. Tight or unfractured massive rhyolite units are essentially devoid of sulphide mineralization and exhibit a suite of trace elements characteristic of this immature alteration. It is interpreted that the massive rhyolite units intruded into an already evolving system and ""choked-off"" active conduits carrying hydrothermal fluids and subsequently acquired an immature alteration signature. Rhyolite units positioned higher in the pile developed intense hydraulic fracturing and a mature alteration coincident with the formation of the stringer sulphide zone. In summary, a model, based strictly upon the rhyolite geology, is reviewed to assist in the exploration for volcanogenic base metal sulphide deposits."
