The EU Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of life vehicles (ELVs) states that in 2015 at least 85 wt.-% of a vehicle has to be reused or recycled. This result in the obligatory need to separate additionally metallic and other components of the automotive shredder residues (ASR), so that they can be professionally prepared for recycling and reuse further. Currently the iron-containing fines of ASR are deposited as it is not possible to process in blast furnaces due to its particle size (< 4 mm), composition and material properties. Additionally problems are also caused in handling and transportation (dust) of the material. This work focuses mainly on the ASR materials utilization in blast furnaces. Material was further separated into two consecutive fractions by carrying out repeated crushing and magnetic separation twice. The two fractions have significantly higher iron content (up to 75 wt.-%) compared to the initial material mixture. The materials were assessed for their usage in blast furnaces based on the possible pelletisation with and without binders, stability of pellets, shape and size of pellets, etc. Pelletisation of the material was carried out with a single mould pellet press. Further lignite coal was added to the mixture as additive which improved the pelletisation behavior and the mechanical stability of pellets. Lignite coal was chosen as a reducing agent in the blast furnace process contributing towards additional savings in energy supplied. The experiments reveal that the production of pellets from iron-containing fines is possible with a lignite coal admixture of about 15 wt.-%. These pellets displayed good mechanical stability and can be used in blast furnace processes in recovery of the recyclable metals which are currently not recycled. The recycling of not yet recyclable metals would reduce the deposition and can be easily adopted into the economic cycle by their utilization. In the current climate of changing the approach to mining and treatment of mineral resources, processing technologies are being developed that require little maintenance and are economically as well as ecologically sustainable. This may also involve the development of entirely new ways of ore processing. One promising approach is to use bioleaching for the pretreatment of gold refractory ores to cyanidation. Capital costs for vat bioleaching of concentrates and ores are very high and cannot be applied for small or medium-size deposits. IRGIREDMET JSC carried out bio heap leaching test work on refractory ore samples from three Russian deposits. Following this biological treatment a combination of flotation, vat bioleaching, and cyanidation are used to recover gold. After heap bioleaching, gold recovery was 75-80 per cent. It was found that efficiency of heap bioleaching process depends on ore feed size. High duration of this process is another feature and it lasts for about a year. This process can be also used for carbonates in the combination with other process during which acid generation occurs. The results of our studies have shown that this technology is amenable for refractory gold ores. Its introduction allows an increase gold recovery and to solve a number of environmental problems. This paper presents the performance study of sag mill in the processing of gold ore. Deterioting ore grade and high demand of metals has tremendously influenced the SAG mills. Today?s high capacity Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills expand vast amounts of energy and in doing so consume tons of shell liners and steel balls, while processing ore. Semi-autogenous (SAG) mill performance is influenced by ball charge, feed properties, shell, grate, and pulp lifter design. In the performance study of SAG mill, based on the results obtained it can be observed that SAG mill performed better at feed size +4 inch and grinding media consumption 0.90kg/mt. In the present study the effect of crusher bypass on SAG mill performance, an immediate drop of throughput ranging from 10-20tph is observed. According to the Darcy?s law, filtration rate should increase with increasing pressure drop (?P) across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, ?P is created by the free water present on the surface of a filter cake. Thus, ?P can become negative when the free water disappears from the cake surface, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In the present work, we have developed methods of overcoming this problem by either increasing the air pressure inside or applying vacuum outside a centrifuge. Laboratory dewatering tests conducted using these provisions showed that the moistures of various minerals and coal fines can be reduced to the level that can obviate the need for thermal drying. The new concept has been successfully tested both at pilot- and full-scale, which lead to commercial deployment through Decanter Machine, Inc., under the trade name Centribaric® centrifuge. Copper recovery via Solvent Extraction (SX) process is a well-known technique, which is practiced commercially for approximately 40 years. The main advantages of the SX process are: an absence of using high temperatures (not more than 50oC), complete recycling of barren solutions, very high selectivity at removal and purification of metals, metal conversion to a form, suitable for easy subsequent recovery. Despite the wide acceptance of Solvent Extraction, it does have some shortcomings, namely SX employs large quantities of volatile organic substances. This leads to huge plant ?footprint? of SX circuits. The SX is very sensitive to low temperatures and quantity of total suspended solids in feed solutions and this causes bad phase disengagement times and therefore poor process performance. And most important ? low grade solutions (with copper concentrations below 1 gram per litre) are very unattractive for treatment via Solvent Extraction process, because capital costs for SX plants are not a direct function of copper tenor in the feed. The combined process with Ion Exchange (IX) and Solvent Extraction ? further called IX/SX by IONTECH Engineering was developed. This combination eliminates SX negative characteristics shown above. The key findings of the IX/SX process are; (1) recovery of copper from pregnant leach solutions with metal concentrations, varying on a broad range; (2) can be operate effectively with very low-graded copper pregnant leach solutions; (3) the construction of large ponds for pre-filtration of the pregnant leach solutions is not necessary; (4) working with turbid solutions and solutions containing large quantities of suspended solids; (5) winter operation without troubles; (6) strongly reduces organic losses; (7) technological approach lead to plant sizes reducing. This paper reviews the main stages of the combined IX/SX process, the applications for metal recovery and introduces projects where the process is applied. Key findings of the process are also presented. A comprehensive technical comparison between processes has been carried out. This paper also evaluates the advantages of using combined IX/SX technology as a purification and separation step in copper production process, with the aim of further increasing the overall copper recovery and to ensure that a suitable copper concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a Ion Exchange (IX) process in the classic Solvent Extraction-Electrowinning process(SX/EW) is found to be beneficial for processing of pregnant leach solutions both from spent and new copper heaps and dumps, acid mine drainage and other industrial streams without any preconditioning as well as in terms of achieving improved recoveries and copper cathode quality.

The importance of bio-products production is enhanced with the abundance and renewability of ligno- cellulosic biomass in comparison to the depleting fossil fuels especially in producing environment friendly energy. Lignin is obtained as a sludge residue from the pulp and paper industries as well as from the bio- ethanol /bio-gas production plants. Lignin is a renewable fuel with a high heating value equivalent to anthracite coal, low ash content and hydrophobic properties. The extracted lignin in paper and pulp mills is usually burnt at the mill directly to cover the energy production costs of the mill. The efficient utilization of lignin can reduce the percentage of lignin sludge used for energy production in comparison to the present situation. Presently the lignin is burnt /incinerated as sludge with minimum of 30 to 50 % moisture content. This high moisture content reduces the energy efficiency and simultaneously utilizes more amount of lignin sludge in producing the required energy. This paper explains a possibility of integrating sludge-pelleting techniques in paper and pulp mills. The integrated sludge-pelleting techniques would lead to an optimal utilization of lignin for energy and would simultaneously save the lignin resource for material utilization. The sludge pelleting process solves also the problem of handling, storage and explosion risks of lignin when compared to the present situation.

Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

The superior characteristics of iron ore pellets compared with natural ore and sinter are well known. Due to the higher grade and bulk density they show improved transport and material handling properties. While charging blast furnaces with pellets an increased productivity is realized through pellet?s uniform structure and composition. The increased productivity is caused by a high permeable furnace burden with a decreased coke usage via fuel injection and oxygen enrichment. Therefore, a narrow pellet size distribution and a minimum content -6.3 mm are necessary (Meyer, 1980). The required pellet size distribution can be achieved on the one hand by screening the fired pellets after the induration furnace and recycle the undersized pellets. On the other hand it is possible to produce high quality iron ore pellets with a high degree of sphericity, the important narrow grain size distribution ranging between 9 to 16 mm with high green strength directly in the pelletizing device. To produce high quality green pellets, possibilities and knowledge about adjustments of the pelletizing device are necessary. The paper presents a classification of state of the art pelletizing systems in accordance with the advantages of the pelletizing disc and pelletizing drum in issues like adjustability, green pellet quality, the recycling rate and the space requirement. By a systematization of the influences on pelletizing the common reliance of objectives on influence like pelletizing moisture, disc inclination, rotational speed, mass flow and rim height are given. With the progressive depletion of known resources of good quality coal and minerals as well as the increasing demand of these minerals by different user industries, the emphasis has been shifted all over the world from selective mining to bulk mining followed by up- gradation to obtain the required quality of concentrate. The column flotation cell is one of the alternatives to reduce the gangue content of fines because of its inherent characteristics viz. easier to operate, low space required, no moving parts etc. A laboratory flotation column is used to conduct experiment. Present work has been undertaken to observe the effect of process variables (gas flow rate, feed/slurry flow rate, and frother concentration) on gas dispersion parameters (gas holdup, bubble surface area flux) in collection zone and to explore the effect of feed (slurry) inlet orientations and gas flow rate on column?s metallurgical performance. The effects of solid particle concentration, size and type (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) of solid on gas dispersion parameters have also been investigated. Test work has been performed in a continuously operating Perspex column (10 cm in diameter and 168 cm in height) using coal, sphalerite and dolomite as solid. Gas hold-up has been measured by phase separation method and mean bubble sizes are estimated from a drift flux analysis. The influence of operating parameters on bubble surface area flux has been discussed. It is observed that gas holdup in collection zone is affected by air as well as feed flow rates and also solid?s type. It is also found that addition of solid decreases the gas holdup and rate of decrease in gas holdup increases when solid concentration increases and particle size increases. Increase in gas flow rate increases recovery in collection zone due to increase in number of bubbles per unit volume of the column. From the experimental results it is evident that cross-current orientation of feed inlet shows slightly better metallurgical performance compared to other orientations. Large-scale separation or flotation cells, used in the primary extraction in the oil sands industry, are integral parts of the overall process of bitumen extraction. Good regulation of the interface level between the bitumen froth and the middlings in these cells can result in a significant improvement in bitumen recovery and throughput, and heavily influence process economics. Automatic control of such industrial processes presents challenges such as multi-phase flow dynamics, variable process gain and time delays, poor quality of measurements and significant disturbances. This paper details a case study application of development of multiple models of the dynamics of the interface level and the design of model predictive controllers (MPC) for a separation cell process. A Model predictive controller (MPC) using linear models is designed and implemented in real time on an industrial separation cell. The industrial implementation results show that the MPC scheme provides significant benefits over the current operations which use a PID controller. The benefits include significant reduction in the variance of the interface level resulting in higher bitumen recovery and smoother downstream operation plus energy savings due to reduced underflow pump speed.

Declining gold grades, mineralogical complexity of ore bodies, increasing input costs, more stringent conditions in the licenses to operate, and uncertain gold price dynamics combine to exert significant ongoing pressure on margins of gold producers. Innovative approaches of extracting the metal from its ores are required to realize value from existing and future assets. In a conventional gold processing plant, size reduction of mined ore to produce floatable or leachable product is a significant cost contributor. A step change in cost reduction will be attained if radically energy efficient grinding approaches can be developed, replacing tumbling mills. In the path towards that goal, some quick wins are possible through waste rejection before grinding, and pre-treatment of mill feed to reduce grinding energy demands. Gold locked in complex mineralizations puts pressure on margins by increasing cost per oz (typically high $/t and low metal recoveries) in the hydrometallurgical steps. Gold miners are primarily price takers. The current narrow range of gold uses (predominantly investment and jewellery) is not an entirely desirable state. Some diversification into commercial uses would potentially be a price stabilizer. In this paper, promising research directions, some not always fully explored in the gold metallurgy research space, are highlighted to stimulate radical innovation for substantial value enhancements. The author strongly believes a shift from a traditionally conservative and incremental innovation approach to a more aggressive one, across all aspects of the gold metallurgy value stream (processes to products), is what the industry needs. The importance of the grinding environment and its effect on sulphide minerals flotation behavior has been known for many years. The grinding environment may play a role in controlling fine and coarse particle flotation along with dissociation of different chemical species in grinding environment. Dissociation of different chemical species and ions within the process water may result from changing the grinding environment. The mining and mineral processing industry undertakes activities that may impact on water resources. These include use and storage of chemical storm-water management, process water management, mine dewatering and management of tailings. In mineral flotation understanding and controlling water quality is paramount important not only because of its effect on flotation but also with respect to control the quality of the water which is released to the environment. Releasing of different anionic and/or cationic chemical species in the process water results from the interactions among different mineral within the ore, process water, and the milling environment. In fact grinding mill acts as an electrochemical reactor which affects the flotation performances of different value minerals as well as the quality of the tailing products. An increasing in antimony content in process/discharge water at Boliden?s Tara processing plant in Ireland to above limitation level was reported in April 2010 which needed to be controlled. An increase up to 6 times of the permitted level was reported which needed an immediate action to control due to environmental considerations. Therefore attempts were made to detect why this higher amount of Sb is released and how to control and minimize its release to the process/reclaim water. This paper discusses how/why Sb content in process/reclaim water was increased by changing the mill electrochemistry and the strategies were taken into considerations to control it. Different strategies, including electrochemical controlling of the milling section, Fenton process, using Bauxsol in treating the process water, etc., have been considered and tested which are described herein. All strategies taken into consideration for solving the problem were successful which indicated good understanding of the issue and good decision making. Furthermore, for each solution the capital and operational costs were roughly estimated. Accordingly, the Sb content in process/discharge water was controlled to a value lower than allowed limitation, i.e., 1 ppm. India has sizeable number of small deposits of rare metal bearing minerals namely columbite-tantalite, pyrochlore, beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and rare-earth element bearing minerals monazite and xenotime in different parts of India. Pegmatites, alkali granites, syenites, and the derived gravel and soils are the main source for rare metal and rare earth (RMRE) minerals. The RMRE minerals are classified as prescribed substances under Atomic Energy act of 1962 keeping in view the uses in the nuclear industry. Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is the sole agency responsible for exploration and exploitation of RMRE minerals in India since 1962. The latest technological advancements and applications in the field of space, electronics, communication and nuclear industry using these metals and their products have necessitated to augment the production and resources of RMRE minerals. These minerals play a significant role in the technological and economic development of the country. The light rare earth element bearing mineral monazite is abundant in beach sands and is being commercially exploited by Indian Rare Earths Limited (IREL). Columbite-tantalite, the chief source for niobium and tantalum (Nb-Ta) metals present in the pegmatitic gravel are recovered by small mobile beneficiation plants. The cut and fill method of mining adapted is eco-friendly. The processing flow-sheet consists of wet sizing at ½ in and 1mm followed by gravity concentration of sized products utilizing the methods of jigging and wet tabling. The sizing equipment include revolving and vibratory screens and the gravity concentration equipments used are fixed sieve jigs and movable screen jigs for final upgradation. The gravity concentrates are further upgraded by magnetic separation to remove magnetite and ilmenite. The mine areas are reclaimed by filling with coarse size tailings and new plantations. These mobile pilot plants were earlier operated in Bihar mica belt, Jharkhand, pegmatitic areas of Karnataka and Nellore mica belt of Andhra Pradesh and are currently being operated in Bastar-Malkangiri pegmatite belt of Chhattisgarh and pegmatites of Jharsuguda district of Orissa. Beryl, lepidolite, spodumene and cassiterite minerals are the by-products from the pegmatite ores. Fergusonite, samarskite and microlite are the other niobium and tantalum bearing minerals which are also found in pegmatites. Xenotime, the chief mineral of yttirium generally occurs in granites and pegmatites. The rare earth minerals monazite and xenotime get concentrated in the placer sands of rivers and beaches. The occurrence of xenotime in the sands of Siri River and Deo River in Chhotanagpur granitic terrain in parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are an example. These sands containing 1-2.5% heavy minerals were processed by a mobile plant consisting of sizing equipments like trommel and vibratory screen followed by separation of heavy minerals from -1mm sands with the help of gravity concentration equipments like spirals/shaking tables/sluices. Xenotime and monazite from the pre-concentrate are further separated by magnetic and electro-static methods. The present paper illustrates the pilot plant set up for the recovery of rare metal as well as rare earth minerals. Poor grade iron ore, suffering from interlocked particles, is challenging for any process technology. Extensive grinding is required to attain liberation and to yield concentrates of desired grade. Fine particles are commonly very difficult to retrieve, resulting in value losses to tailings. In this paper, results from HGMS tests on fine to ultra fine hematite are reported. Special emphasis is put on slurry flow velocity. If hydrodynamic drag force, i.e. flow velocity is not controlled and kept constant during the feed and/or rinse phase, fine particles will not be captured and retained. Flow velocity control and constant flow during separation are achieved by discharge valves/slots and parallel magnetic flux and pulp flow configuration. In tests, increased slurry velocity from 178 to 268mm/s caused Fe-recovery to drop from 78 to 48%. Proving that flow velocity control is essential to optimise grade and recovery. HGMS tests at the Metso mineral laboratory on natural (weathered) hematite fines clearly show a large potential to recover valuables, currently lost to tailings. Even at particle size distributions as low as D80=35µm concentrate grades and recovery are very satisfying. Two samples, in-plant desliming rejects (D80=35µm and 50µm) where significantly upgraded and recovered, from 45,3% to 63,6% and 53,0% to 63,4% Fe, at 73,8% and 81,1% Fe-recovery respectively. Other types of in plant rejects, such as gravity separation or WHIMS tailings, also benefits from HGMS separation. Gravity separation reject, 55,8% Fe, at D80=500µm was tested, yielding a magnetic concentrate of 60,8% Fe at 50,7% Fe-recovery. The results indicated that the hematite was poorly liberated. HGMS separation was repeated after a regrind to D80 150µm, resulting in a magnetic concentrate of 62,8% Fe at 75,9% Fe-recovery. The tests prove that hematite, presently lost to tailings streams, can be recovered by HGMS and thereby significantly contribute to improved overall economy. The beneficiation study of low quality pyrophyllite is conducted to enhance the value of it by selective grinding. In mining stage, the main gangue mineral is quartz, and the content of quartz in ore has an adverse effect on the quality of pyrophyllite. Using the huge difference in hardness between quartz and pyrophyllite, the selective grinding is accomplished using stirred ball mill. As a result, a finer pyrophyllite particle can be easily separated from coarser quartz particle by simple size classification, and the content of Al2O3 of fine particle smaller than 45um increased largely. It means that the pyrophyllite particle is ground selectively compared to the quartz particle, and the quality of pyrophyllite is enhanced.

The phosphate ore sample was taken from the iron tailings after recovering most of magnetite by magnetic separation in Longlin, Yunnan Province of China. Batch flotation tests had been conducted to upgrade the phosphate concentrate by conventional fatty acids reagents under 70% -75 µm of the particle size; however, the unsatisfied results (P2O5 grade of 27.84% and recovery of 49.25%) were obtained. Also there are a large amount of slimes trapped in the concentrate and high-dosages consumption of reagents, for example, more than15 kg/t soda ash and 2 kg/t sodium silicate at only one-staged roughing. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the sample, most of gangues are clay, quartz, and chlorite, which may easy to over-grind and deteriorate the flotation process either on reagents consumption or slurry fluidity or viscosity. A hydro-cyclone had been introduced to pre-concentrate the phosphate ore by scrubbing the slime before flotation, which can result obviously in reducing the dosages of soda ash from 15 Kg/t to 4 Kg/t, and raising the grade of P2O5 in the concentrate from 27.84% to 36.13% at the expense of about 4% recovery of P2O5. They also substantially reduced the time of sedimentation of concentrate after flotation from ~10 to ~1 min. In this paper, the effects on the recovery of P2O5 by the different dosages of flotation reagents with or without de-sliming were studied, with the objective of determining the different effects on the functions of flotation reagents by slime during flotation. This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. A domestic tungsten-tin ore presents very complex property. How to effectively recover the scheelite, wolframite and cassiterite in the ore has long been a difficult problem to be solved urgently. On the basis of process mineralogy study, a main flow-sheet for effective recovery of tungsten-tin minerals has been developed, which including ?fine grinding of feed?bulk flotation of all sulfides followed by their selective separation?iron recovery by LIMS?tungsten-tin minerals bulk flotation using new technique developed by our institute?tungsten-tin recovery by gravity from above tungsten-tin bulk flotation tailings?. As for the treatment of tungsten-tin bulk rougher concentrate, several flow-sheets of tungsten-tin separation by direct hydrometallurgy or a flow-sheet consisting of scheelite cleaning at elevated temperature followed by the gravity separation of scheelite cleaner tailing?separation of wolframite from cassiterite by dry HIMS or by direct hydrometallurgy are developed. For a low grade head ore, all valuable sulfide, magnetite, scheelite, wolframite and cassiterite are recovered with satisfactory in lab scale test.
