Numerical modelling was used to examine damage in wall control operations. Decoupled charges appear to create larger damage zones than fully coupled low density charges with similar charge distributions: Air was shown to be a very efficient coupling medium, while water coupling resulted in significant damage. However, Mach stems are formed when air is used as a decoupling medium, leading to compression of the charge ahead of the detonation wave. Air decked charges generate two damage zones, one close to the charge and another close to the air-deck/stemming interface, where pressure pulses are reflected. The extent of the latter depends on the length of the air-deck.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a method of delaying and loading a shot. Since entering the construction industry, I have learned that cover is needed on a lot of blasts. When in close having to cover shots was new to me and it seemed time consuming and wastefull. Until I really needed it and didn’t have it. So What To Do??? Remember that safety comes first, if you have concerns cover it. Even if you have to sit on your shot all night to wait for cover. This method is not a replacement for cover, but it will help keep your rock down. Do not bet your life, others lives or your career on it.

Ground vibration by rock blasting causes many environmental problems to adjacent structures and human bodies. Growing concerns have been given to the effects of dynamic loading induced by blasting works near safety-related structure like nuclear power plant, hospital, broadcasting station, research institute and tish farm, etc. In order to ensure the safety, rational safe criterion should be established. It requires development of a model to predict the design parameters through more systematic measurement and analysis. Primary estimation by adequate model with general parameters will be very useful for safe design and understanding the possible hazards in advance.

This paper summarizes the investigation carried out on a wide range of rock types, subjected to high velocity impact to simulate explosive action. A Split- Hopkinson Bar apparatus was used to generate the high velocity impact. The rock samples included both homogeneous and isotropic, and anisotropic types. The strain rate achieved was between 600 and 12OO/sec, The respective measured dynamic compressive strengths were compared with their low strain-rate or static values. It was found that the ratio of the dynamic to static values ranged between 2.5 and 4.6. It was also determined that the high strain-rate loading produced finer fragment size distribution than the static loading. The fragment size distribution from the two strain-rate regimes has been further analyzed to establish correlation with rock types and the strength characteristics. The results also confirm that high strain-rate loading (i.e. high detonation pressure and high velocity of detonation in an explosive column) would significantly affect the degree of fineness in a blast.

In April of 2000, two adults and their newborn infant, were poisoned by carbon monoxide in their home and received medical treatment at a Pennsylvania hospital. Carboxyhemoglobin levels were; child - 3 1%, father - 28Oh, and mother - 17%. Initially the furnace was blamed but after further review, blasting at a nearby coal mine was determined to be the source. All other sources of carbon monoxide were ruled out. The blasting was about 400 feet from the house. The conditions that led to the migration of gas include: the blasts were highly confined, the geologic structure contained fractures that served as conduits for the carbon monoxide to reach a hand-dug well outside the house, and the well was atmospherically connected to the basement floor drains.

The traditional concept of scaled-distance modelling for predicting blast induced ground vibration holds many drawbacks, not least of which is the major effect data scatter imparts on confidence determination. An investigation by the Department of Mining and Mineral Engineering, The University of Leeds, England has resulted in the development of simple but effective method of improving prediction capacity through the reduction of effective error by incorporating individual location response into a scaled-distance model. The work is the product of an l&month blast-monitoring campaign at a limestone quarry situated in North Yorkshire, England. The data, when presented in the form of a scaled-distance model, indicates a typical scenario where a good overall correlation becomes marred by the extent of data scatter. Examination of the individual monitoring locations however indicates that the response of the individual location is an important factor in the explanation of the large residuals. The novel approach thathas been developed incorporates a series of locational site factors which when incorporated into a scaled distance model reduces the effective error and therefore improves prediction capacity. The approach is based on using a standard computer package “spread sheet” on the understanding that these are commonly available on all quarry or home computers. This approach has been validated by comparison with a more rigorous statistics method.

Even though there is always a feeling of anticipation before a blast is detonated, most blasts are part of a day’s work. Once in a while there is an event that impresses even the most jaded blaster. Few blasts have had the impact of the Kingdome implosion in March of this year. Fortunately for both the Seattle area and the explosives community, the “impact” of the implosion was far less than many local residents had feared. This outcome, of course, was not by chance, but the result of careful planning and design. An urban implosion requires a mix of engineering, logistics, and public relations. Unique challenges on this project tested the resourcefulness of the entire team.

Vibrations from Dade County (Miami area) quarry blasting and structure responses were measured at 11 locations between February and April, 2000, and 10 homes were inspected to analyze the characteristics of their cracking and other damages. These results were combined with information collected by the County and other studies done in south Florida for a blasting impact assessment specific to this area. In addition over 40 quarry blasts in the nine-week monitoring period, about 800 measurements were available from previous monitoring in Dade and neighboring Broward counties. An overall worst-case analyses based on the highest individual amplitudes suggested that vibrations in some areas could have been as high as 0.35 in/s. While amplitudes in the study period were below this value, they were found to be relatively high for the distances and charge sizes. Attenuation with distance is less in Dade County than found elsewhere with quarries having to use scaled distances several times higher than similar sites in the north. Consequently, the vibrations are perceptible at very large distances.

In order to expand the capacity of Modern Landtill, a groundwater extraction system consisting of a linear system of pumping wells over 2,700 feet long had to be replaced. The new system would be covered by landtill cells to a depth of approximately 400 feet, and therefore would have to be maintenance free. In addition, the new system had to be proven to be more effective than the previous system, groundwater extraction had to be maintained during construction and construction could not disturb either the landfill operation or nearby residential neighbors.

The best method to minimise disturbances from traffic to the neighbourhood and in Urban is probably to go underground. For obvious reasons this will cause vibrations, noise and other environmental effects which need very strict regulations and quality assurance in order to complete the work successfully. One project is “Southern Link”, a part of a ring road system. The system of tunnels includes 16 kilometres of tunnels right beneath the south part of the city of Stockholm. At least 20.000 people will be or could be affected by different kinds of disturbances and pollution such as vibrations, noise, gas and groundwater. Another project is the “Arlanda Link”. A new railway with three stations has been built under the existing and running to Arlanda airport with its terminals. Authorities have carefully judged these projects, which cause complaints from neighbours due to disturbances. The blasting operations are professionally managed by the contractors and controlled by consultants to keep the regulations according to the Swedish standards, which are well described in the tender documents by risk analysis and technical descriptions. In spite of that, one conclusion is that it is not always possible to go underground without exceeding stipulated regulations with existing technique. Some of the regulations also double the cost of excavation

The Porgera joint venture and Dyno Noble have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (sag) mill by optimising the blast fragmentation, The work done so far clearly indicates that significant improvements in sag mill throughput can be achieved by optimizing the blast fragmentation. This paper discusses the planning, implementation and results achieved so far in this project.

Too often, a mine’s operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, processing, etc., are considered independent steps, rather then a continuous process. In fact, these are interdependent operations with each step in the process having an impact on subsequent operations. If the effectiveness of the drilling and blasting operations can be improved, they will impact the entire mining process. Some of the resulting improvements include: level benches on grade; fragmentation and diggability with the result being reduced loading times; haul cycles improvements; and the crushing and milling operations will be more efficient and less energy consumed. Thunderbird refers to this as “Drill to Mill” information cycle or process. This paper focuses on two of the technological enhancements Thunderbird has added to its drill monitors that allow the mines to impact the “Drill to Mill” concept. These enhancements are: incorporating global positioning satellites into drill monitors; and radio off-loading of data.

It was three years ago when the “storm of the century” had taken a firm grip over the Pacific West Coast and inland areas. At the Big Sky ski resort in Montana on Christmas morning two ski patrollers set out to perform an explosives “hand charge” avalanche control mission that would see only one return. It has been difficult to determine exactly what happened. Investigators do know that there were three separate and consecutive attempts to light a safety fuse, when it had apparently been burning since the first attempt. Time ran out after the third attempt. Although this accident has had a profound impact on North American avalanche control programs, I am sure it pales in contrast to the shock and grief experienced by family members who lost a loved one.

The efficiency of the loading system in a mine depends upon the characteristics of the muck pile, the loading machine specifications and the loading practices. The focus of this paper was to look specifically at the size distribution of blasted material, and to quantify its effects on loader productivity. A scale model of LHD was designed and fabricated to represent machines currently employed in the industry. The experiments were performed using crushed Gabbro, which was mixed in various proportions according to Rossin-Rammler size distribution to give five different characteristic particle sizes and five different size distribution constants for each characteristic particle size. The effect of the size distribution constant on peak and mean penetration forces, work done and bucket fill factor was examined. In addition, the influence of mean particle size, 80% passing size (D80) and % oversize on the penetration force and bucket load was investigated.

Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

A number of studies have evaluated excavation methods for the construction of subsurface facilities for a potential deep geologic repository for the disposal of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, NV. Many of these studies suggest that where TBM (tunnel boring machine) methods are not applicable and alternative mechanical excavation methods can not efficiently excavate harder rock drill and blast methods may be the most efficient means of excavation. However, a number of concerns regarding drill and blast applications have been raised in these evaluations, most notably the affects of blasting on the surrounding perimeter, as isolation of the waste by the natural barrier of the surrounding rock is a key element in the concept of a deep geologic repository.

The following is a case study of how LuckStone Corporation improved their blast monitoring and documentation program. A number of resources already at their disposal have been utilized to improve the body of data collected from each blast. The tools being used include GPS, aerial photos, and a user-friendly push button format excel spreadsheet. The data collected include product by product records of materials used, distances to all concerned neighbors, seismograph data, etc: The spreadsheet has been designed to perform an ongoing analysis of blasting trends. The program has been carried out at a corporate level and is in use by blasters at each location. This paper addresses the advantages and drawbacks of this program. It also addresses the ways in which the various tools were integrated, Discussed as well is the need for simplicity when bringing “new” technology to the field and the steps taken in familiarizing the end user to changes.

It is well known that emulsion explosives can be dead-pressed especially in underground blasting. Voids in emulsion explosives will affect such malfunction of explosives. To clarify the factors that affect the dead-pressing phenomena, the characteristics of the pressure wave propagation in emulsion explosives were investigated. Three types of microballoons .or microbubbles, glass microballoons(GMB), resin microballoons(RMB) and chemical gas bubbles, were used as sensitizers for emulsion explosives. The pressure profiles inside the explosives were measured to determine the effects of the microballoons or microbubbles contained. The underwater explosion test and the large-scale drop hammer test were carried out to load the explosives with a dynamic pressure and a quasi-dynamic pressure respectively. In the underwater explosion test, the pressure profiles in the emulsion explosives were measured by a piezo-electric pressure gauge inserted to the center of the explosive cartridge which had a diameter of 30mm. In the large-scale drop hammer test, the same type of pressure gauge was placed at the bottom of the explosives. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The pressure profiles in the sample explosives sensitized by RMB or chemical gases were sharp, while in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB the profile was broad. B) The peak pressure levels in the sample explosives sensitized by RMB or chemical gases were twice as high as that in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB in the underwater explosion test. However in the large-scale drop hammer test, the amplification of the peak pressure is low compared with in the underwater explosion test. C) The impulse value was independent of the types of the microballoons or microbubbles in both tests. It was concluded that the type of the microballoons or microbubbles significantly influenced the characteristics of the pressure wave propagation in emulsion explosives.
