The occurrence of hydrogen sulfide in the gas in solution in the oil produced from the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin oil field in Wyoming constitutes a serious hazard to persons working in, that field. Aware of the general conditions because of petroleum reservoir studies being conducted in that field by its engineers, the Bureau of Mine's willingly agreed to a request of the Petroleum Administration for War to publicize the hazard and the measures for overcoming it. In October 1943 and November 1944, the Bureau of Mines investigated the method's used in handling the oil and in disposing of the hydro¬gen sulfide that occurs with it. This circular reports the results of these observations. HYDROGEN SULFIDE OCCURRENCE IN THE. ELK BASIN OIL FIELD The Elk Basin oil field is in Park County, Wyo., and Carbon County, Mont. It is about 18 miles north of Powell and 12 miles west of Frannie, Wyo. The original Elk Basin oil and gas field was situated in an eroded depression surrounded by an inner rimrock about 200 feet high with a bordering higher plateau about 500 feet above the basin floor.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has received requests from persons who wish to destroy unwanted explosives, and although the information that follows has been accumulated from sources considered reliable,4/ the. Bureau of Mines assumes no responsibility for accidents that may result from following the suggestions offered. Explosives to be destroyed may be fresh material from damaged packages, usable material for which there is no further need, or material that has deteriorated either from natural aging or from improper storage to the point where it is unfit for use.

Bauxite, the principal source of aluminum, has been mined from deposits in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., since 1899; war needs have greatly stimulated production. Many of the ore deposits are basin-shaped and either outcrop or are covered by a shallow-depth overburden at their peripheries; these are mined by stripping and open-pit methods. When stripping becomes economically impracticable, incline shafts or slopes are sunk on the dips of the deposits, and underground mining is done on the retreat, using a room-and-pillar method.

In the course of a series of investigations on vanadium deposits of the western United States, the Bureau of Mines collected many hundreds of samples for chemical analysis. As uranium is often associated with these vanadium minerals, they were also analyzed for uranium, which was pound to be absent in a large percentage of the samples. Since the usual methods for determining uranium are laborious and time-consuming it is very desirable to have some simple qualitative test that can be applied prior to a quantitative analysis to determine whether uranium is present or absent and thus save the time and expense of applying the quantitative analysis to the large proportion of samples containing no uranium. To be acceptable, the test should be specific for cranium, sensitive enough to detect small amounts of uranium, and. simple enough to make it worthwhile to apply. The available methods for detecting uranium lacked one or more of the desired characteristics. Eventually, however, a method was worked out that satisfied all the requirements. This method is probably more specific and sensitive than the usual qualitative methods for uranium, and its simplicity and speed of application make it ideal for testing samples prior to quantitative analysis.

Graphite is a raw .material of considerable importance in both waxy and peace. Two types of graphite, classified according to particle size as flake and fines, are used, but the former is in much greater demand. The principal wartime use of graphite is in the manufacture of crucibles for melting brass and special alloys of copper and steel. Other uses in both peace and war are as lubricants, for foundry facings, and in paints, electrodes, batteries, motor and generator brushes, and a variety of other commodities. . This paper describes the operations of the Southwestern Graphite Co. of Los Angeles, Calif., which produces both flake and fine graphite from a property in Burnet County, Tex.

Chlorates and perchlorates, when mixed with certain reducing materials, may give a detonating explosive of considerable power. Concerning explosive chlorate mixtures, Guttman3/ states that they "have at all times fascinated inventors on account of the large amount of oxygen stored up in potassium chlorate, which can be given off so readily. When Lavoiser and Berthollet tried to make a chlorate powder in a stamp mill in 1788, they made a great show of it, and even two ladies were present. Unfortunately, after a certain amount of pounding the powder exploded and killed an official and the daughter of the Government commissary, who assisted at the experiments.***. It is interesting to observe how the same old mixtures are proposed over and over again with slight alterations only, in order to qualify for a patent. Potassium chlorate with some carbonaceous matter like charcoal, sugar, starch, glycerin, flour, or sometimes a vegetable or mineral oil and the like occurs again and again." This report on the bibliography of zirconium has been confined to those publications and patents that appear to be useful in the commercial development of the metal, both the malleable and the nonmalleable. The methods of production have been stressed and special attention has been given to the alloys. Compounds of importance, like the oxide and chloride, for the manufacture of the metal or of the alloys have been considered. The use of the oxide in refractories anal in the glass and porcelain industries has been omitted. The present survey is critical; that is to say, an attempt has been made to evaluate the effectiveness of suggestions made in the literature. The exhaustive work of Marden and Richy, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 186, published in 1921, has been taken as a base to start from with the intention of bringing the subject up to date with material published in the last 24 years. During this time there was considerable 'advance in the preparation of the metal and Its alloys, and in the development of new uses. On the other hand, there was little progress in the methods of decomposing the ores, so that the chapter on this latter phase is necessarily short.

In an industrial civilization, energy resources constitute the foundation of a sound economic structure (14).4/ Coal is only one source of energy, but it provides more than half the energy consumed in the United States.

Large quantities of explosives are consumed in the underground mining of ores in the Lake Superior district. Because of the recognized danger of accidentally releasing the potential highly destructive forces contained, the safes possible procedure in the transportation, storage, and use of explosives is necessary. Underground magazines recently constructed in the district give evidence of the earnest desire of the mine operators to incorporate all possible safe-guards in the storage of explosives, including a careful choice of location and arrangement in the plan of the magazine.

As recently as 1915, helium was available only in very small quantities at a cost equivalent to $2,500 per cubic foot. It was a laboratory curiocity, and its properties were of interest to a limited number of scientists (11).3/ During the past 30 years, however, helium has grown from a plaything of scientists to a factor of importance in the prosecution of the recent war. Navy blimps filled with nonflammable helium proved to be more than a match for German submarines operating in the Atlantic. American bombers were able to fly unheard-of distances to drop bombs on Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokahama, and other Japanese cities because they had been made lighter with magnesium, arc-welded in a helium atmosphere. The Army utilized helium-filled radio-sonde balloons to obtain vital information concerning weather conditions affecting D-day invasions and other military maneuvers.

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "'tiff;' meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

Analysis of the size consist of broken coal has been extended in recent years beyond the mere representation of the relative quantities of the various sizes present in a given lot of the material. Fundamental characteristics of the coal related to the process of breakage fix the distribution of sizes, and it has been found by Rosin and Rammler4/ that a relatively simple law-governs this property. Benhett5/ has described a graphical method of expressing the relationship, and by its use considerable simplification in the expression of size distribution is possible.

Among the more important raw materials now utilized for the commercial production of synthetic organic chemicals is natural 'gas. Natural gas has been used as a fuel and source of energy almost from its discovery, but its potentialities as a chemical raw material were not realized until recently. Research in the use of natural gas for Chemical synthesis received great impetus from the discovery by Brooks and Humphrey4/ in 1918 of alcohols in the diluted ?acid oil? obtained by sulfuric acid treatment of cracked petroleum distillates. Experimental data soon showed that hydrocarbons from natural gas could be converted to these same products. Laboratory methods for chlorination of natural-gas hydrocarbons, particularly of methane for the production of methyl chloride, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, and chleroform were known before that time but were not developed commercially. Methods for obtaining alcohol by oxidation of hydrocarbons derived from natural gas also were known before 1918 but had not received commercial consideration. Since 1918, and particularly during the past 15 years, the work of chemists and chemical manufacturers throughout the world has resulted in an accumulation of data regarding the reactivity of natural-gas hydrocarbons, and related hydrocarbons found in refinery gases or made synthetically. These data have been used to develop methods for converting hydrocarbons into chemical products and thus form the basis for a large and growing industry.

In Europe and in certain other foreign countries studies have been made, extending over a period of years, relating to the winning of oil from oil shale. More work has been done in these countries than in the United States, for the reason that a supply of natural petroleum has not been so generally available there as here. Information has been obtained relating to present practices in these foreign lands in the development of a shale-oil industry. It is realized that in the past there has been very little inducement to invest capital in shale-oil enterprise in the United State's because the supply of petroleum has been plentiful; however, the time possibly is not far distant when the utilization of oil shale may be cons¬idered a desirable and financially sound venture, as it may be necessary before long to augment our supply of oil with that recovered by processing shale. The data presented herein portrays at least some of the thoughts of those engaged in obtaining oil from oil, shale in Europe, and they depict some of the results thus far obtained as well as certain plans for further efforts to win oil from shale; it is hoped that those who undertake the development of a shale-treating industry in this country will find useful information in this report.

Gosgeolizdat, Moscow-Leningrad, 1941, 432 pp. This textbook was written at the suggestion of-the faculty of geophysical exploration of the Leningrad Mining Institute. It contains two parts: (1) Theory and technique, and (2) Applications to geology and exploration. The features bringing; the text up-to-date include: (a) Description of the principal modern gravimeters; particular attention to the method of simultaneous oscillation of 4 pendulums; (b) discussion of the aperiodic oscillation of torsion balances; outline of the construction of variometers Z -20 and Z-40; (c) material for aid in interpretation, such as reference-charts, formulas with their derivation, atlas of theoretical curves, and examples of interpretative calculations; (d) considerations in the planning of surveys and the densities of various rocks; and (e) detailed analysis of significant examples. These inspection standard have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of strip mines producing, bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite. This circular is a revision of the Safety Code for Strip Mining, which was prepared by the Bureau of Mines and employed as a guide for Federal inspectors. Numerous changes have been made in the original code to keep the in step with improvements in the industry. With continuing changes in mining methods and facilities some of these standards may become inapplicable and further revision may be advisable. Therefore, questions regarding these standards, and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. Few States haves laws pertaining to strip mines, but where such laws do exist it is possible that some of the standards may conflict with them. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws, but to suggest reconsideration of such laws or safety orders.

A group of organic chemicals, known as wetting agents, has been developed, primarily for use in the textile industry. These chemicals have the property of reducing the surface tension of water when mixed with it in very dilute solutions. The advantage of lowered surface tension is recognized in dust-control work, and several wetting agents, have been tried by dust-control engineers with varying degrees of success. It is well-known that certain solids, coal for instance, are extremely hard to wet with plain water because of the high surface tension of water and the water-repellent action of coal. If the surface tension of the water is reduced, it can be demonstrated that the coal can be wetted easily. This is accomplished practical and at law cost by dissolving a very small percentage of wetting agent in the water that is to be used for wetting purposes. (Care should be exercised in using a wetting agent to be sure that it will not interfere with a subsequent process.) For some time, the comparative efficiency of various wetting agents has been the subject of considerable work by dust-control men at coal mines, as well as by members of the Bureau of Mines 3/, 4/, 5/, 6/. In this connection, a number of samples of air-borne dust have been collected in the mines. With the exception of dust-control measures conditions of dust generation and dissemination were maintained as, nearly uniform as possible. Samples were collected when water alone was sprayed on the cutter bar of a mining machine; various wetting agents were then successively added to the water and more samples of air-borne dust were-collected.

These annual reviews are guide's to the current work-and publications of the Bureau but do not replace the more complete reports published under the authorship of the individual investigators on specific problems in Bureau of Mines bulletins, technical papers, reports of investigations, and information circulars and in the technical press. The Annual Report of the Director of the Bureau of Mines to the Secretary of the Interior for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 1945, summarizes the year's work on coal as follows: Coal and Coal Products The United States maintained its No. 1 industrial position in supplying fuel for war and in preparing for peace through more complete mining, improved preparation and up-grading of coal for special uses, and better utilization of coal in industrial establishments and homes.

In most underground iron mines in the Lake Superior district the active workings are at considerable depth. When additional openings into such. nines are needed, operating officials are eager to discover more efficient methods of constructing them. In recent years, openings into two mines in the district were made by the borehole method,-which employs chilled-iron shot as the cutting medium. Others were made by the churn-drill method, in which pilot hole is churn-drilled and subsequently reamed to a desired but relatively small diameter. Both methods are comparatively new and unique, at least in some phases and in their application.
