"Wien bituminous coal is burned in a hand-fired up-draft boiler used for heating purposes it has a decided tendency to produce smoke. A design of furnace and a method of firing and attendance that are satisfactory for fuels low in volatile matter, as anthracite or coke, are not necessarily Satisfactory for bituminous coals. It is therefore becoming common practice to use a special design of furnace for bituminous coals, in order to facilitate the combustion of the volatile matter and soot. This is done by (1) providing a larger combustion space to give more time for the combustion, (2) construction that will produce a better mixing of the gases and secondary air supplied over the fuel bed, or (3) keeping the gases at a higher temperature by preheating the secondary air, as may be done by surrounding them with refractory surfaces, or causing them to pass through a fuel bed of hot coke. A furnace may be built to use any or all of these methods of smoke prevention.In Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 303, Blizard5 and others give tests on a large heating boiler when burning coke, anthracite, and bituminous coal. Certair alternative furnace arrangements were used, but there was no material change in the furnace design for the various fuels. Since that time the manufacturer has made modifications in design to adapt it for use of bituminous coal, and additional tests have been made to determine how this change affected the production of smoke and the efficiency of the boiler."

"In metal and nonmetallic mineral mines during the 15-year period 1911 to 1925, 30.17 per cent of all fatalities and 16.57 per cent of all injuries were caused by falls of rock or ore from the back or roof or from the wail; 1.24 per cent of the fatalities and 11.05 per cent of the injuries were caused by rock or ore while loading at the working face; 6.66 per cent of the .fatalities and 2.49 per cent of the injuries resulted from men falling down 3 chute, winze, raise, or stope; and run of ore from chute or pocket caused 1.48 per cent of the fatalities and 1.93 per cent of the injuries.3 Hence, accidents due to falls of men and material caused. 39.55 per cent of the fatalities and 34.05 per cent of the injuries in these mines. Accident prevention can best be assisted by each company's preserving complete records of accidents classified according to cause and rate per thousand or 10,000 shifts. A systematic method of recording accidents and the employment of graphs or charts will be helpful to the company safety department in analyzing the cruses of accidents. The purpose of this publication is to analyze data on accidents caused by falls of men and material in metal -mines of the United States, and to suggest methods of preventing or reducing such accidents."

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. "The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. These coals from two different mines of the New River district both caked considerably during burning, the nut and slack more than the other. Analyses of the coal were as follows:"

Recent investigations of finely ground materials have verified Rittinger's law of crushing.4, This law states that the surface produced is proportional to the work expended in the crushing operation. Thus, for a unit of work applied to crushing quartz a definite amount of surface will be produced. Obviously, this amount of work applied to some other mineral will not produce equivalent surface. It follows that in an investigation of mill practice, where ore is being crashed, the relative crushing resistance of the component minerals must be known. In a previous investigation of the Rittinger law,5 the crashing resistance that is, the work required to produce a unit of surface - was accurately determined for quartz. The surface values were obtained by means of the rite of dissolution of quartz in hydrofluoric acid.6 If it were possible so to measure surface on other minerals the determination of relative crushing, resistance would be a simple matter; however, the results obtained on minerals other than quartz by a dissolution method were not encouraging. Moreover, if accurate values could be obtained by dissolution this method could probably never be used on a mixture of minerals such as occurs in an ore.

Many factors enter into the efficient operation of the reciprocating type of gravity concentrator. Earlier investigators who studied these factor invariably used natural (crushed ore) products for their experiments, but in the present study synthetic products were used. The variables considered were (1) specific gravity of the sand grains, (2) size of sand drains, and (3) shape of sand grains comprising the table feeds. It is recognized, also, that the percentage relationship of the different kinds of grains is a factor affecting results. This factor is variable in one group of experiments but is thereafter kept constant.

For several years the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington have been cooperating, in a study of coal tabling. The first pert of the work consisted of experiments using, one of the commercial-sized coal washing tables in the laboratories of the College of Mine. As an outgrowth of this work, hindered-settling classification has been successfully applied in the tabling of coal4, and several important improvements, mainly in the riffling, have been made in the table itself. Both of these developments have resulted in increasing the rapacity and efficiency of the coal-washing table. In order to facilitate further progress in this work an investigation has been undertaken to throw more light on the mechanism of table separation. The final separation of a table is obviously the resultant of several operations; namely, stratification, removal of the top strata or parts of them as washed coal by the cross-flowing water, and removal of the bottom strata or parts of

The modern practice of grinding ores so that often 80 per cent or more of the product is finer than 200 mesh makes it desirable to supplement sieve sizing so as to extend considerably the range of sizing. Moreover, the fact that the material finer than sieve size represents the major part of the work done in grinding emphasizes thick need in can investigation of crushing efficiency. A method based on the settling rate of particles in grater appeared to be most practical for sizing; finely ground ores. There are two possible methods of utilizing this principle: one based on free settling or sedimentation; and the other on separation by means of a rising; current of water, or elutriation. In sedimentation, mechanical entanglement causes material at the start to settle in a mass, and this persists throughout. As this feature is largely eliminated by elutriation, which permits a comparatively clean separation of the various sizes, the elutriation method was adopted.

Studies in grinding efficiencies carried out at the Midvale plant of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. and at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. Were made possible by the cooperation of these two companies with the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Mr. Alan Probert of the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. and Mr. E. C. This paper is the first of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. [Iron oxides, when reduced at temperatures below 900° form a dark gray substance, very porous bait otherwise in almost the same form as the original particles. In the temperature ire range of 1,000 to 1,100° the product is pertly sintered but still shows the outlines of the original particles. Those products are known as "sponge iron." At temperatures of 1,100 to 1,2000 the metallic iron begins to flow together and to a semifused, pasty, porous mass called a "bloom," which can he worked under a hammer to form a product similar to wrought iron; it contains slag inclusions and is too low in carbon to make steel. If the temperature is 1,300 to 1,300°, part of the iron will fuse enough to absorb more carbon. The dissolved carbon lowers the melting point and still more carbon is absorbed. The melted portion acts a flux for the unmelted metallic particles until the entire mass becomes a high-carbon fluid known as "cast iron." Sponge iron was probably the form in which the first iron was recovered from the ores. As early as the eighth century the Catlan forge3 developed into a low-shaft furnace known as the "high bloomary," in which iron eras produced in the form of a pasty mass. In 1340 the first blast furnace was built in Belgium. The greater part of the iron was made into wrought-iron blooms by crude puddling processes. Charcoal was used as the fuel until tie latter part of the 17th century when coke was used in England. In 1865 Bessemer built his first converter in. England, and within a few years the Siemen's regenerative open-hearth furnace was developed, also in England. Enormous expansion in the metallurgy of iron followed. The idea of "direct processes" for the production of iron arid steel has persisted throughout all this time. The production of steel from sponge iron has theoretical advantages over the present-day standard methods, and handreds of so--called "direct processes" have been proposed or tried during the past century.4]

"In 1928, there were 47 fatal accidents in the California petroleum industry, 14.6 per cent more than occurred in 1927 when 41 men lost their lives in the drilling, producing, manufacturing, and marketing divisions of the industry. This increase in the number of fatal accidents for 1928 has caused the first upward trend in the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry since 1923. In no other year during the 6-year period have the fatalities in any one year been greater than those for the preceding year. This fact should be given serious consideration and study by the petroleum industry, and an endeavor should be made to cause the number of fatalities again to decrease and conform to the previous gradual declining trend of the fatality curve.The following chart shows the trend of fatal accidents during the past six years:Of the 47 fatalities in 1928, 30 occurred in the drilling and producing division, 1 in the pipe line and transportation division, 14 in the refining division, and 2 in the sales and marketing division. A comparison of the number of fatalities in each division for 1927, and 1928, is given in the following table:3"

[The motor gasoline that s being marketed in the United States this summer slightly more volatile then that sold a year ago. This increase in volatility is shown by a general lowering ref the average distillation rang, of about 2°F. During the post 10 years the Bureau of Mines has made semiannual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the twentieth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have beer chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.]

"Incidental to a cooperative investigation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the International Combustion Engineering Corporation on the burning characteristics of a powdered coal and the powdered semi-coke therefrom, the U. S. Bureau of :alas has determined the relative temperatures at which rapid self-heating occurs in these two fuels. Determinations were made on various screen sizes of the two fuels. Chemical analyses on different sizes were made in the bureau's Coal Analysis Laboratory, of which H. M. Cooper is in charge. The true densities were determined b the method given in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 8.4The apparatus used in the determination of the temperatures for rapid self-heating was similar to that used by Wheeler A 10-gram sample of the fuel was placed upon a screen in a glass tube enclosed in a vertical electric furnace. The tube was surrounded with sand. One thermocouple -as imbedded in the sand and another in the fuel. Measurements of the temperatures were obtained at regular intervals with a recording potentiometer, as the furnace temperature was uniformly raised. Dry air was passed down through the fuel samples at a uniform rate of 123 c. c. per minute; the temperature of the air was substantially that of the furnace."

[In 1922 a conference of representative coal-mine operators, cable manufacturers, mining-machine manufacturers, and representatives of the United States Bur eau of Mines vas held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station, regarding suitable cables for use with permissible raining machines. This conference recommended that the Bureau investigate rubber-sheathed trailing cables in order to obtain specifications for tests leading to approval for rise with mining machines. Effective until such time as an investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers of approved mining machines to recommend cables for wise with their machines. In general the Cables recommended tentatively approved. Arrangements for the tests were completed in 1927. Concentric-type cables were investigated first, and Reports of Investigations, Serial No. 2909, covering the tests, was issued in January, 1929.]

"The petroleum refiners of the United States made rapid strides in fuel economy in 1928, when the calculated number of B. t. u. required to refine a barrel of crude petroleum was 637,000 as compared with 698,000 in 1927, a decline of 9 per cent. The major portion of this indicated increase in fuel efficiency was undoubtedly due to the gain in use of the pipe-still and the continuous process of refining as contrasted with the old batch method of distillation.,Almost without exception the new refineries are equipped with one or more pipe-stills, and many of the older plants are changing over to this type of equipment. The refineries of the Appalachian area are among the oldest and most conservative of the country, yet a number of them dismantled their old shell and cheese-box stills and installed pipe-stills in 1928.The more extensive use of the pipe-still was not the only way in which the refiners lowered their fuel requirements in 1928. The use of heat-exchangers, in which the heat from hot vapors to be condensed is used to heat the incoming cold oil, also increased in 1928, and in addition the refiners have kept abreast of the times in saving fuel through better insulation and improved burners.For the year 1928 the refiners burned as fuel the following: 46,400,000 barrels of-fuel oil; 3.362,000 short tons of coal; 114,950,000,000 cubic feet of natural gas; 77,313, 000,000 cubic feet of refinery or still gases; and 470,000 short tons of coke, in addition to a little electricity. This fuel was calculated to have produced a grand total of 582,156 billions of B. t. u., as compared with 578,784 billions B. t. u. in 1927.The total of 46,400,000 barrels of fuel oil burned represents an increase over 1927 of about 5,000,000 barrels, which made it about equal to the 1926 figure. Practically all of the refinery districts used more oil as fuel in 1928. The most important increase - over 2,000,000 barrels - occurred in the East Coast district, where greatly expanded throughput of foreign crude was instrumental in increasing fuel-oil production.The use of coal for fuel at refineries again registered a material decline, the total for 1928 of 3,362,000 short tons being 33 per cent below that of the previous year. The outstanding decrease in the use of coal in 1928 occurred in the East Coast district, where coal was probably replaced by oil. The use of coal for fuel at refineries in the States of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia declined materially in 1928; the substitute used in the majority of cases was oil burned in pipe-stills."
