In estimating the hazardous qualities of a dusty atmosphere it is frequently desirable to determine the composition of the air-borne dust. Samples collected from ledges or from the rock itself are likely to be unsatisfactory for this purpose owing to the possibilities of differential disintegration of the rock and of variations in settling rates of the different components of the minerals. It may be necessary, therefore, to collect samples of dust from the air. Samples collected from the air may be analyzed chemically, by X-ray diffraction, and by the petrogrephic microscope. Chemical methods are unsatisfactory owing to the small samples usually available and to the limitations and complexities of present methods. X-ray technique requires expensive apparatus not ordinarily available except in research laboratories. Owing to the simplicity and rapidity of petrographic examination of atmospheric mineral dusts, it was considered worthy of further study.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A testing alit through rock strata is being developed by the Mining Division of the United States bureau of Mines at Mount Weather, Va., and the tests discussed in this report were conducted there. This experimental alit in rock, constitutes a typo of laboratory where mine conditions can be closely simulated and where many of the variables likely to occur in an actual mine can be eliminated or at least controlled with reasonable effort, thus affording maximum opportunities to secure fundamental data uncomplicated by extraneous conditions. The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance and cooperation of several members of the Mining Division, particularly C. F. Jackson, chief engineer, McHenry Mosier, associate mining engineer, and G. E. McElroy, supervising engineer, mine ventilation.

Close cooperation has been maintained between the members and units of this Section and those of other Sections, J. A. Woolf and J. B. Clemmer have continued to act in an advisory capacity and R. E. Head has contributed valuable assistance in the microscopic examination of ores and metallurgical products that did not respond readily to standard treatment methods.

"INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of coal washing, the jig has been one of the most important coal-cleaning appliances. In 1935 34.7 percent of the 45,361,021 tons of clean coal produced was the product of jigging. 4/ Previous to 1928, most of the jigs used in the United States were of the piston type, with which sufficient mobility to allow stratification in bed is imparted by the reciprocating up-and-down movement of a piston in the water compartment adjacent to the screen compartment. In 1928, the Baum type of jig was introduces in this country and has since come into wide spread use. In this type, water pulsations are imparted by application and release of compressed air to the water compartment. All prior studies of the mechanism of seperating cleared coal from impurity by piston-type jigs. 5/ The same laws of settling, of course, apply to both types, piston or Baum, but the character of the separation with the Baum type may be modified more easily because of the flexibility with which air may be handled, as distinguished from the fixed action of eccentrics commonly used in piston jigs. Since no detailed studies are available to show the performance, that is, the character of the separation between coal and impurity, of the Baum type the Bureau of Mines undertook the investigation recorded in this report."

This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsater-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig. Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this typo of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

This method was developed to obviate or reduce the eyestrain consequent to the regular filar-micrometer method9/ and to save time and work. The article stated that work was in progress on a micrcprojection method for counting impinger dust samples; this article describes the method developed. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The assistance of the personnel of the ventilation Department of the Anaconda Copper Miring Co., Butte, Mont., in developing this method and particularly in suggesting a suitable material to use for the microprojector screen is sincerely appreciated. Much of the work was done in the laboratory of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. on samples collected in Butte mines during a cooperative study with this Bureau.

Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36 3/. The second resort gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 1936 4/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-37 5/.This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others."

In cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., a survey has been conducted continuously since 1929 by the Bureau of Mines to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. The New England Telephone & Telegraph Co. also has cooperated in the investigation, and tests have been made in its manholes since May 1, 1933. Yearly reports6/ on the results obtained since the beginning of the survey have been published. The method and procedure of conducting the survey in 1936 were the same as heretofore.

[Considerable research work has been done on secondary crushing and coarse rued fine grinding, and the literature on the general subject of crushing contains many references to the work of investigators on the laws governing end the factors entering into the economical production of fine materials. However, little information on primary crushing in available. The literature deals mainly with problems and practices in ore dressing, end in this field the engineer or investigations is concerned largely with the production of fine material rind the unlocking of minerals in the ore. Under such conditions close control of screen sizes of primary-crusher products is a secondary consideration and has received very little attention. The growth and development of tae nonmetallic industries have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested is the production of a minimum amount of fines and a maximum amount of a coarse Product that meets certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions tae proper type of primary-crushing equipment and a knowledge of the factors governing the operation of such equipment nest are essential to economical production of a satisfactory material.]
