Inquiries and instructional work on the determination of the number concentration of dust in atmospheres known or suspected to contain pneumoconiosis (silicosis and asbestosis) - producing particulate matter indicate a need for a description of the impinger method used by the Bureau of Mines. The impinger method consists of the collection of dust in a liquid medium and the counting under the microscope of the particles in a known portion of this liquid. The dust-collecting device is called an impinger. The dust in the air drawn through this collector at a known rate impinges at high velocity upon a smooth surface under a bubbling column of liquid. The dust is either picked up from this surface by the liquid or removed from the air as it passes through the liquid.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. In the interest of safety in underground coal mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That doors used to control ventilation (a) Shall be installed in pairs to form air locks, (b) Shall be self-closing, (c) Shall not have latches or other devices for holding them open, (d) Shall be constructed and maintained to prevent excessive air leakage through or around them, (e) Shall be fire resistant. 2. That wherever practicable the use of doors shall be limited to development openings. The Mine Safety Board is of the opinion that the best practice in coal-mine ventilation makes use of a split system employing overcasts or undercasts with doors limited as far as feasible to development openings. The distance between air-lock doors on haulageways should be sufficient to accommodate a trip or train of maximum length. Where auxiliary doors are installed to control ventilation during emergencies, they should be so placed that they can be utilized readily in case of damage to the air-lock doors.

Investigations at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station have shown that the satisfactory operation of a flame safety lamp depends not only upon proper design and assembly of the lamp but upon the kind of fuel used, and that much of the trouble experienced with permissible flame safety lamps at mines is due to the common use of motor gasolines, none of which is suitable in the present types of permissible flame safety lamps. This report gives the results of a limited study to determine what satisfactory fuels are available, the specification limits of such fuels, and to suggest modifications of assembly and care of the lamps to improve performance with any satisfactory fuel.

This paper gives the cost and describes the mining of 55 tons of nickel-bearing rock by hand methods from a prospect in southern Nevada, June 15, 1937, by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines. The geology, mineralogy, and problems related to future development also are discussed briefly. The main object was to obtain a 55-ton sample within the limited period during which funds were available; little time was available to make a first-hand detailed study of the possibility of commercial ore deposits being found. The sample was desired by the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau for experimental purposes at the Electro-Metallurgical Station at Boulder City, Nev. The term "ore" is used loosely in the following discussion to designate dike material containing nickel and copper, without consideration of its commercial value. This paper gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Humboldt County, Nev., made during the month of June, 19373/. During the field work, virtually all the mining districts in the county were visited and many data were obtained on a number of active and inactive properties. No attempt has boon made to include in this report all the properties in the various mining districts, and it should be emphasized that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no being on its merit. The report covers the location of the various mining; districts, types of deposit, information on past operations and current activity, and general information likely to be useful to operators, investors, and others interested in mining. The geology of the deposits is discussed only briefly. The names of the various mining districts mentioned in this report are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. As organized, the districts embraced largo areas with no definite boundaries, and the names have little significance.

Beside many other damaging effects of acid mine drainage, corrosion of pipe lines and pumps frequently adds much to mine operating, costs. Not only is it often necessary to install special and relatively costly acid-resistant materials, but even these may require frequent replacements. It is not unusual for ordinary steel pipe to last only a few days in some highly acid waters, while other common materials, though more resistant, frequently cast only a few weeks. In the spring of 1935, local PWA authorities offered to assign a number of persons to various problems under the direction of regular employees of the Bureau of Mines. It was believed that at least some simple tests on as many different kinds of acid-resistant pipes as could readily be obtained might produce interesting; and valuable information for the mining industry. This paper describes the tests and some results that have since been noted.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

In estimating the hazardous qualities of a dusty atmosphere it is frequently desirable to determine the composition of the air-borne dust. Samples collected from ledges or from the rock itself are likely to be unsatisfactory for this purpose owing to the possibilities of differential disintegration of the rock and of variations in settling rates of the different components of the minerals. It may be necessary, therefore, to collect samples of dust from the air. Samples collected from the air may be analyzed chemically, by X-ray diffraction, and by the petrogrephic microscope. Chemical methods are unsatisfactory owing to the small samples usually available and to the limitations and complexities of present methods. X-ray technique requires expensive apparatus not ordinarily available except in research laboratories. Owing to the simplicity and rapidity of petrographic examination of atmospheric mineral dusts, it was considered worthy of further study.

FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays or analyses for individuals or firms unless the samples are part of the ore-testing and ore-dressing investigations of the Metallurgical Division on representative ores from mining districts and of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry through published reports. All significant results obtained in this way are made public. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be examined.

The present epoch in human history has been variously described as the age of coal, of oil, of iron and steel, and of power. All agree, however, that it is a great industrial period. Power is of course the vital force in the industrial organism; but power is derived chiefly from mineral fuels or from harnessed and controlled water - also a mineral substance although usually not so classified by industry. However, the latent energy of fuels cannot work for men until it is changed to active energy by combustion and until this active energy is converted into motion. This motion is just as indispensible as the energy itself. Likewise, the latent energy of water cannot be utilized until it, too, is converted into motion; out the mechanisms and devices for converting latent energy into motion, as well as the structures in which they are operated, would not be possible without metals and other minerals. Consequently, minerals are fundamental in industrial civilization.

For several years, or from about 1932 to 1935, inclusive, the coal industry of the United States had an excellent record as to coal-mine explosions. In 1937 and in 1938 to date there has been a definite increase in the number of explosions attended by considerable loss of life and property damage. In most of these explosions one important underlying and contributing cause has been lack of sufficient (or at least efficient) ventilation to properly dilute and remove explosive gas from the mine. This increase in explosions indicates that. the lesson taught through bitter experience, many times in the not far-distant past, of the need for good ventilation is frequently being overlooked, partly because the relatively good experience of the industry in the past several years has made many mining people forgetful. Moreover mining practices are rapidly changing, and in some instances the changes are being made with little if any regard for safety. It appears, therefore, that a review of some ventilation principles and practices should be of value in preventing further disasters; this paper has been prepared with that object in mind. In coal mining the need for thorough ventilation of all underground working places is recognized by both mining practice and law; such ventilation is generally obtained by the use of fans that circulate a quantity of air much in excess of the quantity of coal produced, by weight as well as by volume. For example, in a relatively small mine producing 1,000 tons of coal per day and circulating 100,000 cubic feet of air, which is by no means abnormal, 2,000,000 pounds of coal and approximately 10,900,000 pounds of air would be moved out of the mine every 24 hours. Because of the need for adequate dilution and removal of methane issuing or likely to issue from mine strata and for removal of the carbon dioxide formed by coal and timber oxidation up-to-date coal mines usually provide an air volume which if adequately coursed not only removes these gases but also the gaseous products of the detonation of explosives (which may include carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen) and the carbon

While apparently the hysteria with regard to silicosis and other occupational diseases has largely subsided and this subject is being more carefully considered and soberly judged, it would be poor policy for any employer to maintain that the storm has ended and that he can relax and revert to conditions as they were 5, 10, or more years ago. The fact is that the plan of paying occupational-disease compensation is now in its infancy and can be expected to grow rapidly. At present, while all of the States of the Union, including the District of Columbia and excepting only Arkansas and Mississippi, have compensation acts, only the following make provision for occupational diseases to some extent or in one way or another: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia? Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis is compensable in one way or another in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, and possibly in other States. During the past few months, occupational-disease legislation (largely silicosis) has been considered in some form in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It will be surprising if comparatively comprehensive occupational-disease legislation is not on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the farsighted industrialist who has the interest of his organization at heart, if he has not already done so will immediately start to "put his house in order" by studying possible occupational disease hazards to his employees and promptly applying known remedial measures or attempting to devise such measures if none exist. Unquestionably, one of the most important of the surveys to be made relates to dust occurrence, as State laws on occupational disease are almost certain to contain provisions, on silicosis and, with almost equal certainty, the provisions of any State law are not likely to be particularly similar to those of other States.

This is one of a series of papers on placer mining in the western United States. The author has endeavored to give a general outline of the available placer deposits in Boise County, Idaho, together with a description of current practices and the recovery costs of the principal producers. The paper is based on a field examination by the author in May and June 1937. Boise County (fig. 1) is in the southwestern part of Idaho. It has a maximum length of 60 miles, a maximum width of 42 miles, and an area of approximately 1,600 square miles.

"INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of coal washing, the jig has been one of the most important coal-cleaning appliances. In 1935 34.7 percent of the 45,361,021 tons of clean coal produced was the product of jigging. 4/ Previous to 1928, most of the jigs used in the United States were of the piston type, with which sufficient mobility to allow stratification in bed is imparted by the reciprocating up-and-down movement of a piston in the water compartment adjacent to the screen compartment. In 1928, the Baum type of jig was introduces in this country and has since come into wide spread use. In this type, water pulsations are imparted by application and release of compressed air to the water compartment. All prior studies of the mechanism of seperating cleared coal from impurity by piston-type jigs. 5/ The same laws of settling, of course, apply to both types, piston or Baum, but the character of the separation with the Baum type may be modified more easily because of the flexibility with which air may be handled, as distinguished from the fixed action of eccentrics commonly used in piston jigs. Since no detailed studies are available to show the performance, that is, the character of the separation between coal and impurity, of the Baum type the Bureau of Mines undertook the investigation recorded in this report."

[The purpose of this report is to present results of tests on the effectiveness of a spray of water mist, commonly called compressed-air water blast or water blast, in reducing the concentration of dust present in the air shortly after blasting and during mucking of the blasted material. Many observations have been male on the effectiveness of such ,sprays, but published quantitative information on comparative dust concentrations with and without their use, obtained by dust-sampling methods in use in this country, is rare if not absent. Tests conducted. in South Africa about 19164/ and more recently in England5/,6/ have shown that such sprays reduce the dust concentration to very low values within a fen minutes after blasting.]
