[Utilization of small stone is recognized as one of the important problems of the lime industry. The term ?small stone' is used to designate material that is too small for calcination in tie shaft kilo. The maximum dimension A such stone rosy be placed at four inches. The introduction of any considerable quantity of stone having demensions lee: than this into the charge of a kiln impedes the draft and readers successful operation of the kiln difficult on impossible. On the contrary, the adoption of more modern methods of quarrying in recent years has increased the proportion of small material. We increasing use of underground mining of limestone has also increased the production of small stone, as blasting in the confined space of an underground stope shatters the rocs more completely than quarrying in the open. The use of the very friable limestones, such as the limestone of Florida for the manufacture of lime adds a new factor to the calcination of small stone. "Since its establishment in 1910 the Bureau of Mines has consistently recommended the rock-dusting of bituminous and lignitic coal mines as a preventive of widespread explosions. As with many other proposed innovations, the response to the bureau's recommendation has been slow; but during the past 10 years many coal mines have done some rock-dusting, even though probably fewer than 50 of the country's approximately 6,000 coal mines are thoroughly rock-dusted. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of the rock-dusting which has been done in most of the mines which have adopted the new system, numerous cases are at hand. indicating the well-founded basis of the bureau's claims regarding the effectiveness of rock-dust in stopping explosions. Very brief descriptions will be given of several cases in which explosions in coal mines of the United States are fairly definitely known to have been stopped by rock-dust during the past 5 or 6 years; in addition, several cases are cited in which explosions were stopped through the agency of rock-dust and moisture.A rock-dusted mine is one in which the floor, roof, and sides of every accessible working place, including haulage ways, airways, manways, and rooms and connections have an application of rock-dust - for instance, limestone - such that the incombustible content of the aggregate dust on those surfaces is over 60 per cent. The dust in these workings should be sampled at regular intervals to determine whether the incombustible matter in the coal-dust is less than the necessary minimum of 60 per cent; another application of rock-dust should be given when the incombustible percentage is less than 60. (As an example of thorough rock-dusting, see Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6578, 1932, which describes how rock-dusting is done in Alabama at a cost of 1.8 cents per ton of coal for a thorough application; Report of Investigations 3060, February, 1931, Rock-Dusting In A Pennsylvania Coal Mine; or Information Circular 6244, 1930, giving data, including costs, on rock-dusting in coal mines in New Mexico.)An explosion may be started by the ignition of gas, even when rock-dust is present; hence it is not correct to say that rock-dust will prevent an explosion of gas; however, if rock-dust has been applied to a working place which has present an explosive mixture of me-thane and air, and if an open light is used or a blown-out shot or an electric arc occurs, although there will very likely be an ignition and possibly an explosion, the rock-dust will certainly prevent ignition of the coal-dust nearby, and unless the general atmosphere has an explosive gas mixture, the rock-dust will stop propagation of the flame throughout the mine. In other words, if an explosion is started by gas or by coal-dust and the mine has been rock-dusted as defined, the rock-dust will prevent widespread extension of the explosion, unless the general atmosphere contains methane and air in explosive proportions.With these definitions clearly in mind, instances are now given where rock-dust has played a prominent part in the stopping of several explosions. No cases have been included where there was any reasonable doubt that rock-dust had taken a definite part in the limiting of the explosions."

Rivers in industrial and raining areas frequently are contaminated by material dumped into them causing the water to carry in suspension large amounts of silt, which subsequently is deposited alone; the banks and, ultimately on the agricultural lands if the water is used for irrigation purposes. Two common examples of this practice are the dumping of breaker refuse in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania and the dumping of tailings from the metallurgical mills in various metal-mining districts. Studies in stream pollution and its resultant problems are very important, and surveys are constantly being made by Federal and State agencies, as well as by private companies, to determine the quantity of solids actually being carried by these watercoarses. These studies require accurate sampling of the silt-carrying water to determine the amount of solids within reasonable limits. A device that will obtain reasonably accurate samples of material from silt-bearing streams is described in this circular.

In the prevention of accidents in milling operations, the proper installation and guarding of electrical and mechanical equipment, safe clearances, good housekeeping, adequate fire protection, adequate ventilation, dust and fume control, and good illumination, as well as safe practices, are essential. In the new concentrator of the Magna Copper Co., Superior, Ariz., many safeguards were incorporated and safe practices instituted to minimize accident hazards. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of these features and practices.

An improved method and apparatus for determining the impurities in helium by preconcentration and subsequent analysis by mass spectrometry are described. Preconcentration of the impurities is accomplished by passing a known volume of helium, at slightly above atmospheric pressure, through a metal coil and trap assembly immersed in liquid helium. The concentrated impurities are then analyzed by mass spectrometry. This method can detect impurities in the range of 0.01 to 600 ppm with an accuracy of better than ±0.05 ppm at the 1-ppm level. One operator can analyze 15 samples in an 8-hour day.

"Button" type ore from the Cason mine, Batesville, Ark., can be up-graded to plus-40-percent manganese by mineral-dressing procedures. A simple process including gravity concentration and. magnetic separation yielded more than 50-percent recovery of concentrates containing 38.1 to 40.6 percent manganese. These values in turn could be raised to 41.4 and 42.8 percent, respectively, upon sintering to conform to size specifications. The Bureau of Mines in the past has surveyed and tested many manganese ores and prospects in an endeavor to alleviate the shortage of manganese. The present period of emergency again emphasizes the strategic position of the metal, and manganese investigative work is being stressed to find new ore bodies and to apply newer beneficiation techniques to the known deposits.

In 2006, a total of 2,113 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 14.2% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n=1,955) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n=158) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 71.0% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.2%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.3%).

"The Phosphate Rock Market:Indications, in the fertilizer market, point to a prosperous condition, caused chiefly by the growing demand for all classes of fertilizer material in spite of a shortage of supplies. Both of these conditions have been caused by the war. The shortage in phosphate rock is being relieved as production increases, but the supply has not caught up with the demand for this spring's trade, at least. Reports from Florida are to the effect that more than half the necessary quota of laborers are at work. This may not appear to be a very good showing, but even this situation is en¬couraging because there is a larger force now at work than has been the case for some time, and it is steadily, though slowly, increasing. Some of the producing companies are conducting advertising campaigns to get laborers back to the phosphate fields and attractions in the way of better housing and living conditions are being offered.Producers are far more confident about the situation than they were two months ago, and though the shortage will not be met before the end of 1920, theme is a surplus accumulating over what is going out on existing contracts.Quotations are now being offered on all Florida rock excepting land pebble and this, it is expected, will be soon quoted.Quotations on Florida rock per ton are as follows:"

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the effects of various established and potential soil-stabilization additives to hydraulic backfill. This initial phase is an evaluation of the effect of inclusion of varying amounts of Portland cement and combinations of cement and a dispersant on the bearing strength of backfill. Results of unconfined compression tests are given for over 200 sample cylinders incorporating a fill material with cement or cement and dispersant. Inclusion of a minor amount of dispersant (0.2 percent by weight) is found to yield a significant increase in strength for 20-to-1 and leaner sand-cement mixes. An apparent optimum concentration of dispersant exists beyond which no further increase in strength is achieved. A dispersant-cement ratio of l.8- to-1 yielded a strength increase of 515 percent over the strength of untreated 40-to-l sand-cement mixes.

The Bureau of Mines studied blast-produced ground vibration from surface mining to assess its damage and annoyance potential, and to determine safe levels and appropriate measurement techniques. Direct measurements were made of ground-vibration-produced structure responses and damage in 76 homes for 219 production blasts. These results were combined with damage data from nine other blasting studies, including the three analyzed previously for Bureau of Mines Bulletin 656. Save levels of ground vibration from blasting range from 0.5 to 2.0 in/sec peak particle velocity for residential-type structures. The damage threshold values are functions of the frequencies of the vibration transmitted into the residences and the types of construction. Particularly serious are the low-frequency vibrations that exist in soft foundation materials and/or result from long blast-to-residence distances. These vibrations produce not only structure resonances (4 to 12 Hz for whole structures and 10 to 25 Hz for mid walls) but also excessive levels of displacement and strain. Threshold damage was defined as the occurrence of cosmetic damage; that is, the most superficial interior cracking of the type that develops in all homes independent of blasting. Homes with plastered interior walls are more susceptible to blast-produced cracking then modern gypsum wallboard; the latter are adequately protected by a minimum particle velocity of approximately 0.75 in/ sec for frequencies below 40 Hz. Structure response amplification factors were measured; typical values were 1.5 for structures as a whole (racking) and 4 for midwalls, at their respective resonance frequencies. For blast vibrations above 40 Hz, all amplification factors for frame residential structures were less than unity. The human response and annoyance problem from ground vibration is aggravated by wall rattling, secondary noises, and the presence of airblast. Approximately 5 to 10 pct of the neighbors will judge peak particle velocity levels of 0.5 to 0.75 in/sec as "less than acceptable" (i.e., unacceptable) based on direct reactions to the vibration. Even lower levels cause psychological response problems, and thus social, economic, and public relations factors become critical for continued blasting.

The spillage of liquid diethyl ether in rooms at floor level and 3 feet above the floor resulted in flammable vapor-air mixtures in the immediate vicinity of the exposed liquido The liquid temperature was found to decrease by as much as 35° C., with a resultant decrease in vaporization rate. A search of the literature yielded numerous references to unstable peroxide (residue) formed by the autoxidation of ether. Such residues appear to constitute an explosion hazard in the condensed state.

This report summarizes the results of the development and testing of a prototype monorail suspended bridge conveyor (MBC) system as a method of continuous haulage In underground mining applications. Included are the results of full scale, surface and underground testing of the complete MBC system. Conclusions drawn from these results, together with recommended modifications, supports the viability of the MBC system.

"INTRODUCTION During the recent war the Bureau of Mines was requested to obtain in¬formation on the temperature at which ammonium nitrate mixed with certa: contaminants would react rapidly. This information was desired in connection with an investigation of an explosion that had occurred during the evaporation, by air agitation, of volutions containing ammonium nitrate in which compressor oil that might have passed the filters was suspected of being a contaminant.During the course of this work it was found that mixtures of ammonium nitrate and zinc reacted rapidly at comparatively low temperatures: and since zinc could not positively be eliminated as a contaminant in the explosion in question, a series of tests was carried out, not only with mixtures of ammonium nitrate and compressor oil but also ammonium nitrate and zinc with and without oil. A few experiments were made with metals other than zinc.The investigation was not as extensive as might have been desired, owing to limitations -in time. The results are presented at this time in view of their current interest in connection with the Texas City disaster, in which a large quantity of ammonium nitrate detonated in the holds of two ships."

This survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of the methane emission and control problem in U.S. bituminous coal mines. The resultant data indicate that the emission rate for any given coalbed depends primarily on the coal production rate and on mine depth, as well as on the nature of the coalbed and the surrounding strata. An excellent correlation was found between (1) the methane emission rate and (2) the product of coal production rate and mine depth for the mines in the Pittsburgh, Pocahontas Nos. 3 and 4, and the Illinois Nos. 5 and 6 coalbeds. The highest total emission rates found in U.S. bituminous coal mines were as follows, in million cubic feet per day: Monongalia County, W. Va., 39; Marion County, W. Va., 30.4; McDowell County, W. Va., 13.1; Washington County, Pa., 11.9; Greene County, Pa., 11.4; Buchanan County, Va., 21.6; Jefferson County, Ala., 10.3; and Franklin County, Ill., 6.6.

In this report, the Federal Bureau of Mines presents a summary of the occurrence, properties, and uses of some natural bitumens, using the layman's or dictionary definition of bitumens - that is, naturally occurring hydro-carbons. Emphasis is on the less common solid and semisolid bitumens, particularly those occurring or used to some extent in the United States. This comprises data from many sources and references to these sources for more detail than is given in this summary. This paper was prepared primarily to answer questions about some of the less known bituminous materials. The word hydrocarbons could just as well have been substituted in the title for bitumens, but bitumens was used, since an abstract of the paper was presented at a meeting where the major emphasis was on bituminous materials. The reader will realize that coals, of which only the more unusual such as the cannel coals and torbanites are discussed in this paper, are primarily mixtures of bituminous materials and carbon. The amount of bituminous material, or volatile matter, in coals is greatest in the lower rank coals and the unusual types described in this paper, and decreases as coal rank increases. However, since no method other than destruction of the original coal substance by heat is known that will separate the volatile matter from the carbon, it appears reasonable to classify the coals with other bituminous materials, particularly since bituminous coal - the most widely used coal - by its name indicates the combination of bituminous materials and carbon.

As part of its overall program of coal-carbonization research, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals from various fields of this country. Few of the coals included in this survey are used for the manufacture of metallurgical coke, although some well-known coking coals necessarily are tested to provide comparative data, particularly on blending properties. The overall objectives of the study were given in detail in a previous report.3/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes, as distinguished from economic considerations, depends primarily on (1) the available reserves, (2) chemical composition, (3) preparation characteristics, and (4) carbonization behavior. These items are considered in selecting coal for carbonization tests.

This report describes three types of optical dust probes that have been designed, built, and tested by the Bureau of Mines. Each of the probes measures dust cloud concentrations by the attentuation of light. The first is a single-path-length probe, the second is a double-path-length probe, and the third is a single-path-length probe that employs jets of air to keep the windows of the light source and detector free from dust coating. The theory of operation and the calibration procedures for each of the probes are described. The results of the Bureaus laboratory, mine, and field tests of the probes are also reported.

The method of moving averages was found useful in assessing the nature of methane emission in coal mines. Emission rates were influenced markedly by the presence of abandoned oil and gas wells in the vicinity of the mine. Such wells appeared to increase the flow rate of methane into the mine by a factor of 2 to 30 in an active mine in the Pittsburgh coal seam.
