Shear tests were performed on several prepared samples of granular and powdery bulk materials to investigate the following parameters: Particle size and distribution, particle movement, moisture content, consolidation of material, bulk density, void ratio, porosity, volume change, and strain rate. A series of shear tests was performed with weight-percent-ratios of minus 0.185-inch tertiary sand and 1-1/2-by l/2-inch tertiary gravel mixtures, and weight-percent-ratios of minus 200-mesh limestone (rock dust) and minus 200-mesh bituminous float coal dust. A comparison was made for shear test results obtained with rectangular and circular shear cells utilizing the large and small direct shear testers. Specifically, the shear results obtained include the angle of internal friction or shear strength of the tested material under known consolidating pressures, and the kinematic angle of friction or coefficient of friction between the interface of a bulk material and a sample wall material. The experimental procedure, tests, and results are given for each parameter investigated.

The difficulties associated with wet-processing fine size coal led the Bureau of Mines to investigate a dry process for removing pyrite from coal pulverized to powerplant fineness. The dry process that was investigated consists of two cleaning steps: First, centrifugal separation is used to remove a fine, pyrite-depleted portion as a product; second, the remaining coarser, pyrite-enriched portion is taken to electrostatic separation in which pyrite is concentrated and rejected. Ball milling and Hardgrove milling were used to pulverize the coal. Three coals from the Pittsburgh seam were treated by the dry-removal process. Over 55 pct of the pyrite, which amounted to 70 pct of the available pyrite, was removed in a reject of 10 to 20 pct from one of the coals. Similar treatment of the other two coals removed about 35 to 50 pct of the pyritic sulfur, which amounted to about 70 pct of the available pyritie, sulfur from these coals. Both centrifugal and electrostatic separations were more efficient when pyrite particles were as large as possible. Separation efficiency was improved by confining the particle size of the feed to a relatively narrow range and by avoiding excessive amounts (more than 10 pct) of dust in the electrostatic range. The removal efficiency was increased with the use of stage grinding.

A study was made by the Bureau of Mines of the penetration of selected granular materials in an unconfined state by wedge-shaped tools having dimensions comparable with the dimensions of the particles composing the materials. The output force for larger particles fluctuated radically. A custom-designed integrator was used to obtain work as a function of depth of penetration in the form of smooth curves. The influence of wedge angle, depth of penetration, penetration rate, entry angle, compaction state, and particle size on the force required and the work performed was ascertained. Empirical equations describing force and work as a function of penetration were obtained for each set of experiments.

The Bureau of Mines is active in programs pertaining to solid waste disposal and land reclamation. Nine reclamation projects of mining companies and six projects of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were investigated to provide information on the procedures, costs, and results obtained from reclamation projects of bituminous coal-waste disposal areas. Refuse disposal costs of mining companies ranged from 9 to 28 cents per ton-mile, and quantities disposed of ranged from 600 to 4,500 tons per day. Spreading and compacting the refuse at the dump site ranged from 3 to 20 cents per ton. Cost of covering with soil and planting ranged from $750 to $1,646 per acre. Total costs of reclamation for the Pennsylvania projects ranged from about $1,800 to more than $15,000 per acre. Refuse preparation costs ranged from $772 to $5,550 per acre. Soil covering and planting costs ranged from $1,083 to $5,086 per acre. The best results were obtained by soil preparation and conditioning prior to planting. The type and depth of soil and effect of climate were also factors.

As one of its projects for degasification of major panels of coal prior to mining within them, the Bureau of Mines conducted methane emission studies during development of a set of three headings 1,800 feet in a major coal panel (2,700 by 3,500 feet) which had been completely isolated by sets of main headings for 12 months in the Federal No. 2 mine (Pittsburgh coalbed) in northern West Virginia. Similar emission studies were conducted in the development of two sets of main headings in virgin coal areas nearby. Comparing the two sets of data indicated that the isolated coal panel had been degasified by approximately 70 percent.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to quantify microphone response variations that could result when the microphone is worn by a worker, as with a personal noise dosimeter, and to suggest an optimum placement and orientation of the microphone for noise exposure measurements. Previous studies have shown no significant variations in a diffuse field. This investigation, therefore, was conducted in the free-field conditions of an anechoic chamber using an anthropometric dummy as a subject, and broad band noise as the acoustic stimulus. This investigation established that, in a free field, the wearer's body does significantly affect microphone response; the response variations are a function of azimuth, and location and orientation of the microphone. Results suggest that locating the microphone on top of the subject's shoulder, oriented parallel to the body axis, should yield data comparable to that obtained using a sound-level meter.

Enthalpies of formation of three sodium titanates were determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry, The values obtained for formation from the elements at 298.15° K are -370.9±0.5 kcal/mole for Na2TiO3, -832.1±0.9 kcal/mole for Na2Ti307, and -1,510.9±1.7 kcal/mole for Na2Ti6013. Tables of enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation are given as a function of temperature both from the elements and from the component oxides for Na2Ti03 and Na2Ti307.

The attention of this group was focussed on four through-the-earth communication systems that are presently of high interest to the U.S. Bureau of Mines; four systems for providing operational/emergency communications on the working sections of coal mines, indeed up to the very face of the section. The systems are: uplink-data, downlink-voice, sidelink-call alert coded page, sidelink-roof bolt voice page. Each of these systems makes use of the mine overburden as the signal transmission medium, as opposed to the guiding wires, cables, and tunnels treated by the operational communications working group. Each of these systems satisfies one or more of the Bureau's objectives for mine communications systems; namely • reliable links for monitoring the mine environment under both operational and emergency conditions. • reliable links for communicating with miners during emergencies. • special links for increasing the efficiency of day-to-day operations of the mine. Each of these systems has been successfully demonstrated on a limited experimental basis, and prototypes of all these systems are installed and operating in the USBM experimental mine in Bruceton, Pa. Each of these systems must now be optimized regarding its performance, and engineered for practical routine application to the working sections of actual operating coal mines, particularly those of the room and pillar type. This optimization and engineering must take place subject to the principal constraints listed by Howard E. Parkinson in his Workshop paper entitled, "Objectives and Constraints of Through-the-Earth Electromagnetic Communications Systems'' and enumerated below. • Depth of Mine Overburden • Overburden Conductivity • Electromagnetic Noise In and Above Mines • Limited In-Mine Electrical Energy (Stationary or Man Carried) During an Emergency • Intrinsic Safety for In-Mine Equipment • Practical and Rugged Equipment for Use Under Both operational/Emergency conditions • Severe Weight Limitations for Man Carried Equipment • Reasonably Low Costs Especially for Man Carried Equipment Part II of this paper provides a brief description of each system, while Part III summarizes the present status of developments related to these systems and some recommendations for future work needed to advance these systems to the practical application stage.

In 1969, new coal mine health and safety legislation was enacted in the United States. As a result of this legislation, the Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines has carried out communications research aimed at developing whole mine communications for increased safety and efficient operation. The research has advanced and many promising results are now being demonstrated to the mining industry. However, there remains a challenge to further improve wireless communications within the mine workings, and through the overburden above the workings. The objectives for future research and development will be discussed, together with the physical and operational constraints that new mine communication systems must face.

Data obtained from mine ventilation pressure and quantity surveys are required to accurately diagnose ventilation problems, project future air quantity needs, and to locate conditions adversely affecting the efficiency of a mine ventilation system. A method for making mine ventilation pressure surveys with aneroid altimeters was presented in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7809, and a description of field calculation technique is presented. This report supplements Information Circular 7809 by developing the information obtained during a mine ventilation pressure survey into a single equation suitable, with appropriate modification, for use with desk-top calculators and digital computers. The equation can be used to calculate the ventilation pres sure from the base station to any underground station, or between any two underground stations, and can be programed for semiautomatic sequential calculation using a desk-top calculator. An example of application to a programed desk-top calculator is provided in the appendix.

Coal, gas, and oil in many geological formations of the Eastern United States are intimately associated but have traditionally been recovered independently of each other. Oil and gas wells, however, are often spaced sufficiently close to cause the subsequent loss of up to 50 percent of the recoverable coal in the form of pillars or barriers left for mine safety purposes. A long-range planning technique was devised for exploiting oil and gas wells simultaneously with the mining of coal to recover the maximum fuel potential of the formations. Planned plugging of oil and gas wells, determined partly from production predictions via decline curve analysis, is coordinated with a mine development plan to achieve maximum coal recovery and reduce overall production losses of gas and oil due to plugging of the wells.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes an investigation of the amount of respirable dust adhering to the surfaces of seven run-of-face broken bituminous coals. The number of respirable-size (0.9 to 10 micrometers) particles adhering to the run-of-face coal ranged from 1011 to 1012 particles per pound of coal and was approximately inversely proportional to the mean lump size of the coal sample, otherwise it did not vary significantly with the coal seam, mining method, or winning machine. Based on these results, about 16 lb of ordinary run-of-face broken coal would have enough respirable-size adhering dust to contaminate 1,000,000 ft3 of air up to the 2 mg/m3 level, if this adhering dust should become airborne. Although brief studies here suggest that a negligible amount of new respirable dust is formed due to fracture of the broken coal during dropping, dislodging of old adhering particles during secondary handling operations is a potentially dangerous source of airborne respirable dust.

APPENDIX B - DEVELOPMENT OF FOAM-CONCRETE SLURRY MINE SEALANT 1. Introduction This appendix describes the results of an experimental development and laboratory evaluation of foam-concrete as a rapid setting, lightweight, self-supporting mine sealant material. Foam concrete, otherwise known as Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete whose structure consists of air bubbles held together by a hardened cement mortar. Its principal applications are found in roofing, insulation, shock absorbing, and backfill. The air bubbles in foam concrete are formed either by chemical reaction in the wet, placed mortar, or by introducing a stable foam into the mortar during mixing. The mortar is usually a cement slurry with fine sand or fly ash as filler. Our attention focused on preformed foam concrete, since this is most adaptable to field applications. Equipment is available,* which simultaneously mixes and pumps a slurry of foam concrete. Such a slurry can be produced at a rate of up to 50 yards/hr and has been pumped in a 2-inch-diameter hose 1000-feet horizontally and 250 feet vertically up without significant bubble deterioration. The objective of this Bureau of Mines publication Is to present a nomograph that provides a fast, convenient method for estimating hydrocarbon lease bonus bids for offshore acreage in the Gulf of Mexico. Discounted cash flow analyses were computed from a model derived to show the costs necessary to explore, acquire, develop, produce, and abandon a 5,000-acre block of offshore acreage, and the estimated income from the sale of the hydrocarbons produced from the block. The range of the variables in the financial analyses used to construct the nomograph are prices of oil, $2.50 to $5.00; recoverable hydrocarbon reserves, 44,651,476 to 127,575,645 barrels; and discounted cash flow (DCF) rates of return, 5.0 to 57.2 percent. A total of 1,234 sets of DCF data were used to construct the nomograph. The range of bonus bids shown on the nomograph is from 2 to 90 million dollars ($400 to $18,000 per acre).

Introduction The fields of an infinite line source in the presence of a conducting half-space have been examined by Wait and Spies (1971). In any real communication link using a current-carrying cable for the transmitting antenna, the cable is of finite length. Here we examine the fields of a finite length cable carrying a constant current in the presence of a homogeneous conducting half-space. The constant current assumption is valid at sufficiently low frequencies when an insulated cable is grounded at the end points (Wait, 1952; Sunde, 1968). Here we examine both surface and buried cables since both downlink and uplink communication links are of interest. Also, we examine both frequency and time solutions since either CW or pulsed communications may be used. Finally, it is necessary to include both magnetic and electric field solutions since reception could be with either loops or dipoles. Since the finite cable solution is more complicated than both the infinite line source and the short dipole solutions, we explore under what conditions a cable appears to be either infinitely long or very short. Some special cases, such as- the low frequency limit, permit analytical solutions which exhibit the dependence on various parameters, such as cable length, quite clearly. So far as the propagation of electromagnetic waves is concerned, an underground tunnel behaves like a pipe or hollowed waveguide. Waves propagate in this tunnel with a low attenuation only if their frequency is higher than a so-called critical frequency which depends on the shape and mostly on the cross -dimensions of the tunnel and which value is in the neighbourhood of several tenths of MHz. However, when a metallic conductor is stretched along the gallery the electromagnetic characteristics of the latter are considerably modified and the effect of the cut-off frequency disappears; this is due to the fact that the gallery equipped with such a conductor works like a coaxial cable where the conductor serves as the outward conductor and the wall of the gallery as the return conductor. This is the principle of the monofilar waveguide cable which has been perfectly studied by Gabillard. Two mean characteristics of the monofilar mode are as follows: first of all, when the cable is suspended in the middle of the cross section of the gallery, the electromagnetic field occupies all the space between the wire and the walls of the gallery. When the wire is close to the wall, the electromagnetic field tends to become concentrated between the wire and the wall, with the consequence that, with the given monofilar mode power, the aerial of a receiver standing somewhere in the tunnel will capture a weaker and weaker signal. Secondly, owing to the fact that the mode of monofilar propagation uses the ground as return conductor, its power of propagation is considerably diminished; the closer the wire is to the wall the higher the attenuation, for only a very small part of the wall is utilized as return conductor. To cover great distances, everything else being equal, two or more conductors must be placed in the gallery. If the distance between two conductors of a cable is much smaller than the distance between one or other of the conductors and the walls; or again if one of the conductors surrounds the others and forms a screening, two sorts of modes appear: on the one

This guide was written to furnish the coal industry with a description of techniques, instruments, and clues on how to find abandoned oil and gas wells that have penetrated coal seams. The report includes specific information on searching techniques currently in use by several coal mining companies, gas-transmission companies, and waterflood operators, as well as information on State agencies responsible for the enforcement of laws and the preservation and distribution of data pertaining to the drilling, development, and abandonment of oil and gas wells. Comparative tests were performed with several commercial electronic metal detectors to determine the feasibility of using them to aid in the search for abandoned wells and to determine the instrument most suited for that particular use. The role of methane detectors to locate abandoned wells is described, including a case history. Tests were made to develop an efficient procedure to follow in systematically searching an area for metallic clues or hydrocarbon evidence to abandoned wells. The guide describes, in detail, a search sequence, including the collection of basic data, preparation of the selected area, and the physical search. Methods are given for evaluating the results.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effect of up to 1 wt-pct of copper and silicon on the heat treatment response and hardness, tensile, and impact properties of hot-rolled medium-carbon steels. The steels were prepared by induction melting and fabricated into plates by forging and rolling. The tensile strength of 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels containing 0.3 wt-pct silicon was affected significantly by copper in both the hot-rolled and heat-treated (600° C) conditions, whereas the tensile strength of the 0.3-wt-pct carbon steels was less affected. A 600° C treatment was considered optimum as a post-rolling treatment to strengthen the steels by copper precipitation. Strengthening of 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels by silicon was reduced by increasing copper contents.. Optimum impact strengths occurred at about 0.3 wt-pct silicon in 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels containing 0.6 and 0.8 wt-pct copper. The impact strengths were lowest for 0.2-wt-pct carbon steels containing over 0.8 wt-pct copper and greater than 0.3 wt-pct silicon, especially in the heat-treated condition. Copper and silicon solutes and copper precipitates strengthened the steels. This effect was augmented slightly by strengthening through grain refinement by these solutes.

This report describes the procedures used by the Bureau of Mines for obtaining attitudes of joints surveyed with a borescope in inclined boreholes. An algorithm for computing the dips and azimuths of the observed joints is presented. The algorithm is used to solve an example problem. A computer program based on the algorithm is listed. It is hoped that the procedures described here will be useful in treating large quantities of data obtained from comprehensive borehole surveys.
