INJURY DATA and experience at coal mines in the United States for 1956 and 1956 are presented in this publication with a minimum of interpretation and comment because of the numerous tables required to afford detailed comparisons between the 2 years. Corresponding table., for 1955 and 1956 follow in consecutive order under the following general sections: (A) General injury experience: Tables I to II: contain current data on number of fatal and nonfatal injuries, frequency and severity rates, and average severity. (B) Selected injury data: Tables 12 to 77: Contain current data on causes of injuries, distribution of injuries by part of body injured, clays of disability, extent of hand and machine loading, experience by employment and production groups, and various other operating factors and physical conditions related to the occurrence of injuries at the Nation's coal mines. (C) Injury experience, by States: Tables 78 to 87: Contain data on injuries, injury rates, employment, cause of injuries, aid severity rates by States. (D) Major disasters: Table 88: Contains data on major disasters, 1947 -56. A major disaster is defined as a single accident in which, or as the result of which, five or more persons are killed instantly or died at any time thereafter. (E) Historical coal-mine-fatality experience: Tables 89 to 93: Contain data on fatalities and their causes at bituminous-coal and anthracite mines from the earliest records through 1956.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act. (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) became law April 5, 1944, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program, bulletins were published on pressure hydrogenation.3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 anal oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to either the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material will be presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom Patents. III. Other Foreign Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1953 and 1955.

This paper describes all occurrences of barite in Arizona that were known or reported to the authors. The history, ownership, production, and geologic setting are discussed for most of the deposits. The uses and specifications of product grades are briefly discussed. Seventy-five deposits were examined in 9 of the 14 counties of the State. The descriptions are given under county headings. No occurrences were reported in the four northeastern counties of Coconino, Navajo, Apache, and Greenlee, nor in Santa Cruz in the southern part of the State. From about half of the deposits examined, 55 samples were taken; of these, 45 were for chemical analysis, and 8 larger samples, ranging from 100 to 350 pounds, for beneficiation tests. A 30-ton bulk sample was taken for pilot-plant tests. Bench-scale flotation tests of the eight samples employing several different procedures and reagent combinations yielded marketable-grade barite products with barite recoveries ranging from 60 to 97 percent. Five of the samples contained enough fluorspar to warrant its recovery. Acid-grade concentrates, which accounted for fluorspar recoveries of 45 to 70 percent, were obtained from three of these ores. Batch laboratory tests of a representative portion of the 30-ton bulk sample revealed that acid-grade fluorspar and high-grade barite concentrates could be recovered. Results of the laboratory and continuous pilot-plant tests of this ore will be presented in a separate report.

RECORD production of portland cement, crushed limestone, marble, lime, and clays highlighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1959. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite, and third in output of iron ore, scrap mica, and native asphalt. Alabama's mineral industry was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and iron ore, which accounted for 51 percent of the total value of production in 1958 and 1959. Other important industries were cement manufacturing, petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron Division of United States Steel Corp. (coal;. iron ore, limestone, lime, and magnesium compounds), Southern Cement Co. Division of American-Marietta Co. (cement, lime, limestone, and miscellaneous clay) , Woodward Iron Co. (coal and iron ore), Alabama Power Co. (coal), and Ideal Cement Co. (cement lime, and miscellaneous clay) .

This report is the 23d in a series summarizing research and technologic work by the Federal Bureau of Mines on coal and related investigations; it is the fifth report to be issued on a calendar-year basis.2/ Publications by Bureau personnel in 1958 are cited;3/ in addition work in progress during the year is briefly described. To conserve our reserves of coal the Bureau of Mines conducts a program concerned with the development of fundamental information on coal characteristics and behavior, and the improvement of technology related to its production and utilization. The ability to anticipate and meet future demands for coal depends on a number of factors: (1) Knowledge of reserves from a stand- point of both quantity and quality; (2) the development of improved mining methods, health and safety measures, and preparation techniques that will insure its most efficient exploitation; and (3) knowledge of the controlling factors in efficient use of coal in combustion, carbonization, gasification, direct and indirect hydrogenation, and other new processes. The Bureau is concerned with each of these areas.4/,5/

THIS INFORMATION CIRCULAR contains 1956 and 1957 injury experience and employment data for metal mines in the United States and Alaska. Unlike previous publications, this report covers only metal mining and contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and mills reporting voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines on an annual basis. Injury and employment data for the nonmetal industries, which from 1911 through 1955 were published in the same series as the metal industries, for the first time will be published separately as an information circular entitled "Injury Experience in the Nonmetal Industries, 1956 and 1957." The Bureau of Mines is authorized to make requests for injury and employment data, and the information submitted by operators of metal mines and mills is a step forward in promoting safety in the metal-mining industry. Every effort has been made to make this coverage as complete as possible.

THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

This Bureau of Mines report presents information on the origin, collection, movement, and consumption of iron and steel scrap in California and Nevada. As far as practicable, information is presented on a grade basis. The iron and steel scrap industry in California is important from the standpoint of employment, economic essentiality, and dollar value. About 16,000 persons are either directly or indirectly employed on a full- or part- time basis in the collection, preparation, and sale of iron and steel scrap in California; in 1957 about 70 percent of the tonnage of products of California steel mills, valued at $271 million, was derived from scrap; the value of scrap in 1957 ($117 million) is about $10 million greater than the value of portland cement produced in California that year. The iron and steel scrap industry in Nevada is small.

THE DOMEST[C bituminous coal and lignite industry remained fairly steady in 1959 compared with 1958. Although mechanization continued to expand and production increased slightly, consumption, average value, exports, and employment decreased. The percentage of underground production mechanically loaded, the percentage of total production mined by stripping, and tonnage per man per day were at their highest levels. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in 1959-412 million tons-was 0.4 percent greater than the 410.4 million tons produced in 1958. Production was retarded in 1959, largely owing to the steel strike and reduced exports.

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. TONNAGE of natural abrasives sold or used in the United States in 1959 increased 12 percent. Artificial abrasives produced in the United States and Canada jumped 24 percent. Imports, exports, and reexports of abrasive materials also showed gains. Sales of grinding wheels were up 33 percent and coated abrasives 17 percent. AN ADEQUATE, dependable, and continuing supply of raw materials is indispensable to tile the United States and its industries in meeting the needs of an expanding Population, a rising standard of living, and the national security. The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country's mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation's devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

IN THE HALF-CENTURY that has passed since the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau's scientists, engineers, and other personnel have helped significantly in improving health and safety in the mineral industries and have contributed substantially in conserving the Nation's mineral resources through improved techniques in the mining, treatment, and use of mineral commodities. From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.

This report is one of a series of Bureau of Mines Information Circulars dealing with mining methods and costs throughout the United States. It describes drifting, crosscutting, and raising operations at several mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, Shoshone County, Idaho. Ore bodies in the Coeur d'Alene district are generally in steeply dipping tabular ore zones, are irregular in shape, erratic in occurrence, and have been extensively mined along the strike and down dip. Because of the extended attitude of the deposits a great deal of development work is required. Drifting, crosscutting, and raising methods are described in this report. Shaft sinking is the subject of another report in the same series.

The technological and economic pattern of the U. S. mining industry has undergone a rapid and continuing change since World War II. To provide realistic up-to-date cost data and to disseminate knowledge of technical developments, the Federal Bureau of Mines, with the cooperation of individual mining companies, is presenting a series of mining methods and costs reports similar to those it issued before 1939. Shaft sinking has always played an important part in mine development and [ration] and is an appropriate subject for this series of reports. "This study by the Federal Bureau of Mines was confined to pillaring with continuous mining machines and to mines where total extraction is practiced. Many different conditions and practices in as many coalbeds as possible in Pennsylvania were observed.Pillar extraction or pillaring can be the most productive part of coal mining if done properly; but it also can be the most dangerous if done improperly.Because of the need for more careful planning before and caution during pillaring, many mining companies resort to the undesirable practice of stumping or hogging of pillars with subsequent unnecessary waste of valuable natural resources. Pillaring can be done at reasonable cost and safely, as proven at many mines where complete extraction is practiced and enviable cost and accident records are maintained.Although continuous mining machines are bulky and sometimes difficult to maneuver, they have been used with great success in pillaring. Occasionally, however, a machine is caught, or men are injured by a fall during pillar recovery. This Bureau survey was conducted to ascertain how safe and successful pillaring (especially the removal of final stumps in lifts or the final stump of a pillar), is accomplished in some mines, while others have considerable difficulty under similar conditions.The Bureau hopes the information to be presented in this publication will prove beneficial to those who wish to recover more pillar coal and to improve their accident record during such procedures."

The breakage of rock by explosives depends largely on the ability of an explosive to transfer its stored potential energy to the rock as strain en- ergy. Therefore, the relative rock-breaking abilities of explosives can be determined indirectly by determining the relative amounts of strain energy transferred to the rock at the time of detonation. This report presents experimental data on the strain energy contained in explosion-generated strain pulses in a granite gneiss. Six explosives were tested. The scaled total radial strain energy E/W flowing outward through a spherical shell of scaled radius R/W1/3 surrounding the point of detonation was found to follow an exponential decay propagation law of the form Analysis of the data showed that the intercept parameter H depended upon the type of explosive used but that the absorption coefficient B was practi- cally independent of the type of explosive. Comparison of the intercept pa- rameter H and the calculated energy of the explosive showed that the percent- age of explosive energy transferred to the rock increased linearly as the ratio of the characteristic impedance (product of density and propagation velocity) of the explosive to that of the rock increased toward unity. From 5 to 9 percent of the calculated total energy released by the explosive was transferred to the rock as radial strain energy.

"The Federal Bureau of Mines serves the mining industry by approving equipment that is designed to prevent explosion, fire, shock, or toxic hazards in mines when such equipment is used and maintained in a proper manner, through research, consultation, testing, and inspection, the Bureau studies machinery and component parts submitted by manufacturers and others. Before receiving the Bureau's approval as permissible for safe use in mines, equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's various permissibility schedules. An important phase of the Bureau's research is the testing of diesel engines.Mobile diesel-powered equipment can be used safely in underground noncoal mines and tunnels when mechanical ventilation is provided to dilute and remove the exhaust gas and to replenish oxygen in the underground atmosphere. Safe ventilation is determined by suitable tests of each engine used in a diesel machine. This ventilation cannot be predicted safely, accurately, and economically from any general empirical relationship.In determining safe ventilation, the quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen generated by a diesel engine must be ascertained. These quantities are related to the displacement of the engine, its speed of operation, the design of the combustion chamber, and the fuel:air ratio needed to produce useful power. At overrich fuel:air ratios, all diesel engines generate excessive quantities of toxic carbon monoxide and smoke. The results of engine tests are used to determine a maximum fuel-injection rate at or below which carbon monoxide can be controlled by a reasonable ventilation and smoke is essentially eliminated. Toxic oxides of nitrogen are related to fuel:air ratio and the design of the combustion chamber. Their concentration in the exhaust cannot be controlled by engine adjustments, and each engine appears to have individual characteristics concerning formation of these oxides. Production of oxides of nitrogen frequently is the most important factor in determining safe ventilation."

The practice of using two or more main ventilating fans is common at large coal mines throughout the coal-mining industry. To assure adequate and efficient ventilation at may mines, such multiple-fan systems are necessary. The hazards associated with interrelated ventilating currents if a fan fails are controversial, and to date little effort has been made to study this specific problem and to determine corrective measures. The obvious questions are: 1. Is there a hazard? 2. Under what circumtances does it exist? 3. How serious is it? 4. What are corrective measures? Most members of the mining fraternity agree that reduced quantities of air and changed airflow patterns introduce potential hazards, especially where gaseous conditions exist when mechanized methods are used in concentrated mining 0 The seriousness of the hazard depends on the ease with which methane accumlates in face areas or haulage roads, the quantity of methane in workedout areas, and the extent to which reversed air currents interfere with escape and recovery operations after mine fires or explosions. This report presents information obtained by examination and investigation of manganese deposits in northeastern Oregon during May and June 1954 and April 1957. Maps, assays, and other examination data are presented on 10 manganese deposits -9 in Baker County and 1 in Grant County. Included among these deposits are all those that have undergone substantial exploration or have a record of production. Seven of the Baker County deposits occur as characteristically small, irregular pods and lenses in argillite. The remaining Baker County prospects are [marily] narrow, vein-type occurrences in schist. The Grant County occurrence in greenstone and serpentine. All the deposits are composed of various manganese oxides, intermixed with abundant quartz and chert.
