This paper describes how knowledge of the orebody morphology and ore morphology can be used to optimize the planning, mining, and metallurgical output from an open pit copper mining operation, such as to significantly increase the stability of the whole value chain process, and increase the reliability and value of the process outputs. In the case under consideration, the orebody contains both copper and cobalt. This in itself provides a challenge, in that the two metals do not occur in consistent ratios across the orebody as a whole. Furthermore, mineralogical differences within the orebody have a significant impact on plant performance in terms of throughput rates, acid consumption, and recoveries. In order to stabilize and optimize the plant performance, it is necessary to firstly have a complete understanding of the geometallurgical factors that affect performance, and then to have a sound knowledge of how these are distributed within the orebody. These models then inform the mine planning strategy that optimizes cash flow and NPV, and also allow the development of a stockpiling strategy that not only stabilizes the plant, but also allows variations in the plant feed according to ore type and grade in volatile price scenarios. Integral to the realization of these opportunities is the establishment of an appropriate measuring, control, and reconciliation system, customized to the optimization objectives. The paper describes how all of these factors and strategies can be integrated to produce optimal value from the orebody through to final dispatched product. It also shows the significant value that can be released through such an approach.

Zincor experienced significant losses of metallic zinc to dross during the melting of zinc cathode plates. In this study five factors affecting the formation of dross are identified from literature. Dross from both the plant and that produced in the laboratory is characterized using XRD. An empirical model, based on laboratory-scale investigations, was developed to quantify the effect these factors on their own or in combination with each other has on the amount of zinc loss to dross. The predictive capability of the model is evaluated based on the laboratory-scale investigations. Predictions are made on the effects that heat treating the cathode plates prior to melting, increasing the cathode plate thickness, washing and drying prior to melting, and loading the furnace in a controlled manner have on the amount of zinc loss to dross. Optimum Coal Mine comprises numerous defunct, active, and future mining sections. The mine is primarily a large opencast coal mine; however, underground mining activities will be increasing steadily over the next five years. Opencast and underground mining activities have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. To ensure that the mine will be able to continue with its mining operations in the catchment, the extent of this impact requires that substantial intervention and mitigation measures need to be implemented to ensure the environmental integrity and economic use of the catchment's water resources. In developing a sustainable long-term mine water management strategy, numerous scenarios had to be analysed. The various scenarios are a combination of water and land management activities. The main components of the mine's integrated water management strategy include: ? Management of water recharge by continual and appropriate rehabilitation of disturbed land ? Beneficial re-use of impacted mine water for coal plant process water and mining operations ? Reclamation and desalination of remaining excess impacted mine water to potable standard. From the mine's long-term water balance, it is evident that the continued implementation of numerous water management actions is required to mitigate the water resources impact in a sustainable manner. In addition, the installation of a water reclamation plant at Optimum Coal Mine (15Ml/day) is a key step for the mine to achieve a zero impact target.

A procedure for designing an optimum pit to yield maximum profit is described. The volume in which a possible pit is considered is divided into discrete blocks, each of which is assigned an economic value equivalent to its worth as a block of mineable material. The profitability of a pit can then be generated by summing the blocks within the pit. The optimizing procedure starts at the surface level and proceeds downwards level by level, to obtain the optimum pit at each level. The method makes use of the fact that an optimum pit at a particular level must be completely contained in any optimum pit at a lower level. Procedures for generating block costs, and pits with various slope angles under the restriction of complete block removal are considered briefly. The main description is of the theory of the method and the computer program based on this. The method is applicable to any type of mineral deposit, the only requirement being that the orebody should be represented accurately by a block model.

"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

It is interesting to note that, when the Technical Programme Committee-Mining first decided on this particular topic for a colloquium, the proposed title was different in that it used the words 'rising price of gold'. The very fact that the title was reworded to use the words 'fluctuating gold price' highlights the problem that faces the South African gold-mining industry.

This motion was adopted unanimously. CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT 1968/69 At Mr Kirchner's request, Mr. R. C. J. Goode took the Chair during the presentation of the Chairman's Annual Report. (This report was published in the August 1969 issue of the Journal.) OFFICE BEARERS AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS FOR THE YEAR 1969/70 The Chairman announced that the outgoing Committee had elected the following office bearers for the coming year: Chairman: N. A. Honnet; Vice-Chairman: J. N. Saunders; Immediate Past Chairman: J. G. Kirchner. The Chairman then read a letter from the scrutineers reporting that the following had been elected to the Committee: M. S. Grobler, W. R. Lawrie, L. O. W. Leimer, A. T. Lewis, R. S. Pearson, T. Zadkin. The Chairman thanked the scrutineers for their services, and congratulated Messrs Lawrie, Leimer and Zadkin on their re-election and Messrs Grobler, Lewis and Pearson on their election to the Committee. The Chairman announced that he had heard, with regret, that Mr. T. Zadkin would be leaving the O.F.S. at the end of August, 1969. Mr Zadkin had served on the Committee continuously since the inception of the O.F.S. Branch and records showed that he had only failed to attend three General Meetings in over nine years. The Chairman expressed the gratitude of the Branch for Mr Zadkin's invaluable services to the Institute, congratulated him on his well earned promotion and wished him well in his new position. INDUCTION OF CHAIRMAN The Chairman introduced Mr N. A. Honnet to the meeting by briefly outlining his past career and, after congratulating him on his election, called upon him to take the Chair. In congratulating the out-going Chairman on a very successful term of office, Mr Honnet said that due to the absence of many Committee Members for a large portion of the year Mr Kirchner had carried a heavy burden, and he moved a vote of thanks and appreciation for Mr Kirchner's efforts. This was carried unanimously. GENERAL BUSINESS There were no points raised under this heading. MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS The Chairman called on Mr W. R. Lawrie to give his talk on aspects of the Mining and Metallurgical Congress recently held in Britain. This presentation was illustrated with photographic slides and proved of great interest to Members. Mr D. D. Waterman proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Lawrie and the Chairman then asked Mr R. C. J. Goode to contribute to Mr Lawrie's address. Mr Goode thanked Mr Kirchner for his efforts during his very successful term of office and congratulated the in-coming Chairman and Vice-Chairman on their election. He then gave a brief talk on aspects of the Congress not dealt with in Mr Lawrie's address. These included the industry's requirements of graduates, the necessity of their rapid advancement and the desirability of sending such young men to attend future Congresses. Mr Goode announced that two symposiums will be sponsored by the Institute next year, one on Tunnelling and the other on Open Cast Workings.

TALKS The Chairman called first on Mr D. E. Couperthwaite to present his paper on 'Heavy media separation' and then on Mr A. F. Leger to present his paper on 'Engineering plastics'. Both presentations, which were illustrated with diagrams, proved of great interest to all members. A vote of thanks to both speakers was proposed by Mr T. Zadkin. Meyer was in the chair. METALLURGISTS AND COMPUTERS An address delivered at the Annual General Meeting of the O.F.S. Branch by Prof D. D. Howat. Most men who remain in mining and metallurgy like their jobs. There are many times when you say to yourself or to your wife - 'Anybody can have my job - if they want it'. You feel so fed up and frustrated everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.

TALK ON ROCK MECHANICS The Chairman called upon Mr J. W. Wilson to address the meeting on the subject of the practical applications of rock mechanics to mining. Mr Wilson used a slide projector to present his subject in a most interesting and instructive manner which eventually resulted in much useful discussion taking place. The Chairman then called upon Mr A. von Holdt to thank the speaker. CLOSURE After thanking the speakers, the Chairman thanked members and visitors for their attendance and closed the meeting at about 10 p.m., after which refreshments were served.

Commencing with the Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) conclusions, the Orapa 3 process design evolved through a phase of value-engineering studies. An overall re-evaluation of the originally proposed process design was necessary both in order to address the interim increase in target throughput from 9.8 Mtpa to 12 Mtpa as well as to increase capital efficiency. In the interests of clarity, the PFS process design for Orapa 3 has been omitted from this paper, as it is no longer relevant. Recognition is however due to those engaged in earlier phases of the Orapa 3 project with respect to fundamental mass-balancing modelling; and ore and diamond characterization, which fanned the basis for the process design that has evolved from feasibility study activities.

The use of dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) technology in the mining industry has been developing rapidly in the past decade. In many projects, DE-XRT images are analysed to classify ore and waste in sulphide deposits where the sulphides and non-sulphides have distinct characteristics in density. In the current practice of DE-XRT image processing, every pixel in the image gets classified into two categories, depending on the intensity of the pixel from both low and high energy X-ray response. If the pixel’s intensity is above the threshold curve generated in the high-energy and lowenergy scatter plot, it is classified as “higher density” material, and the remaining pixels are classified as “lower density” material. This paper elaborates on an alternative approach to DE-XRT image processing for in-depth characterisation of samples from a lead-zinc sulphide deposit. The detailed characterisation is achieved by providing density distribution of individual rock using DE-XRT laboratory sorting unit (COMEX) located at the University of British Columbia. Instead of classifying the X-ray images into two different classes from one threshold curve, multiple density classes are created between two threshold curves to generate the density distribution. By manipulating the two threshold curves, we can analyse images of samples obtained at different resolutions of density distribution. If the two threshold curves become infinitely close to each other, it will create a single-threshold scenario similar to the current methods being used in the industry. This method provides the ability to change the threshold curves, hence providing more flexibility on material characterisation based on the needs of the operation. Furthermore, the DE-XRT images from individual rock specimens are compared to the test results from hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser as well as assays of various elements for the same set of samples. The data analysis will provide information regarding ore characteristics and also the theoretical performance of the sensor-based sorting. A comparison of key technical and economical parameters of SAG and HPGR circuits is made, based on testing of several ore types for greenfield projects. The comparison of results make it possible to estimate efficiency of the technologies application, depending on ore hardness and taking into account potential risks for a circuit under design. Ore pass systems play a critical role in moving broken rock from the workplace to surface, and the integrity of the ore pass excavations is crucial. Over the life of the mine, ore pass integrity deteriorates, which may eventually result in the ore pass no longer being fit for purpose. This paper presents several case studies of successful ore pass rehabilitation exercises.
