In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards' continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. With the assistance and encouragement of Mr B.C. Alberts, the Institute's immediate Past President and Iscor's Senior General Manager: Mining, the Committee of the Johannesburg Branch recently organized a two day excursion for members to the northern Transvaal. The itinerary included visits to the Grootegeluk colliery, the Matimba power-generation utility, and the Thabazimbi iron-ore mine.

The Johannesburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was officially inaugurated at a General Meeting held in Kelvin House on Monday, 18th January, 1988. In addition to nominating committee members, Mr G. T.G. Emere delivered a presentation on the Barbrook gold-mining project, which is currently in the development phase some 40 km east of Barberton.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

In March 1984, two years' work by senior metallurgical personnel from the six major mining groups culminated in the formation of the Mine Metallurgical Managers' Association of South Africa. This Association has joined a group of specialist Associations operating within the South African mining industry whose aims are to uphold the standards and promote the interests of their various professions.

The construction of one of the world's largest goldrecovery plants to treat run-of-mine ore is progressing on schedule at the President Brand Gold Mine in the Orange Free State. Designed to treat 390 kt per month, the plant will recover 96 per cent of the gold from the ore at a capital cost of 160 million rands in terms of January 1983 money. It will replace the existing gold-treatment installation, as well as provide a 30 per cent increase in capacity. The Annual General Meeting of the Orange Free State Branch was held on Wednesday evening, 30th July, 1986, in the VIP Lounge of the Freegold North Region Canteen. The meeting was well attended, a total of 73 members, guests, and visitors being present. It was extremely pleasing to have such a large number of lady visitors present.

South Africa ranks among the top three mineral producing countries in the world, and yet the country's teaching and student population have a very limited knowledge of the mining and metallurgical industry. This is probably one of the major reasons why so few scholars elect to study mining-related disciplines at local universities, or to consider a career in the industry. Trochem (pty) Limited, which is jointly owned by Chemical Holdings Limited and Henkel Corporation of America, recently commissioned the first fatty amine plant to be built in Africa. The plant is capable of producing primary, secondary, and tertiary fatty amines with varying hydrocarbon-chain lengths. Process control Sponsored by the South African Institute of Measurement and Control, the Instrument Society of America is bringing a short course in process control to South Africa. This will be the first in a series of courses in instrumentation and process control.

The crux of reliable estimates of ore reserves lies in a comprehension of the related geological events and their controls on the formation and distribution of the economic mineralization, and on the rock types, lithology, and structures. The South African Institute for Mining and Metallurgy celebrated its 95th anniversary with a banquet at The Carlton on Friday, 2nd June, 1989. This event was attended by 600 people, including the Presidents of AS&TS, constituent societies, and other kindred bodies, together with members and their guests. The guest speaker was Mr Muray Hofmeyr, Chairman of the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Limited, who gave an interesting and thought-provoking talk entitled 'Will we still be the best in the year 2001'

One of the important facets of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is its service to its members. One way of achieving this objective is by pursuing an active branch structure. In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.

The Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society, from which The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is descended, had as its coat-of-arms a green shield with a very flat gold chevron dividing the field into two. A crossed pick and shovel occupied the lower half, and an alembic (distilling vessel) and a flaming crucible occupied the top half.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium on 'The Selection of Equipment for Underground Mining' in Johannesburg on 22nd September, 1982, which, judged by the interest shown, was an unqualified success. Mintek 50 As announced earlier, the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) will be celebrating fifty years of growth in 1984 and is organizing an international conference, MINTEK 50, on its areas of special expertise. Drilling Once again the South African Drilling Association will be holding a technical symposium in 1983. A one-day colloquium on the 'Selection of mining systems and methods' was held at Mintek, Randburg, on 21st September, 1983. The overall theme of the colloquium concerned the underlying reasons for the selection of a particular method or system of mining.

The Vaal Triangle Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was established on 20th November, 1986, at a meeting enthusiastically supported by local members. In attendance were special guests Dr H. Wagner (President, SAIMM) and Dr O.K. H. Stefen (Junior Vice-President, SAIMM).

The inaugural meeting of the Western Cape Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was held on Thursday evening, 13th November, 1986, in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. Before the meeting, letters had been sent to al the registered SAIMM members in the Western Cape area, informing them of the desire to establish local branch, and inviting them to attend.
