Many large caverns are being constructed in great depths in Korea mainly for the storage of oil and LPG. These caverns are mostly located near the port where rock conditions are reasonably good. In some instances, the horizontal stress is very high and endangers the stability of the cavern. The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of large caverns excavated in a rock mass with high horizontal stress where Ko value is close to 3. Result shows that stress exerted in the shotcrete at crown exceeds allowable value when the 3rd bench is excavated. Also found is the tensile failure of shotcrete near the boundaries between benches. In Korea werden viele grosse Kaverne fuer Aufbewahrung vom Oel und Fluessiggas in grosser Tiefe gebaut. Am Meisten befinden sich diese Kaverne in der Naehe von Haefen, wo der Fels gute Verhaeltnisse zum Bauen einer Kaverne besitzt. In einigen Faellen ist die Horizontalspannung sehr gross und dadurch wird die Stabilitaet vom Kaverne gefaerdet. Der Zweck dieser Arbeit ist die Stabilitaet des im Fels gebauten grossen Kavernes mit hoher Horiaontalspannung zu schuetzen, wo Ko-Wert sich auf 3 naehrt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Spannung im Spritzbeton an der Krone den zulaessigen Wert ueberschreitet, wenn das dritte Bank ausgegraben wird. Im Bereich des Spritzbetons zwischen Baenke wurde das Zugversagen festgestellt. Des larges cavités nombreuses sont en train d’être construites en grand profondeur en Corée prin-cipalement pour le stocage du pétrole et LPG. Ces cavités sont pour la plupart situées près de la porte oú les conditions des roches sont résonablement bons. En quelques cas, la contrainte hori-zontale est trés haute et met en danger la stabilité de la cavité. L’objet de cet étude est d’estimer la stabilité des large cavités excavées dans une masse de roche ayant une haute contrainte horizontale oú la valeur de Ko est proche à 3. Le résultat montre que la contrainte exercée dans le shotcrete à la couronne dépasse la valeur admissible quand le troisième banc est excavé. En plus une faillite en tension du shotcrete près de la frontière entre des bancs est trouvée.

ABSTRACT: A three-dimensional elastic constitutive model for rock salt is proposed. This stress strain law takes into account the three phases of creep (transient, steady state and accelerated creep), dilatancy, as well as the failure and post failure behaviour. The model was implemented into a finite element program and validated on the results of laboratory tests and in situ measurements. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the test and measurement results is achieved. A stability analysis for an underground repository in rock salt is presented. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird ein dreidimensionales elastisch-viskoplastisches Stoffgesetz für Steinsalz vorgestellt. Mit diesem Stoffgesetz können die drei Kriechphasen (primäres, sekundäres und tertiäres Kriechen), Dilatanz sowie das Bruch- und Nachbruchverhalten erfaßt werden. Dieses Modell wurde in ein Rechenprogramm, das auf der Methode der finiten Elemente basiert, implementiert und an Ergebnissen von Laborversuchen und in-situ-Messungen validiert. Die Versuchs- und Meßergebnisse lassen sich mit diesem Stoffgesetz qualitativ und quantitativ gut nachvollziehen. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird der Standsicherheitsnachweis für eine Untertagedeponie im Steinsalz erläutert. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un modéle constitutive élastique/viscoplastique à trois dimensions pour sel gemme. Ce modéle comprend les trois stade de fluage (fluage primaire, secondaire et tertiaire), la dilatation, le comportement de défaillance et d'après défaillance. Il est implanté dans un programme de calcul aux éléments finis. À l'aide des essais laboratoire et des mésures in situ, le modéle a été validé. Les résultats des essais et des mesures concordent qualitatifs et quantitatifs aux résultats des calculations.

The Tellnes open pit mine in Southwestern Norway has been operating since 1960. The maximum height of pit walls is currently about 150 meters with the current mine plan extending this distance to 400 meters with slope stability being a major controlling factor. As a result of unfavorable combinations of directions of major joints and faults, local stability problems have occurred several places in the pits walls. Stability problems have affected the reliability of main transport roads on several occasions. Most of such incidents have occurred during heavy rainstorms and during periods of repeated freezing/thawing. This paper reviews some of the stability problems and the measures taken to deal with such stability problems.

The work described forms part of a Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) funded project, currently an ongoing programme of research aimed at providing ?improved criteria, guidelines and the use of numerical models to design mine layouts at depth, so as to reduce seismicity and enhance worker safety?. The entire project deals with a number of distinct, albeit interrelated, research areas such as: subsidence and caving in hardrock, general numerical criteria for layout design, regional benefits of backfill, concrete pillars, strike stabilizing pillars and bracket pillars. This paper will focus on the last two items only. New considerations for the design of both stabilizing pillars and bracket pillar layouts are briefly discussed.

A people-centric, systematic approach that involves different stakeholders is considered necessary to successfully address changes associated with modernizing the South African mining industry. In this paper we discuss the inclusion of various South African mining industry stakeholders, particularly the employees, in equipment design and development processes. Data was acquired through a literature review and inputs from South African mining industry stakeholders through focus group discussions, interviews, and an online survey. It was suggested that some of the areas that could be improved by the inclusion of employees in the process are design quality, ergonomics, equipment acceptance by the workforce, safety, efficiency, skills, insight into context of use, and early design iterations and identification of problems. Among the issues considered to be barriers to inclusion were lack of buy-in, lack of resources, difficulty in manufacturers accessing the mines, difficulties in involving too many people, intellectual property concerns, and unavailability of mine employees due to their key responsibilities. Identified critical factors in the equipment design and development process include iterative design, stakeholder participation throughout the process, needs analysis through consultation, and change management. A guideline was developed for worker inclusion in equipment design and development that could be used by the South African mining industry. The study identified several economic and social benefits of including stakeholders in the early stages of design and development. It is recommended that the South African mining industry considers using the developed guideline.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. As the world continues to face the turmoil of the economic environment, legislative prerequisites and physical conditions the intervention of technological development is vital for the continuation of the ancient source of revenue: mining. The Palabora underground mining project is a state-of-the-art shaft mining system that will prove to be a benchmark in its field for years to come. An integration of modern technology?both in application and development?has resulted in a shaft system that is intrinsically holistic. Every aspect of the mining and production process has undergone thorough investigation, simulation and innovation to ensure that every component is selected by design and not simply conforming to past practice or trends. The process philosophy includes proven technology such as to promote the lowest operating cost and process time with the highest yield. The underground mining system is in the final stages of commissioning and will shortly be producing a nominal 30 000 tons per day with a predominantly automated system. This paper discusses the complete state-of-art shaft system developed for the Palabora underground mine, and refers particularly to the headgear, the winders, the conveyances and the shaft guide system, as well as the loading system developed specifically for the high performance requirements of the mine.

"The static recrystallization behaviour of Ti-Nb microalloyed high-strength steel during hot deformation was studied by conducting double-hit hot compression experiments using a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator. The effects of deformation temperature, strain rate, strain, and initial austenite grain size on the static recrystallization fraction are discussed. The static recrystallization kinetics were modelled, and the results show that the static recrystallization fraction increased with deformation temperature, strain rate, and strain and interpass time. The static recrystallization activation energy Qs was 326.05 kJ mol-1. Comparison of the experimental results and predicted results indicates that the effects of deformation parameters on the static recrystallization in multistage hot deformation are significant. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental results. IntroductionIn hot-forming processes, complex microstructures are often induced by multiple hot deformation mechanisms (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). The softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by the corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). It is well known that dynamic recrystallization (DRX); metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX), which occurs by the growth of DRX nuclei during intervals of deformation; and static recrystallization (SRX), which occurs by nucleation and growth during the intervals of deformation, can significantly alter the austenite grain size (Chen et al., 2015. Chen, Sui, and Cui, 2014; Mao et al., 2014). The long interpass times allow complete SRX to take place if the steel is being rolled above the interpass recrystallization stop temperature (Tnr), i.e. in the absence of carbonitride precipitation (Siciliano, 2000). In recent research, microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient in achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Bandyopadhyay et al., 2011). The alloying elements Nb, V, Ti are widely used in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel to achieve the desired strength and toughness properties with solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, grain refinement, and dislocation strengthening (Opiela, 2014; Chen and Yu, 2012). The wide applicability of alloying elements in HSLA steel is due to the fact that heat treatments are not required after forming of the parts, which results in time and cost savings."

The problem of materials balancing is reviewed with particular reference to the minerals industry. A broad statistical framework is established that, besides extending the classical estimation problem, allows questions concerning the value of sample information to be addressed. The following are examples of such questions: How much money should be spent on sampling? Which streams in a plant should be sampled? What should be sampled? The approach adopted makes use of Bayesian analysis. The discussion includes an illustrative example involving a simple flotation circuit.

Statistics is essentially a study of variability, the use of some suitable mathematical model representative of such variability, and the application of this inferred pattern of behaviour to practical problems. Probability theory is the mathematical structure devised for providing models for chance happenings. Perhaps the simplest example of a chance happening is the result obtained in tossing a coin. Although the result of a single toss can never be predicted with certainty, there is no reason why in repeated tosses the expectancy of heads and tails should not be equal. In such a case the outcomes of the experiment are said to be equally likely, so that the probability of obtaining heads (or tails) is 1 in 2, that is, 0,5. This simple probability .model refers to a 'mathematical' or 'unbiased' coin. Whether such probabilities are meaningful for actual coins tossed in any particular way is a matter for experience to determine. Probability models have also provided the basis for representing observed variability in cases where the actual under- lying probabilities are only partly known or defy analysis. A typical example of the latter case is the variability observed in the values obtained from gold or other ore samples. The interacting natural forces which gave rise to this variability are obviously very complex and are unlikely ever to be unravelled completely. In spite of this, probability theory and the more recent geostatistical theories have provided us with models which can represent this variability on a reasonable basis. Applied statistics and geostatistics must therefore never be accepted as exact mathematical sciences. Furthermore, a basic and essential concept is that in the type of applications covered in these notes, no model must ever be accepted as necessarily the final and exact answer to the problem; thus, any model must prove and continue to prove its appropriateness in practice, preferably by follow-up comparisons.

In the density distribution the stochastic variable is defined as the number of individual stones found per sample unit irrespective of the stone size. The density distribution is discrete and allows for barren sample units. As diamonds often occur in clusters, a Poisson mixture distribution is derived which is entirely new, as existing discrete distributions cannot represent the stone number frequencies found in nature. For the sizes of diamonds, which are measured by weight, a new compound logarithmic normal distribution is developed. Combination of (i), (il) and (iii) leads to a meaningful appraisal of diamondiferous ground expressed in monetary value per production unit of mining. Finally, confidence limits are calculated which allow for inferences from sampling to recovery.

What is a nugget effect? In the early development of geostatistics, the term ?nugget effect? was coined for the apparent discontinuity at the beginning of many semi-variogram graphs. This name was chosen to reflect the large differences found between neighbouring samples in ?nuggety? mineralizations such as Wits gold reefs. Geostatistical theory assumes that the difference between a sampled value and a potential repeat sample at the same location is actually zero. Included in this ?nugget effect? would be true variation between contiguous samples due to the nature of the mineralization, micro-fracturing, nugget or crystal size and so on. Also included in the nugget effect would be any ?random? sampling variation which might occur due to the method in which the sample was taken, the adequacy of the sample size, the assaying process, etc. Arguments were put forward that ?sampling errors? actually exist at zero distance. Some geostatistical schools actually maintain that ?nugget effect? is all sampling error. This would imply that ?perfect? sampling would eliminate the nugget effect entirely. There is now a dichotomy both in the geostatistical world and in the software packages provided for geostatistical analyses. It may seem academic to argue over whether the semi-variogram model should take a value of zero, a value equal to the nugget effect or a partial value at distance zero. However, the decision can have a profound effect on both the estimated resource and in our confidence on that resource. Whereas most geostatistical texts define the semi-variogram model as taking the value of zero at zero distance, others imply that the full nugget effect should be used at zero distance. For example: ?The nugget effect refers to the nonzero intercept of the variogram and is an overall estimate of error caused by measurement inaccuracy and environmental variability occurring at fine enough scales to be unresolved by the sampling interval3. ?Christensen4 has shown that the ?nugget effect?, or non-zero variance at the origin of the sernivariogram, can be reproduced by a measurement error model. ?The nugget effect is considered random noise and may represent short-scale variability, measurement error, sample rate, etc.5. The professions are subject to a wide range of changing conditions, and are as a result forced to become more competitive. Although there is a need for specialization under these circumstances, no formal recognition, definition, or control of specialists exists. Some of the professions have attempted, over extensive periods of time, to resolve the issues involved, and have met with varying degrees of success. It appeared from the replies to a questionnaire sent to over one-hundred-and- .fifty professionals, that both advanced education and experiential training, are considered to be necessary qualifications for specialization. The opinion as to whether it should be lift to the individual to cal himself a specialist, or whether recognition should be based on peer review, was divided The majority did not want the number of specialists to be controlled The response to the reservation of work for specialists was ambivalent.
