ABSTRACT: The Urft dam, the Diemel dam and the Eder dam are three old masonry damslocated in Germany. The paper describes the rehabilitation measures and the correspondingstability analyses carried out to adjust the dams to today's standards. Remedial works such as theexcavation of inspection galleries, the installation of a grout curtain with a downstream drainagescreen as well as the installation of pre-stressed permanent tendons were carried out. In all threecases the stability of the upgraded dam could be proven on the basis of finite element analyses. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Urft-, Diemel- und Edertalsperre sind drei alte deutscheSchwergewichtsmauern aus Bruchsteinmauerwerk. Im Beitrag werden Instandsetzungsmaß-nahmen und Standsicherheitsnachweise beschrieben, die erforderlich waren, um die Staumauernan den heutigen Stand der Technik anzupassen. Hierzu wurden Kontrollgänge aufgefahren,Dichtungsschleier mit luftseitiger Dränage sowie vorgespannte Daueranker hergestellt. In allendrei Fällen konnte unter Berücksichtigung der Instandsetzungsmaßnahmen die Standsicherheit derMauer auf der Grundlage von Berechnungen nach der Methode der finiten Elemente nachgewiesenwerden. RÉSUMÉ: Les barrages de Urft, Diemel et Eder sont trois barrages-poids vieux allemandsconstruit de maçonnerie de moellon. Dans cet article, opérations de remise en état et preuves destabilité sont décrits, qui étaient nécessaires pour adapter les barrages à l'état de la techniqueactuelle. À cet effet, des galeries de contrôle étaient creusés, voiles d'étanchéité avec des drains àla face aval et tirants précontraints permanents étaient fabriqués. Dans tous les trois cas, tenantcompte des opérations de remise en état, la stabilité de la barrage pouvait être prouvée à partir decalculs selon la méthode des éléments finis.

This study investigates the feasibility of using waste iron slag, the by-product from a mineral sands processing works, in road construction. The study includes the different options investigated for the treatment of a leachate that is produced during the cooling of the iron slag, prior to processing. It also reviews the reasons for choosing the current treatment option that is being trialed. Cooling the iron slag with water results in the formation of a leachate with a high pH and high sulphide concentration. This leachate can seep into the ground and, over time, it will contaminate the ground water. A system was designed to collect and treat the leachate to prevent contamination of surrounding natural water sources. Numerous leachate treatment options were investigated to find cost effective method of treatment After cooling, the iron slag is passed through an iron recovery plant and the unsaleable product is placed on a dumpsite. Rain percolates through the dumpsite, which can result in the formation of a leachate that can contribute to a contaminated plume. After extensive testwork, it was found that the dumpsite, which was leached of contaminants, could be screened and used as a G5material (specifications in Table II) in road construction. The initial challenge was to establish that this material was environmentally safe for use in this particular application. Approval from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) was required for the testwork and then for the long-term use of this material in the construction industry. The following challenge involved establishing a market for the material. Construction companies in the area were reluctant to change to a new product that was not naturally occurring. The economics of this project are extremely sensitive to transport costs and hence only projects within a specified radius can be supplied with the Black Top Gravel (BTG). This project is not are venue generator, but it does save the money that would be required to manage the dump, and it reduces the closure costs.

Theoretical and experimental investigations of the process of self-heating the coal accumulation with use of geological and mining conditions of development of the seams, as well of mass recoil parameters, factors of oxygen diffusion in coals, critical temperatures of self-ignition, incubation times received under laboratory conditions allowed working out the method of the local prognosis of the hazard of coal self-ignition in the course of carrying out the mining operations. New relationships of calculation of critical dimensions of the coal accumulation and of the incubation time are proposed.

In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article thefollowing hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the of chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

Abstract : The deformation monitoring data of the middle pier of the in permanent ship lock in Three Gorges revealed several interesting deformation phenomena. Conclusions and explanations are made concerning the phenomena in this paper, based on the finite element and engineering geology analyses. Firstly, the fluctuation of the horizontal transformations can be attributed to the alternate excavation of the two neighbouring ship lock rooms. Secondly, the rock mass discontinuities result in the displacement breaks. Lastly, the main reasons for the one-sided leaning phenomena are the natural stress, which is not evenly distributed, and the presence of discontinuities. This paper presents a valuable reference for studying the ‘individual phenomena’ in geotechnical engineering. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die Beobachtungs claten an der Mittelpier deformation bezüglich Permannenter Schiffsschleuse in den Drei Schluchten offenbaren einige interessante Deformationsphänomene. Die Schlußforgerungen und Erklärungen dazu in dieser Arbeit basseren methodisch anf der ‚’ ‘Endlichen-Elemente-Analzse’ und der ‘Ingenieurnissen-Geograhnie-Analzse’. Erstens kann die Fluktuation der horiyontalen Transformation durch die ungleichzeitige Ausgrabung der zwei benachbarten Schiffsschleusenräume verursacht werden. Zweitens resultzert die Diskontinuität der Felsenmasse ans dem verlagerten Bruch. Drittens: Die Hauptgründe für das Zu-einer-Seite-Neigung-Phänomen in manchen Stellen sind der ungleich eigeteilte natürliche Druck und das vorhandersein der Diskontinuität. Diese Arbeit präsentiert eine wertvolle Referenz für die Untersuchung der Sonderfälle in geotechnischen Bau. Résumé: Cet article a analysé sérieusement et profondément , en utilisant des procèdes d’étude par exemple l’analyse d’éléments défini et celle de la condition géographique de traveaux , des règles typiques de la déformation montrées dans les données surveillantes à propos de la déformation des pierres centrales dans les écluses éternelles du Trois Gorges , on en a tiré une conclusion : 1) le changement des chiffres des déplacements horizontaux des pierres centrales est causé par les creusages séquentiels des cannelure voisines ; 2) l’inclinaison au Nord de toutes les pierres centrales entre les deuxième et troisième chambres d’écluse est causée par la différence de la gravitation entre les deux chambres d’écluse et par l’existence de la surface structurale ; 3) l’existence de la surface structurale cause le changement des chiffres des déplacements horizontaux des pierres centrales au niveau profond . Cet article donne une référence utile pour l’étude du ‘ problème d’indivudualité’( ou les situations anormaux) dans les données surveillantes de la déformation des pierres centrales de la génie civile.

The REP experiment is part of the research programme conducted by Andra to investigate the possibility of reversible radwaste disposal in a Jurassic (Callovo-Oxfordian) argillite formation at the Meuse/Haute-Marne underground laboratory site in northeastern France. The experiment focuses on the hydromechanical response of the formation to sinking the laboratory access shaft. Modelling of boreholes and shaft sinking operations has helped to optimise measurement point locations based on initial stress tensor anisotropy, while minimising interaction between instrument boreholes. Analyses were made of model sensitivity to intrinsic rock characteristics, hydromechanical coupling properties and sensor installation procedures. L’expérimentation REP fait partie du programme de recherche pluridisciplinaire engagé par l’Andra pour étudier la possibilité d’un stockage réversible des déchets radioactifs dans la formation Callovo-Oxfordienne des argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne (Commune de Bure - France). Cette expérimentation permettra d’étudier la REponse hydromécanique de la formation aux sollicitations engendrées par le fonçage du Puits d’accès du laboratoire souterrain de recherche. Afin d’optimiser le positionnement des points de mesures, compte tenu de l’anisotropie du tenseur des contraintes initiales, et de minimiser les interactions entre les forages d’instrumentation, des modélisations des forages et du creusement du puits ont été conduites. Des analyses de sensibilité aux caractéristiques intrinsèques de la roche, aux propriétés de couplage HM et aux protocoles d’installation des capteurs ont été faites. Die REP-Untersuchung ist Teil des multidisziplinären Forschungsprogramms, das die ANDRA im Callovo-Oxfordian-Tonstein in situ am Standort Meuse/Haute Marne (Gemeinde Bure – Frankreich) im Hinblick auf eine Eignung zur reversiblen Lagerung radioaktiver Abfälle durchführt. Dabei soll das hydro-mechanische Verhalten der Formation auf die Beanspruchungen, die durch das Abteufen des Zugangsschachts zum Untertage-Forschungslabor erzeugt werden, untersucht werden. Zur optimalen Positionierung der Messpunkte unter Berücksichtigung der Anisotropie des Tensors der Ausgangsspannungen und zur Minimierung der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung der Instrumentierbohrungen wurden ein Schachtabteuf- und Bohrmodelle entwickelt. Zur Untersuchung der inhärenten Eigenschaften des Gesteins, des gekoppelten HM-Verhaltens und der Installationsprotokolle der Messsonden wurden Sensibilitätsanalysen durchgeführt.

A large wedge failure had occurred in the study area which was under construction. Therefore, in order to analyze the potential instability for this rock slope, the authors conducted numerical analysis with DEM and then the behaviour of rock mass was analysed after appropriate reinforce-ments were applied. Ein großer Keildefekt geschah in dem Untersuchungsgebiet, das im Bau befindlich ist. Deshalb, um die potentielle Unbeständigkeit für diesen Felsenabhang zu analysieren, führen die Urheber zahlenmäßige Analyse mit DEM. Und dann wird die Bewegung der Felsenmasse ana-lysiert, nachdem angemessene Verstärkungstruppen angewandt werden. Un grand échec de coin sèst passé dans le région étudié qui était en construction. Par conséquent afin d’analyser linstabilité potentielle de cette pente de roches, les auteurs ont mené une analyse numérique avec DEM. Ensuite le comportement de la masse de roches pourrait être analysée après les renforts appropriés étaient appliqués.

Abstract: In order to develop non-destructive methods in studying physical and mechanical properties of rock and replacing them with difficult and expensive static methods, several ultrasonic tests were carried out on cylindrical rock specimens in accordance with the ISRM suggested methods and velocity of P and S waves were determined. Also, density, porosity, water absorption, uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength were determined for each specimen in accordance with ISRM suggested methods. According to above tests static and dynamic elastic constants were calculated After statistical analysis of data obtained from tests, the relationships between velocity of elastic waves and physical or mechanical parameters were determined and some equations were obtained. Also similar analyses were performed on static and dynamic constants and some equations were extracted. Using these equations, the physical and mechanical parameters of rock and also static elastic constants can be estimated by conducting simple and quick tests (i.e. ultrasonic tests). Abriß: Um zu entwickeln, die zerstörungsfreien Methoden für Studieren die physischen und mechanischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch ist für Ersetzen diese Methoden mit schwierigen teuren statischen Methoden, mehrere altrasonic Prüfungen auf zylindrischen Steinproben gemäß ISRM anregenden Methoden und den Geschwindigkeiten von S und P Wellen bestimmt worden sind durchgeführt worden. Außer der Dichtheit und der Porosität betonen Wasser Aufnahme und monoaxial Widerstand und dehnbaren indirekten Widerstand jeder Probe betreffend der erhaltenen Ergebnisse die atmosphärische Aufladung sind bestimmt worden und die dynamischen Faktoren der Steine sind kalkuliert worden. Nachdem statistische Analyse die Korrelation der Ergebnisse zwischen der Geschwindigkeit elastischer Wellen und mechanischer und physischer Eigentümer der Steine erhalten worden ist, und mehrere Verhältnisse sind vorgeschlagen worden. Eine ähnliche Analyse ist auf atmosphärischer Aufladung und dynamischen Faktoren durchgeführt worden und einige Verhältnisse sind erhalten worden. Mit Hilfe dieser Verhältnisse die physischen und mathematischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch können die Statistik Faktoren durch einfachen und schnellen altrasonic Prüfungen erhalten werden. Apres les analyses statistiquc sur les resultat obtenue du les essaybs, c‘ etait produit les relation entre les viptesse les ondes elastique et les proprietes physic et mechanicue des roches et c est propose quelque relations. Aussi le meme enterpretation sur les constant statique etdinamique. En possezon de ces relations, les spesificatio physique, aussi on peut trouver leur constant statique, avel les essayes sample et raptid a d ultrasonique.

Hochtief AG Germany has developed a comprehensive management and information system for the construction industry named Aristoteles. This system is an efficient supporting tool to manage a variety of construction sites as well as operating business units with required economic targets. As such, Aristoteles offers wide-ranging control of complex economic processes in construction in a consistent manner. In this paper the process oriented functions of the system will be described with special emphasis on finance accounting and cost control. The basic elements in this respect are tender estimation, creation of initial project budgets and running budgets, regular determination of work done and result forecast to the end of the project. Further, cost accounting, monthly reporting, and all balance-related postings are included. On the basis of the extensive reporting (targeted/actual cost comparison, cost manager, project report, actual/targeted hours worked comparison, overhead cost report, amendment report or project (result) lists of all projects realized by one business unit), the responsible managers can make justified project evaluations, project controls and variance analyses during the project period and derive appropriate management measures. Thus, Aristoteles includes all substantial elements for the risk management of the operational business. In big construction joint-stock companies it is of crucial importance to satisfy the information requirements of the investors. In this respect the system provides a transparent presentation of the financial, investment and profitability situation of the company. In the international construction industry the balancing rules according to IAS (International Accounting Standards) have already been used to a larger extent. In accordance with these rules the partial profits of the work during execution can be shown as realized even before completion of a long-term contract. The validity of Aristoteles will be outlined briefly. Major advantages using the system are highly enhanced accuracy of project controlling, systematic overhead allocation to projects, change of attitude of the project personnel due to increased cost consciousness and improved flow of information within the company.

A study carried out in the iron basin of Lorraine (North-East of France) highlighted the existence of under-oxygenated and noxious gas emissions (carbon dioxide, radon…) in vast built-up areas related to former mine workings. Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes in buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. Shear-flow coupling tests are conducted using an original apparatus, and a shear-flow coupling model using Geographic Information System (GIS) is developed in order to evaluate shear-flow coupling properties of a rock joint. Shear-flow coupling tests indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of joint once decreases, and then rapidly increases at the shear displacement near the peak shear stress. The proposed model simulates the test results relatively well. However it indicates that it is difficult to apply the local ‘cubic law’ model in the initial shear stage, in which the change of selective flow path is remarkable. Scher-Fliess-Kopplungsversuche werden mit einem neuartigen Versuchsgerät durchgeführt und mithilfe von Geo-Informationssystemen (GIS) gedeutet, um so ein Modell für die Scher-Fliess-Kopplung in Gebirgstrennflächen zu entwickeln. Die Versuche zeigen, dass die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit zuerst abnimmt, dann aber schnell wieder zunimmt sobald die maximale Scherfestigkeit erreicht ist. Das vorgestellte Modell bildet die Testergebnisse relativ gut nach. Es zeigt auch, dass es schwierig ist, das lokale Cubic Law im Initialstadium der Scherbeanspruchung anzuwenden, in dem die Variationen selektiver Fliesswege gross ist. Les essaies hydro-mécaniques couplés en cisaillement sont réalisés grâce à un appareil éxperimental prototype et un modèle de couplage hydro-mécanique utilisant le S.I.G (systeme d'information géographique) développé dans le but d'évaluer les propriétés hydro-mécaniques des joint rocheux. Les résultats indiquent que la conductivité hydraulique des joints décroit puis augmente rapidement en se rapprochant du pic de cisaillement. Le modèle proposé simule relativement bien les résultats expérimentaux ; mais indique également qu’il est difficile d’appliquer localement la loi cubique au début du cisaillement où, les changements d’orientation dans le réseau d'écoulement sont considerables.

The control of flotation plants is by no means trivial. Flotation is one of the most interactive minerals? processing operations. The interactive nature of flotation circuits results in oscillations of levels and hence of grades and recoveries. Also, poor level setpoint tracking and disturbances have negative influences on grades and recoveries. The result is an unstable plant with limited scope for optimization. An advanced controller, FloatStarTM, has been developed to provide tight control and to reduce the amount of disturbances in flotation levels. It has been shown on a number of plants that the system results in faster and better setpoint tracking, better regulatory control and faster settling times after start-ups and disturbances. The successful stabilization provided by FloatStar has made it easier to investigate the area of optimization on flotation circuits. Mintek has identified the need for a more meaningful set of setpoints or aeration rates to use as a basis for control than levels and have advocated flow control by looking after residence times. When the feed conditions change, the ideal solution would be an algorithm or strategy that finds the new optimum conditions rather than just having an unguided hunt from the previous point. A multivariable flow-optimizing algorithm, a new module in FloatStar, has been developed to calculate optimum level setpoints and/or aeration rates that will aim to optimize the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit. Heavy mineral sands are usually beneficiated in a spiral concentrator circuit prior to separation of heavy minerals into streams of zircon, rutile and ilmenite. The performance of the spiral concentrators is heavily affected by the presence of slimes in the rougher feed. The paper quantifies the effect of slimes content and discusses the beneficial effect of spiral feed de-sliming. The net effect of inefficient slimes removal can cause significant recovery losses of the heavy minerals present in the feed.

After 1990, a great process of re-organisation and economic reform has occurred in the Romanian mining sector and especially in the pitcoal mining in the Jiu Valley. This process has included both legislation and the main aspects for getting an economic efficiency in the environment issues and for dealing the problems with social impact. Accordingly, starting with the year 1993 a new mining method has been introduced to turn efficient the pitcoal mining, and we speak about mining with caved in bed. This method has two variants: - with transverse strips and caved in bed; - with long face and caved in bed. Each of the above-mentioned variants has in turn several subdivisions, depending on how the longwall is prepared and on other characteristics. By using this method, the output has increased compared to other mining methods. The main safety aspects concerning caved in mining refer to: - great emissions of methane; - technical aspects (a mining method system, supports, discharging process); - pressure driving (analysed for the case of mining with long face, with transverse strips as well for the case of transverse strips when mining a subsequent sublevel).

Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. Mining machinery integrated database for open cast mine operations is under going testing in a State company, Coal Mines Tuzla. ABSTRACT: Underground hydrocarbons storage is a very specific domain for the designer. He is usually free to adjust the section, shape and layout to cope with the geological and geotechnical conditions. This paper presents a panorama of the geotechnical design of mined underground storage caverns, then lists a number of uncommon features encountered in a storage excavated in Sydney, Australia, the Elgas LPG project that had to face major non-isotropic conditions with numerous local variations, impacting on the achievement of the design profiles. Changes in geotechnical design methodology and practice are examined through this project, now in operation, which will have lasted altogether almost ten years. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die untertaegige Speicherung von Kohlenwasserstoffen unterliegt in der Planung sehr spezifischen Bedingungen. Der planende Ingenieur hat bei der Dimensionierung und Formgebung der Speicherhohlraeume gewisse Freiheiten, muss jedoch vorgefundene geologische und geotechnische Bedingungen beruecksichtigen. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt zunaechst einen allgemeinen Ueberblick ueber die geotechnische Planung von bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Speicherhhohlraeumen. Darueber hinaus werden Besonderheiten betrachtet, mit denen das Elgas LPG-Speicherprojekt in einer bergmaennisch aufgefahrenen Kaverne in Sydney, Australien konfrontiert war. Hierbei ging es um die Beruecksichtigung anisotroper Bedingungen mit zusaetzlichen Heterogenitaeten im Gestein und den daraus erwachsenden Schwierigkeiten, die geplante Hohlraumform zu verwirklichen. Ueber einen Zeitraum von fast 10 Jahren, in denen das jetzt in Betrieb befindliche Projekt unterschiedliche Betriebsphasen durchlaufen hat, wurden verschiedene geotechnische Entwurfsverfahren auf ihre Anwendbarkeit geprueft. RESUME : Le stockage souterrain d’hydrocarbures est un domaine très spécifique pour le concepteur, car celui-ci dispose d'une large liberté pour adapter les sections, les formes et les implantations aux conditions géologiques et géotechniques de l’environnement choisi. Après un panorama de la conception géotechnique des stockages souterrains d’hydrocarbures par la méthode dite des cavités minées, l’accent sera mis sur un certain nombre de particularités rencontrées lors du projet de stockage de GPL de Elgas à Sydney en Australie, creusé dans de très fortes conditions d’anisotropie du massif rocheux, avec de nombreuses variations locales et toutes les implications que cela peut avoir sur le maintien des formes. L’évolution des approches méthodologiques géotechniques durant la dizaine d'années de développement de ce projet depuis les premières études jusqu'à l'exploitation actuelle est également présentée. The ‘Metallurgical Operations’ Department of Grinaker-LTA Process Engineering (GLTA) currently undertakes then primary mining as well as the re-deposition of tailings forTicor South Africa (Ticor) at their Hillendale mine near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mining plant, which was designed by GLTA on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, is capable of mining 780 000 tons per month of ROM material which is then pumped to the Primary Wet Plant for treatment by Ticor. Hydraulic mining via high pressure water cannons and subsequent transfer of the heavy mineral slurry at an RD of between 1.35 and 1.48, has never before been undertaken successfully at this level of production on an in situ reserve. The presentation will take the form of a case study in which the unique site operating conditions will be detailed and discussed, as will the innovative process and engineering solutions employed by GLTA to overcome the engineering and production challenges encountered. In order to protect the intellectual property involved in this operation, this paper is fairly general in nature, and attempts merely to provide the reader with a broad perspective understanding of the operation, and some of the difficulties encountered during the early stages of production.

The computer assisted generation of geological models to represent the geometry of, and grade distribution within, orebodies is a rapidly growing area of the geological profession. Such models are increasingly used as a necessary starting point in determining the mineability of mineral deposits in terms of practical mine design and economic considerations. The transition from traditional techniques such as field or underground mapping and the manual calculation of grade and tonnage estimates, as well as related activities such as the interpolation of cross-sections, the use of stereographic projections, core logging and hand contouring, to computerized applications, is by no means complete. In fact, many geological professionals deliberately avoid the use of computer simulations based on the perception that the resulting models are simplistic and that their construction is not founded on sound geological principles. The purpose of this paper is to assess current thinking on this topic by considering; (a) an overview of advances in the drafting of geological maps, (b) the theoretical basis for multi-dimensional geological modelling, (c) the case for combining traditional and modern techniques, and (d) the benefits to the mining value chain.
