Iron and steelmaking The Centre de Recherches Metallurgiques (CRM) and the Verein Deutscher Eisenhiittenleute (VDEh) are jointly to hold the International Meeting on Iron and Steelmaking 1976 in Brussels from 17th to 18th May and in Diisseldorf from 20th to 21st May, 1976. An electrochemical investigation of the dissolution of copper, nickel, and copper-nickel alloys in ammonium carbonate solutions by M. J. NICOL, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Hons.) (Wits.) (Visitor) The dissolution of copper and nickel in ammonium carbonate solution was studied by techniques involving electrohemical anodic dissolution and ring-disc electrodes. The rate of oxidation of both copper and nickel by copper (11) was shown to be controlled mainly by diffusion to the surface. Variations in rate with changes in copper (11) concentration, agitation, pH, ammonia concentration, temperature, and copper (I) concentration were investigated and rationalized in terms of their effects on the electrochemical half-reactions involved. Evidence was found for the passivation of nickel and nickel-copper alloys of more than 50 per cent nickel.

(Visitor) An account is given of an investigation of the use of a continuous particle-size monitor - the PSM-IOO. The monitor system, in addition to showing marked variations in grinding fineness over short periods of time, particularly after stopping and re-starting the feed to the mill, has indicated weaknesses in accepted mill operating practice. The main potential of the system is the opportunity it has provided for almost complete automation of the milling circuit.

A study of the arrangements for pulp discharge on pebble mills, and their influence on mill performance by A. H. MOKKEN, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow), G. K. I. BLENDULF, M.Sc. (Stockholm) (Member), and G. J. C. YOUNG, B.Sc. (London) (Member) Although used for many years in the gold-mining industry, the conventional pan lifter at the discharge end of a pebble mill has hindered attempts at optimization of speed of rotation and pulp flow. A theoretical approach to flow patterns in pan lifters has pointed to limitations in the capacity of these lifters, with capacity decreasing as speed of rotation is increased. Complete elimination of the pan lifter by the adoption of peripheral or end discharge has resulted in a marked increase in pulp flow and an improvement in power utilization. Assays of the gold content of pulp discharged after a mill stoppage from mills fitted with pan lifters show values well in excess of the current milled grade, which indicates an accumulation of gold particles in the mill and, therefore, a longer retention period. The same could apply to other heavy minerals and metals present in the ore feed or worn off mill linings and metallic grinding media. Examples are osmiridium, fine iron and iron alloys, and copper and sulphide minerals. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher specific gravities of these metals and minerals, causing them to migrate towards the mill shell, from which position they are not readily removed by the lifters at the discharge end of the mill. The close association of gold particles with iron and sulphide minerals in the crevices of mill liners might be conducive to the formation of coatings on the gold. Assays of samples of milled pulp taken from a mill designed for end discharge show a lower accumulation of gold. The accumulation and nature of these gold particles are being studied at present. With increasing diameters of pebble (or autogenous) mills, peripheral or end discharge appears to be the preferred method of pulp removal.

An extension of lognormal theory and its application to risk analysis models for new mining ventures by B. M. WAINSTEIN*, B.Sc., M.B.A. (Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The lognormal distribution, which remains the most popular distribution model for ore values, is investigated. The T-distribution, an integral part of this theory, is dependent on the sample size, n, and the unknown population parameter, o2, which cannot be integrated out. Hence, o2constitutes a nuisance parameter. In this study, the robustness of the T-distribution to changes in o2 is examined. It is found that the T-distribution is robust for 0,1 <= o2 >= 2,5, a domain covering most practical applications of the lognormal theory. By the use of o2 = 0,7, multiplier factors, which facilitate the computation of the confidence limits, are derived for a comprehensive set of confidence levels.

The commissioning of a test facility for the calibration of anemometers by J. J. VAN RENSBURG (Student Member). After the erection of a commercially produced open-jet wind tunnel for the calibration of the anemometers used in mine ventilation, the wind tunnel was calibrated for routine use. There is a choice of five orifice plates. which, together with a variable-speed fan, can give a measurable range of air velocities in the test section from about 0,05 to 35 m/so The orifice plates were calibrated against a standard pitot tube, and it is now necessary only to measure the pressure drop across an orifice plate and to read off, from a set of graphs, the true outlet velocity in the test section. The paper describes the underlying theory and the test results.

The organization and mechanized colliery management of a large by G. C. THOMPSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Witwatersrand), M.B.L. (Member), and P. G. HENDERSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Pretoria), M.B.A. (Member). Usutu Collieries Limited, at present the largest single producer of coal in South Africa, supplies Cam den power station. and produces 435 000 tonnes per month by conventional mechanized methods from bord-and-pillar workings in three mines. The thickness of the seams averages 2 metres, and the depth below surface varies from 15 to 150 metres. Each mine depends to a different extent on certain common facilities and services. Two of the mines are located on the same coalfield, and their rationalization would possibly be advantageous. Production policy is one of productivity with flexibility. The double-loader system is widely used, and one section at each mine is worked on single shift. Pillar extraction is practised where possible. In addition to lubrication and inspections, planned maintenance of mining equipment consists of sub-assembly replacements and overhauls. Conveyor and tractor/trailer transport is used underground. but trolley-wire locomotive haulage is being considered. The organization is such that co-ordination is relatively difficult, and certain changes could possibly improve the functioning of the engineering and mining departments. Technical and management training is carried out. Long-term planning will make use of a computer programme and will involve the investigation of other mining methods. Five-year and twelve-month plans are prepared, the planning of coal quality being based on the view that the mine and the power station together constitute a system. Control information systems make use of a remote computer terminal located at the mine. An improved integrated system is being investigated.

A comparison between hydraulic and pneumatic rockdrills by D. CLEMENT The regulation of compressed-air reticulation systems is very poor compared with that of electrical systems; this means that electrohydraulic rockdrill systems offer greater flexibility, additional power being readily available at the working face. Hydrometallurgy A new journal devoted to all aspects of the aqueous processing of metals is scheduled to appear this year. Entitled Hydrometallurgy, the journal will be published in quarterly issues, one volume per year. Mineral dressing Contributions are invited for the Symposium on Recent Progress in Mineral Dressing in South Africa, which is to be arranged jointly by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the National Institute for Metallurgy. Powder metallurgy The annual meeting on powder metallurgy organized by The Metals Society is this year to be held at the Stratford Hilton Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon (the notification did not include the date of the meeting). Vacation School The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy has great pleasure in announcing its intention of holding a vacation school on the topic of electric-furnace melting. Notes on the composition of pre- European copper and copper-alloy artefacts from the Transvaal by H. M. Friede. Ph.D. (Visitor) Seven copper artefacts (five ingots and two ornaments) found at prehistoric sites in the Transvaal were submitted to analysis. All the artefacts showed a high copper content and a relatively Iow level of impurities. A little-known ingot type from the Limpopo Valley (&apos;nail&apos; ingot) is described, and its analysis is given. The analysis of two copper ornaments that come from sites dated to the 5th Century AD. and the 11th Century AD. showed the constancy of the composition of copper articles over long periods. The well-known &apos;Blaauwberg Ingot&apos; was re-analysed, and the results showed that this ingot cannot be regarded as a true bronze. Analytical values for the composition of three brass artefacts from Bambandyanalo (Mapungubwe), Northern Transvaal, are given. Some aspects of pre-European bronze manufacture and brass smelting, and of early metal trade from the East Coast into the interior of South Africa, are discussed.

Prediction of the performance of explosives In bench mining by C. M. LOWNDS, B.Se. Hons (Rhodes), Ph.D (Cape) (Visitor) Some of the problems encountered in the calculation of the relative weight strength of explosives are discussed, and a realistic model of the behaviour of explosion products in a borehole is proposed. The heat flow from condensed to gaseous products is calculated as a function of time, and the relationship between the pressure and the volume of the product gases is found by a consideration of the compression of the rock between radial cracks. Work done on the burden is assumed to cease when the cracks first appear at the face. Reasonable values of burden and crack velocities are obtained from the model. Calculations of the relative weight strengths of aluminized mixtures of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil show that the increased density resulting from the addition of aluminium is the main advantage to be gained.

The mechanization of haulage drilling in the gold mines of Anglo American Corporation by J. w. WILSON, Ph. D., C.Eng., M.AIME, F.!.Min.E., F.I.M.M. (Fellow), and J. G. TAYLOR, A.C.S.M., C.Eng., M.!.M.M. (Visitor) Some one-thousand kilometres of tunnels are mined annually in the gold mines of South Africa. Until two years ago, mechanized drilling on South African gold mines was not an economic proposition because of the availability of inexpensive labour and the fact that mechanized equipment developed for other mining markets could not perform satisfactorily in the tough, abrasive quartzites of theWitwatersrand System. A project team from the Technical Development Services Organisation of the Anglo American Corporation, in collaboration with various manufac turers of drill rigs and drill steel, has been concerned with the development of suitable equipment for mechanized main-haulage drilling. After two-and-a-half years of extensive testing and development of drifters, drill steels, and bits, many of the problems encountered have been sotved, and gradually jumbos mounting pneumatically and hydraulically powered drifters are being phased into production on various gold mines of the Group. A description of the development work is given, and actual operating results are recorded, together with details of the drilling and blasting techniques used.

The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

The production processes are described, and the properties of the two types are examined and compared. Guidelines are given for the selection of the correct grade of ferrosilicon for any particular application.
