A classification of flotation processes carried out in concentrated electrolyte solutions, e.g., seawater, is proposed using the most obvious features of these processes: low or high content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions, pulp ionic strength, and pH. The first distinguishable group is the processes carried out in NaCl/KCl solutions, about 0.5 M in the case of salt flotation of inherently hydrophobic minerals, and at concentrations about 10 times higher in the flotation of potash ores. In the flotation of sulfide ores, such as nickel or copper ores, with xanthate-like collectors, the xanthate collector is apparently not affected by pulp ionic strength and only adjustment of frother may be required. Content of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions in seawater is the main difference between such systems and fresh water. The presence of these metallic ions can adversely affect flotation in the pH ranges over which these ions hydrolyse. The successful flotation of Cu-Mo ores typically requires depression of pyrite at high pH values achieved with the use of lime. However, in seawater, flotation of Cu-Mo ores requires removal of the hydrolysis products of the Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions or the use of a pyrite depressant that can be effective over the pH ranges that are much below the pH of hydrolysis. Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions also affect flotation of phosphate ores with fatty acids. In this case, the depression mechanism is not caused by precipitating magnesium hydroxides on the mineral surface but by precipitation of collector insoluble salts, and the same ions are responsible for depression in both cases. In the seawater flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores and phosphate ores, the practical solution involves either removal of Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions prior to the flotation or complexation with other reagents.

The influence of reagents dosage, pH, temperature, and particle size on the kinetics of apatite flotation response from magnetite has been investigated. The first-order models characterizing rectangular distribution and fast and slow distributions (F-S model) of floatabilities gave an excellent fit to the results of apatite flotation when compared to other models. However, the latter model is found to be better than the former in the goodness of fit and also in the description of flotation performance. The kinetic parameters in the F-S model are estimated by using a nonlinear least squares fitting program. The ratio of fast and slow rate constants is observed to be an important parameter for identifying the optimum levels of the variables and to outline the selectivity between apatite and magnetite. The influence of collector dosage is realized from the model parameters by relating it to the fraction of slow- floating particles. An attempt has been made to describe the apatite flotation behavior with the determined model parameters.

Many models have been suggested in the past to obtain a satisfactory fit to flotation data. Of these, first-order kinetics models with a distribution of flotation rate constants are most common. A serious limitation of these models is that type of the distribution must be pre-supposed. Methods to overcome this limitation are discussed and a procedure is suggested for estimating the 'actual' distribution of flotation rate constants. It is demonstrated that the classical first-order model fits the data well when applied to coal flotation in narrow size-specific gravity intervals. When applied to material which is fractionated on the basis of size alone, the use of three parameter models, which were modified from their two parameter analogs such as rectangular, sinusoidal, and triangular, gave most reliable results.

Development of large mechanical flotation machines during the past fifteen years. This success was a contributing factor in recognizing the value in a systematic and rational means of optimizing the flotation circuit, where the preferred circuit arrangement is based on both economic and metallurgical performance considerations applied to a relatively small number of flotation machines. Flotation kinetics and effective pulp residence time models have been incorporated into a computer program, described in this paper, which has proven to be an effective analytical tool to quantitatively relate flotation process parameters, such as feed tonnage and grade, solids concentration, and reagent strategy, to flotation circuit arrangement, machine size and operating condition.

During the first four decades of flotation practice, close to 200 machine designs were patented, although only about a score were ever used commercially. By the end of that period, the rigors of use had resulted in obsolescence of most pneumatic cells, with a few mechanical cells dominating the field. After World War II, newer designs began to appear but most were modifications in varying degrees of older designs with special features added. Of the dozen or so most recent developments, almost all are pneumatic, relying on compressed air instead of impellers for motive power, although in several cases pumps supplement compressors. Table 1 lists a few of the more fully documented new cells, with their significant characteristics, along with similar characteristics of a widely used mechanical cell. New designs in general are emphasizing: bubble size control; in several cases, methods for delivering feed directly to the froth; methods for introducing and dispersing air through nozzles, eductors, packed beds, or permeable walls; and variable cell volumes, relative to capacities, ranging from very small, with less than a second of retention time, to the largest, with retention times of over 20 min. An important question is the extent to which any of the newer designs are based on locating weaknesses in current mechanical cell designs and then using these as a starting point for innovations. In the present study, the key subprocesses which must take place in a cell are outlined; mechanical cells are analyzed to establish where weaknesses may exist; and then alternative subprocesses are considered which could effect improvements. COMPONENTS FOR CELL DESIGN It is assumed that mineral surface chemistry has been modified as necessary to provide optimum potential floatability. While the cell process may affect this to a degree, cell design is primarily concerned with actualizing the existing potential floatability. Given: the process tonnage, performance objectives, and plant floor area, the paper will outline the metallurgical and machine hydrodynamic scale-up procedures for translating the lab flotation test results to the design of a full size flotation machine installation, including the machine number, size, and arrangement. Machine selection considerations for rougher, scavenger and cleaner duty, and special considerations relative to specific applications, will be summarized where appropriate. The value of kinetic modeling in quantitative metallurgical (lab to full size machine) scale-up will be reviewed considering a coal installation, and design information for additional applications such as copper, molybdenum, iron, phosphate, and potash will be discussed.

The modern flotation machine is the result of decades of adaptation to a changing environment. In response to falling ore grades, and rising demands, tonnages, and costs, attempts are now underway to expand machine capacity by about an order of magnitude, while at the same time maintaining metallurgical performance and if possible reducing power requirements per unit throughput. Empiricism and rule-of-thumb have guided flotation machine design and scale-up, and a current need is for the development of a fundamental understanding of the subject. Design features of current and some obsolete machines are discussed in an attempt to outline those principles of flotation machine design which are known, and to delineate topics needing investigation. Attempts are made to distinguish between essential machine features required by the physics of the process, those features resulting from speculative theories on the flotation mechanisms, and features which are essentially styling variations. Topics discussed include: flotation mechanisms; tank and impeller/ stator design and dimensions; impeller speed; aeration; power consumption; particle suspension and dispersion; capacity; correlation of design parameters and operating variables; scale-up and scale- down; materials flow; problems in machine design. Design details and operating data for several current machine families are provided in Appendices.

Phelps Dodge Mining’s Bagdad, AZ copper facility uses a large series of cone crushers and ball mills to reduce copper ore to very fine particles. The solids are mixed with water to create a slurry. Milk of lime is added to this slurry to raise the pH. Small amounts of reagents are also added, including a frother to make bubbles, as well as a collector chemical that causes the copper minerals to stick to those bubbles. This material is pumped to a series of froth flotation cells to concentrate the copper. Air is blown into the flotation cell tank and the pulp mixture is vigorously agitated. Rising bubbles carry the copper particles over the edge of the flotation tank. The bubbles break after they flow over the edge.

"The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

Due to declining iron ore grades, low-grade ores with complex mineralogy — namely, banded iron formation (BIF) — are being explored to maximize iron ore resources and increase the life of mine. Flotation is the standard global process used for the beneficiation of BIF ores, as it is a complex ore reserve, and liberation is typically achieved below 1 mm. This study focuses on the flotation of a South African BIF, evaluating its response to different collectors, as well as effect of grind. As flotation is an expensive process and South Africa ranks high on the production cost curve, preconcentration by gravity or magnetic separation is performed prior to flotation. Thus, flotation was also performed on a gravity concentrate to determine if a grade suitable for steelmaking (approximately 63 percent) is achievable. The results indicate that the use of an alkyl ether amine-based collector partially neutralized with acetic acid is suitable for separation of hematite from illite and quartz at high pH values. Further optimization tests are being pursued to improve overall recovery and grade.

Froth flotation of alumina particles was studied by employing and hydrogen gas bubbles. The effect of current density was studied over a range of 0.1 to1.6 kA/m2. Compared to hydrogen, the use of oxygen bubbles at any given gas evolution rate resulted in a higher flotation recovery. The existence of an optimum current density, for each given particle size was indicated. Flotation at higher current densities resulted in better flotation kinetics, while flotation at lower current densities resulted in better Spas utilization.

Separation of dolomite from apatite, because of nonselective adsorption, cannot be achieved by conventional froth flotation technique. Results obtained in the present study also indicate, that this can be attributed to the depletion of the collector molecules due to complexation with the calcium and magnesium ions, dissolved from the two minerals. However, it has been established in this investigation that conditioning the material at pH 10, followed by reconditioning, without any additional collector, at pH 4, results in selective flotation of dolomite from the mixture. The recovery of apatite, in the proposed reconditioning process, is much higher than with the conventional conditioning under similar pH conditions. The mechanisms involved in the conventional conditioning, and the reconditioning process are presented.

Primary amines are strong collectors of apatites and they can selectively float sedimentary phosphates from calcareous ores. However, secondary and tertiary amines and tri-methyl ammonium salts were ineffective. The use of kerosene reduces the collector requirements because hydrocarbon is coadsorbed along with the amine on the mineral surface. The heats of reaction of aminium ions with such anions as phosphate, carbonate and sulfate, were measured in a microcalorimeter and discussed in terms of the solubility of the precipitates formed and their relationship with the adsorption mechanism of primary amines on phosphate minerals. Experimental evidence supports a view that primary amines are adsorbed through chemical interaction between the aminium and phosphate ions at the mineral surface.

The gradual depletion of high-grade sulphide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of non-sulphides possible, although in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulphidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to flotation. (1) (2) (3) In recent years, Bautista and Sollenberger(4) have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulphides by reacting them with molten sulpur. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulphidized minerals. It is divided into two parts; Part I describes the sulphidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and Part II presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulphidization.

Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

The difficulty arises from fact that boron minerals cover a spectrum of solubilities. Colemanite (a calcium-containing, relatively insoluble, boron mineral) and borax (a highly soluble boron mine, have been used to exemplify the flotation of boron minerals. Using sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH), the floatability responses of these boron minerals are considerably different. This has been ascribed to variations in the solubilities of boron minerals and the presence of cations in the lattice structure. In study, flotation tests and zeta potential measurements used to determine the flotation mechanisms of boron minerals.

Although laboratory studies of tin flotation have been reported as far back as the 1920`s(1), the commercial application has only been realized within the past few years(2,3). The principal technical difficulty in the application of the process to tin ores has not been in the flotation of cassiterite itself, this mineral being readily recoverable with the common collectors, including xanthates with heavy metal ion activation(2). The difficulty has been with the depression of the gangue minerals commonly associated with tin ores, and to a lesser extent with the problems of collector consuming semi-colloidal minerals which are in some cases present. The application of sulfosuccinamate collectors to flotation of cassiterite from the Catavi, Bolivia, slime tailings has recently been described(3). The investigation which led to this successful process development included studies of other samples of gravity plant tailings as well as of lode tin ores. A common flowsheet with few significant variations was applied to most of these ore samples with acceptable results. In the following the process is described and the results of its application to samples from Bolivia and elsewhere given. Among the factors considered are: gangue depression, particle size and slime effects, and reagent and pulp density levels.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.
