While the United States and the rest of the world struggles with record-setting oil prices Canadian oil sands producers are ramping up production to meet demand for oil while also fighting against a host of negative images. In recent months, the price of oil has skyrocketed. Most of that oil comes from Saudi Arabia. In Alberta, Canada there are unconventional oil reserves that rival those in Saudi Arabia in the vast Canadian oil sands, sometimes called the tar sands. Proponents of the oil sands say that Alberta?s oil sands can be a secure source of oil and energy for the United States for many years to come. With new mining and drilling projects, the industry has said that it could quadruple its production to nearly 4 million bbl/day by 2020. Time magazine once called the oil sands, ?Canada?s greatest buried treasure that could satisfy the world?s demand for petroleum for the next century.? So why hasn?t the United States embraced this close, politically secure source of energy? Because, getting usable fuel from the oil sands can be a dirty business, say opponents. The oil sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. It is a heavy, black, thick oil. Oil sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state. Instead, tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or openpit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. These methods require a huge amount of energy and water and produce a large amount of carbon emissions. Environmental groups that have long spoken out against the oil sands projects got some political backing in the United States in June when a group of mayors from large U.S. cities spoke out against the oil sands, as did presumptive Democratic candidate for U.S. president Barack Obama?s senior energy advisor. During a convention of large-city mayors in Miami, FL, Alberta?s oil sands were singled out in a nonbinding resolution calling for national guidelines to track the lifecycle impact of different types of fossil fuels. The resolution urges cities not to use unconventional sources of energy with a large carbon footprint, such as liquid coal and oil shale and oil sands.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

Imaging spectroscopy is a relatively new remote sensing tool that provides a rapid method to screen entire mining districts for potential sources of surface acid drainage. An imaging spectrometer known as the Airborne Visible/InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) measures light reflected from the surface in 224 spectral channels from 0.4 - 2.5 µm. Spectral data from this instrument were used to evaluate mine waste at the California Gulch Superfluid Site near Leadville, Colorado. Here, the process of pyrite oxidation at the surface produces acidic water that is gradually neutralized as it drains away from mine waste, depositing a central jarosite zone surrounded by a jarosite + goethite zone, in turn surrounded by a goethite zone with a discontinuous hematite rim zone. Leaching tests show that pH is most acidic in the jarosite and jarosite + goethite zones and is near-neutral in the goethite zone. Measurements indicate that metals leach from minerals and amorphous materials in the jarosite + goethite and jarosite zones at concentrations 10 - 50 times higher than from goethite zone minerals. Goethite zones that fully encircle mine waste may indicate some attenuation of leachate metals and thus reduced metal loading to streams. The potential for impact by acidic drainage is highest where streams intersect the jarosite and jarosite + goethite zones. In these areas, metal-rich acidic dace runoff may flow directly into streams. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates (U.S. EPA, 1998) that mineral maps made from AVIRIS data at Leadville have accelerated remediation efforts by two years and saved over $2 million in cleanup costs.

The WTBAL computer program for evaluating material balances for minerals processing flowsheets was developed at the MRC and has been in general use for a number of years. This paper reports on two enhancements to the basic MTBAL routine. The original program accounted for errors in the process measurements and used estimates of measurement variability to calculate stream weights. Unfortunately, the estimate of measurement variability was fixed over all streams. In the enhanced version of MATBAL, named IMTBL, the program equations and their solution procedure have been modified to allow the estimated variability in a process measurement to vary from stream to stream. The .second enhancement involves making MTBAL interactive. As such, the user now prescribes his information in an easy-to-use fashion in a conversational mode via a terminal. Finally, an assessment of the feasibility of implementing IMTBL on microcomputer systems will also be reported.

A Setaram C-80 heat flux micro- calorimeter was used to study the surface and interfacial properties of fine coal particles in water containing flotation agents via heat of immersion measurements. Heat of immersion (?Himm) is usually a small exothermic quantity and can be used' to characterize a solid in terms of its relative hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity. The effects of coal type, surface oxidation, mineral matter content, kerosene concentration, and pH on the wetting characteristics were investigated. Results obtained from the calorimetry experiments correlated well with results from independent flotation experiments.

"Mineworkers are routinely tasked with making critically important decisions about whether or not a hazard presents an imminent danger. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health collected formative data to investigate mine safety professional perspectives on workplace examinations, which revealed a potential gap in how mineworkers are assessing risk. During interviews, participants revealed not having a systematic methodology for mineworkers to use to determine if a hazard is considered imminent danger. In this paper, we identify and describe three distinct categories of imminent danger complexity and discuss potential steps that could lead to improved identification of imminent danger situations. Finally, we identify potential practices to incorporate into risk management efforts, including feedback, communication and specialized training, to increase awareness of imminent danger situations. Sporosarcina ureae was able to grow in the presence of tip to 10-ppm L-asparagine complexed gold. However, 10 ppm Au3+ was found to be highly toxic to Sporosarcina ureae, killing 109 bacteria/mL within a few seconds. To compare the effects of these responses on gold mobility, an in vitro bacterial biofilm model was developed to examine the interaction be¬tween Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold or L-asparagine gold complexes in gravity fed columns. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80% and 90% over a period of one week. But, as the available cellular reactive sites became saturated, immobilization decreased to 14% within two weeks. In the L¬asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization in the cytoplasm occurred at a high rate (80% to 90%) throughout the experi¬ment, with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae. The bacterial immobilization and detoxification of L-asparagine¬complexed ionic gold was associated with a low molecular weight, i.e, <5,000 dalton (atomic mass unit), intracellular protein fraction. This peptide-complexed gold would allow for the continued biogeochemical cycling of gold under ambient (<100°C) surface or near-surface conditions.

A pneumatic impact breaker is used to fragment the rock at the shaft bottom, replacing the drill and blast cycle. A backhoe-type mucker removes the broken rock. The operators are in protective cabs below the bottom work deck in the shaft. Preliminary testing has been accomplished at underground and surface test sites in Arizona. Seven, approximately 6.4 m deep by 7.3 m-diameter (21 ft by 24 ft) test holes, (a total of 45 m (148 ft)), were recently excavated in various rock types, including jointed and massive quartz monzonite and rhyolite. An average advance rate of .4 m/hr (1.24 ft/hr) has been achieved. This includes breaking and mucking the rock. Further data is being sought from an in-shaft demonstration.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicron range, and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicron range. Since dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using impactor-type size selector (diesel particulate matter impactor, DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) represent an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage being that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device, and eventually a reduction of its effective particle cut size – though, when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions present for this study, effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal by the end of the study period. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicron particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Due to their work around large equipment in confined spaces, underground miners have some of the highest exposures to DPM (EPA, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as “soot”, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the NIOSH 5040 Standard Method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007 and Birch, 2016)."

Major interrelated factors to be considered in assessing the impact of air pollution control regulations on coal are: (I) the fuel and fuel-related limitations of such regulations; (2) the rate of adoption and areal scope of the regulations; and (3) the availability of fuels and fuel-burning equipment to meet the requirements. A growing number of regulations contain provisions limiting the emissions of sulfur oxides or the sulfur content of fuels or both. With few exceptions, these limitations have not yet become fully effective in those areas which have already adopted regulations, and pertinent details of future regulations or legislation for most other areas are unknown at this time. Sufficient information is not avail- able to determine the availability of low-sulfur fuels at various demand and price levels, and large-scale commercial feasibility of sulfur-oxides removal processes and equipment is believed to be some years away. Accordingly, with the many uncertainties and unknowns, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations or legislation on coal.

This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The objective of this research was to conduct field-scale experiments at an operating surface coal mine in order to determine the impact of the bucket fill factor on dragline production rate and energy consumption. Data collected from a dragline monitoring system were recorded in a specifically designed software tool and the relationship among these parameters was established. an algorithm for the determination of the ?best? fill factor was developed and integrated in the software. It was determined for the analyzed dragline in the mine that energy consumption in the digging phase can be reduced by 36% and production rate can be increased by 1.4% for a bucket fill factor of about 80%, a fill distance of 19.8 m (65 ft) (i.e., 3.1 bucket lengths) and a bucket fill time of 15 sec. the method developed and applied in this study may help dragline operators to determine the fill factor that will increase production rates and reduce energy consumption in specific surface coal mines. Energy costs have had a serious impact on all basic industries today. This is due to the significant amount of energy that is used to convert natural resources into usable products. Other factors such as transportation with its major energy requirement and materials employed in processing that have already required significant energy input for their manufacture accordingly influence delivered cost to the user. The farmer is a good example of this. While his large capital investment for land, machines, and buildings is highly impacted by today&apos;s interest rates, his chemical fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides as well as those same machines and transportation costs for his products have also been seriously affected by energy costs. With the many unit operations involved in mining and mineral processing, several of which require significant inputs of energy, one can only conclude that this industry has experienced a great increase in percentage of total cost for energy alone. Fuerstenau (1975) indicated that the minerals industry used about 12.5% of the total energy produced in the US. McNulty (1983) listed the total energy requirements for the production of 0.9 t (1 st) of various metals including the energy consumed in the manufacture of supplies employed, such as tires, explosives, chemicals, grinding media, etc. (Table 1).

At the beginning of the 20th century, barite was a mineral of minor importance in the United States. Its primary use was to extend lead oxide in white paint. Barite also added the special qualities of hiding power and flatness to paint. Because white lead sometimes turns black or yellow and barite does not, ground barite became a pigment on its own merit. Barium chloride was added to bricks before fi ring to stop efflorescence when exposed to weather. Barium carbonate or nitrate added luster and brilliance to glass. Barium chemicals were added to refining sugar, enameling iron, making oilcloths and paper collars, and in the manufacture of paper, artificial ivory, rubber and lithopone. Lithopone became a major paint ingredient in the 1920s; its use lasted until the 1950s, peaking at 150 kt (165,000 st) of barite in 1937 and 1947 for the manufacture of lithopone. Later in the 20th century, titanium dioxide replaced lead oxide, barite and zinc oxide in the coatings industry. In the 21st century, barite is used as a filler, extender or weighting agent in products such as paints, plastics and rubber. Some specific uses include its use in brake and clutch pads for automobiles, automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss, to add weight to rubber mud flaps on trucks and to add weight to the cement jacket around petroleum pipelines under water. In the metals casting industry, barite is part of mold release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks X-ray and gamma ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high density concrete for radiation shielding around X-ray units in hospitals, nuclear power plants and university nuclear research facilities. Ultra-pure barite consumed as liquid is used as a contrast medium in medical X-ray examinations. Barite is the raw material for barium chemicals, such as barium carbonate, which is an ingredient in faceplate glass in the cathode-ray tubes of televisions and computer monitors. In the 21st century, barite industrial uses accounts for an estimated 78 kt/a (86,000 stpy) in the United States.
