In-situ soil washing using surfactants shows great potential to remove hydrophobic organics from subsurface environment. Lab scale soil washing experiment were performed using Sodium Dodecylsulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant, and anthracene, a highly hydrophobic compound. The results of this research show that solubility of anthracene increases linearly with an increase in SDS concentration above the critical micelle concentration. Furthermore, SDS can be effective in removing anthracene from contaminated sand.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.

"The “Biohydrometallurgical Center for Strategic Elements (BHMZ)” is a cooperation of 13 departments of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg fostering interdisciplinary research along the whole (bio-) hydrometallurgical process chain to extract indium and germanium from sulphide ores. Research comprises methods to (i) bring the respective metal from the source material into aqueous solution and (ii) different approaches to extract pure metal or metal-containing materials from the solution. Within the BHMZ the Department of Underground Mining Methods deals with the design and implementation of an underground testing facility for bacterial in-situ stope leaching in its own “Research and Educational Mine”. The intention is to investigate innovative approaches for leaching technologies by crack initiation due to hydraulic fracturing or water pressure blasting under consideration of leaching kinetics and underground conditions. It is planned to set up two testing units comparing energy input and the metal output of conventional (blasting) as well as one of the innovative technologies. Aim of subproject is to establish an innovative and sustainable method ready for up-scaling. BACKGROUND Metals like copper and zinc mainly occur as sulphide ores in nature. Due to the insolubility of these sulphide minerals the respective metal is commonly extracted by pyrometallurgical processing methods. These methods require several steps of enrichment of concentrates such as flotation and roasting (Figure 1) under extensive energy utilization. Additionally, this arouses the emission of sulphur dioxide gas which can have a negative impact on the environment in form of acid rain, as long it is not caught by sulphuric acid facilities (Schippers et al. 2011). However, to treat the ore on the surface either open pit or underground mining operations are necessary. This implies operation steps from excavating, loading, and conveying/hauling, to dumping with the sub-processes crushing and stashing. Due to the tendency of increasing depth, more complex ores and decreasing ore grades of the mineable deposits as well as increasing energy and environmental costs these conventional mining and processing methods become in general more costly and difficult to apply. Hence, hydrometallurgical processes and especially the suitability of bioleaching as an alternative in-situ method for future mining projects should be examined. Leaching by means of microorganisms is a combination of mining and processing by converting the insoluble metal into an aqueous form. This technology is an economically beneficial and environmentally friendly alternative to pyrometallurgical processing methods especially for primary and secondary low grade ores. Mainly the extraction of copper but also of zinc and lead from sulphide ores is state-of-the-art in surface leaching operations like heap and dump leaching (Figure 1)."

The results of a study are presented in which gaseous oxygen was dissolved in the leach liquor at concentrations of the order of 300 parts per million. This oxygen-containing solution was injected into portions of a field being operated on a commercial basis with hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Comparative results indicate that were concentrations and production rates were essentially equivalent with these two oxidants.

The back-filling operation at Olympic Dam mine supports a 9.8 million tonne per year (Mtla) underground Longhole Open Stoping operation. It involves a combination of Cemented Aggregate Fill (CAF), Surface Rockfill and Underground Rockfill. The fill material is introduced from the surface via bore-holes into the top of the stopes. Due to the deleterious effects of the dust and the thickness of the atmosphere in the stope it is not possible to view the filling process. The need for a means to measure the filling process is driven by the stopes, which have both rock and CAF fill placed in them. The large volumes and high relative cost of CAF makes the minimization of CAF fill a business priority. Incorrect filling can lead to the sterilization of ore reserve. The use of millimeter wave radar to view through the haze to give real-time data on the relative positions of the different fill masses is being developed as an in-stope fill control device. This paper reviews the salient points of the technology and its potential use in the back-filling operation at Olympic Dam. The broader potential of this technology for use in the mining industry by 'seeing' through water and dust laden environments such as that found in stopes and ore passes is discussed.

Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft). The cost with the road volume is 2.6 million x 3 = $7.8 million.

To find out if there are any potential savings in "in-the-wall haulage for open pits," the Swedish companies ASEA and Kiruna-Truck in 1984 gave us financial support to study this solution in more detail. In the study, the use of in-the-wall haulage was studied for three hypothetical open pits with different sizes and shapes. Annual ore production rates also varied. A part of this thorough study was published by the Swedish Mining Research Foundation (see Report F 8444, "The Use of Electric Trucks and In-the-Wall Haulage in Open-Pit Mining," in Swedish with an English Summary). Although in-the-wall haulage is of interest in some open pits, the local terrain is important for profitability. The authors do not think in-the-wall haulage is of any major interest for the mining industry. The following is a summary of some of the author's findings. To place the haul road in the wall is not of interest in open pits with declining metal contents in the bedrock. In such mines, the volumes from the haul roads will not yield revenues. The cost per m3 for an underground haul road is much higher than for a haul road in the pit. This means that it is only of interest to place the haul road in the wall when mining gets deeper than about 50 m (165 ft). In-the-wall haul roads will reduce flexibility in the pit, and it will make necessary the use of smaller equipment with lower productivity and higher costs per ton. As Hustrulid, et al. show (Table 4), excavation savings of material hauled are very low, $0.10 to $0.25/t (0.09 to 0.27 per st). The extra operating cost, due to lower productive equipment, will normally be much higher and thus destroy the whole idea with in-the-wall haulage. If electric trucks are profitable for in-the-wall haulage, it is normally also profitable to use electric trolley assist for trucks on the haul road in the pit. But the profitability of using electric power is different in different countries, and depends on the relation between the cost for electric power and diesel fuel. In the US, diesel fuel is inexpensive compared with electricity, but in a country like Sweden, diesel fuel is much more expensive. In most open pits, the trucks have to move a considerable distange from the loader until they reach a final haul road in the wall. A trolley line along such temporary haul roads will be exposed to flyrock. It is normally less expensive to perform rock support from the open pit than from underground ramps in the wall. In Fig. 8, Hustrulid et al. gives the impression that the underground haul roads will be very close to each other. This is seldom the case. Figure 1 shows a haul road in the wall. The haul road passes through each cross-section only once. Arranging a reliable dewatering and rock support system from only one underground ramp is probably impossible. Many more drifts are therefore necessary. In our report, we also studied what would happen if the final pit slope is increased by 5°, using underground drifts in the wall. Our conclusion was that, the extra cost for drifts, rock support, pumps, etc. destroys the whole idea, and that it was better to accept a higher stripping ratio with the haul road in the pit and to use conventional low-cost open pit equipment. Finally, we think it is would be difficult to try to reduce the safety factor when determining the slope angle by moving the haul road in the wall. Minimizing the risk for pit wall collapse is also important with in-the-wall haulage, primarily because men and equipment will be working in the pit, but also to guarantee many accesses between the pit and the haul road in the wall.

Many technical professionals (tp)* desire to occupy upper level management positions. But career paths for most scientists and engineers do not extend beyond their specific disciplines. This is unfortunate. Our technical frontiers are expanding so rapdily that it is difficult, if not impossible, to make sound top management decisions without understanding the technical complexities involved. Technical professionals often are not considered for upper level management positions because they lack the managerial and interpersonal skills necessary to become successful administrators. You've heard this before, but a key component of these skills is the ability to communicate. Technical professionals are often unable to communicate as well as they should with nontechnical professionals and nonprofessionals within the organizations that employ them. Communication is important for managerial success Communication is the network of interactions whereby knowledge and understanding are conveyed from one social set to another (Flippo and Munsinger, 1982). In order to be successful, managers must not only be "good" communicators, they must be "effective" communicators as well. Good communication occurs when managers are able to formulate and transmit their messages in such a way that they are received and understood. Effective communication goes one step further: It occurs when recipients accept messages as legitimate and respond to these messages in the manner desired. Before promotion into upper level positions, managers must have developed organizational skills (planning, decision making, organizing, and controlling) and interpersonal skills (directing, influencing, and motivating). Applying these skills effectively is difficult without a highly refined ability to communicate. Effective communication, then, is basic to managerial success. Nowhere, perhaps, has the importance of being able to communicate effectively been emphasized more than in Mintzberg's landmark study of managerial roles (Mintzberg, 1973). Mintzberg's results indicate that executives typically averaged 36 written and 16 verbal contacts a day. These contacts were both important and trivial. They generally occurred in a random manner. Time spent on each varied. Scheduled meetings averaged over an hour. Desk work, telephone calls, and unscheduled meetings required an average of 15 minutes or less. Why technical professionals have difficulty communicating Three reasons why technical professionals do not communicate well are: • The work motivational patterns and personal attitudes of technical professionals are not conducive to effective communication. • Students in technical professions are not encouraged by educational institutions to develop their communication skills. • Organizations do not insist that all technical professionals be able to communicate in the language of business. The work motivational patterns of most technical professionals are indicative of internals and high achievers (Hunt, Salisbury, and Whittington, 1968). As internals, they believe they control their own destinies. As high achievers, they believe that task accomplishment is a primary indicator of success. To ensure a task is completed in the manner desired, tp's attempt to structure and define work situations so they alone are responsible for results. TPs consider the task accomplished when they, and perhaps other tp's, are satisfied with the results. From the tp's perspective, the task may have been completed. From a communication standpoint, two other factors may apply. First, solving the problem required very little interaction (and thus, communication) with others. Second, the tp's, considering the task accomplished, have little concern for how their "technical" answers will be translated to nontechnical persons needing

This study examines the accuracy of area sampling for measuring the dust exposure of mining machine operators in coal mines. The specific objective of this research was to find locations where an area sampler might work better than earlier studies have indicated. The results show that fixed-location area sampling cannot accurately predict the dust exposure of a machine operator, even when the best fixed location is sought, the fixed location is quite close to the operator and the bias due to the dust concentration gradient is corrected. Industrial hygienists have known for many years that area sampling is unsuitable for measuring air contaminant exposures in the workplace. Near contaminant sources, the dilution air and the contaminants are not evenly mixed. Therefore, when workers are near contaminant sources, exposure measurements must be taken from the worker's breathing zone to be accurate.

St. Joseph Lead Company has been paying incentive bonuses for well over 40 years. In 1958 almost half of St. Joe's 1,860 employees in Southeast Missouri received some form of incentive bonus in addition to their guaranteed wages. There are very few payroll jobs in St. Joe s Southeast Missouri organization that lend themselves to a reasonably good measurement of production or quality, or both, where an incentive bonus is not paid. The term "Incentive Bonus" is used to differentiate betwen bonuses that are based on quantity or quality of work, and those that are merely additional pay of a standard amount per hour or day because of an employee being temporarily assigned to some unusual task, An employee temporarily assigned to a job where the working conditions make the job performance unusually difficult or where a special skill is used is often given a bonus of some standard amount per hour or shift in addition to his usual rate. This is merely a convenient way of paying something extra without disturbing the normal rate structure. Actually, it is differential pay similar to that almost universally paid for evening and night shift work. Bonuses of that type are not being considered in this paper. The basic reason or theory for paying incentive bonuses 9s to get improved production at lower cost, Unfortunately, it is often difficult, if not impossible, to find a yardstick by which it can be definitely proved that a particular bonus plan is accomplishing its purpose, It becomes, then, a matter of judgment on the part of management personnel as to the value of the bonus plan. The fact that St. Joe Lead Company has continued to pay bonuses for over 40 yews and has increased the number of bonus schedules used attests to a definite belief that they are beneficial to the company's successful operations.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

As tunnel boring machine technology has expanded, so has its range of application. Tunneling machines (TBM's) are tackling tasks today that fifteen years ago were considered "inappropriate". A case in point is incline/decline TBM boring. An incline or decline bore presents peculiar design considerations that differentiate it from a horizontal bore. This paper reviews those design considerations as they apply to TBM's, backup, muck handling and other tunneling subsystems. In addition, several abbreviated case studies are presented. By the review of real life tunneling techniques as well as design considerations, the "appropriateness" of TBM incline/ decline boring today becomes apparent. INCLINE Introduction In contemplating the impact of incline versus horizontal tunnel boring system design, the obvious consideration is gravity. Up-hill boring can be quite different than horizontal boring. Muck, water and machine weight all tend to slide down the incline. In addition, hydraulic and lubrication systems if unaltered, will find their fluids pooled in the lower corners contentedly ignoring such higher elevation items as gears and bearings. Coal and rock pillar design is critical not only for mineral extraction but also for the safety of the mine operators. Pillar strength can be estimated through numerous empirical formulas that are available in the literature, which are typically based on a statistical analysis of case study data. The limitation of most of these equations is that they only considered the width to height ratio and in situ rock or coal strength for pillars in horizontal seams. The adoption of such equations to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams may overestimate the pillar strength and ultimately lead to a poor pillar design. This paper will discuss different techniques that can be used to estimate pillar strength in inclined seams as well as present preliminary modeling results for stress redistribution around inclined pillars. Factors in the parametric analysis include pillar shapes, geometry, and seam inclination.

"INTRODUCTIONEdilmac dei F.lli Maccabelli (hereinafter referred to as Edilmac) has recently developed a special civil engineering application using the Raise Boring technology with the assistance of Inrock MGS (Magnetic Guidance System). Applying the Paratrack Magnetic Guidance System coupled with a directional mud motor to the drill string allows a better accuracy compared to standard drilling, as showed in our tests. This is the first time the Paratrack System has been applied to the Raise Boring technology. RAISE BORING METHOD STATEMENT The Raise Boring technology was born in North America during the Sixties. In 1962, Ingersoll and Robbins were the first companies to produce Raise Boring Machines (RBM). The technology was first used in the underground mine industry, in order to bore ventilation shafts and passes through different levels, thus reducing the cost of haulage. The Raise Boring method is only feasible in stable rock conditions. The Raise Boring method consists of drilling a small diameter pilot hole that reaches a tunnel located at the bottom of the drilled hole. Once the pilot hole reaches the tunnel, a reamer head is installed at the end of the drill string and pulled up, creating the hole with the designed diameter (Figures 1 and 2). The main equipment, which is required to perform Raise Boring activities, is the following: •,An RBM; •,A tricone bit; •,Drilling rods; •,A reaming head; The standard mucking of the pilot hole is done with water or bentonite mud. For the last 30 years, Edilmac has developed a mucking process, which uses compressed air with the addition of foam or a small amount of water for dust control.Pilot hole tricone. The drilling of the pilot hole is usually performed with a tricone bit having a diameter between 11” (27.61 cm) and 15” (38.10 cm) (Figure 3). High strength rods. They generally have a diameter ranging from 10” (25.40 cm) to 12 ?” (32.70 cm) (Figure 4), depending on the length and the final diameter of the shaft."

Introduction Opencast surface mining requires blasthole drilling to achieve mine planning. No single method of mining is right for all conditions. Occasionally, mine planners introduce a project with little regard to drilling and blasting. These costs are usually a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One drilling and blasting method that can be used to reduce overall mine expense is inclined or angle hole drilling. But inclined-hole drilling will not cut costs unless a set of required circumstances is met. Several conditions of mine design indicate the use of angle drilling. Geotechnical problems must first be analyzed. Primary considerations are safety, fragmentation, production, and maintenance. Secondary considerations are, in some instances, reduction in amount of explosives, which lowers blasting costs; reduction of practical fragmentation beyond blasting pattern limits; and reductions in overall costs due to reduced volume of excavation. Future trends in blasthole drilling may include incorporation of drill equipment designed to allow rapid change from vertical to inclined drilling. This will allow the operator to adapt to changing hole requirements with minimal production loss. Another improvement may be the ability to chamber holes at any elevation throughout the hole depth. This will allow more charge to be placed at strategic locations to improve fragmentation. Merits of Drilling Inclined Holes Drilling is performed to create voids for explosives. It is done either to recover minerals or to excavate a volume of earth. The manner of mining or excavation can greatly affect the economics of the overall project. Many innovations and methods have been tried, but the most practical and economical is still drilling holes and using explosives to fragment the material. To break up the material, the practice has been to place charges within the mass. This is done by drilling holes of a specific diameter and depth into the material. The holes are of such magnitude as to develop sufficient energy to break or loosen this material, providing for easier removal. In general, more open or exposed faces must exist to aid material breakage when blasting. Inclined drilling can be advantageous in open-cut mining with highwall depths of at least 24 m (80 ft). A minimum of two faces are open in open-cut mining and the material can be thrown outward to cover pre-mined volume. This cuts cost by eliminating the need to remove or relocate a large portion of material. Sometimes the material is of such a mass that more energy per unit is required to loosen it than can easily be done by blasting vertically. Inclined holes allow a more uniform loading of drilled holes. The unit of energy is raised, so little or no secondary blasting is required. This usually comes about only if the main plan calls for drilling holes deeper than 24 m (80 ft). For shallow holes, spacing and burden can be made closer to allow sufficient energy to blast the toe. The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political, and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). In other words, mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure, and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (The Importance Of Mining In Modern Society, 2024). The mining industry is closely linked to a country’s economy and activities related to natural resources. The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira & McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure, and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Importance Of Mining - Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, diversity, and inclusion brings us to an interesting topic: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge and requires collaborative efforts (Singh & Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This research proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive Mining for Sustainable Development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the Creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations, and advance toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, establishing the company as a global change agent.

I have been asked by the Society of Mining Engineers to present a paper on Inco Limited's Indonesian nickel project as a case study in the financing of large overseas mining projects. I welcome this opportunity It is a story worth telling not only because the project itself represents a significant human achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. The paper will be divided into four sections: (i) a brief history of the project, (ii) a critical appraisal of the project's financing plan in terms of the goals that we sought to achieve, (iii) some comments on certain factors underlying the relative success of the financing plan, and (iv) the contributions that the engineering staffs must make to a successful financing plan. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Limited has been asked to submit a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979.
