The competitiveness of the EU manufacturing industry has come to the forefront of EU politics. The systematic monitoring of developments and the review of the state of the competitiveness of economies and enterprises was identified as an essential component in this process. Work is currently being carried out within Enterprise and Industry Directorate-General in order to analyse the different factors that influence the competitiveness of the non-energy extractive industry. Such an assessment should help to identify policies and actions which could contribute to and enhance the competitiveness of the industry. Assessing the competitiveness and sustainability of the industry implies the need for reliable, consistent data. One important example of how this need is being addressed, is the development of sustainable development indicators (SDI) for the EU non-energy extractive industry. These seek to monitor the industry’s performance and provide a platform for openness and discussion. Work was started on the development of SDIs in 2000, and the first report was published in February 2004.

Associated with cordilleran intrusives of intemediate to acidic composition, gold/silver ores are generally found in the intruded host rocks which are adjacent to these intrusives. Generally precious metal deposits lie further from the intrusives than allied base metal deposits. For vented intrusives, the associated volcanics may constitute the intruded rock and form the host for precious metal accumulation. Potential field methods, particularly magnetics, can help to define unseen boundaries of intrusive systems and thus can point to generalized prospecting targets. Other clues arise from the intrusive system type, its emplacement fracturing, the host rock type and local magnetic changes caused by mineralization processes.

The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

Pad construction costs can impact the overall economics of heap leach projects. Pad construction costs for single-and double-lined pads, using various designs, are listed for a typical small and large project. Double-lined pads are now more often required by regulatory agencies. Unless such designs reduce the risk of site specific contamination significantly, the extra costs cannot be justified from an economical viewpoint. Specific attention is given to the short project life (typically five years) of heap leach projects. A few numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the overall economic impacts of these costs on economic parameters.

The use of pneumatic methods for measuring interface level in flotation columns is analysed. It is shown that errors can vary over a wide range (e.g. 40 cm. in one industrial application) depending on bubble size, particle size, bubble loading, liquid hold-up and bulk slurry density. Accurate measurements (+ 5 cm) can be obtained by measuring intensive properties of the froth near the interface. Methods based on the measurement of temperature and conductivity are described and analysed. Control of the interface level using these measurements subject to various disturbances is demonstrated.

A case study is provided that highlights the successful use of high efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) adapted from the oil and gas industry for a large scale, open pit mine dewatering operation. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito Mine, Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit development areas in Zacatecas, Mexico. At the time of publication (July 2012), there were 18 vertical bedrock dewatering wells producing an average flow rate of 350 liters per second (lps) from the Peñasco and Chile Colorado development areas. Average pumping rate per well was 18 lps, with a maximum of 44 lps. The depth of wells varies from 330 m to 500m, and includes both in-pit and perimeter (ex-pit) pumping centers. A network of 50 piezometers was used to monitor the response of groundwater levels to pumping. Since dewatering operations were initiated in 2007, groundwater elevations decreased overall, from approximately 1950 m above sea level (masl) to around 1625 masl, for a total of 340 m of drawdown. The pit floor elevation was approximately 1655 masl. All of the producing wells were constructed with 16-inch boreholes, completed with 10-inch diameter blank casing and louvered screen sections and equipped with ESPs. The application of ESPs has proven to be highly effective in the case of Peñasquito?s dewatering operations. Noted advantages include the following: ? Small diameter pump allows use of smaller diameter boreholes (16 inches) and casing / screens (10 inches) reducing well drilling and construction costs ? Greater application range for flow rate and total dynamic head ? Variable speed drive systems for greater energy efficiency and flow rate optimization ? Integration of downhole instrumentation into the motor and pump assembly The advantages and benefits of using high efficiency ESPs revolutionized the dewatering program at Peñasquito open pit mine as evidenced by the number of deep vertical well installations and high dewatering flow rates and total dynamic head requirements.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mine that uses large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity and distance. The system was also used to provide historical information to plan the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. The Coteau Properties Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corp. The company was formed in 1972 to supply lignite from its Beulah-Hazen coal reserve to a coal gasification project and an electrical generating facility located near Beulah, ND. The reserve consists of a single coal seam between 3 and 7 m (10 to 23 ft) thick. The overburden above the coal is predominately glacial tills and clays and ranges from 6 m (20 ft) to more than 60 m (200 ft) thick.

Studies of sedimentary humic acids by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), stable isotopes, and elemental analysis show they are derived by oxidative degradation of complex plant macromolecules that are insoluble in aqueous or organic solvents. The mechanism by which humic acids originate is fundamental to our understanding of the role of organic matter in ore deposition, because these substances can complex and mobilize a number of metal ions. The organic matter associated with uranium ores of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico and Carlin-type disseminated gold deposits of Nevada has certain organic geochemical characteristics that suggest an origin from humic acids.

A series of difficult ground conditions causing high groundwater inflows and hazardous gas intrusion abruptly halted the construction of a 6.4-meter (21-foot) finished diameter and 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) long tunnel planned to serve as a 4-millioncubic meters (1-billion gallon) per day capacity river outfall for treated wastewater. Some 808-meters (2,650-feet) section of the constructed tunnel, TBM, and all other tunneling equipment were completely flooded with hydrogen sulfide laden artesian groundwater. The subsequent pumping and tunnel recovery efforts were unsuccessful and the tunnel was abandoned. In the end, the construction contract was terminated and options to redesign and reconstruct the project were re-evaluated to maximize the use of already constructed tunnel facilities such as the construction access and inter-mediate shafts and six outfall diffuser shafts in the river.

Computer control of the minerals beneficiation process is limited by a lack of adequate sensors to provide information on the current state of the process. Recent reduction in the cost of image acquisition and powerful inexpensive computers make use of computer vision as sensory input in process control a possibility. In the phosphate industry, the amount of apatite in phosphate tailings is estimated by inspection. For machine vision, a simple 256 x 512 color image of the tailings was captured via an inexpensive color video camera on an IBM PC. Initially, the image is converted to gray scale and displayed on an EGA color monitor. A program was written which identifies the different constituents of the sample by analyzing the gray scale levels for the digitized picture. In other instances the minerals are identified by their relative color intensities. The amount of each constituent is determined with good accuracy from the area it occupies on the image.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. In 1986 the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that can substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards simply by relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM ongoing health and safety research efforts to reduce and control dust and noise and to reduce accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports progress of the research that is developing and will demonstrate the technologies required for the computer-assisted tele-remote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems, and roof bolting machines.

"The Vermilion range extends from the vicinity of Tower to and beyond the ""international boundary, crossing into Canada at the eastern end of Hunter's Island. The strike is about east and west and the dip approximately vertical, with a westerly pitch. The underground workings at this mine are some 4,500 feet in extent east and west, and over 1,500 feet in depth. The structure here is probably the most complex in the Lake Superior iron districts. Above the iron bearing formation, geologically, comes the basal conglomerate of the Lower Huronian, carrying large boulders and Masses of the iron bearing rocks."

Endako Mine is an open pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, approximately 160 km. west of Prince George. Production for the latter part of 1992 is expected to average at 63,500 tonnes per day of which 27,000 tpd constitute the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 15 to 19 cu. yd. electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 121;.1 inch electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas called the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the South East stage of the Endako Pit while the stripping is carried out in the South Wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM/BM/flotation circuits. The majority of the Molybdenum Sulphide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade Molybdenum Oxide (MoO3) while a portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure Molybdenum Sulphide (MoS2) "Ultrapure" product.

Excavation and loading are primary operations in the surface mine production chain, constituting a significant component of production costs. This makes excavation and loading important cost centers that need to be improved to lower production costs. Optimizing the design and use of excavators will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations, and this requires a thorough understanding of the soil-tool interaction process. Modeling the interaction process accurately is the key to this optimization. Experimental and analytical methods have provided limited information on the behavior of soils during excavation. Finite element (Fe) analysis of soil-cutting blade interaction produces some advantages over experimental and analytical methods. However, the soil constitutive equations used in most of the available Fe analyses fail to adequately model the plastic behavior of the soil. This work uses Fe modeling to study the behavior of formation-cutting blade interactions in dozer excavation. The formation is modeled as a nonlinear elastoplastic material using the modified cam-clay (mCC) model. The model accounts for soil-tool interface friction, and progressive and continuous cutting at the blade tip. The results provide soil forces, a progressive developed failure zone and soil displacement fields. The sensitivity analysis of changes in blade angle on cutting force shows that the cutting force increases with increasing blade angle. The cutting depth of the blade had a similar effect on blade cutting force. Increasing the depth of cut increases the required cutting force. Increasing the coefficient of friction at the soil blade interface increases the blade cutting force. Reducing the coefficient of friction at the soil blade interface from 0.3 to 0.05 reduces the cutting force by 22.3%. The percentage represents the maximum potential savings in blade cutting force. This research initiative advances the frontiers of soil-tool interactions during excavations to expand the limited knowledge in this critical area.

A PC, image-based, on-line instrument for measuring coarse particle size on a conveyor belt is under development. The hardware and software required to implement such a system are discussed, including the interface for the special image-acquisition hardware. The system concept is given with examples to illustrate the step-by-step procedure for the implementation of image-processing algorithms.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. "Mining industry as a source of raw material is essential to society however, it lacks of good reputation due to the type of management historically applied to many of its social and environmental impacts. It is argued that this situation has hampered the obtaining of social license to operate of a lot of mining projects around the world. The last considerations are very common in Latin American countries. As a result, the mining sector has understood that the viability of the business long term is associated with more profit for the shareholders but also with activities that improve the livelihoods of local communities, enhance the capabilities of local governments and preserve the ecosystems around the projects. Nevertheless, recent studios have shown that most of the current advances to incorporate sustainability concepts in mining have been mainly focused on control and the prevention of environmental and social impacts of extractive activities. Thus, contributing to the development of territories around mining projects constitutes a fundamental aspect of the business competitiveness through reducing cost and risks of stopping projects, innovating new ways of relationship with stakeholders, improving the level of reputation of the industry as well as its position in the market. However, this contribution requires formal strategies and models that enable companies understand the different resources in the territories where their mining activities are developed and those resource transformations, in order to establish the best way to articulate the project with the territory, pursuing an effective contribution to its development, truly sustainable over time even after the mine closure. CONTEXT Currently in the world but especially in developing countries such as Latin Americans, different stakeholders are increasingly vigilant of how mining companies carry out their activities in terms of socio-economic and environmental management of territories, not only for its impact on the livelihoods of the communities that inhabit them, but also because many demanders of raw materials -both countries and companies- have set sustainability standards as a prerequisite to establishing business relationships with mining companies, such as the recently declared Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 (UN, 2015). Accordingly, decide underinvest or not to invest in sustainability issues carries risks for mining companies. However, invest much in the wrong way may involve the same risks. Managers are concerned to ensure profits, and therefore they decide carefully how to invest in the areas of production, R & D or marketing. Likewise, they should think strategically about investing in initiatives related to sustainability. This if they really want that those investments in fact help to improve the competitiveness of the company. The mining industry benefits from natural capital that extracts, so it should implement strategies that lead to remunerate such benefit to the territories (Almaguer, 2007). One option is through the transformation of natural capital in other types of non-existent capital or poorly developed in their areas of influence. In this way, the value generated by the extraction of underground resources is shared and additionally contributing to improving the quality of life of the communities. Historically, mining industry has been into several problems to achieve this, which represents one of the aspects that has most influenced the current reputation of mining industry in some regions of Latin America. Many communities, local governments and civil society organizations continue to associate this activity with the destruction of the social fabric and ecosystems in the territories, and their opposition against companies working in the areas has led to affect the operational continuity of many projects (Hamann, 2003; Prno and Scott, 2012; Slack, 2012)."

Central system of ventilation, adopted almost universally in coal mines of India and elsewhere in the world, has often proved deficent in providing a cost effective solution to the acute ventilation problems of remote workings in many mines. Loss of air due to leakage through a number of stoppings, doors etc. and accumulation of heat and moisture by intake air on its way to a working through long and circuitous route are the main unavoidable reasons for low efficiency of the system, sluggish and oppressive ventilation of workings. Multi-zonal ventilation system using large diameter bore holes for feeding fresh air in the mine close to a working has been proposed as a viable economic alternative. The method promises to provide congenial environment at working faces without resorting to air conditioning or use of booster fan. Optimum location and diameter of bore holes as well as general design procedure have been dealt in the paper. Finally, the technical as well as economic advantages of the method over the conventional design have been highlighted with the help of a case study where ventilation system of an extensive shallow mine in Central India has been redesigned according to the old and the new concepts. The methodology is general enough for adoption elsewhere in other mines under similar circumstances.

Allmand exhibited its LSC 100Light Sequence Commander, the mining industry’s first automatic lighting and command control system. The system is available with all of Allmand’s portable light towers. The LSC100 uses a preset photocell sensor that allows the light tower to be automatically turned on or off. At dusk, the sensor engages the power unit and then activates the light. At dawn, the sensor automatically shuts off the light. The unit also features an eight-event digital timer that allows eight separate sequences daily. The LSC100’s sequenced light control ensures that the engine is started before the lights are turned on or off. This prevents possible generator damage that can occur if the unit is powered down under load. Also, a low-fuel shutdown sequence helps protect the generator from damage by automatically shutting down the unit when the fuel level reaches 10 percent. And the LSC100’s smart circuitry senses engine water temperature during startup, determines the glow-plug time requirement and schedules repeat intervals, if necessary, to start the diesel engine.
