INTRODUCTION In recent years several cities in the Eastern United States have constructed subway systems in deeply weathered igneous and metamorphic rocks. Portions of these transit tunnels and shafts have penetrated zones of saprolite. The purpose of this paper is to define saprolite and discuss saprolite behavior in terms of construction and design of tunnels and shafts. Saprolites are products of in situ weathering of rock, with properties intermediate between those of soil and rock. A well-developed weathering profile can be divided into zones of residual soil, saprolite, transition zone materials, weathered rock, and fresh rock. Saprolites are distinguished by a high degree of weathering and by retention of parent rock textures and discontinuities. These structures persist as relict features because of iso-volumetric weathering (Cleaves, 1974) and formation of intergranular bonds that give cohesion to the saprolitic material. As saprolite continues to weather, the bonds are broken, causing the saprolite to decompose and disintegrate into a true residual soil mass without relict structure. Saprolites may form from igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks, but are most easily recognized when derived from igneous and metamorphic rocks because of their inherent structures. The physical characteristics and properties of residual material vary as a function of mineralogic composition, structure, and discontinuities of its parent rock.

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. A study on fauna distribution and abundance is being conducted in the Giona Mountain, in central Greece, area of bauxite mining. The specific aims of the study are: a) to estimate and map the distribution of mammals, and especially of the Balkan chamois, b) to estimate and map the distribution and abundance of breeding birds, c) to count the bird species using the area during spring and autumn migration and winter, d) to update the list of mammal and bird species of the mountain, with emphasis on rare and endangered ones, according to 79/409, 92/43 EU Directives and other relevant conventions, e) to compare the bauxite mining areas and species distribution and assess the possible overlap and compatibility of mining activities - species conservation, f) to assess the possible habitat loss due to planned mining activities. All estimations of mammal species distribution and abundance are being carried out by fieldwork using spotlight during the night along selected routes. Especially for chamois, line transects and vantage points with the aid of telescopes and binoculars are being used. Birds are being counted with the point count method in randomly selected plots distributed in all available habitat types and altitudes. The species distribution and mining areas will appear on thematic maps with the aid of a geographical information system (GIS). Finally, solutions for environmentally compatible mining activity in the area will be proposed.

In ME'S 1994 Powder River Basin (PRB) coal transportation article, the lead author described some destinations pursued by the railroads. As with many destinations, though, they turned out to be merely stops on the way to places that have yet to be reached. Along the way, the railroads discovered that making it better is a continuous process, not just something done in several phases. This was always known but not at the awareness level that exists in 1998 railroad environments. This update of the 1994 article includes railroad companies' plans for the future of rail transportation in the PRB.

An improved mine environment is the single most critical factor affecting the health and safety of workers engaged in underground coal winning. A very important subclassification of this wide field is mine ventilation, which essentially deals with 'mine atmospheric environmental control.' To ensure proper mine atmospheric environmental control, adequate quantities of air must flow through working sections in the mine. In recent years much attention has been paid to the fan and its prime movers, but the efficient use of the fan output in the workings has not received an equal amount of investigation. In mechanically ventilated mines friction losses in main airways often account for 70 to 90 percent of the total pressure loss sustained in the system. Also the leakage losses are a serious detriment to the efficiency of mine ventilation systems. It is not uncommon to loose 60 to 70 percent of the air between the fan and the last open cross-cuts due to leakage directly into the return Proper assessment of these losses in simulating and projecting complex ventilation systems is vital. Network analysis of ventilation systems is not new. Scott and Hinsly (1951) presented the detailed mathematical framework. Since then work has been done in adopting this technique to analog, and within the past few years, to digital computers. Development of computer programs to solve ventilation network problems has been reported in United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, Germany, and the United States. The purpose of these programs is to serve as an experimental mine wherein analysis of proposed alternatives or ventilation planning can be tested. The great power of the computer as a planning tool lies in the ability to input empirical or Projected data into programs with predicting ability. But, however good a computer program is, unless fairly accurate input information is available accurately assessing the engineering factors of the ventilation system, the output will be suspect. Thus, to simulate and project mine ventilation systems, good estimates of leakage and friction factors are important. Yet, relatively little work has been done in the past three decades to determine these more realistically.

It is estimated that between 5 and 15 pounds of solid waste are generated monthly by each individual. Finding a final resting spot for such waste is an important matter. In the "good ole days," dumps of every description and condition were available. Not so now. Almost all states have adopted and are enforcing strict regulations regarding the disposition of solid waste. Many companies, owing to the nature of their business, have potentially good waste-disposal sites available. Cleveland Quarries Company falls in this group; but in spite of our having state and county permits, opposition by the local community denied us the opportunity to provide a needed local service.

During the last decade various modifications of room and pillar and sub-level methods have been tried in an effort to eliminate gob-fires, dangers from roof falls, surface subsidence and to increase efficiency of extraction in the Armutcuk Mine, Turkey. It was eventually decided that the most likely system to give maximum benefits in view of existing geological conditions and coal seam characteristics was a system of cut-and-fill stoping employing hydraulic stowing. This paper has attempted to examine the trends of working techniques of hydraulic stowing. In addition, the results achieved and technical problems involved are discussed.

Selectivity and recovery of many industrial minerals can be directly affected by the carbon length, degree of unsaturation, and melt point of fatty acids used as collectors. Examples of several modifications are provided based on actual experiences of commercial applications. A review of recent history indicates that fatty acid collectors are applicable from C9'C18 in carbon length, however, not for all minerals. The mesh size, density, and surface characteristics of the particular mineral, as well as other related operating conditions, are important in selecting the correct fatty acid configuration. A review of some past programs are submitted as a guideline in the selection of fatty acids and supported by isolated, successful examples demonstrating the effect of carbon length and unsaturation.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream pH is very important in leach mining and treatment of MIW (mining influenced water). On the production side, solution acidity can impact SX (solvent extraction) effectiveness through PLS (pregnant leach solution) and raffinate pH. Many older operations and legacy mining sites generate ARD (acid rock drainage) that is too weak for profitable metal production by conventional means and faces costly wastewater treatment for mitigation and disposal. For wastewater and environmental treatment, neutralization to precipitate and remove metal contaminants to clean the wastewater is the dominant approach. Traditional lime neutralization and precipitation is most often used but results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS); which focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources, has developed a new “reagentless” neutralization process. Electricity is utilized in its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform capability to controllably raise target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost approach yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. It can result in less sludge generation and enables possibilities to selectively recover contaminants as potentially saleable products for new revenue generation to offset further offset treatment costs. The continuously increasing rate of the non-renewable raw material consumption together with the production of immense volumes of solid wastes and effluents is one of the main characteristics of our modern society. This leads to an unconditional necessity to reduce the raw material and energy consumption and to recycle the used materials and products. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) constitutes a promising tool in this direction. LCA is a methodology, whose main purpose is the objective calculation and analysis of the environmental burdens of products, processes and activities as well as the estimation of the possibilities to perform environmental improvements in combination with the rational use of raw materials and energy. The purpose of this paper is to present the life cycle of marble and granite from the quarrying to the processing stage, including the transportation between the quarry and the processing plant, by quantifying the environmental impacts that derive from each stage and the evaluation of their potential effects to the environment and to human health.

"INTRODUCTION Productivity in Open Pit mines depend on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in Open Pit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad-hoc methodology for analyzing the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are sub-par with the expected production standards. STUDY OBJECTIVES The purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle or the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with pre-defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and determine corrective actions: • Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process; • Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste, and how they help to identify equipment performance; • Develop software interfaces to visualize the Alert System in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor; and • Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an Open Pit mine. PROBLEM STATEMENT Transporting material in Open Pit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity and subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded, and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization. For the identification of delays, a context-based system could be required in order to help optimizing the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage, and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

"INTRODUCTION For a long time now automation has been state of the art in production engineering and chemical engineering. The advantages of automation are, for instance, higher reliabilities of production processes, higher product qualities as well as capacities and improved safety conditions for the personnel. In contrast, many operations in mining are still conducted manually by machine operators instead of autonomous control units. One example for this is the excavation of underground hard coal which is still executed with aid of human perception. The Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) has been working on possibilities for sensor-based automation of mining machinery for many years now. Thereto the focus is set on the implementation of common material analysis techniques into ruggedized conditions as a basis for automation. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for instance is an atom emission technique which enables the determination of the elemental composition of a sample. After introducing LIBS this paper will give an overview on dust formation during the cutting process. With the illustration of a few examples the challenges in determining dust concentrations specifically such of cutting processes are explained in further detail. The final chapter will outlay the possibilities and challenges in utilizing cutting-induced dust for the automation of shearer loaders. LASER-INDUCED BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY LIBS Fundamentals LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) is a contact-free method for analyzing materials in any state of aggregate. It pertains the atom emission techniques and is based on the generation of plasma, inducing avalanche ionization on the surface of a solid material or any spot in a gas or aqueous solution. With sufficient background information on the expected elements and an additional calibration, this method can determine all present elements not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. However, this method cannot be utilized for determining the molecular composition of materials – if this feature is required a complementary method such as Raman analysis needs to be added. (1, 2)"

Phosphate reserves have been and still are a controversial subject. Some published estimates are particularly conservative and have caused concern in government and political circles that southeastern phosphates are a dwindling resource. "Ores and ore bodies" are a function of economics that relate to a time/demand factor. The history of phosphates and other mineral commodities is one of mineral deposits (resources) ever becoming ore (reserves) via a long term logic based on price, supply, and demand factors operating through time and improved technology. Projections indicate that southeastern phosphates are sufficient for several centuries of operations at present production rates.

SF Coal Corporation, in conjunction with the development of the new Lee Ranch Mine, is developing a computer-based maintenance system as an integral part of a total mine management information system. The system includes the ability to schedule and plan preventative maintenance on all rolling stock and mine facilities, project and track component life, and evaluate and schedule manpower requirements. The system hardware, shared by accounting, warehousing, engineering, production and management, consists of a multi-user, multi-processor micro-computer.

A mutant strain of Pseudomonas paucimobilis is utilized to effectively degrade and or remove 90-98% of cyanide, thiocyanate, toxic heavy metals and ammonia from a cyanidation mill process and mine discharge maximum of 21,000 m3/d (5.5 MGD). Management for mine construction and development differs from that needed for routine mine production and maintenance. An integrated approach to managing mine development projects must consider contract documents; management organization of a project; the project manager's role and the field supervisor's responsibility; and the use of scientific techniques for planning, scheduling, executing, and controlling projects. Professional project management encompasses the following: • Preparing contract documents that establish technical and financial schedules, and detail the responsibility for the physical work commitment. • Developing a project's organizational structure, to clearly define the roles of the project manager and the field supervisors. • Establishing project management and field supervisor relationships, to avoid ambiguity in assigning responsibility and to ensure desired project progress. • Using management science techniques, particularly networking techniques such as the critical path method for planning scheduling, executing, and controlling projects. Project Versus Production Management Project management differs from routine production management in the following ways: • Uniqueness: A project is unique. Production operations tend to be repetitive. The magnitude of one-time capital expenditures for many facets of mine development warrant special skills and attention. These professional project development skills must already be available by prior experience in the management team. • Personnel: In projects, personnel are usually assigned on a specialty basis and frequently change with the project activity. On the other hand, production personnel work together, more or less permanently. • Management Structure: In a project there may be several staff-line relationships that are not clearly defined and change with changing project activities. In a production situation, the lines of communication and authority are usually well defined. • Time Frame: A difference between project and routine production management is that project activities have comparatively less well defined durations and often tend to be relatively short-term. Production usually has both long-term and short-term plans and well defined long-term and shor-term goals. In project management, formal, critical, short-term reviews are frequently required. In production management, five year plans can be formally adjusted quarterly and annually. Short-term weekly or daily reviews can be informal. • Response to Delays: Delays in a development project may occur without anyone being immediately aware of their existence or suspecting the magnitude of consequence. In contrast, any delays in the production process can be easily identified from prior results comparison. Additionally, the response is quick, usually in a set routine. This can be traced back to the management structure and personnel. • Control Techniques: Measurements of project progress for control are not easily made due to the variety of activities that are carried on at the same time by different work groups. The yard-sticks of performance measurement for individual activities, let alone for the total project, are not easily established. However, due to the difficulty in detecting project delays, a workable control system is vitally important to a project manager. To apply a scientific project control technique such as "management by exception" requires specific planning and monitoring from the project manager for each activity in the project. Production and productivity are quick and effective yard-sticks of measuring performance in a routine operation. Control techniques required in production management usually revolve around these measures. Construction Contracts The construction contract is an important document that establishes contract scope, technical and financial details of the work, and achievement deadlines. It may also serve as the contract document to pay for work done and to verify field progress with planned progress. In practice, it is a good idea to develop a job-specific contract. This whole area is replete with legal precedence and procedures, and it is not the intent here to deal with the intricacies of establishing a contract document. But it is necessary to have an understanding of major contract types. Construction contracts are extremely important legal documents. They may vary in work specifications and enforcement of the provisions. Due to their nature, they must be composed with legal help and will take some time to compile. Even with all the precautions and provisions, it is not uncommon to find owner and contractor disagreeing. Therefore, it is important to include a way to resolve any difference quickly and to incorporate aspects of the contract as part of an overall management control tool for efficient project management.

Minerals beneficiation commonly requires initial crushing and grinding so that the mineral phase we seek to concentrate is adequately liberated to obtain a product of specified grade at optimum recovery. To some degree this also is true for coal preparation. In the comminution process we liberate not only the product but also the tailings phase. The true objective is, therefor, to eliminate from the comminution circuit whatever particulate matter has reached specified liberation, regardless of whether the particle is product or tailings material. Overgrinding either of the two phases ties up mill capacity and usually also burdens the downstream processing steps by increasing costs or decreasing recovery, or both. In view of this situation, one would expect concentration steps to be commonly incorporated into the cominution circuit. The reasons this is not done may vary, but probably include the desire to utilize large scale unit operations, e.g., large mills, in conjunction with very simple processes. Hydrocyclones have satisfied this desire but may not always be employed for the right reasons. Hydrocyclones are indeed simple. They also are rugged and forgiving. Unfortunately, these virtues are frequently misused. The direct results are inefficient classification and overgrinding. The indirect results are added costs through recovery losses, unnecessary recirculation, and so on,

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamental aspects of shear-flocculation using a rapid, in-situ particle size analyzer. Silica was stirred in the presence of an aliphatic amine to determine the effects of collector coverage, stirring speed, and solids concentration on the kinetics of shear-flocculation. The results showed that shear-flocculation is a two-stage process. In the first stage, mean particle size increased rapidly in the first 1-2 min of reaction; in the second stage, an equilibrium was set up between the rate of floc growth and floc decay. Collector dosage affected the position of the equilibrium by altering the number of surface sites for particle-particle attachment. A minimum stirring speed was necessary for shear-flocculation to occur and was dependent on solids concentration and collector dosage. This speed was the minimum necessary for particles to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier which kept conditioned particles dispersed. Larger particles flocculated more rapidly. At very high stirring speeds, large flocs became unstable, resulting in a narrowed particle size distribution in the slurry.

The new Tren Urbano heavy rail transit project in San Juan, Puerto Rico has one very significant part, the Río Piedras Contract, being constructed underground. This paper will give an overview of the tunneling work that started construction in1997. Design-Build procurement for tunneling is addressed. The new and modern transit system in San Juan will be 17.2 km (10.7 mi)long and have 16 stations in its first segment of construction, which is due to open in 2001. The line connects the city center district of Santurce to the outlying suburban municipality of Bayamón. All construction is being done under design-build contracts as a demonstration project funded by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The Río Piedras Contract is completely underground and involves practically all types of construction in soft ground. One station is built as cut-and-cover at the University of Puerto Rico. One portion has twin tunnels to be driven with an Earth Pressure Balance Machine (EPBM) and lined with one-pass precast concrete segments. Another has four short tunnel drives at a turnout that will be constructed with an initial support of shotcrete and lattice girders (i.e., the New Austrian Tunneling Method of construction). The most complex construction is the Río Piedras Station, which is being built as a stacked drift with a total of 15 individual tunnel drifts. After being sequentially excavated and concreted, they will form the arch of the 19 m (62 ft.) wide by 16 m (53 ft.) high cavern station. This structure is excavated in soil with less than 5 m (16 ft.) of cover to overlying historic buildings.
