Demand for both lead and zinc to the year 2000 will be characterised by modest to nil growth in mature economies, with positive 3 to 4 per cent annual growth rates in developing nations. Asia and China will feature significantly in this growth. Overall lead demand is expected to grow about 1 per cent a year, with industry becoming more dependent on the fortunes of the automotive industry as the lead-acid battery will be the only major end use to expand. Zinc will become more dependent on its main use, galvanising, as the automotive and construction industries move to high levels of dependence on corrosion prevention. Strong growth in zinc consumption in S.E. Asia, China and India is likely to feature widespread development of the continuous steel strip mini-galvanising line technology. Thank you Mr. Chairman for inviting me to this Conference. As an Australian I am honoured to be here to offer some thoughts about future trends in metal consumption -- with particular reference to the role of countries in my own neighbourhood, the developing Asian nations, including China. It is customary for a member of the producer fraternity to speak to the topic of future development. This is no doubt due to the fact that our companies are so often engaged in endeavours to determine the future prospects of the metals as essential background to massive investment decisions relating to the development of new mines and smelters. This is sometimes also applied in relation to the more painful decision of closures of aging operations. In this paper I have drawn upon recent studies by AM&S into the future of lead and zinc. While this work has been thorough and skillful, we are nonetheless left with uncertainty on a number of counts. Firstly. predictions in the past in our industry have not been all that credible. Need I remind a U.S. audience for instance of the Paley ' investigation setup by President Truman in 1950 to study U.S. copper requirements for 25 years in the future. Asarco's Simon Strauss gave those of us daring to forecast long term commodity trends a salutary reminder that the Paley Commission with all the expertise at its disposal missed the mark in its copper predictions by a very wide margin indeed. Additionally, it is difficult to take comfort from longer term economic forecasts. Too many important economic issues remain unresolved suggesting considerable caution. These include the threat of growing protectionism; low economic growth rates with stubborn unemployment levels; and levels of government expenditure at near saturation as a percentage of GDP, to name a few. However, on a more optimistic note. we can look to China, where there appears to be momentum in its economic growth; oil, where stable oil prices to the mid 1990's will contribute to inflation control; and the fact that LDC debt, while still a major issue, is declining in importance and priority. In the short time allocated to us. I wish to deal succinctly with the lead and zinc raw materials supply picture, which is one I do not believe will hold too many surprises for this audience. Following the review of raw materials supply, we will turn our attention to the changes in the pattern of demand towards the year 2000. emphasising the Asian position. In this context. I would like to focus on the theme of the changes in OECD consumption levels relative to those of the emerging nations. One area we will be paying special attention to is China.

INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). The two types of dryers used in the drying of copper concentrates are the rotary dryer and the spray dryer. The rotary dryer has until recent history been the traditional drying method used, Although spray dryers have been used in the chemical field for many years it is only recently that they have been accepted for drying of copper concentrates. The comparison made here will apply in a narrower sense to the drying of copper concentrates as fed into the reverbatory furnaces of the Smelter. To compare a rotary dryer and a spray dryer, which are two totally different methods and pieces of equipment, it is best to view them as systems each made up of certain elements

The paper deals with the assessment of the visual impact generated by surface mining and quarrying. Previous research works proved the applicability of an indirect method based on the elaboration of digital images through which the extent of the visible altered area and the chromatic contrast with the surrounding environment is calculated. The resulting level of visual impact allows an objective comparison among different cases as far as the evaluation procedure is univocally defined. The article illustrates the application of the method to a number of selected quarries located within the Sardinian territory; different issues are discussed such as the choice of the viewpoints from which the pictures are taken, the influence of the distance from the quarry to the selected viewpoints, the light condition and the orientation of the quarry faces. Moreover, the visual impact level obtained from pictures taken at the same time with five digital cameras are compared in order to evaluate the contribution on the overall uncertainty.

INTRODUCTION Concentration of radon 222Rn and its decay products occuring in the Polish mines of metal-ores call for the necessity of systematic radiation control /Do8la/ both of the working environment and of the miners' personal exposure. The attempts at introducing a system of radiological protection in mines, similar to the ones existing in X-ray or isotope laboratories, took several years and consisted of development of the methods for control of concentration of radon and its progeny in the air, as well as the methods for measuring individual exposure. It was accepted that the assessment of both transient concentration in the air and of personal exposure are basic elements of the control system, which should be implemented independently of each other. Concentration measurement serves to detect and to determine those areas in mines where there is intensive radon emanation, and where current control of the effectiveness of technology introduced to deacrease the concentrations is necessary; personal dosimetry results in the assessment of the actual exposure of miners to radiation. PRINCIPLES OF THE SYSTEM The assessment of working environment is based on concentration measurements of the potential radiation energy of radon alpha decay products. Decentralized assessment is carried out by the special dosimetric service operating in each mine. Dosimetrists are equipped with portable radiometers, type RGR-11, made by the institute of Nuclear Research, Warsaw. The radiometer is presented in Fig. 1. Measurement of filter activity is performed automatically according to Markov's method /Ma62/ or any other method. Simultaneously to potential energy measurement the dosimetrists are measuring the dust concentration in the air and ventilation rate. Ventilation service looks for correlation between those indices and the concentration of radon daughters in the air. Derived Air Concentration /DAC/ for concentration assessment was accepted to be 6.25 10-6 Jm-3 /0.3 WL/ according to ICRP recommendation /Publication No. 24/ /ICRP77/. If environmental measurements reveal potential energy concentration exceeding the value of 0.3 DAC at working places, the miners employed there are subject to individual control of personal exposure. Individual exposure measurement is carried out centrally by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in [Lodz] for all metal-ore mines. The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty inherent in the factor-of-safety (FS) predictions for soil slopes in which there is an incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study that considers a natural clay slope in Canada is presented. The sequential-indicator simulation technique was used as a means of generating a series of spatial maps of the soil properties at the site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. FS determinations were made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach. In using this approach, computations are performed using a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the FS distribution conditional to the type, position and value of existing site-characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

Custom Coals, International has installed and is presently testing a 225 kg/hr. (500 lb/hr.) micronized-magnetite, fine-coal cleaning circuit at PETC's Process Research Facility (PRF). The cost-shared project was awarded as part of the Coal Preparation Program's High Efficiency Preparation Subprogram. The project includes design, construction and testing of a fully-integrated, bench-scale circuit, complete with feed coal classification to remove the minus 30 micron slimes, dense-medium cycloning of the 300 by 30 micron feed coal using three different size micronized-magnetite mediums, and medium recovery circuits using drain and rinse screens and various stages and types of magnetic separators. This paper describes the project circuit and goals, including a description of the current project status and the sources of coal and magnetite which are being tested.

INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts. "INTRODUCTION Mines are filled with a mixture of gases, some of which are toxic, flammable, explosive. Others can be early reporters of potential problems. It has previously been shown that analysis by gas chromatograph can the most accurate conventional analytical tool for common mine gas mixtures when used correctly. There are some other detection methods (e.g hand held sensors), but they do not detect many situations which are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). Examples include explosive hydrogen mixtures, toxic carbon dioxide levels, and some explosive mixtures of methane with oxygen. (Reference our previous paper). There are several reasons for mines to consider onsite GC analysis. (1) Timeliness of results. Samples can be taken and analyzed immediately. Samples do not have to be shipped to a lab and wait for results. (2) Ability to run greater number of samples a lower for the same cost. This allows mine to increase the number of samples taken to be more informed about the gases/conditions of the mine without the worry of financial constraints. (3) Fewer sample media needed, and there is no wear and tear or cost from shipping them offsite. When samples are shipped offsite, those sample media cannot be used to take until the lab returns them when the analysis is done onsite, the sample media can be used again almost immediately. However there are several challenges associated with using GC to analyze mine gas samples onsite. To date there has been a clash of the requirements for a successful analysis, the capabilities of the technology, and the practicalities of implementation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the difficulties in getting accurate reliable data and doing so in an economic way. This whole measurement activity is a cost center for a mine, so there are economic concerns for the mine to address. These concerns are mainly staffing costs, capital costs, maintenance, and consumables costs. A properly staffed and equipped analysis lab, including burdened overhead, costs about $500K per year. At a sampling rate of 10 per day, this is about $140 per measurement for a proper onsite lab."

Aqueous pressure oxidation at low temperature, although desirable from a process engineering and operating point of view, presents unique problems when temperatures approach 160°C (320°F). In developing the pressure oxidation process for the Lone Tree Mine, elemental sulfur formation and agglomeration with pyrite proved to be a problem. This paper discusses some of the unique features of the Lone Tree sulfide deposit and its amenability to low-temperature oxidation. Problems encountered during pilot plant operation and their solutions are discussed.

High-resolution seismic reflection profiling can be used to evaluate detailed struc¬tural and stratigraphic features of coal pros¬pects. Since most coal prospects are relatively shallow (less than six hundred meters deep), the vertical and lateral resolution of seismic data can be significantly improved by high sampling rates in space and time. The case study present¬ed shows the effective use of seismic data in evaluation of the Wyodak coal at a prospective coal gasification site. The data were used to map the detailed structure and thickness of the coal and to search for lateral discontinuities, such as pinchouts and. faults. An important find was a paleochannel cutting across the base of the coal seam, which was later confirmed by drilling.

During the early 1960's, a method was developed for refining sand from the Arkansas River to produce a feldspathic product that was proposed for use in making colorless glass. Because of the need for chemical uniformity, a cooperating glass manufacturer specified certain ranges of percentages for each chemical constituent of the sand. These specifications were met by fulfilling the single requirement that alumina vary by no more than 20.1 percent from the specified value. This translated to a total variation of only about 1 percent in the feldspar content of the mixed quartz-feldspar products. Because the feldspar was lighter than the quartz, the average density of refined sand varied depending on composition. Densities, determined to five significant figures, of several samples were correlated with their chemical analyses, and the correlation could then be used with density determinations to more reliably indicate compositions than by chemical analyses only. The effects of several variables on the composition of refined sands were studied. There was a regular variation in the proportion of feldspar with screen size. A series of samples with their natural size distributions were more nearly uniform in composition than the same sands after screening and recombination. The screening and recombination process was done so that the sands had identical size distributions. Variations in the refining showed little effect on composition. A pile of flow-back sand from a construction sand washer was found to be severely segregated. However, samples taken from many points in the river near the sand plant and from the flow-back discharge pipe over several weeks very nearly met the uniformity specification. If care was taken to avoid segregation either before or during processing, it should be possible to meet the uniformity specifications for a feldspathic glass sand.

This paper does not deal with the typical start-up issues of equipment, production capacity or work force. This is a description of the challenges faced and the changes made by the project team to bring to fruition the reconstruction of Port Inland. Many honored traditions and norms had to be overturned to find the winning combination that provided the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. This paper covers the innovation in terms of machinery, operations, and management philosophy that permitted the renovation and reopening of Port Inland as a commercial limestone producer in the spring of 1992. Port Inland, constructed by Inland Steel in 1930, operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan, the operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 500,000 tons of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped via lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical Dolomite and Limestone are produced on site. In 1930, Port Inland was at the fore front of technological advancement. It was the first major mining operation to use roller bearings and other equipment innovations. Over the 60 years of operation, Inland Steel placed emphasis on steel making technology and iron ore mining at the detriment of the limestone operation. By the early 80's, Port Inland was no longer a leading competitor. Inland Steel, unable or unwilling to spend the capital to modernize, closed the facility in the fall of 1989.

This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.

A short course, held during the SME Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ in February, focused on software for surface and underground mine modeling. The objectives of the short course were to review techniques for surface and underground mine planning. Mine planning software vendors were invited to demonstrate how their software runs, given a standard data set. Six vendors of mining-specific software participated in the workshop. They were Exploration Computer Services (MINEX 3D), GEMCOM Services, Inc. (PC-MINE), KJRA Systems (VULCAN), Mine Development Associates (SURPAC), Micromine and MINEsoft (TECHBASE). Data set A data set was created to challenge the capabilities of each vendor's software. The criteria used for the data set selection were: • a minimum of 300 drill holes; • the data must include topography, drill hole survey, assay and formation contacts; • the deposit was multimetallic; and • there was the potential to be mined by surface and underground methods. The data set used was an actual, complex copper ore body with a small amount of gold. The ore body was close enough to the surface to be mined by surface techniques. Part of it, though, was also amenable to underground mining. To further complicate the problem, a river ran across the area of the ore body. This presented mine planners with the problem of either moving the river or mining around or below it. The ore body had not been mined, so no data was available for the tons and grade actually produced. Data for the mine planning problem was distributed to each vendor about two months before the short course. They had the opportunity to load the data into their systems, build an ore body model and perform preliminary work. During the first day of the workshop, the vendors received problems concerning the ore body. They went to work on their machines, attempting to show short course participants how their software could help solve the problem.

Microcomputer technology has begun to revolutionize petroleum engineering. Petroleum engineers' use of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC's) is likely to continue expanding rapidly. Since 1982 SPE's Microcomputer Applications Committee has developed a Society-wide users group, a bi-monthly newsletter (MICROCOMP NEWS), an SPE Short Course, a hardware and software distribution program, and a world wide electronic network (SPE NET). The purpose of this paper is to share SPE's experience in creating a dynamic program for meeting the individual member's need in the application of microcomputers to petroleum engineering. My hope is that this will encourage other engineering and scientific organizations to provide similar programs for their members.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines is improving the reliability of mining and processing equipment through the use of failure analysis and condition monitoring activities. Program results include an increase in equipment capacity and an overall reduction in operating costs. Identifying equipment failure modes and developing associated capital asset management practices can minimize failure consequences. Successful programs have included alterations to management practices, equipment modifications, and/or the implementation of condition monitoring programs. By controlling or minimizing the effects of incipient equipment failures, corrective actions can be taken earlier in the failure cycle. This results in an associated reduction to repair costs and equipment down time. Mining companies invest in their capital assets to provide the capacity necessary to meet operational needs. Over time, functional failures occur that reduce this productive capacity. Diagnostic technologies now exist that allow the condition of equipment to be monitored. Early response to this information minimizes the effects of functional failures and restores equipment re- liability. Reliability is a performance indicator of overall equipment condition. It is most often expressed in terms of mean time between failures. When the established objectives of a capital asset management program include the maximization of this failure interval, trailing indicators, such as availability and operating cost improve. The probability of equipment failure is influenced by engineering design and operating conditions. The performance level resulting from this operating environment is expressed as "inherent reliability." Without maintenance intervention, equipment will ultimately fail to perform its intended function and become less reliable. Therefore, maintenance must be managed as the supplier of reliable operational capacity. Maintenance can only supply equipment performance that approaches the level of inherent reliability. Actually achieving inherent reliability requires that all maintenance decisions are made at the economically optimal time. Enhancing performance levels beyond inherent reliability can only be achieved by altering operating conditions or practices or through physical equipment modifications. An evolution in maintenance management philosophy has been under way since the beginning of the industrial revolution. As equipment has become more sophisticated, so have maintenance practices. At the beginning of the industrial age, equipment tended to be over designed and slow moving. The first maintenance philosophy was one of reactive maintenance. Maintenance intervals were dictated by the operational status of the equipment. As a result, production interruptions were common and capacity needs were met through an investment in redundant capital assets.

Spontaneous combustion in underground coal mines has become a serious problem particularly in the caved area (gob). Recent statistic has shown that approximately 17% of total 87 underground coal mine fires in the United States are attributed to spontaneous combustion (De Rosa, 2004). Spontaneous combustion results from a self-heating process in exothermic conditions. The accumulated heat, if not removed, is conducive to the rapid increase of temperature and may result in mine fires or explosions. It is well accepted that the interaction between oxygen and coal substances is the main cause for spontaneous combustion, while other factors such as pyrite, moisture, and bacteria play a secondary role to the self-heating of coal. Therefore, only coal oxidation is considered in this study. Coal oxidation occurs as coal comes into contact with air. This process involves complex phenomena in terms of heat transfer, chemical surface absorption, and energy balance related to inherent properties of coal (Wang et al., 2003). For simulation purpose, overall reactions can be simplified as suggested by Mitchell (1990): C + O2 CO2 + heat [65°- 94°C] (1) CO2 + C 2CO + heat [100°- 150°C] (2) Stoichiometric reactions (1) and (2) show that 2.66 grams of oxygen are required to oxidize 1.0 gram of carbon. Once the temperature exceeds 100°C, the reaction has little chance to stop. The crucial step in reducing spontaneous combustion risk is locating the ignition point of spontaneous combustion (hot spot). This information is useful in the effort of developing a preventive method effectively. In this study, this was conducted based on the best gathered information: ventilation surveys conducted in an existing longwall mine located in the western US; the laboratory experiments performed on a physical gob model; and the CFD models to investigate the flow behavior in the gob, the oxidation of coal, and heat transfer phenomena. The hot spot location is determined as a function of oxygen concentration and gob temperature. The critical values are the following: 5% (by volume) for oxygen and 100°C for gob temperature. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOB MATERIAL AND MODELS Permeability Concept Permeability is one of the key parameters in any study dealing with porous medium. This is determined by particle size and the ratio of void volume to the total volume (porosity) of porous medium. This relationship is known as the Carman-Kozeny equation (Scheidegger, 1957) and is given mathematically as [ ] where k* = theoretical specific permeability, m2 dm = the mean particle size, m n = porosity However, permeability tests with various particle sizes were carried out at the University of Utah?s ventilation model (Figure 1) to verify this relationship. These tests indicated a necessity to modify this theoretical relationship. A factor of 0.898 was obtained to make up the different between theoretical permeability and the experimental one. The modified version of (3) is given by: [ ] This equation is used to determine permeability of the simulated mine gob throughout the study. [ ] Mine Gob Material The gob is represented by zones filled with material of given size distribution. For physical measurements and CFD simulations, the material used were crushed rock and coal. Due to compaction, three different characteristics of gob material were used in the model: unconsolidated, semiconsolidated, and consolidated. In the real condition, the largest coal-rock particles are more likely to be located in the area behind the shields. This material is freshly broken and unconsolidated. The size of these broken particles is based on a study carried out by analyzing images taken from the area behind the shields in three coal mines in the United States (Pappas and Mark, 1993). The results have shown that the mean size of materials behind the shields is about 1.22 m. The permeability associated with this size was then obtained from (4) and permeability tests. This was 4.68 x10-7 m2. For semiconsolidated and consolidated zones, due to the lack of experimental data, these were determined through CFD simulations. These simulations were designed by assigning a permeability of 3.15 x 10-8 m2 for consolidated zone and 7.98 x 10-9 m2 to the other zone. The airflow pattern in the gob assigned with given permeabilities was expected to follow the experimental distribution (Brunner, 1985). The mean particle sizes for the semi-consolidated and consolidated zones were 0.02 and 0.006 m, respectively; smaller than those of the unconsolidated zone. Figure 2 shows the 3D view of permeability changes in the gob.

The Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practice and Control Conference was held from Oct. 20through 24, 2002, at the Fairmont Hotel, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The conference was attended by nearly 400 of the world’s top mineral-processing specialists, including plant-design engineers, mineral-processing consultants, academics, suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The meeting was sponsored by SME and cosponsored by the Canadian Mineral Processing Division of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). The conference covered all aspects of mineral-processing design, construction and operation. The meeting included more than 130 technical presentations. Topics included sampling programs, feasibility studies, design criteria, process technologies, construction, start-up operations and shutdowns. To stimulate interaction and discussion throughout the five-day conference, the sessions were presented consecutively. Attendees had the opportunity to attend every session.

An evaluation was recently performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, Wyoming. A 1.52m (5 ft) diameter, 37.3kw (50 hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated approximately 31.4 m'/sec (66,578 ft'/min) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of approximately 20 pct of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 6l0m (2,000 ft) and 1,829m (6,000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane, and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF. tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.
