The deep South African gold mines rely on refrigeration to provide a safe working environment. Chilled water, which is produced in large central refrigeration plants, is distributed throughout mines In insulated pipes. In view of the high cost of the insulation materials and recent regulations which prohibit the use of certain insulation materials, a careful examination of the actual benefits of insulating chilled water pipes was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to produce general guidelines regarding the use of insulation, but the results of numerous studies have shown that the use of insulation is extremely site specific and thus no general guidelines can be given. To assist ventilation engineers with studies on insulation requirements for their cooling systems a computer program has been developed. This paper describes the personal computer program which contains the same user friendly interface as developed for other COMRO programs. Is fully menu driven and incorporates a comprehensive HELP facility which provides background information and assistance with the selection of input data. The effects on the ventilation air and chilled water temperatures from not insulating chilled water pipes in certain areas are calculated. Air leakage, heat flow from the surrounding rock to the ventilation air and heat flow from the ventilation air to the water flowing in chilled water pipes are taken into account. A simple cooling system is considered in which cold water is distributed over a distance of 1 000 m through pipes to a single air cooler. The influences of changes in the temperature of the chilled water and ventilation air, as well as air leakage on the insulation requirements are determined.

United States Steel's Cumberland Coal Operations is located in Greene County in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The mine and related facilities have been in operation since September of 1977. Production from this mine, U. S. Steel's first commercial coal mining venture, will eventually reach a level of 2.72 million mt of clean coal per year and is totally committed to electric power generation. Cumberland is a slope mine in the Pittsburgh seam and is mined by continuous mining machines and longwall. The coal from the mine is trans- ported by belt to the surface, taken through a rotary breaker for initial preparation, and stored in raw coal silos. It is then processed through the preparation plant and taken to a clean coal silo where it is held for train loading. Cumberland Mine operates its am 28.16 km railroad to transport the coal to the Monongahela River. The unit train consists of thirty-one 90 mt cars. The coal, once loaded on barges, is then shipped to the customer. Cumberland Mine is one of the most modern coal preparation and unit train loading systems in the nation. The preparation plant is de- signed to receive coal from the silos at a rate of 720 at per hour. The +6.35 mm material is screened out and cleaned in a Daniels heavy media vessel with two 3.35 m weirs. Minus 6.35 mm material is fed to sixteen #88 Deister concentrating tables. The cleaned coal from this circuit is dewatered, and all effluents from the mechanical dewatering report to the classifying Cyclone sump for classification through ten 35.6 cm cyclones. The cyclones overflow material (-150 mesh) is processed through two banks of three 8.5 m3 Denver D.R. flotation machines. The cyclone underflow pro- duct (28-1 0 mesh) is processed in two banks of 5 six 2.83 m Denver Sub A machines. The clean flotation product is then dewatered in Bird screen bowl centrifuges, blended with the other clean coal size fractions, and the total plant product further dewatered in a thermal dryer.

"Ten years ago," said a mining industry personnel manager, "we used to wine and dine new mining engineering graduates. Now I can pick and choose among men with 10 years of experience." Comments like that are common throughout the industry today. During the 1970s, the US and Canada did indeed suffer from a severe shortage of mining engineers, especially experienced ones. Moreover, it seemed likely this North American shortage would worsen. Increased production of minerals and coal was pushing demand for mining engineers upwards, and there appeared to be substantial new employment prospects for them in the nascent synfuels industry. The oil majors entering the mining industry were pushing for an increased professionalization of mining management, heralding a trend towards higher intensity in the use of mining engineers. In response to the shortage, mining schools expanded their programs dramatically. By 1982, American schools were churning out more than 600 new mining engineers per year, compared to barely 200 in 1970 (Table 1). The timing of the explosion in the number of mining engineers could not have been worse. The downturn in the economy and the resulting slump in the mining industry coincided almost exactly with peak output of mining engineers. The market for mining engineers shifted from shortage to surplus with startling rapidity. The new crop of engineers, no longer courted by the mining companies, struggled to find any mining jobs. At the same time, experienced mining engineers found themselves thrown into the job market, some for the first time in decades. The current oversupply of mining engineers is assumed to be a temporary phenomenon. As the economy recovers, the demand for mining engineers is expected to pick up at least enough to absorb today's surplus. Not so, according to a recent study by Fenvessy and Schwab, a general management consulting and executive recruiting firm. In 1979, Fenvessy and Schwab was commissioned by a group of major mining companies to conduct a worldwide study of supply and demand for mining engineers to the year 2000*. The study began at the height of the North American shortage. One major objective of the study was "to identify means by which business and educational institutions may cope with and alleviate a future shortage of mining engineering talent." The findings, however, ran directly counter to expectations. The current oversupply will not disappear with economic recovery, the study concluded. In fact, the US and Canada are facing a massive oversupply that will probably last until the end of the century, unless enrollments in schools are reduced. Study Method Fenvessy and Schwab's conclusions are based on supply and demand models for mining engineers that it developed in the course of the study. Specifically, predictions for the supply of mining engineers are based on a survey of the 54 mining schools that account for about 90% of the world's annual output of mining engineering graduates. This survey asked for data on historical and projected number of graduates, obstacles to further expansion, changing trends in the use of mining engineers, and graduate career patterns. Fenvessy and Schwab developed three mining engineering supply scenarios from the survey data. The high case, considered unlikely for most of the industrialized world, is based on a continuation of the 1970's soaring growth rates. The middle case was established from the mining schools' own estimates of future growth in the number of graduating mining engineers. Finally, a "low growth" case for the US and Canada assumed that the number of graduating engineers will remain at current levels. We in Kennecott are well aware that Alaskans are interested in the progress of our project at Ruby Creek. We would very much like to be able to present you with a final report at this time and tell you about a new mine. I'm afraid, however, that it will be several years at best before such a report can be made. This, then, is an interim report to describe briefly some of our findings to date, and to acquaint you with some of the problems, both geologic and economic, which must 5e resolved favorably before we can talk about a mine. There are several things about this project which make it unusual and interesting to those of us who have been connected with it. Firstly, there is the fundamental importance to Alaska, in the present stage of its economic history, of any undertaking which offers promise of turning a natural resource into a competitive export product. I am sure all of us would get a lot more satisfaction out of having a part in bringing in a new mine in Alaska than we would out of adding another one to the long list in, say, Arizona.

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla's recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.

Observations made from laboratory analysis of samples of fine-grained argillaceous materials (shales) subjected to various changes in moisture content have been correlated to loss of strength in the rock material. This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

INTRODUCTION Information such as application review to choose the proper style of vibrating screen, parameters that determine the proper size of vibrating screen, engineering design information that governors proper screen design, review of topics that govern proper isolation from structural steel and other topics that dictate proper screen selection for applications will be presented in this paper. Topics like process and application information review to choose the style of screen and how material size and type influences proper type of screen selection (multi-slope, incline, horizontal, linear incline or dewatering) will also be discussed. Parameters will be reviewed that help size the screen for the application. The total amount of surface area to size a screen is critical to the overall success of a screen installation. Once proper style of screen is determined there is an engineering process that is required to design the screen to operate correctly in the environment it will be used. Finite Element Analysis, Dynamic Modeling, Field Vibration Analysis and other engineering tools will be reviewed to best implement a successful vibrating screen installation. TYPES OF SCREENS Multi-Slope Multi-Slope vibrating screens are used where sizing large amounts of tonnage on surface areas that would be smaller than conventional screening where roughly 6” (150mm) minus material is required to be sized. Occasionally larger particle sizes can be screened on the Multi-Slope machine but the effectiveness of the machine can be diminished with larger particle sizes and larger than 4” (100mm) screen opening. The most common and effective size range of screening with these machines is 2” (50mm) minus material. The Multi-Slope screen is used where particle size is not extremely important. Mineral processing, hard rock mining and industries where exact material size is not critical are best suited for this equipment. Because the aggregates industry requires very specific material sizes, the Multi-Slope screen is not suited for most aggregate screen applications. The key to the success of a Multi-Slope screen is proper material presentation at the feed end of the screen. This allows for the material to stratify quickly and disperse the fines through the screen quickly with a relatively thin bed depth at the feed end which allows the undersize material through the screen quickly.

The Floorgas and Roofgas simulation programs are used to identify strata relaxation zones and their boundaries, to assess active gas sources from coal seams and gas¬bearing rocks and to determine relevant gassiness prediction coefficients for any local longwall. The paper shows that by use of the print-outs from the Floorgas and Roofgas programs the following benefits are achievable: • identification of the shear and gas discharge zone positions in the floor, strata relaxation angles and various gas discharge zone positions in the roof, which are both relevant to local geological and mining conditions • optimisation of cross-measure drainage hole length, location, number and angle of inclination calculation and definition of gas make prediction coefficients such as the release ratio from adjacent coal seams, specific gas emission during longwall extraction and the relationships between gas make, longwall width and coal production levels.

In addressing the challenge of sustainable development, the North American mining industry finds itself operating in two culturally distinct frameworks. Companies are based in the developed world where a profoundly environmental ethic prevails with an emphasis on inter-generational equity – preserve now for the future. Increasingly, their operations are in the developing world where the emphasis is on intra-generational equity, and the distribution of wealth – providing opportunity for improvement today. The paper discusses the further implications of these realities and the factors facilitating or hindering the ability of mining companies to meet social expectation in these two distinct global cultures.

Testing was conducted on a Minnesota Iron Ore concentrate with Cook Clay as a binder using compressive sheer mixing to enhance the performance of the agglomeration mechanism. The testing was conducted on a bench scale at the Midland Research Center the summer of 2004. Results of the test program will be presented that shows the impact of compressive sheer mixing had on the strength achieve in a green ball.

INTRODUCTION Prior to excavation in soil and rock, it is useful to know the subsurface structure. This is important information both for safety and for equipment scheduling reasons. It is useful to know whether parts of the subsurface might be potentially troublesome or of different character than is generally thought present. By using geophysical probing, it is possible to infer the location and size of these unusual regions. The ground structure is commonly estimated from core samples taken from boreholes. These cores give a detailed knowledge of the structure in the borehole. However, knowledge of the structure exterior to the borehole can only be extrapolated from core data. By using seismic and electromagnetic cross-borehole geophysical probing, remote probing can be used to sense the region exterior to boreholes. A recent advance has significantly improved the state-of-the-art for defining the ground structure between boreholes. This new procedure utilizes large amounts of data and provides a detailed picture of the subsurface. The data processing algorithms used are similar to those in medical imaging of the human body using x-rays, a science called x-ray tomography. This imaging of the ground is called geotomography, which is a shortened acronym for geophysical tomography. Several examples of geotomography applied to imaging ground structure are presented. Our approach has been to probe the ground with electromagnetic and seismic waves. We map the region of interest with signals transmitted between multiple source and receiver pairs lowered in boreholes on opposite sides of the region (Figure 1). Over 10 percent of the United States of America or 41 percent of the Federal lands is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as Public Lands. The mission is to manage the use of these lands and their resources. The way in which BLM carries out its mission is being refocused under the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management for the benefit of various human needs including environmental, social and economic values. The Bureau is developing methods to integrate the renewable and non-renewable resources programs into the concepts of biodiversity and ecosystem-based management. Exploration, development and extraction of energy or mineral resources on Public Lands are affected. The statements that following the next few pages are my personal views as a scientist (economic geologist -mining technologist) who is and has been involved for the last twenty years in the multiple-use management of Public Lands. They are not necessarily the position of the Bureau of Land Management, although much of the information on which I base my views comes from my experience with the BLM. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages over 10 percent of the United States (270 million acres or 108 million hectares) which is 41 percent of the Federal Lands. Lands managed by BLM are known as Public Lands as opposed to the National Forest Lands which are Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA) of 1976 which in Sec. 102 states ??that it is the policy of the United States (7) ?that management be on the basis of multiple use and sustained yield??, the mission of the BLM is rapidly refocused under the concepts of biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystems-based management for the benefit of the environment, human needs and socio-economic values.

In its 2001 diesel particulate matter (DPM) rule for metal and nonmetal underground mines, MSHA established an interim concentration limit of 400 micrograms of total carbon (TC) per cubic meter of air (400TCµg/m3), and a final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3, to be phased in over five years. Following a court challenge to the 2001 rule, MSHA, industry and organized labor reached a partial settlement of the litigation under which the agency agreed to issue a proposal to amend the 2001 rule by, among other things, changing the surrogate from TC to elemental carbon (EC), applying MSHA's traditional hierarchy of controls, and revising requirements for one-year special extensions for complying with the final DPM exposure limit. MSHA issued a final rule in 2005 converting the interim concentration limit from 400TCµg/m3 to 308 micrograms of EC per cubic meter of air (308ECµg/m3) based on a miner?s personal exposure. Pending further rulemaking, MSHA retained the final concentration limit of 160TCµg/m3. In May 2006, MSHA issued a final rule that clarified that the final limit of 160TCµg/m3 would be based on a miner?s personal exposure rather than as a concentration limit. The 2006 rule also phased in the final DPM limit in three steps over two years, beginning in May 2006 at 308ECµg/m3, followed eight months later in January 2007 with a limit of 350TCµg/m3, and finally reaching 160TCµg/m3 in May 2008. Also in the 2006 rule, MSHA committed to converting the 160TCµg/m3 limit to an EC limit in future rulemaking. This paper reviews the DPM exposure limits in the context of the MSHA rulemakings and discusses the DPM engineering controls that were utilized by mine operators to attain compliance with each progressively lower limit.

In the early days of minimal environmental protection awareness and unreasoning economy development pressures, little attention was paid to growing environmental concerns in Fuxin colliery, especially the air pollution problem due to the long term mining activities. In order to determine air quality concentration levels, a new technique for synthetic assessment of ambient air quality by using the extension of matter-element method is proposed in this paper. The air pollutants data such as Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Total Suspended Particulates (TSP), Particulate Matter (PM10), and dustfall collected at four different air quality monitoring stations located in four districts of Fuxin colliery is used. The results obtained indicate that TSP, PM10, dustfall and SO2 are the predominant pollutants. Other pollutants such as CO and NOx are also detected in Fuxin colliery. The air pollution comes mainly from industrial emissions, mining activities and the abandoned gangue stockpiles. Compared to those applied to other mathematical assessment methods, it is demonstrated that the extension of matter-element model is quite appropriate for air quality assessment.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

Disseminated epithermal gold metallization occurs within a breccia unit interpreted to be a submarine debris flow. Cold is associated with oxidized pyrite, fluorite, and jasperoidal silica. A minimum of 9 million tons of open-pittable mining reserves will be cyanide heap leached as run-of-mine ore at a rate of 1.0 million tons per year. Careful evaluation of the combined results of successive sampling projects has established the pit plan, mineable reserves, and process metallurgy of the operation. The sampling procedure utilized for a given test depended upon geological interpretation as well as the procedures, successes, and failures of previous tests. This paper summarizes the sampling and testing procedures of the development effort in light of the project goals and attendant problems in achieving them.

"INTRODUCTION The need for a new road crossing at Silvertown is the result of three key drivers:- •,Severe congestion and delay at the Blackwall Tunnel and surrounding road network; •,A lack of network resilience and reliability resulting from a lack of alternative road crossings in east London and the impacts of unplanned closures; and •,The need to support substantial economic development in east and south-east London (jobs and homes) These drivers directly informed the main objectives for a road-based river-crossing solution. The traffic-related problems at Blackwall Tunnel are long-standing and before Transport for London (TfL) assumed control for the strategic road network in London in 2000 the Department for Transport (formerly Dept of Transport) had investigated various relief options including a third tunnel bore and new bridge. This resulted in a new crossing alignment being safeguarded (by direction of the Secretary of State for Transport) and this was refreshed in 2001 in favor of TfL. In recent years (since 2009) TfL as part of the East London River Crossings Programme has undertaken detailed optioneering and feasibility work to address the above ‘need’. This led to the conclusion that a new road tunnel would offer the best solution in preference to bridge, ferry or demand management options. In 2012, in response to a formal request by the Mayor of London, the Secretary of State for Transport confirmed a new road crossing at Silvertown as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) by Section 35 direction under the Planning Act 2008. This NSIP designation meant that TfL as scheme promoter must comply with the National Rail and Road Networks National Policy Statement (NNNPS) and must seek the necessary powers to build and operate the crossing by means of a Development Consent Order (DCO) under the Planning Act 2008."

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

A pilot-plant flotation concentrate containing 21.6 g/t gold and 2 kg/t silver was used for this study. Base-line cyanide and thiourea tests showed 30-40% extraction of both gold and silver. After roasting (450-750C), the maximum gold extracted was 89% with thiourea and 76% with cyanide. Pressure oxidation tests were conducted following a statistical experimental design in a 2L laboratory autoclave at 10% pulp density, and the residues were subsequently leached in acidic thiourea solutions for 2h. Leach results were presented in the form of contour maps, and optimum autoclave conditions were determined for maximum gold extraction (93%). However, silver extraction was only 7% when gold extraction was maximized.
