The primary objective of most comminution operations is liberation; however, mill performance is generally quantified in terms of particle size. Only recently has the use of image analysis equipment made it possible to quantify mill performance on the basis of liberation. In this investigation, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of mill operating parameters on the liberation of sphalerite from a sphalerite/dolomite ore. The parameters studied included mill rotational speed, mill loading and ball size. The results of this work appear to indicate that sphalerite liberation is improved under conditions that promote impact breakage, while dolomite breakage is enhanced under attrition conditions.

The problem of increasing underground mine ventilation efficiency is still of top priority. The complication of geological conditions with the depth of underground mining processes and reinforcement of requirements to technological and ecological safety are extorting the necessity of solving this complex problem with using of new information technologies. There exist different approaches to the ventilation problem. One of them, which the authors adhere to, is based on the concept of monitoring (under special mining and geological conditions-automatic control) of mining atmosphere and operative re-distribution of underground mining air among consumer , in accordance with the criterion of optimality [ 1.3 1. ] The set of tasks which should be decided in the frame of con- crete ventilation system depends on the peculiarities of deposit, technological schemes and so on. Nevertheless, some ventilation tasks such as: defining of ventilation network parameters; finding of dependence between these parametrs; operative redistribution of air streems, could be interpreted as universal ones. Main aspects of practical solving of different ventilation problems and their classification were investigated and considered in detail before [I ,2 ]. Some years ago we have began our investigations to develope quite simple and effective methods for decision of ventilation tasks on the base of neural network technology. It is well known that ventilation net, formed by various mine workings, is the main component of underground mining ventilation system. In general, network air distribution may be described by some functional F(Q,R,H), where Q- is a vector of air consumptions; H- is a vector of depressions; R- is a vector of airdynamic resistences. (Q,R,H) - are the informative entities , characterising every branch of the net. There exist some fundamental tasks which should be decided during the process of control of mining ventilation: calculating of natural air distribution Q = Q,{R, H,}, or Q = Q2(R, Q?}, where H, - is the maximal depression of the ventilation net, Q, - is the air consumption in the ventilation shaft; identifying of airdynamic resistance for some branches on the base either of air-depression removal or operative monitoring: [ ]

Missouri is a state rich in mineral commodities. There is a variety of types of mining as well as minerals in the state. Different phases of mining are controlled by a variety of state and federal laws. What I hope to do today is to present briefly some of the interaction and interplay that has occurred in the recent years between the mineral industry and the Missouri regulatory agencies, as well as some of the interactions by federal agencies. First a little history which dates back to the late 1600's. For many years Missouri has been a leader in the production of lead and zinc. In fact, recent studies have indicated that Missouri produces better than three-fourths of the nation's present lead supply. Less well known but important resource is iron mining. Some of these operations were the source of confrontation during the Civil War. Major battles were fought in and around Ironton, Missouri where iron mining has occurred for many years. One of the largest pelletizing operations in the state is currently located within the city of Ironton. Joplin, Missouri, the home of Thomas Hart Benton, the famous Missouri painter, has a history of lead and zinc mining, going back to the later 1800's. Many of the paintings by Benton contain reference to the early days of mining in Missouri. There is a Benton mural in the City Hall at Carthage depicting the early days of lead mining in that area. Later, the center of lead mining moved to southeast Missouri near Bonne Terre and Flat River. The names of the towns in this area reflect the history of mining, examples - Leadington, Old Mines, Rivermines, etc. The history of lead mining in Missouri has been referred to in some detail in various publications(l).

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. The minerals industry trend toward very flotation machines, exceeding 10 m3, began in the late 1960's and responds to the continuing desire to achieve better plant economics through improved plant floor-space utilization, power requirements, and operational /maintenance manpower heeds. In general, as process design tonnage increases, the benefits of the larger flotation machine becomes more evident. The development of the larger flotation machine can be distingushed from earlier, smaller, machines in demanding a rational "scale-up" procedure to guide the basic design, thereby producing a machine prototype capable of satisfactory-operational evaluation at minimum cost. Proven flotation machine "hydrodynamic" scale-up consideration, successfully applied in the development of both the WEMCO No. 164 (28.3 m3) and No. 190 (42.5 m3) machine will be reviewed, and the resulting economic benefits of large flotation machines in high tonnage applications will be summarized.

Sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. The pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors and it was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of the shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is discussed in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes.

Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on the effectiveness to extinguish conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression systems were water sprinkler, deluge type water spray, and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 72-in-wide fire resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 500-550 feet per minute (fpm) and 1350-1500 fpm. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations require. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply to the suppression system. In the test set up neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 500 fpm air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test set-up, arrangement of the fire suppression systems, and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance. Risks in underground construction are often viewed as technical in nature; "running ground, " "squeezing ground" and "chimneys" are terms that appear in construction managers' nightmares, and occasionally in their underground projects. Financial consequences of these and other project risks are reviewed. Special attention is paid to sources of cost overruns. From this study a structure evolves for setting priorities for risk management actions; these actions can also be tested for impact and potential effectiveness. Finally, case study reviews of six underground projects indicate the "state of the practice" for financial risk management.

Recently developed organic binder systems have the advantage of eliminating bentonite contamination. This results in better chemically reactive taconite pellets. Both acid and fluxed pellets show increased R40 reducibilities, whereas mechanical and physical properties of the taconite pellets are not adversely affected. Blast furnace performance of these pellets is excellent, and substantial economic benefits are achieved.

Cominco Metals, in cooperation with two Canadian Universities and the Government of Canada, is developing applications for column flotation in the treatment of lead and zinc ores. Plant scale results at Polaris and pilot plant studies of Sullivan, Pine Point and Red Dog ores show column flotation to have significant advantages over conventional mechanical flotation for lead and zinc cleaning. Results from these ongoing studies are discussed in relation to ore texture, mineral recovery, impurity behaviour, scale-up and control.

The theory, definition and practical application of cutoff grades have evolved over a long period. This evolution is reflected in the continuing flow of papers on this and other related matters though the rate has varied as new ideas and theories have become understood and applied in practice. Papers by Lane(l) in 1964 and Taylor(-2)- in 1972 provided landmarks in the understanding and general communication of cutoff grade theory and its application. The reasons for the continuing interest in cutoff grades are obvious. Too high a cutoff can reduce the mineral recovered and possibly the life of a deposit. Too low a cutoff would reduce the average grade (and hence profit) below acceptable levels. This paper provides a brief overview of existing cutoff grade theory and some particular aspects of its application.

In seeking cost reductions, control methods are a fertile field because they significantly affect labor and other costs. While process control in uranium mills is excellent by the evidence of high recovery, the costs seem high to those familiar with extractive operations for other metals. To some extent this high cost is inevitable, because of exacting quality control-, the technically complicated recovery processes; poor control over grade and nature of mill feed- special problems arising out of the radioactive property of the material. Practices used in uranium mills and the limitations indicated for instrumentation and automation are discussed. It is concluded that any large investment in automatic controls should be preceded by a careful study of their reliability and maintainability, and an estimate of the net income after taxes smaller plants my find it more profitable, or at least less risky, to concentrate their efforts on the possible reduction of some control problems and to development of a stable force of skilled employees. The observed experience does not inspire optimism that ore-dressing plants can be extensively automated although certain unit operations offer a challenge for improvements in instrumentation and machine design.

INTRODUCTION Spokane Mining Research Center (BuMines) is researching sealants for underground coal mines to: 1. Reduce sloughing of shale roofs. 2. Reduce sloughing of coal ribs. 3. Seal block stoppings against air losses. 4. Construct stoppings by spraying over jute cloth or metal lath. 5. Render incombustible in-place polyurethane foam. Originally the work was directed towards reducing sloughing of shale roofs. Many underground coal mines have shale directly over the coal which weathers severely after exposure to the mine atmosphere. Lab investigations(l, 2, 3, 4) have shown that many shales separate into layers when immersed in water or stored in a high relative humidity environment. Upon drying or after removal from high humidity, the shales continue to separate. Underground coal mines become wet in the warmer months from condensation of the ventilating air. Conversely, the mines become dry in the cooler months from evaporation. The mines experience severe shale break-up during the summer and much less break-up during the winter. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show weathered shale roofs. in underground coal mines. Fig. 4 shows fallen shale on the entry floor. Sealing the shale reduces this sloughing problem.

"The Doha Metro Project is one of the most relevant ongoing tunneling projects. The whole project consists of about 100 km of tunnels with 21 EPB TBMs working in the same period. Due to the variability of the geological formations, the soil conditioning is a relevant aspect of this project because the parameters should be frequently adjusted to achieve the best performances of the TBMs. The study of the soil conditioning has been carried out accurately to obtain the best results on site. The study of the geotechnical data, the choice of the most suitable foaming agents and polymers and the laboratory study of the soil conditioning has been a fundamental part of the job. The application of the soil conditioning products on site with the analysis of the TBM data have confirmed the preliminary study results with some correlation between the features of the ground and the soil conditioning parameters to be used. INTRODUCTION Phase 1 of the Doha Metro Underground project is composed by 3 lines able to bring passengers to all the points of interest in the Qatar capital city. The Red Line, also called coastal line, connects the north of the city to the south, and to the new Hamad International Airport, following the coast line. The Golden Line, called Historic Line, will connect the southern area of Doha to the “Aspire zone” the area of the city where many state of the art sport centers are located, passing through the old city center. The Green Line, named education line, will connect the old city center to the Doha Education City. All the lines are realized with 2 tubes, single track. The whole underground project is realized with 21 TBMs, excavation diameter of 7.10 m. The project has been divided in 4 packages, for a total excavation length of more than 100 km. The need to underpass roads, existing buildings, and to excavate, in some areas, at less than 100 m from the coast line, forced the choice of a tunneling system with Earth Pressure Balance (EPB), that involves in the project another fundamental aspect of this tunneling system: the soil conditioning. The soil conditioning has multiples functions in the EPB system such as to make the soil suitable to properly apply the pressure on the tunnel face and to be extracted effectively with the screw conveyor. To properly study this topic it was necessary to study the geological formations to be excavated, the hydrogeological conditions of the underground, the foam injection systems of the EPB TBMs and to perform specific tests to evaluate a suitable conditioning to be verified and adjusted during the real scale application."

In decision making support system, that are used in various fields of environmental protection (environmental impact assessment, environmental management systems, setting environmental standards and regulation, etc.), it is often important to apply various mathematical environmental engineering models. The question of linking environmetal engineering modeling to decision making support system used in environmental protection is not yet methodically solved. The reasons for that could be manifold. Decison making support systems, used in environmental protection, because they are simply taken from bussines decision making, are not often adequate for specific problems raised in environmental protection. On the other hand, there are great number of types of models in environmental engineering, what urges the problem of finding the way of their proper linking with decision making support systems. The application of fuzzy logic in that field is estimated as one of possible solution of the problem.

Faulty insulators on mine trolley/track haulageways may allow leakage of currents into the mine roof, which may ultimately result in the combustion of the roof material. The National Institute for Occupa¬tional Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), devised a passive means to detect overheating insulators on di¬rect current systems. The detector consists of a spring- loaded car¬tridge that ejects a reflective streamer of white Teflon tape when subjected to elevated temperatures. The cartridge assembly can easily be installed over the outer metallic shell of an existing trolley line insu¬lator. If an insulator overheats due to ground leakage currents, the vis¬ible streamer alerts mine personnel traveling on the haulageway.

This paper refers to the new crushing and grinding process, which was invented by Professor Schönert (Ref.1), Clausthal, Germy (author of one of the papers presented at this meeting). The process is known as high pressure particle bed comminution or interparticle crushing. Several papers by Professor Schonert and his coworkers and by specialists of the companies producing the necessary equipment under license agreements already described fundamentals of the process, the equipment used, results of lab size and large scale tests and finally the first results of truly commercial operations (Ref .2 to 11). Therefore it should be sufficient to summarize the main facts here: - To a bed of bulk material a pressure of more than 50 MPa is applied. Comminution is achieved mainly by the pressure which one particle transfers to the other and not by squeezing single particles between the working surfaces of some crusher or grinding media.

Precipitation in the northeastern United States, Florida, California and in many industrialized areas of the world is now more acidic (lower pH) than can be accounted for by natural causes. At the same time, the acidity of many lakes and streams in the northeastern United States has been measured and found to be similar to that of actual rain. These facts have led to conclusions that the two conditions are related. Coal burning utilities, 700 to 1000 miles upwind, have been accused of being the cause, leading to proposals for strict emission controls on the alleged offenders. The costs of these controls would place an estimated $10 to $15 billion capital burden on utility customers in about 15 states plus $2 to $6 billion annual operating costs. There appears to be no direct well-established scientific evidence that the accused are guilty but that the indictment is based largely on circumstantia1 evidence. This study examines the evidence, describes the situation and proposes what must be done to reduce the acid precipitation in an orderly cost beneficial manner. It is interesting to observe that studies by the different adversaries on the acid precipitation issue come to different conclusions largely because they do not read the same literature, but selectively develop evidence to support their own points of view, This study will try to review the issues impartially and reach a position of scholarly balance.

When deciding to deploy rescue teams underground the decision makers need to be able to determine that there won?t be an explosion whilst the rescue teams are underground. Previously general body concentrations in areas likely to be travelled were compared to explosive limits on a one off basis with no formal process looking at trends or other areas. A new approach is being adopted that takes into account the rate of change of gas concentrations with triggers set to enable a withdrawal of personnel prior to a possible explosion and influences such a barometric pressure changes. This paper explains the rationale behind the changes made and the advantages and implications of adopting such an approach.

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.
