Introduction Synthetic soda ash production began to decline in the late 1930s. This was due to high operating costs and waste disposal problems. Since soda ash was used as a major component in manufacturing glass, an alternate method of producing that chemical was necessary. A process to produce soda ash from trona was developed by FMC Wyoming Corp.'s predecessor, as well as an economical way to obtain trona. Existing trona operations are located about 40 km (25 miles) west of Green River, WY. Five operators presently mine trona in this area. FMC's property has 153 km2 (59 sq miles) leased. Its eight shafts reach 488 m (1600 ft) deep to the uniform trona deposit. The seam ranges in thickness from 2.4 to 3.6 m (8 to 12 ft). History Egyptian tombs, dating from 4000 to 3000 BC, contained mummies preserved by an embalming process using soda ash. For many years, soda ash was produced by burning marine plants, then dissolving the soluble material (sodium carbonate) from the ashes. The name soda ash is derived from this method of production. In 1791, Nicola LeBlanc developed black ash, or salt cake, from salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. This process remained in use until 1863, when Ernest Solvay developed a method for producing soda ash from salt, coke, and limestone with ammonia as a catalyst. This Solvay process was widely used. And, in the 1930s, there were 17 plants in the US alone. High plant operating costs and waste disposal problems, however, necessitated finding an alternative to the Solvay process.

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor&apos;s methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. During the last few years, the minerals industry has been confronted by increasingly stringent environmental regulations that are significantly altering the economics of the industry. Heightened media attention, threats of litigation and decreasing support by the general public have exacerbated the industry&apos;s difficulties. Regardless of their merit, environmental issues present a serious threat to the continued viability of mining companies. Firms have reacted to these regulations by escalating their environmental activities to meet the new requirements. They have simultaneously adjusted their corporate schedules to reflect the substantially longer time periods required to obtain construction and operating permits and ensure compliance with legal requirements before mine abandonment. Companies have also been forced to adapt to a considerably greater amount of uncertainty and expense associated with the development of mineral projects. This has resulted in a significant erosion of the profitability of some mining companies. Most of the changes in corporate environmental activities have been reactive. Pending regulations present formidable but uncertain technical requirements for compliance, and future regulatory developments are difficult to predict. This problem is aggravated by depressed market prices for many mineral commodities. Past expansions of environmental standards have led to the closure of mines and processing facilities due to economic hardship, as occurred in the smelting segment of the US copper industry in the 1980s (Cro¬zier, 1992).

"ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH HAND DRILLING/JACKLEGS In coal mines, hand held air, electric, and hydraulic powered drills are used along belt conveyors, in single entry development, in entries where there are obstructions, and in long wall recovering bolting. In hard rock mines pneumatically powered “jack leg” drills are typically used in narrow vein mining. Drilling and bolting in narrow confines has traditionally been performed with pneumatically or hydraulically powered hand-held drills or newer electrically powered hand held hammer due to their low cost, simplicity of operation, and extreme flexibility due to their small size. Mechanized equipment has typically been too large, too expensive, inefficient due to the confined space, and too restrictive due to lack of flexibility for use in narrow confines. Although the hand-held equipment is effective, it requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in use. These include falling rock from the roof, rib, and face; tripping hazards; bending twisting lifting hazards; high noise levels; and chemical fumes from the pneumatic exhaust. The operation of the hand held equipment can adversely affect the long-term health of the operator – continual jackleg operation frequently results in long term damage to hearing, shoulders, arm and wrist joints, and back injuries. This results in a reduction in life style for the operator and higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company. Hand held drills also typically have limited thrust and torque capability which limits their ability to push long resin bolts, inadequate torque to properly install resin bolts, or to properly torque mechanical or tensioned rebar bolts. Hand held drills do not offer any type of protection for the operator from roof or rib falls. They do not offer any means for handling roof or rib mesh. Since the operator stands on the ground the maximum safe drilling height without use of a ladder or “riding the drill” is limited to 8’ (2.44M)."

It has been shown since a few years that the problem of estimating recoverable reserves should be solved by using specialized statistical techniques : whenever the selected blocks are chosen without any other constraint than a cut-off grade criterion, the problem of estimating the corresponding tonnage-grade curve is resolved by estimating the local histogram of block grades. Two major statistical techniques are currently used by geostatisticians to estimate local histograms : the "average conditional distribution" technique (Parker, Journel, Dixon 1979) and the disjunctive kriging technique. (Matheron, 1976, Jackson, Maréchal, 1979). Both have proved to be applicable in practice, with their pros and conconcerning their practibility and versatility.

INTRODUCTION With the discovery and depletion over the years of near surface ore bodies, exploration targets are tending to be at greater depth or overlain by various types of overburden which in some cases extends to considerable depth or is heavily water bearing. Access to these types of deposits for exploration and development often requires vertical shafts. This paper discusses the concept of small shaft engineering and construction, primarily for underground exploration but also for use as a low tonnage production facility or for mine ventilation. The option of a small shaft may be attractive in a number of cases, some of which are: The underground exploration of a deposit at depth where minimal expenditure is desirable until the potential of the deposit has been determined. The exploration shaft in many cases later serves as a ventilation way and second means of egress. Production of ore in a small tonnage/high-grade operation where decline access is impractical. For ventilation where other types of openings are impractical or would delay start-up of mine operations.

Drilling into coal mine roof strata to install roof bolts has the potential to release substantial quantities of respirable dust. Due to the proximity of drill holes to the breathing zone of roof bolting personnel, dust escaping the holes and avoiding capture by the dust collection system pose a potential respiratory health risk. Controls are available to complement the typical dry vacuum collection system and minimize harmful exposures during the initial phase of drilling. This paper examines the use of a bit sleeve in combination with a dusthog- type bit to improve dust extraction during the critical initial phase of drilling. A twistedbody drill bit is also evaluated to determine the quantity of dust liberated in comparison with the dust-hog-type bit. Based on the results of our laboratory tests, the bit sleeve may reduce dust emissions by one-half during the initial phase of drilling before the drill bit is fully enclosed by the drill hole. Because collaring is responsible for the largest dust liberations, overall dust emission can also be substantially reduced. The use of a twistedbody bit has minimal improvement on dust capture compared with the commonly used dust-hog-type bit.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

This paper addresses jet fans used as booster fans within mine ventilation networks. The static pressure developed by the jet fan was determined using the momentum theory. The influence of various parameters on this pressure was analyzed. A method was proposed for determination of the jet fan characteristic curve . The distance between the jet fan and a point where the fully developed static pressure can be measured was determined. It was shown that a reduction cone can significantly improve the jet fan performance. Verification experiments conducted in the Waldo mine are described.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company&apos;s Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer&apos;s requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. This paper attempts to close the gap between extensive rock testing with field measurements and the mine operator&apos;s need for safe mine layouts and alternatives. It was found that many of the variables that influence mine geometry and worker safety are relatively unimportant while others are critical. The development of empirical relationships which tie the critical variables to the "safe useful life" of a trona mine layout and observations made in 140 production areas where the variables were researched over a fifteen year period are discussed. The concepts presented may have applicability in mine design for other bedded deposits.

The electrochemical nature of mineral-grinding media interaction in the wet grinding of one and two sulfide mineral ores was investigated with regard to the flotation behaviors of the minerals. Two iron sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhotite) and mild steel were used to represent the sulfide minerals and the grinding media, respectively. Galvanic currents in two-and three-electrode combinations under abrasive and non-abrasive conditions were correlated with the floatabilities of these minerals under corresponding conditions.

The Waneta Expansion Project (WAX) is located near the existing Waneta Dam site at the confluence of the Pend d?Oreille and Columbia rivers, approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) south of Trail, BC, Canada. The WAX owners consist of a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corp. This design-build project was awarded to SNC-Lavalin in late 2010 and is expected to be operational in mid-2015. The WAX consists of a new 335-MW powerhouse, including two new Francis turbine units, each generating approximately 167 MW. The powerhouse is located downstream of the existing Waneta Dam, and will make use of excess water that would otherwise be spilled during the runoff season. Water will be funneled to the turbines through an intake structure and two 10.5- m (34.5-ft) diameter, concrete-lined Penstock Tunnels. A 10-km (6.2-mile) transmission line will connect the powerhouse to existing electrical grids. Redpath/FKCI Waneta Tunnelers (RFK) was subcontracted by the heavy civil contractor, the Aecon/SNC Lavalin (ASL) joint venture, to excavate the two penstock tunnels and install the cast-in-place concrete liner. RFK is a joint venture partnership between J.S. Redpath Ltd., an underground mine contractor located in North Bay, Ontario, and Frontier-Kemper Constructors ULC, a heavy civil tunneling contractor based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Since penstock tunnel excavation was planned using drill-and-blast methods with a significant grade of more than 17 percent, the combined experience of these two contractors was a perfect match.

Until recently sulphur uses were so broadly based that economists used sulphur consumption to measure industrial activity. However, sulphur use patterns are changing and the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers presently accounts for approximately 65% of the world&apos;s sulphur consumption compared with only 25% in 1960. This has encouraged the development of new agricultural and industrial uses for sulphur. Major emphasis has been placed on its use as a fertilizer and in the manufacture of paving materials, specialty concretes and coatings. Some of these uses could have a significant impact on future sulphur usage.

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into useable form, and as such present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and ore body compositional characteristics are all over the map! Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This paper brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.INTRODUCTIONMinerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, 20 year life of mine is not uncommon and 75 years is not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and Business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must therefore be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an “extractive” industry that is very physically-oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce very variable outputs. But, times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers, to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and non-linear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contribution are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

The reliability of large diameter, high horsepower ball mill is paramount when large production and minimum downtime is required. The 17 ft. x 56 ft. double compartment ball mill at St. Lawrence Cement Company has the first gearless drive built in North America and has the world&apos;s largest hydrodynamic bearings currently built and running. The machine has seen three years operation and has met its specifications. The mill was designed by Aerofall Mills Limited and the gearless drive built and designed by the Canadian General Electric Company. This paper discusses the operation of the first North American installation of a gearless drive ball mill from the mechanical, electrical and process aspects.

For most geologists and miners the term asbestos refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven; these fibers are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The US Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as asbestos if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions: length-greater than 5 µm; maximum diameter-less than 5 µm; and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer-causing agent), it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment. Very few recent issues have caused as much concern for the crushed stone industry as asbestos. Complicating the problem is the fact that several federal and state bureaus have greatly compounded the confusion because each has become involved in the asbestos dilemma. Simple solutions to a very complex problem have been proposed by these various governmental groups. In addition to governmental bungling is the fact that public interest groups have been able to use federal and state laws that have been enacted with a strong environmental bias to foment even greater complexities. Such is now the state of the asbestos problem. No con- firmed health risk has been associated with low-level exposure, namely crushed stone in an unbound form; a methodology for sampling and analyzing for asbestos has not been developed; a precise definition of what is asbestos does not exist, nor does a concensus among the various government groups as to what course of action to pursue. Pure asbestos as it is mined for commercial purposes does not exist in the properties mined by the crushed stone industry. Where the six asbestiform minerals do appear (to date we&apos;ve been referring mainly to chrysotile in serpentinite formations in Maryland) the amount of the asbestiform mineral present is generally quite small. They generally appear in scattered, miniscule amounts. In the case of Rockville Crushed Stone in Montgomery county, Mary- land, the chrysotile is less than 1/2 of 1% of the rock deposit. No health risk has been identified with such minute quantities of asbestos minerals. MSHA standards for the occupational health and safety of quarry workers are being met; and there is every indication that normal background levels of asbestos, throughout the surrounding countryside, are as high or higher than levels measured on roads where the rock is used in pavement or base. The problem and the controversy lie with improper terminology on the part of so-called public interest environmental groups, aided and abetted by some governmental agencies who, to be charitable, we can best describe as uninformed. The news media frequently has fanned the issue, unintentionally we&apos;d like to think, by quoting these misinformed authorities and not bothering to question the facts or adequately report balancing information handed to them. It is much better copy to talk about an asbestos cancer scare, than to deal with rather mundane measurements and descriptions that are hard to understand. At the heart of the issue is the improper use of the word asbestos. Instead of being confined to the geological description of the six asbestiform minerals-chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos-the word asbestos is also wrongly used, but too-frequently to identify many other minerals that happen to have elon-

Cost-effective underground mine configurations have been designed in highly fractured rock masses where the stone possesses a high material strength. A limestone mine in the eastern United States is used to demonstrate procedures for the geotechnical design of one such operation. The mine discussed is located in both limbs and the axis of a recumbent fold that fractured the rock mass. In a highly fractured rock mass, where the host rock has high strength, a design can be developed to alleviate intact rock failure. This is possible because in most cases as the stress levels needed for intact failures are approached, the stresses are quickly dissipated due to movement along discontinuities, which represent planes of weakness. As a result most underground failures in highly fractured rock are due to sliding or toppling. Even when intact rock fails in a highly fractured rock mass, it is the movement along an existing joint or other weakness plane that often initiates or causes this failure. It is therefore important to obtain the characteristics of weakness planes that are the discontinuities within the mass. The required information on weakness planes, geology, and strength of materials is discussed and recommendations for obtaining this information are presented. A discussion is provided on failure modes and the use of developed information for their evaluation. The impact on geotechnical design is demonstrated through pillar sizing procedures; however, this approach can also be applied to mine roof and pillar foundations.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. The total length of the project is approximately 1900 meters consisting of four main project divisions, which are described below, going from south to north. 1.Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) area, 2.Southern approach roadways to the South Portals (250 meters), including the South Rock Cut,
