INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Production Personnel Method No. Method No. Conventional 12-1 5 Longwall 9-14 Continuous 9-1 2 Shortwall 9-12 MINING VARIABLES To evaluate the constraints and interrelationships for various mining methods, it is necessary to categorize the variables which underlie system production potential. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done. Methane Liberation This ranges from none detected to low (no buildup at the face, even with minimum ventilation requirements) to moderate (the curtains must be extremely tight and tubing close to the face or methane will build up to 1 % during the loading of the car) to high (methane will build up to 170 if the miner is operated at the normal rate, even with proper ventilation). Hardness of Coal Coal hardness falls into the following categories: Soft: Soft coal is easily cut by a continuous miner. A plow could be used by longwall. Average: Coal of average hardness could be easily cut by a miner, and a shearer would be used in the longwall. Moderate: Moderately hard coal causes difficult cut-

Mining equipment, like all other equipment, is subject to failure. Since most failures occur at random and are unexpected, corrective maintenance is usually more expensive and causes more down-time than preventive maintenance. In order to reduce the number of failures and thereby increase the availability of an equipment or system, preventive maintenance can be scheduled at predetermined points of time. The preventive maintenance scheduling policies presented in this paper utilize reliability and probability theories. They can be applied to various production bottlenecks where high cost equipment precludes having sufficient quantities of stand-by units.

An air-pulsated jig has been widely adopted as a main coal washer. It may be mainly because of its many technical and economic features such as large capacity, low running cost, long life, etc. However, the recent increasing demand of fuel coal requires a higher productivity and efficiency of the air-pulsated jig. To fill this requirement theoretical and experimental investigations have been conducted on model and practical jigs in Japan. This paper generalizes the results of these investigations. In jig operation it is essentially of the most importance to create efficiently the pulsation of the water best suited for coal washing. The optimum pulsation should be determined by the theory of jigging process, and the method to realize it by that of pulsating mechanism.

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O&apos;Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Almost any subsidence monitoring program may face the following difficulties:

Investigations of underground coal gasification (UCG) have been actively pursued by the U.S. Department of Energy since the early 1970s; the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) conducted its first field experiment in 1976. In conjunction with field and laboratory studies of the process of recovering energy in the form of combustible gases from the burning of coal deposits in situ, an extensive environmental program has been conducted at LLNL under the auspices of both the U.S Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This program has focused on groundwater contamination and ground surface subsidence caused by UCG. The material presented in this paper is a summary of results from the environmental studies of UCG activities conducted by LLNL as described by Mead, et al. (1981) and supplemented by the author&apos;s experience with this program in 1980 and 1981. The following sections describe specific groundwater contamination and surf ace subsidence problems encountered during field experiments in northeastern Wyoming, and will discuss implications of preliminary findings from geohydrological investigations of a site in southwestern Washington. Finally, possible environmental control technologies that are most likely to be effective in mitigating environmental impacts are discussed.

One of the major operating costs for any labor-intensive operation is that of its employees&apos; wage and benefits package. Today&apos;s packages are extremely complex, with multiple pay rates for different grades and shifts, intricate bonus criteria, and expansive benefit packages that include all sorts of medical, dental, pension and other costs that can be "hidden" from direct examination and consideration. The problems of estimating the total cost of such a package to a company becomes even more acute at negotiation time, when pressure from both sides to settle intensify and changes to package offers come rapidly. A comprehensive system is needed that can evaluate these costs and perform sensitivity analyses, on the various components of an agreement so as to aid in the solving of major labor deadlocks, productivity problems, and cost impacts created by those agreements.

Chemical and physical properties of surface soils and overburden materials must be evaluated prior to strip mining activities. This information can be used to assess whether subsurface overburden can be equal in quality to the existing surface soils, especially when these soils are classed as prime farm lands. In Texas, materials from the Carrizo, Calvert Bluff, Simsboro, and Hooper Formations overlie the lignite. The Carrizo Formation consists of thick clean sands with poor water and nutrient retention capabilities. These materials are least suited for placement of the surface of reclaimed land. The oxidized, medium textured overburden from the Calvert Bluff and Simsboro Formations possess adequate water and nutrient properties and are better suited for sustained plant growth. Non-oxidized Calvert Bluff and Hooper sediments generally have acceptable properties for reclamation. However, caution must be exercised in vegetating these materials since they may contain acid forming sulfide minerals.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage mining at Inco Ltd.&apos;s Crean Hill mine can best be defined as a horizontal breasting method utilizing the broken ore for the mining floor and to provide wall support, with draw from a series of boxholes or draw¬points at the base of the stoping block. In choosing to shrink a given block of ore, the initial investigation centers on the ore configuration and grade, the expected ground conditions in the stoping area, the expected profit compared to alternative mining methods, the future production requirements, development lead time, the availability and type of equipment in the area, and the availability of experienced miners. These factors are weighed against other mining methods and shrinkage mining is chosen when the advantages outweigh the dis¬advantages. These will be discussed in more detail later. At Inco Ltd.&apos;s Crean Hill mine, shrinkage mining makes up 17% of total mine production and is decreasing due to the advent of advanced blasthole techniques, notably in-the-hole drilling. Shrinkage is an adaptable mining method that is currently employed in narrow irregular ore zones, as undercuts for in-the-hole blast¬hole stopes, in ore bodies that do not extend from level to level, and in areas where quick production is required with a minimum of capital outlay or minimum develop¬ment. Two major types are currently in use which are classified on the basis of type of draw system employed. These are the utilization of load-haul-dump (LHD) equipment drawing from drawpoints, and the slusher and train method drawing from boxholes into a slusher trench and loading into a train. A third method being phased out is drawing from chutes directly into a train. In all three methods the actual stoping operation remains the same. In the initial planning of a mining block, the ore body is first located using an exploration diamond drill¬ing program. This is essentially done at a 130-m (400¬ft) spacing and it gives an indication of the amount of ore, grade of ore, the configuration of the ore body, as well as other geological features such as ground condi¬tions which will affect future mining. This drilling is done from an exploration drift 165 m (500 ft) long in the hanging wall and covers a vertical extent of 330 to 670 m (1000 to 2000 ft). However, these data are not accurate enough for detailed planning. When the de¬cision has been made to mine, a preliminary develop¬ment drill drift is driven in such a position that it can serve the dual purposes of allowing the ore body to be drilled off in detail, or of later serving as a haulage or access drift. Diamond drilling from this drift is usually on a 15-m (50-ft) grid spacing and gives adequate information for detailed planning. Utilizing the drill data, a decision is made on the mining type. For a shrinkage operation, the stoping block is ideally 49 m (150 ft) in length and a maximum of 13 m (40 ft) in width. Lengths of 65 m (200 ft) are considered a practical maximum because of the length of time the back of the stope remains open during the min¬ing of a cut. A minimum length of 13 m (40 ft) is used because the amount of time spent in opening a new cut increases in comparison with the total stoping time. The maximum width of 13 m (40 ft) is used because ex¬perience with the ground indicates that generally stope backs tend to be unstable over greater widths. However, widths of 33 m (100 ft) have been mined. A minimum width of 5 m (15 ft) is used to allow an effective draw, but in unusual cases, a width of 3 m (10 ft) has been mined successfully. The dip of the ore should not be less than 1.04 rad (60°). Angles flatter than this will not pull properly resulting in inefficient mining because of ore hang-ups on the footwall side of the stope and the need for large stagings on the hanging wall. In considering shrinkage, mining ground conditions play an important role. Strong shearing, cross faulting, or dikes are avoided. These usually cause dangerous mining conditions and an alternative safer mining method which will give adequate support to these adverse ground conditions is employed. Production requirements are taken into considera¬tion when planning a shrinkage mining program. In it¬self, shrinkage mining is capable of producing ore in a relatively short time with little capital development. If quick production is required, this method can produce ore rapidly as all that is required is that the draw system be completed and the miners with jacklegs and stopers produce a limited amount of ore. The obvious disadvan¬tage is that not all the ore broken can be pulled from the stope immediately. However, a mining horizon with sev¬eral shrinkage stopes in different stages of production can adequately maintain scheduled tonnage require¬ments, the cycle being stopes under development, stopes actively mining, and stopes completed and pulling. When the decision has been made to use shrinkage mining in a given block, the haulage and draw system is driven. The proximity of the orepass system dictates whether the system is to be a LHD operation or a slusher trench operation. If the orepass system is in close prox¬imity to the stoping block, LHD equipment is employed because of its ability to operate efficiently over short haulage distances. A long tram to the orepass usually dictates a slusher trench operation with haulage by train. Internal orepass systems are used effectively with LHD equipment with a load-out and retramming taking place on a lower horizon. In addition, stoping blocks in older areas of the mine are developed track because of the capital cost involved in converting an existing level to trackless mining. DRIFT DEVELOPMENT USING LHD EQUIPMENT The haulage drift for a draw system using LHD equipment is driven parallel to the ore body in the foot¬wall at a sufficient distance to allow an 11.5-m (35-ft) drawpoint to be driven into the ore (Fig. 1). The actual position of the drift depends entirely upon the ore con¬figuration and the drift size depends on the equipment to be used. Drift sizes of 4.6 x 4.1 m (14 x 121/2 ft) for an St-4 and 3.8 x 3.6 m (111/2 x 11 ft) for an St-2 meet company and government clearance standards and allow sufficient space to accommodate a ventilation pipe. INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. Utah Development Company (UDC) operates five large opencut coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, Australia. In total, over 20 million tonnes of coking coal are exported annually from the five mines. Typically, the coal seams dip at 5 percent, are 2 to 10 metres thick, and sub-crop some 20 to 40 metres below surface. In the main, the operations are single seam, but multiseam (2, 3 or 4 seams) operations do exist and will form an increasing proportion of the mining activities as depths increase. Draglines are used as the major stripping equipment, highwall depths currently ranging from 20 to 65 metres. Whilst project feasibilities were based on stripping to a 60 metre highwall, it is now proposed to continue opencut mining to depths exceeding 100 metres. This will entail large quantities of prestripping (ahead of the draglines) and overcoming problems associated with steepening seam dips, including haulage of coal from the pits.

INTRODUCTION The Falconbridge mine ore body extends about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length and the deepest developed ore is on the 6050 level below surface. The ore zone varies in width from a few inches to over 30 m (100 ft) and the average width is 4.9 m (16 ft). Access levels are driven in the ore at 53.3-m (175-ft) intervals. The principal method of mining is overhand longitudinal cut-¬and-fill. Prior to 1962 timber square-set stoping as a secondary extraction method was used for about 15% of the total production. Undercut-and-fill was intro¬duced at Falconbridge in 1962 as a potential replace¬ment for the square-set method in heavy ground. The undercut-and-fill method was developed by Inco in the 1950s, its principal application being to transverse pillar mining. Falconbridge made modifications to this method. A feature of the mine is the No. 1 flat fault which dips 0.79 rad (45°) towards the northeast. The main characteristic of the fault is the presence of large swells of ore directly under the plane of the fault. The ground under the fault area is highly fractured and associated with massive sulfides. In the past, the ore under the fault was recovered, with difficulty, by either tight cut¬and-fill or square-set stoping. In the 1970s these meth¬ods were supplanted to a large degree by the under-cut-¬and-fill method. An advantage of the current undercut-and-fill method which uses cemented fill compared to the cut-and-fill and square-set methods is the reduction of dilution due to better control of the walls. At Falconbridge mine, it is estimated that the grade of ore produced by undercut¬and-fill is improved by approximately 10% over other methods. Where undercut-and-fill is used in very weak ground, a much greater improvement in grade can be expected. Table I shows mining production for 1974. The undercut-and-fill method was first used at Falconbridge during 1962. The first longitudinal stope was prepared for undercutting by laying down laminated beams the length of the stope and installing a lagging mat floor on top of the beams. Unconsolidated tailings fill was poured on top of the mat floor. As the cut ad¬vanced under the floor, heavy posts were placed under the laminated beams at 1.8-m (6-ft) intervals. During 1966, a radical change was made to the method when tailings fill, consolidated with portland cement, replaced the unconsolidated fill. This development eliminated the laminated beams and heavy mat floor and greatly im¬proved the stability of the stope. This system, with minor variations, is currently used at Falconbridge mine. APPLICATION The undercut-and-fill method is used to mine in¬competent ground, sills or floor pillars under mined-out levels, or a block of ore isolated between levels. It is occasionally used to advantage in sequencing produc¬tion from various mining blocks. This is done by mining a block of ore cut-and-fill method and at the same time mining the ore block directly underneath by the under¬cut-and-fill method. The undercut-and-fill mill holes at Falconbridge are either boreholes, stripped timbered raises, or steel mill holes. Boreholes and rock raises tend to slough in heavy and broken ground which increases dilution when sloughing exceeds the ore width outline and also in¬creases the difficulty of moving down to start the new cut. For example, in one installation, a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam borehole sloughed to a size of 3.7 x 5.5 m (12 x 18 ft). The undercut-and-fill method usually requires a mill hole extending from the level below the ore to the top horizon of the ore block. The customary methods of providing a mill hole are: 1) A borehole is driven from level to level through the ore block and a chute installed on the bottom level (Fig. 1). 2) An existing raise is used as a mill hole. If the raise is timbered, a steel mill hole is installed inside the timber and tailings fill poured around the steel mill hole (Fig. 1). 3) An existing steel mill hole, situated at one end of a mined-out stope, is used as the mill hole for an ad¬jacent undercut-and-fill ore block. The mill hole posi¬tion is determined when planning the mining sequence of the first stope (Fig. 2).

One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

INTRODUCTION Historically, pollution control in the metal-ore mining industry has been very limited. Unless mine water contained large quantities of solids, it was generally discharged without any treatment. If treatment was used to control solids, it was principally the provision of a settling basin in the form of a tailings impoundment used in conjunction with an associated metal ore dressing facility. Recently, however, a growing awareness of the adverse environmental impacts of mine drainage, coupled with strict environmental laws, has prompted the mining industry to look at new technologies and to refine the existing methods to further treat the wastes generated. This industry is unique in that waste loadings are extremely variable, and a "typical facility with typical waste loads" does not exist. Consequently, one waste- water treatment system cannot be utilized on an industry wide basis; rather, each treatment system must be designed specifically for the pollutants in each individual discharge. Public Law 92-500, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (FWPCA) Amendments of 1972, became effective on Oct. 18, 1972. This law completely restructured Federal laws and philosophies underlying the Federal approach to water pollution control. Prior to the 1972 amendments, the principal Federal regulatory tool had been water-quality standards based on a designated use for a particular body of water. The concept was that waste disposal into water bodies is a desirable and acceptable use of the water body if it does not interfere with other beneficial uses. This had the effect of requiring various degrees of treatment and, consequently, various economic hardships on industries de- pendent upon their location. In many waterways. it is very difficult to quantitatively relate discharges to water quality. The 1972 amendments changed the basic philosophy, as stated in the Senate Committee report on the bill, to ". . . no one has the right to pollute . . . that pollution continues because of technological limits, not because of any inherent right to use the nation&apos;s waterways for the purpose of disposing of wastes." Pursuant to Sections 301, 304(b), and 306 of the FWPCA Amendments of 1972, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was required to establish effluent standards applicable to all industrial discharges. These standards must be based upon the application of the "best practicable control technology currently avail- able" (BPT) and the application of the "best available technology economically achievable" (BAT). The BPT and BAT levels must be achieved industry-wide by July 1, 1977, and July 1, 1983, respectively. WASTE SOURCES The waste-water situation in the mining segment of the ore mining and dressing industry is unlike that encountered in most other industries. Most industries (e.g., the milling segment of this industry) utilize water in the specific processes they employ. This water frequently becomes contaminated during the process and must be treated prior to discharge. However, in the mining segment, process water normally is not utilized in the actual mining of ores (exceptions are hydraulic mining operations and dust control), but it is a natural occurrence that interferes with mining activities and must be removed before mining can commence. Water enters mines by ground-water infiltration and surface runoff, and it comes into contact with materials in the host rock, ore, and overburden. The underground mine must pump large quantities of ground water to prevent flooding of the mine. Water from surface mining operations generally occurs as a result of surface runoff of rainwater. Generally, mining operations control surface runoff through the use of diversion ditching and grading to prevent, as much as possible, excess water from entering the working area. Nevertheless, some surface runoff does come into contact with the working area and may become contaminated. The quantity of water from an .ore mine is unrelated, or only indirectly related, to production quantities. De- pending upon its quality, the mine water may require treatment before it can be discharged into the surface drainage network. The variability of water quality from mines can best be demonstrated by looking at Table 1. This table shows the range of pollutant concentrations in untreated discharges from three different categories of mines (as categorized by EPA in the development of BPT and BAT effluent standards for the metal-mining industry). Data for this table were obtained during EPA&apos;s preparation of effluent standards for this industry. The parameters shown on the table are the pollutant parameters of primary interest in this industry; blanks in the table indicate that data were not available, and the parameter is not expected to be present in significant quantities. Other pollutant parameters are present in mining waste water, but they are either incidentally removed in the treatment process or are found only in trace amounts. The three categories comprise more than 90% of the metal production value in the United States and approximately 95% of the total mine discharges. It is important to note that not all parameters are found in significant concentrations at all locations. IMPACT ON WATER QUALITY One of the most troublesome mine-drainage problems is acidity. Although generally associated with coal mining, acid mine drainage frequently occurs from other types of mines. Although the exact mechanism of acid mine drainage is not fully understood, it generally is believed that pyrite (iron sulfide, FeS,) is oxidized by oxygen (Eq. 1) or ferric iron (Eq. 2) to produce ferrous sulfate (FeSO4) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) . The mining of ores associated with pyritic material exposes the pyrites to water and oxygen and grossly accelerates the natural oxidation processes, resulting in the significant production of acid mine drainage.

Sublevel stoping generally is a large-scale open stoping method. It sometimes is referred to as long-hole or blasthole stoping. This method usually is applied to strong ore bodies that require minimal support and are surrounded by strong country rock. The ore body should be fairly regular in shape and well-defined. The dip of the footwall normally should be sufficient to allow broken ore to gravitate freely, although the method has been adapted successfully to mine some of the flatter ore bodies. Sublevel stoping is not dependent on the width of the ore body. Widths of less than 6 m (20 ft), however, make the utilization of long-hole drilling techniques more difficult. The main criteria for sublevel open stoping are competent ore and stable host rock, regular ore boundaries, and a footwall dip that exceeds the angle of repose of broken ore. Basically, the method entails providing access to the ore body at various subintervals between the main haul- age levels in order to drill and blast the intervening ore. Stope drilling is carried out from drilling drifts on the sublevels, and the ore is blasted in slices towards an open face, which generally is vertical on the downholes and may be inclined towards the open face for the up holes. The blasted ore gravitates to the bottom of the stope and is collqcted through drawpoints. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical sublevel stoping mine. The method requires extensive ore body development with relatively high capital expenditures. How- ever, much of the development is in ore, and production costs are comparatively low. Productivity rates are in the 13.6 to 27.2 t (15 to 30 st)/manshift range. The drilling, blasting, and loading operations are performed independently, and equipment utilization is high. Large outputs can be obtained with few units and limited personnel. Dilution with waste rock may occur if ore boundaries are irregular or if caving occurs, but 100% of the ore within the stope usually is recovered. Pillar recovery sometimes is a problem. It is at this point that most of the waste dilution occurs. At the time data was gathered for this report (1973), the sublevel open stoping method was used by more than 21% of the metallic ore mines in the US (9 out of 42 mines producing 1088 + t/day (1200 + stpd) and provided more than 12% of the total metallic ore production from these mines. DEVELOPMENT Access to a sublevel open stope mine is gained by a slope or shaft that is normally sunk in the footwall of the ore zone, away from any possible effects from blasting or other production operations in the stoping process. Main level interval is selected and usually varies from 45.7 to 121.9 m (150 to 400 ft), depending on the vertical extent of the ore body, the number of drawpoints required to maintain output, and the eventual stope height. The main haulage drifts are located at the bottom of the stope horizon, either directly in ore or in the footwall, with access crosscuts at intervals. Raises are driven up through the ore to connect to the level above and provide access and ventilation to the sublevel drilling drifts, which are driven horizontally in the ore for the length of the stope. Depending on the drawpoint system to be used, the stope is either undercut by a raise-and-cone system, from a scram or slusher drift, or simply provided with a drilling drift from which access is made at intervals to the main haulage level. A raise driven either at the end or in the middle of the stope (if stope access is from both ends) provides a start for opening up a vertical slot across the stope to establish a free or open face for long-hole drilling and blasting. Sublevel stoping has proved to be a relatively safe and economical system.

Potential users must evaluate the combustion properties of these fuels to determine equipment and operating changes required for their use. Most work to date has been done with boiler applications. However, many potential non-boiler applications exist in the metals and minerals industry. These applications require specific evaluations appropriate for the processes involved.

Texas Utilities Generating Company (TUGCo) surface mines lignite for use as a boiler fuel at mine mouth generation stations. Currently, the annual lignite production requirement of approximately 28 million tons necessitates mining across approximately 1,600 surface acres each year. The mining operations, located in Freestone, Panola, Titus, and Hopkins counties, Texas, have drastically disturbed some 13,000 surface acres to depths of up to 110 feet since initial startup in 1971. The TUGCo mining philosophy, a commitment made prior to initiation of mining operations and prior to any mining regulations, includes a return of mined-out land to private ownership in the most useful state possible. In the areas of TUGCo operations, the local economies are based upon agricultural production. Historic land use surveys have typically shown a trend from row crop production to pastureland for cattle production. During the 1960?s, the percentage of acreage devoted to row crop production approached zero with respect to the total acreage devoted to agriculture. TUGCo reclamation operations have therefore emphasized restoration of land to a state that is favorable to cattle production

The paper presents a description of the procedures that were used to generate a ventilation criterion based on measurements of ambient mine air exhaust pollutant gases and ventilation airflow quantities. Today&apos;s economics dictate that a ventilation requirement be based on actual operating conditions. This will assure optimum economics and a safe working environment at the same time. The paper presents a methodology by which a ventilation requirement is based on the average maximum expected concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) that equipment operators in one of our Southeast Missouri mines will be subjected to. A graph has been generated whereby the expected maximum levels of NO, NO2, CO and CO2 are plotted against the ventilation quantity of a mine stope.
