In order to effectively model subsidence caused by underground openings, a two-dimensional computer code has been developed which couples near- and far-field response. The near-field is simulated by a discrete element block code and a finite difference code represents the continuum region in the far-field. The explicit equations allow rapid and inexpensive solutions to geometries which may lead to subsidence. Two sample problems are presented which illustrate the important features of the code.

Salt, because of its plasticity, exerts a major influence in deformation. Resulting salt structures are common world-wide. A special type, salt domes, are associated with thick sequences of sediments deposited over salt. Their upward intrusion is generally thought to be in response to buoyancy. Mines in salt domes reveal an internal pattern compatible with large amounts of vertical flowage. Caprock, the end product of accumulation of anhydrite from salt dissolution, attests to long continued upward growth and concomitant truncation by moving underground waters. Concepts of modes of growth are evaluated and related to problems in utilization.

Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. Selmer A/S, Box 6035, Etterstad, Oslo 6.

The information I have concerning the early in situ uranium mining activities in Texas is "sketchy." Apparently, the first test was conducted between 1967 and 1971 in Gonzales County, north of Yorktown, at the Dueterstat Site, by, City Service. Other tests were run in Webb County at the Bruni Site, and in Live Oak County at the Burns and Clay-West Sites in the early 1970's. During this period the Texas Water Quality Board maintained a general surveillance of these tests. In mid-1974, Mr. Glen Davis walked into our Austin offices and requested a permit for Atlantic Richfield's first in situ uranium mine. This permit, issued in January, 1975, was for 3 acres of production, and was the first such permit issued in the United States. It formalized the regulation of in-situ uranium mining in Texas. The 4 years since then have been characterized by growth and change. Today there are 20 permits approved for approximately 2,000 production acres. These permits are issued to 8 companies at 13 sites in 6 counties. There are 7 additional permits being processed, or on the verge of being applied for. These will involve possibly another 2,000 production acres, 3 more companies in one more county.

Boliden's activities in- clude the marketing of proven Boliden technique and know-how. Boliden Metall - the mining and metallurgical company within the Boliden Group - produces about 13 million mtpy of ores at mines in northern and central Sweden. Boliden has, over the years, become a specialist in processing poly- metallic sulphide ores and its eight concentrators presently serve 15 mines. Boliden has a long history of close cooperation with Swedish and foreign manufacturers in developing new products and processes.

Over the years, electric utilities have been faced with declining steam-coal quality, rising coal prices, and increasingly rigid and costly environmental standards. As a result, many utilities are beginning to show an interest in coal cleaning to upgrade coal by improving its heating value and reducing its sulfur content. Among the primary questions that must be answered for these electric utilities is whether the cost of coal cleaning can be offset by the potential cost savings in coal transportation and utilization in power generation. In search of at least a preliminary answer to this question, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) engaged Bechtel to perform a case-by-case economic study to examine the cost effects of using cleaned versus raw coal to fuel new electric power plants. The results of two of the seven cases studied which involved western coals - one from Montana and another from Utah - are reported in this paper. Coal cleaning appeared to be a cost effective option for the Utah coal, but only marginally economical for the Montana coal. These cost results are expected to change to favor coal cleaning to a greater extent with the application of the final revised New Source Performance Standards regulating SO2 emissions just issued by the EPA. The study was based on the regulation originally proposed by the EPA under the 1977 Clean Air Act Amendments.

Development of computer-based information systems is predicated on the merger of rapidly developing computer technology and growing managerial demands for information. The focus of this section is on managing the development and implementation of information systems for the 1980's. It is the experience of the majority of contributors to this volume that among unresolved problems of major dimensions in a mineral organization are those of managing the computer-based information systems resource itself. There are three major reasons for this: (1) mineral information systems are relatively new to the senior management of a mining company or a mineral organization; (2) problems are compounded by a developing technology, a new type of personnel with a changing experience/education mix; and (3) an organizational structure and location which, in many organizations, are still being examined. The three authors in this section present aspects of managing the information systems function which, based on their experience, are common to the solution of the problem. The premise that the information systems function has been placed appropriately within the entire business plan of the firm has been made by the authors in their discussion of the various aspects of the management process.

Prior to initiating construction of a new mineral development project, sponsoring organizations must be convinced that the operation will be viable. Proof is typically provided by the feasibility study. Considerable man hours will be spent in assessing and evaluating data on the deposit, its environment, and the means of development. Impact studies must be made for various scales of operation, inclusion of by-products, new methods of treatment, deferent levels of integration, and infrastructure configuration. Examples of current materials handling cost estimates are provided from the ongoing investigation in which Amoco is a participant at Ok Tedi in Papua New Guinea and Gag Island in Indonesia.

1. INTRODUCTION The economic importance of bringing a new mine to production in the shortest possible time, is well known. In recent years the rate of escalation of mining costs has accelerated more rapidly than at any time in the past. This fact has enhanced the need to reduce time schedules and made it an overriding and predominant objective when planning new shafts. The squeezed profit margins and widely fluctuating metal prices have also increased the emphasis being placed on this aspect. Moreover the increase in the present value of future profits due to the reduction in the time element, can be so substantial that expenditure on equipment and additional labour can be justified conditional on sufficient gain in shaft sinking speed being achieved. The emphasis on time saving becomes more abundantly clear when considering the very large increase in the capital required to bring a modern underground mine to production. As an example, the initial capital expenditure requirements for a large new gold mine in the Western Transvaal, which has commenced production recently, is estimated at R200M, and a major extension to another deep level mine in the same area is estimated at R300M. With the uncertainty of future metal prices and the recent trends in increasing inflation, it is becoming more difficult than ever to estimate the profitability of proposed mining projects and any cost saving due to more rapid sinking of shafts can only assist in this respect. Since the shaft systems are frequently the most expensive set of underground excavations and no other underground work can commence until they are completed, the speed of shaft sinking is subject to closer scrutiny than in the past. In the following sections of this paper the factors contributing to the high average advance rates achieved by South African shaft sinkers are discussed. It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the effect of any single factor, in isolation, on the overall sinking achievements. However, the cumulative effect of improvements made in the inter-related activities is, probably, the most important contributor. Although there has not been any single major technical change or innovation to shaft sinking practices in the last decade, the average sinking speeds have increased, due to improved application and technical improvements in established procedures. 2. GENERAL When discussing South African shaft sinking techniques and average sinking rates compared to those achieved in other parts of the world, it should be remembered that the size and depth of South African shafts are often considerably greater than in most other countries. The Bureau of Mines measured the geochemical changes as H2S04 was used for in situ uranium leaching by Rocky Mountain Energy Company near Casper, Wyoming. Cores and ground water were analyzed before leaching. Water samples were taken from observation wells located between injection and production wells as the leach solution was brought up to full strength in several steps. Measurements were made of pH, Eh, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, dissolved oxygen, HC03, U, V, Na, K, Ca, Mg, SO4, C1, Mo, Mn, Fe, Al, Si, F, P, As, and Se. The data were gathered to assist in geochemical modeling of leaching and to study the potential environmental effects of acid leaching. Environmental considerations appear favorable. For example, the concentration of Se, a toxic element often found in uranium deposits, stayed below the EPA standard for drinking water.

In the hierarchy of performing mine planning tasks, production scheduling is naturally at the bottom. Yet good production scheduling is probably the most demanding and difficult task to achieve for various reasons. Being the last task in the mine planning hierarchy, a proper production schedule must not only conform to both the long-range and the short- range mine plans but also satisfy many practical details that are unique to day-to-day operations. For example, the averages which were good enough for both long-range and short- range mine planning are no longer good enough for production scheduling. Instead, the variations become the overriding concern. The answer must also be obtained quickly and on time, thus adding another dimension to the overall problem. Because of these considerations, many production scheduling problems have been begging for solution during the past decade. Many attempts were made to solve the production scheduling problems in the past using computers and the available operations research (OR) techniques, particularly among academic groups. However, it is probably true that, compared with the current full-time computer usage in long-range and short-range mine planning, very little computer usage is being made in production scheduling to date.

There are many types of filters designed to separate a solid from a liquid, including plate and frame presses, pressure leaf filters, gravity filters and vacuum filters. This discussion will be limited to continuous vacuum filtration and, specifically, to continuous rotary vacuum disc filters, drum filters and horizontal belt filters. The use of vacuum filtration can be advantageous in that: 1. The feed slurry can be delivered to the filter either by gravity or by a simple, inexpensive low pressure pump that only has to overcome the resistance of the feed piping system. 2. The filter equipment does not have to withstand high pressures. Consequently, a wide range of materials of construction, including plastic and fiberglas reinforced polyester (FRP), can be used in the fabrication. 3. After the form time, the filter cake is exposed to the atmosphere and the cake is accessible for further operations such as mechanical or physical dewatering, washing, and sampling on a continuous basis. 4. The discharge of the dewatered solids is continuous for directly feeding to the next operation; for example, a dryer. 5. Various methods of discharge can be fitted to the filter to effect optimum discharge of the dewatered cake solids. The principal of operation of a vacuum filter, regardless of type, is basically the same. The filter incorporates a filter medium supported on a drainage system and arranged so that the mixture to be separated (feed slurry) can be introduced to one side of the filter medium on which the solids are trapped and through which the liquid (filtrate) flows due to the applied vacuum.

Results of in situ investigations are discussed providing comparisons of rock mass deformability measurements by three methods: 'petite sismique' technique, the Goodman borehole jack and flat jacks. The tests were performed in exploratory tunnels constructed for site characterization purposes of an underground hydro-electric scheme. Due to the large number of data (41 petite sismique measurements, 45 Goodman jack tests and 19 flat jack measurements), it was possible to evaluate thoroughly the testing techniques employed. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the problems encountered in the interpretation of the results and to offer suggestions for selecting in situ tests. INTRODUCTION In situ tests are expensive and time consuming but they are an important aid in tunneling applications since they can provide deformability data of rock masses in contrast to rock material characteristics obtainable from small laboratory specimens. Some in situ tests are relatively easy to perform but their reliability may be in question unless a comparison of the data obtained by several different test methods is possible. Although many in situ techniques are available for determination of rock mass deformability (1), those more convenient to use are the Goodman jack, flat jacks and 'petite sismique. These methods are considered convenient because the Goodman jack is a borehole device; flat jacks can provide not only deformability data but also information about the stress field around excavations; while 'petite sismique' is based on seismic refraction surveys. Accordingly, these three methods have been selected for comparison.

When exploration shows a mineral deposit to be of importance, the subsequent work of defining the limits or boundaries of the ore body and preparing it for the extraction of the mineral is termed development (Young, 1946). In underground mining, development also connotes the work that is involved in opening up a deposit preparatory to stoping or productive operations. In this section, mine development is defined to include all studies and operations that will enable a sound evaluation of an explored ore body from the technical and financial standpoints. Though the ultimate objective of all mine development activities is the same, the scope and detail of these activities vary depending on the type of ore body (e.g., flat bodies, lenses and sheets, massive deposits, narrow veins, and bedded deposits), and the method of working the deposit (e.g., under- ground or surface methods or a combination of both of the methods). Therefore, the various contributions in section 3 address such topics as long-range planning, feasibility studies, and valuation for many types of ore bodies and different mining methods. This introductory review is divided into three major parts. In the first part, long-range planning aspects are briefly discussed with .an emphasis on current trends that affect mine planning. In the second part, an overview is provided of the contents in the mine development and valuation section. In the last part, remarks are made on the status, scope, and future of quantitative and computer methods in mine planning and development.

1. Introduction This is a report on applications of the earth pressure type balanced shield tunneling projects executed under narrow streets on soft alluvial layers in Japan. Japan is a long island country surrounded by the sea. Steep mountain ranges run along the archipelago and numerous rivers originate from the mountains, leaving only limited areas of flat land along the upper and middle reaches of the streams. The majority of cities in Japan are on soft alluvial layers. Alluvium represents an extremely complex soil formation, sections bordering diluvium being characterized by sharp undulations. Various difficulties are therefore encountered in shield tunneling work undertaken in such ground conditions. Particularly, at work sites lying in an unstable, waterbearing layer with high permeability, shield excavation becomes utterly impossible, hampered by large amounts of underground water as well as land collapsing caused by the water. Even when work can somehow be accomplished by using chemical grouting or by lowering ground water level, which require extra expenses and time, undesirable effects such as ground surface settlement are unavoidable in projects undertaken in the past. The newly developed method allows safe and accurate tunnel excavation at normal speed and without giving any adverse effects on buildings above, even under such unstable ground conditions. An outline of this new method was announced at the "International Tunnel Symposium '78" held in Tokyo, and the method has since been employed in a number of tunneling projects in this country. The Technology Application Center, in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of Mines Liaison Program, is studying the use of Landsat data for the monitoring of coal surface mine reclamation activities. Landsat may provide sufficient information to reduce the number of on-site inspections now required. The focus of the project has been the Navajo Coal Mine located in north- western New Mexico and operated by Utah International, Inc. On October 15, 1977, a field team recorded spectral measurements at the mine during the time of Landsat's overpass and a corresponding aerial photographic flight. Training sets were selected from the ground and aircraft data representing vegetated, graded, ungraded and natural environments. A supervised classification of the data was performed by the Stanford University Remote Sensing Laboratory then correlated to aerial photos and mine maps. The results, to date, have been very encouraging.

Introduction The city of Nuremberg, located in Bavaria in the Federal Republic of Germany, started building a subway in 1967. The construction operations began in a southern suburb, where no complications were encountered in the design and execution of the job. As the first subway line approached the downtown area of the city, the civil engineering challenges increased rapidly. Tunnels had to be excavated next to, or below precious historical buildings, and the work of the responsible engineers was closely watched by the public, who were very anxious about any damage to the existing beautiful old houses and churches. The job has been handled successfully to date in cooperation with the owner-designer, the geotechnical consultant and the contractors, who jointly went through a process of systematic learning and gathering of experience, and who developed a modern tunneling technique specifically tailored to the natural properties of the encountered ground conditions and the requirements of the city of Nuremberg. The application of scientific methods has been an important part of this development. Kennecott's Ray mine is located about 145 km (90 miles) north of Tucson in the Mineral Creek mining district of central Arizona. Mining in the district started in the late 1800's. The Ray mine itself was first mined by under- ground methods in 1911 and was changed to an open-pit operation in 1952. Mineralization is complex and includes sulfide, silicate, and native copper mineralization, as well as minor amounts of molybdenite. Sulfide ore, mined at Ray, is shipped by rail to Kennecott's concentrator and smelter at Hayden, 32 km (20 miies) away. Silicate ore, mostly chrysocolla, is processed near the mine in a vat leaching-electro- winning plant. The mine consists of two sulfide areas: (1) the West pit and the Central pit (the original Pearl Handle pit) and (2) a silicate area on the northeast perimeter of the Central pit. The pit now is over 304 m (1000 ft) deep and approximately 3048 m (10,000 ft) long. Roads within the ultimate pit are limited to a grade of 10%, while those outside the pit are limited to 8%. The mining equipment consists of 40 Wabco 1094 (120-st) haulage trucks [ranging from 109 to 227 t (120 to 250 st)], 12 electric shovels [ranging from 6 to 23 m (7 to 25 yd)], and 3 11-m (12-yd) Dart production loaders.
