In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Certain health and safety hazards occur entirely unexpectedly in some subterranean excavations. Although ground support is not the subject of this paper, ground failure can result in large and often uncontrolled flow of fluids into an excavation. Even when there is no ground failure, the disturbance of nature's equilibrium between rock or unconsolidated alluvium or rubble and the contained fluids poses severe problems to a well planned operation. Optimum conditions for safe operation cannot be the sole criterion for site selection. Some mineral deposits form in zones of structural weakness, others form where hydrothermal alteration substantially weakens the enclosing rock, and tabular deposits such as coal and evaporites inevitably undermine large areas. Excavation to acquire mineral values cannot be relocated. The same is often true for tunnels driven to connect distant points by the most direct route. Rivers and mountains cannot he avoided, and the cost of lengthening a tunnel--by even a fraction of a percent--must be strongly justified. No responsible engineer will knowingly select a dangerous route for excavation, but to what extent do engineers attempt to assess the health and safety hazards that may be reasonably expected? How, specifically, can methane explosions, water and sand flooding, dangerous dusts, toxic gases, thermal shock and radar poisoning be eliminated or minimized through systematic advance planning?

INTRODUCTION For the past 25 years, tunnel support requirements have frequently been determined, at least in North American practice, by classifying the rock according to the system proposed by Terzaghi (1), using one or more of the 8 Rock Conditions which he defined, the rock load then being selected within the range given for each Condition. However, there is a lack of published data comparing Terzaghi loads with actual measured rock loads, and it would appear that the degree of conservatism, or otherwise, of the Terzaghi approach is very often unknown. Excavation of 4 large diameter tunnels at the Tarbela Dam Project in Pakistan afforded an opportunity to compare Terzaghi and measured loads, through instrumentation of the steel ribs installed for temporary support, and by classification of the geology exposed during the tunnelling operations. In addition, the deformation of the rock surrounding the tunnels was monitored during excavation by means of borehole extensometers installed prior to the start of tunnelling. This paper describes the tunnel instrumentation and the results obtained therefrom, and relates these results to the Terzaghi load coefficients. Most construction projects, however, are subject to delays and/or disruptions which adversely affect the time (start, duration, and completion) and cost aspects of the project. Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

Several types of tunnel supports are being investigated experimentally and analytically at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the sponsorship of the Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation. The results of work on two types will be discussed here. These are steel sets and continuous, monolithic steel-fiber-reinforced concrete liners. The latter is a model of a short length of liner that might result from a continuous slip-forming operation in a tunnel excavated with a boring machine. Tests have been performed on both types of support and analyses are being developed which will greatly broaden the scope of the test program. The objective of these studies is to improve the understanding of basic behavior of these supports, and to develop techniques for their analysis. The analyses will then be used to perform parameter studies that will lead to more rational procedures for structural design. The tests provide a check on the accuracy of the analysis and demonstrate the overall behavior and modes of failure. Another part of the project is concerned with the interaction of support and medium, and thus prediction of loads for the supports. These studies are presented in greater detail in a recent report (1). A brief outline of results obtained to date are presented in this paper. The high tension process which separates materials based on relative differences in surface conductivity has been very successful in recovering non-ferrous metals from municipal waste. Aluminum is by far the largest constitutent of the total non-ferrous metal fraction; accounting for >95% in most localities. Wire and insulation mixtures from industrial wastes have been treated commercially for several years by a high tension process initially developed for use in the iron ore industry. The wire and insulation application was a forerunner of municipal waste dry treatment technology. In the past eighteen months the rotating-drum-type electrostatic separator has undergone extensive testing and development in order that the process might be efficiently adapted to the recovery of aluminum from municipal waste.

This report concerns Contract No. 3B of the Port Richmond Project, for the Department of Water Resources of the City of New York. It involves the construction of 7, 000 ft. of 7 ft. finish I. D. interceptor sewer by tunneling in soft ground, as well as associated manholes, regulator chambers, siphons and miscellaneous sewers and structures, beneath a heavily travelled perimeter road in Staten Island. The Contractor is Richmond Constructors, a joint venture of Grow Tunneling Corp., sponsor, MacLean Grove & Company, Incorporated, Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc., and Andrew Catapano Co., Inc. Project manager is Paul DeMarco, Vice-President of Grow Tunneling Corp. The cortract, as designed and bid, requires the use of liner plates 101 -0" O. D., and both cast iron and steel designs of several widths were included in the bid documents by the owner. The specifications also required the contractor to install and put into operating condition, prior to commencement of mining, a complete low pressure compressed air plant and all accessories for mining in compressed air, even though the contractor was given the option of using other methods of ground water control. A third requirement of the specifications was that a shield be used, either manual or mechanical, and with full provision for "breasting". REAM (for Rapid Excavation And Mining) is a method of rock fragmentation by high-velocity projectile impact developed by Physics International Company. This paper reports the results of field testing over the last two years. The success of the method is based on the fact that the amount of rock broken per shot scales nonlinearly with projectile impact energy. Thus, high energy impact yields spectacularly low specific energies for rock breakage. The field work reported used 90- and 105-mm military guns to accelerate 8-1/2 and 10-pound concrete and steel projectiles to velocities of 5000 to 5500 fps. All tests were performed in a competent 25,000 psi granodiorite at Hope Valley, California. During the first year of field testing 26 feet of 13-foot-diameter tunnel were produced with the 105-mm gun. The first 20 feet of this tunnel were line-drilled to aid in producing a stable portal. During the second year the tunnel was extended an additional 29 feet using the 90-mm gun. The 55-foot tunnel was produced by 590 shots. Between 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 tons of granite were broken by each shot. A silenced 90-mm gun was placed underground and the tunnel portal closed with a steel barrier. Overpressures of less than 1 psi were measured on the inside of the barrier, corresponding to an impulse noise of about 170 db. The muck produced was similar to drill and blast muck. Overbreak and ground support problems appeared to be less than with drill and blast. The contour of the tunnel was easily controlled using the 90-mm gun; the tests were also conducted using a 57-mm gun for trimming. Projections indicate that advance rates with REAM will be three to seven times faster than drill and blast, at less than two-thirds the cost. This is based on the development of a fully integrated continuous system and an inexpensive propellant giving a total expendables cost of less than $3 per shot. Other applications of the REAM technology are found in secondary breakage for open pit mining, in drilling large diameter holes, and in underground mining for longwall mining, overhand stoping, and raising.

Construction of the first phase of the Sao Paulo Metro, the North-South Line, will be completed late in 1974. The downtown section of this line consists of 2.2 miles of 19.6-foot diameter soft ground tunnels and 3 subway stations. The entire tunnel - station package was let to one contractor. A plan and profile of the tunnels and stations is shown on Figure 1. Passage of the tunnels under Boa Vista Street in the Sao Paulo Financial District was one of the major challenges. The street is only 50 feet wide from building line to building line and flanked by 10 to 20 story buildings. The tunnels pass within 4 feet of adjacent footings. Further south, the tunnels run 13 feet below the flat foundations of the Caixa Economica, a massive 11 to 14 story building. Surface settlement had to he limited to less than .07 feet/tunnel and good face control and grouting procedures were essential. For this reason, full face cutting wheel tunneling machines were selected to drive the tunnels south of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia which included Boa Vista Street and the Caixa Economica. The tunnels north of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia were driven under a fairly wide Avenue and greater settlements were permitted. Open face shields were selected to drive these tunnels. Most of the work has now been completed and analyzed. There is a growing interest among transportation planners to make more use of the subsurface to preserve the landscape and make transportation more efficient and economical. At the present time, utilization of the underground for transportation facilities is severely restrained by the adverse environmental impact and high construction costs. However, recent studies performed by the United States Department of Transportation indicate that, in spite of such problems, the volume of underground construction has significantly increased during recent years and projections point to continuation of these trends(1). It is estimated that the total volume of transportation tunnel construction will exceed $4 billion in this decade. This level of Investment justifies a significant research program. Due to the common interest in transportation tunnels and to the similarities of problems encountered during their construction, the tunneling research activities of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are closely coordinated with the programs other agencies of the U. S. Department of Transportation DOT); specifically, the Federal Railroad Administration (PRA) and the Urban mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). The FHWA is responsive to the particular needs of these agencies but will benefit from the research results obtained also. In 1971, the Office of Secretary, DOT, initiated plans for an overall coordination of the DOT, FICA, UMTA, and FHWA tunneling research activities. The objectives of this effort have been to reduce tunneling costs by 30% and to increase the rate of excavation by 200% within 10 years. In considering the use of underground space for civil works functions, there are several criteria that must be met if transfer of any of them is to occur. It is important to recognize that these criteria involve social and political as well as conventional engineering and economic considerations. It is the purpose of this report to identify certain of these criteria and develop a set of measures that will permit the evaluation of the potential benefit of transferring civil works functions underground. The work reported here was completed for the ASCE and is contained in the report, Undergound Space, 1973. If one examines the total direct and indirect economic return from the location of civil works in subsurface rather than surface space, sizeable benefits accrue. This occurs largely because design, construction, operating and maintenance costs of these systems are highly dependent upon the forces exerted on these systems by the surface enviroment itself. Transferring of these facilities to underground space would eliminate a large segment of those costs. It is equally true that civil works functions compete with other uses for surface space and generate significant conflicts with these competing uses. Highway construction takes land from other productive uses. Electrical transmission lines conflict in terms of safety and aesthetics with adjacent social activities. Assuming that construction costs can be made equivalent, the analyses in the previous report indicate that the locating of all civil works functions underground would yield an annual net savings to the society of the order of 60 billion dollars. Glass sands fall into that extremely select category of mineral deposits that requires a fantastic degree of natural concentration (95% +) of a single component before they can even be considered as ores suitable for further refinement. The combination of geological factors that has produced such an environment of "mineralogical single-mindedness" has appeared only rarely. Factors that require consideration in the economic evaluation of a potential glass-sand deposit can be grouped into three categories: 1) geological (e.g., size, shape, structure); 2) petrographic (e.g., grain size, accessory minerals, nature of iron contaminants); 3) geographic - political (e.g., proximity to consumer, size of market, zoning restrictions). Of particular con ern is the nature of the iron contamination. Iron-bearing species appear as 1) accessory mineral grains, either detrital or authigenic, 2) cements, 3) grain coatings, and 4) quartz-grain inclusions. Selection of the cheapest form of beneficiation requires precise information on the mineralogy of the iron species and their detailed petrography. Because of the antipathetic relationships, in many parts of the United States and Canada between the geographical locations of glass plants and the geological distribution of glass sands, the selection of ac suitable source for a particular glass plant may be dichotomous. One may seek either an exceedingly pure "classic" type glass sand that is relatively distant and whose cost includes a major transportation charge or a relatively proximate and somewhat "impure" source whose cost includes a substantial fee for beneficiation.

Nearly 17 years ago a major producer of synthetic zeolites started an extensive exploration program for natural zeolite deposits which resulted in the discovery of over 170 occurrences in the western United States. A few years later several of the other producers and consumers of synthetic zeolites also started similar exploration programs. Since then, small quantities of natural zeolite minerals have been produced from at least 12 deposits in the United States. Of these the Bowie deposit, about 13 miles north of Bowie, Arizona, is the most important,having produced over 5,000 tons of vitric tuff zeolitically altered to the mineral chabazite and minor amounts of the minerals erionite and clinoptilolite. Mining Districts and Mineral Deposits of Arizona compiled by Charles A. Mardirosian, Consulting Geologist, estimates the value of the total production from the Bowie deposit at a very conservative $2,000,000. Unfortunately, none of the companies responsible for the discovery and the initial production of natural zeolites made any effort to develop the high volume, low cost applications of this unique mineral raw material. Instead, they developed only the high unit value uses to supplement their existing synthetic molecular sieve product lines. With the producers of synthetic zeolites thinking in pounds and not in tons, further development of natural zeolite deposits stagnated for over a decade.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

Development of improved transportation networks in major urban centers has led more and more to underground construction, the only reasonable solution for decreasing surface traffic congestion. Excavations required by these projects usually cause decompression of the surrounding soil mass which results in subsidence of several centimeters. While these magnitudes of subsidence have no consequences in undeveloped areas, they are often unacceptable in urban areas where existing buildings, structures and utilities are endangered. Recent tunneling projects for the extension of the Paris Metropolitan Transit System (R.A.T.P.) underground network were carried out with this in view and gave rise to the development of a number of innovative techniques for minimizing ground decompression and subsidence. As shown in Figure 1, the recent R.A.T.P. expansion program includes a new express metro, 46 km long, crossing Paris from East to West, and the extension of many existing metro lines in the suburbs. From the start, R.A.T.P. was faced with many unique technical problems for which there was little precedent experience. The structures to be built have large dimensions, with cross-sections typically ranging from 40 to 300 m2, and exceptionally to 600 m2. The new lines are often very deep because the shallow profile is already congested by the existing metro, interceptors, sewers and a very large number of utilities. As a result, new construction is often below ground water level by as much as 20 m. Moreover, the geology varies widely from hard limestone with compressive strength over 1500 kg/cm2 to inconsistent water bearing sand. Finally, curves in the East-West line must have a minimum radius of 500 m which frequently forces the alignment to pass below existing structures, buildings and monuments.

The new Track Etch* technique for uranium exploration has been utilized in several survey programs conducted during the last few years. The results from these programs have been very encouraging, and new uranium ore bodies have been discovered by using this new technique. The Track Etch method is being used in several exploration programs in various locations around the world. The Track Etch exploration technique utilizes small pieces of special radiation-sensitive plastic film to detect the presence of radon gas which is released by uranium ore bodies. Because of the selectivity and sensitivity of the technique, ore bodies not normally detected with other surface or airborne monitoring methods are found. Since no large equipment or special training of personnel is needed, the Track Etch technique is easily used in field operations. The basis for the Track Etch method, its application in field exploration programs, and the results obtained to date in locating uranium ore bodies is discussed.

With the current emphasis on ecology, safety, and conservation of natural resources, some consideration should be given to methods of mining that reduce surface damage, make the mining of coal less hazardous, and allow exploitation of a larger percentage of the coal in situ. One method that can be helpful toward attaining these objectives is the use of packing or stowing. Stowing involves the replacement of the ore that has been removed by waste material obtained from within the mine or elsewhere. Evidently, it would be most beneficial if this waste for packing were available from the mine being worked, but generally this is not possible. If complete stowing is adopted, it is necessary to bring in packing material from other sources. Stowing tends to reduce surface subsidence, but not eliminate it. It enhances roof support and curtails accumulation of methane in the gob, making the mining operations safer. It may also allow one to obtain a larger amount of coal. Currently, in the United States, a substantial amount of coal is left in place as pillars, in the hope that it will support the overburden indefinitely. Some of these could be extracted with stowing. The mining of thick, steep, or contiguous seams would also be facilitated.

The potash mine and refinery of AMAX Chemical Corporation is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad on the north end of the potash producing areas. This property was developed between 1949-1952 and production of muriate began in August 1952. Two shafts, located 400 feet apart, were sunk to the ore zone 900 feet below the surface. A 15-foot diameter ore hoisting shaft equipped with a 1000-ton ore pocket, crusher and automatic skip loading equipment plus a 20-foot diameter service shaft with a curtain wall for exhausting air were provided. Sylvinite production to date has been from the first ore zone, stratigraphically, the lowest of ten identified mineralized zones in the salt section. This first ore zone has been the top producer of Muriate of Potash over the years. In our area we do have some very marginal mineralization in the third ore zone some 35 feet above the first. We have not mined from this seam as yet but we are investigating the economics very closely with access slopes and an experimental mining panel. Our ore seam is generally flat lying but does have local gentle rolling with grades from 2% to 5%. The mine was designed and developed from the beginning with conventional mining practices and rail haulage from the mining section to the ore pocket. As mining progressed in the early years, production increased from less than one million tons annually to a maximum of 3,935,000 tons in 1964. Efficiency also kept pace with the increasing production and continually improved until the efficiency of the production crews reached an average of 100.3 tons per manshift in 1964.

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.
