The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. In 1965 Hoogovens was looking for additional capacity for burden preparation in the order of 2,5 to 3 million metric tons per annum of some kind of optimal blast furnace ore feed. In principle four solutions offered them-selves for further investigation: 1. purchase of screened ore and/or run of mine ores with the provision of a corresponding ore screening capacity on the blast furnace site; 2. manufacture of sinter; 3. purchase of pellets; 4. manufacture of pellets. After studying the technological, technical, economical and commercial factors Hoogovens decided for the last mentioned possibility. Before taking this decision not only a great number of different mixtures of iron ore were tested, but during a long period in one of the big blast furnaces a number of tests were also executed with purchased pellets from South and North America. It was found, that using 50% acid pellets with 40% basic sinter a coke rate saving of 25 kg per ton hot metal (50 lbs/net THM) and a production gain of 15% could be obtained as compared with a full sinter practice. With some pellets it became clear, that due to properties, commonly referred to as swelling, we got very poor furnace performances; so in studying the production of pellets, pellet quality should be regarded as the most important aspect of the problem.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because of its unique properties and low cost. Strictly defined, kaolin is the name given to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which kaolinite is the most common mineral (1). Through common usage the mineral, kaolinite, is called "kaolin" or "china clay". In 1972 over 4, 000, 000 tons of kaolin will be beneficiated and shipped by domestic producers. By far the largest user of kaolin is the paper industry which utilizes approximately 65 to 70 per cent of the total production. Kaolin is used in paper as a filler in the interstices of the sheet and as a coating to impart smoothness, gloss, brightness, and printability to the paper. The rubber industry is also a large user of kaolin where it is used as a filler because it adds strength, abrasion resistance, and rigidity to both natural and synthetic rubber goods. Kaolin is used as an extender in paints because it is chemically inert, has a high covering power, gives desirable flow properties, and is low in cost. In ceramics, kaolin is used in whitewares, tile, insulators, refractories, and in some face brick where a white color is desired. Kaolin is also used extensively in plastics as a filler in thermosetting and thermoplastic mixes to give smoother surfaces, a more attractive finish, good dimensional stability, and resistance to chemical attack. Many other process industries use kaolin as a filler, suspending medium, or for color improvement.

With increased interest and urgency for coal mine safety and the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health 'and Safety Act, the Bureau's research effort in roof control has been greatly expanded. One new project, the subject of this paper, concerns improving conventional roof bolting and has been involved with the effects of different variables on the performance of roof bolt expansion anchors. These include types of expansion anchor, rock type at the anchorage horizon, borehole roughness, rate of torquing a roof bolt to set the anchor, installed tension, bolt length, and relative humidity fluctuations. For this work, two types of experiments were carried out. One was concerned with tension loss in bolt-anchor assemblies and simulated anchor performance in a static roof. The other dealt with anchor slippage as tension was increased and simulated anchor performance in an active roof. Trials were made in the laboratory under controlled conditions so that factors suspected of affecting expansion anchor performance could be selectively studied. Because of the natural variability in rock and the fact that most expansion anchor components are essentially rough castings or forgings, the experiments were designed to permit using analysis of variance techniques for analyzing data. Thus, in this paper, "significant" means statistically significant.

A. We are aware that many who are in the audience have perhaps heard before some of the material which will be presented. Since our firm is more closely associated with the heavy construction industry our experience is more oriented in that direction. Notwithstanding this, the subject your program committee has asked us to present centers mainly in the earth-moving field. We find a common denominator between say, the stripping of a site to uncover an ore-body which will be developed by open-pit methods, and that of excavating & transporting materials for an embankment dam, airport or other project. Both are earth-moving problems and we offer for your consideration a means of determining the most favorable method, equipment selection and resultant cost. We do considerable studies involving rock excavation for tunnels, underground powerhouses, inclined and vertical shafts for penstocks, muck-removal, electrical cable & other related underground work. Hence, we believe we speak the same language.

Strip mining has played a key role in the production of coal used to produce energy in this country. About 56 percent of the 1.3 x 106 hectares (3.2 x 106 acres) that had been disturbed by surface mining as of 1965 can be attributed to stripping (Udall, 1967). The runoff from these stripped areas is usually heavily polluted with high concentrations of total dissolved solids, iron, aluminum, manganese, sulfates, and has low pH values with high acidity. Another problem of a most serious nature in our large cities is the volume of treated solids to be disposed of after sewage treatment. Chicago is presently producing about 664 metric tons/day of dry weight solids (Horn and Earles, 1968). Disposal methods most commonly used include lagooning, incineration, and landfilling. The high cost of land in an urban community is prohibitive of lagoon storage. Incineration and landfill disposal create air and water pollution problems. Many countries including Australia, England and Israel have long realized the value of sewage solids if they are recycled back to the land. In the United States, the value of such solids in reclaiming strip mined land has been recognized by relatively few people. This paper is concerned with the use of anaerobically digested sludge to reclaim strip mined land.

In order to further elucidate the mechanisms involved in autogenous grinding, the fracture of rock specimens in free-fall impact was studied using the theory of elasticity. Stress distributions in rock specimens under various conditions of impact were analyzed and the conditions for failure were examined in relation to the compressive and tensile strength of rock. The energy equation derived for autogenous grinding coincides basically with Lewis' generalized formula or Oka and Majima's formula, and it is sufficiently general to incorporate all of the three older theories, viz; those of Rittinger, Bond and Kick.

A great deal of effort is being expended by mineral processing engineers to acquire a basic knowledge of modelling and optimization techniques. Stimuli such as immediate process improvement, expanded process understanding, optimal flowsheet design and re-design, and the development of new and better control systems are goals which excite the imagination in terms of increased profits. To reach these goals, process models and efficient optimization strategies, regardless of their purpose, assume an important role. Consequently, few of us can argue that such efforts are of no value. The purpose of this paper is to review empirical modelling methods and optimization strategies which appear to be of value to mineral engineers.

Sand and gravel has been, and will continue to be, our principal construction material. Most of us are familiar with the patterns of past growth. Today we will examine the present status of this vital industry. We shall also attempt to look into the future to see where it is going and to evaluate the constraints that are being imposed. Natural aggregates are among the lowest in value of all bulk industrial minerals. From the processing point of view, sand and gravel production is relatively simple since the products are sized materials obtained from a deposit of satisfactory physical soundness. They can be used either loose or bound to provide bulk, strength, or protection. One of the main uses of coarse aggregate is in concrete as a filling material. As a general rule, the coarse aggregate constitutes about three-quarters of the volume of concrete. The other main use for aggregate is as a roadstone or roadbase to provide protective and stabilizing bulk beneath the road surface. Also it is used in a mixture with petroleum products as the wearing course on top. The sand and gravel industry is geographically widespread. In general, the output of operations is directly proportional to the amount of construction in any area. A wide variety of other aggregates compete with sand and gravel, including crushed stone, blast-furnace slag, clinker, and artificial and natural lightweight materials.

Silicic volcanic ash and its alteration product, bentonite (montmorillonite and cristobalite), occur widely within sedimentary phosphate deposits. The genetic link, if any, between volcanism and phosphate deposition has yet to be satisfactorily established The phosphatic member of the Santa Margarita Formation (upper Miocene) in northwestern Ventura County, California, consists of approximately 15 per cent volcanic ash and bentonite. Ash and bentonite units greater than one foot thick can be subdivided into a lower zone of airfall origin and an upper zone of mixed ash and terrigenous detritus washed in from surrounding land areas. This upper zone also contains up to 20 percent phosphate pellets. These thick volcaniclastic units are typically overlain sharply by thin beds (less than 6 inches thick) of relatively pure, silica-cemented pelletal phosphorite. The shelf basin in which the phosphatic sediments accumulated was characterized by quiet, reducing but not euxenic bottom waters; Abundant decaying organic debris, mainly diatoms, served as a reservoir of readily available phosphate. The sudden influx of a large volume of silicic volcanic ash into this basin and its subsequent alteration to montmorillonite had two profound effects on thechemistry of the interstitial and bottom waters: (1) during alteration magnesium was removed from these waters and incorporated into the montmorillonite lattice, and (2) the pH of these waters increased as alteration progressed Both of these effects led to the crystallization in the bottom waters of carbonate fluorapatite. This accumulated as thin phosphorite beds immediately above the volcaniclastic units.

The process parameters for effective utilization of nitric acid as an oxidant for copper-iron sulfides have been developed. Leaching variables found to be important were acid concentration, temperature, time, atmosphere, pressure, mineral type, particle size, and percent solids. Particular attention was devoted to analysis and control of fumes evolved during the oxidation. Responses recorded were metal extraction, elemental sulfur formation and oxidation, product gas composition and evolution rate, reagent consumption, and residue flotation response. The paper concludes by laboratory testing a flow sheet based on the above observations. Ninety-eight percent of the copper contained in a chalcopyrite-bornite concentrate was recovered, requiring 1. 6 pounds of nitric acid to be regenerated externally per pound of copper extracted. Iron remained in the leach residue as hydrogen jarosite and was ultimately rejected from the system by froth flotation. Sixty percent of the sulfur contained, in the heading concentrate reported in the elemental form; the remainder was oxidized to sulfate and eliminated with the hydrogen jarosite in the flotation tails or by neutralization of the solvent extraction raffinate with lime. Nitrogen was evolved primarily as NO and NO2; up to 3 percent N2O was also present. Gases containing sulfur were absent except when pyrrhotite was solubilized in the absence of soluble copper. In this case, H2S was evolved.

The fluidized bed is an effective method for investigating retorting phenomena and possibly a commercial means of retorting oil shale. Both were examined by Sinclair Oil Corp. (now part of Atlantic Richfield Co.) in the period 1.965 to 1968. The results of the work show that presence of an oxidizing environment during retorting results in loss of oil yield which indicates that vapor phase oil burns in preference to combustion of coke on spent shale. This has implications for several types of retorts. Correlation of the results of this work with that of other investigators shows that the partial pressure of retorting products in contact with oil shale during retorting has an effect on yield. Consideration of hardware indicates that there are several possibilities for commercial embodiment. As a companion to shaft-type retorts the fluidized bed could have good potential. Realistic assessment of costs suggests that further development may have to await commercialization of another process. The existence of a plant in which to test prototype size would markedly reduce such development costs. Results Preliminary development work with the apparatus was carried out using a fluidized bed of sand, as explained later, with the entire system brought up to temperature and flows stabilized. The shale was injected rapidly in a slug (batch) which had small mass compared to that of the high temperature system to make the reaction approach isothermality with reasonable approximation of instantaneous preheating. Typically, the temperature in the center of the bed dropped from 900°F to 600°F one minute after batch addition. It returned to 750' within three minutes and 900° within seven minutes. Obviously, the bed was quenched but it recovered rapidly. Average bed temperatures of 700' to 1020°F were examined to compare the effect of temperature with published results. Yields In the 700°F range were only 10 to 15%, of Fischer Assay (FA). Above about 950'F, oil yields decreased and gas yields increased. Nitrogen was used first as the fluidizing gas to provide a chemically inert medium. Incept for an insignificant dip at 895"F, Figure 1, oil yield was not affected by retorting temperature in the 800° to 900' range as long as residence time was adequate (16 minutes). At 925°F, the oil yield was some 103% FA. With further increase in temperature, the yield decreased to 86% FA at 1015°F. There is no increase in carbon on spent shale, the lost oil goes to Increased gas make.

Over the past four years, the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University has presented a number of papers on operations research in the coal industry before various AIME meetings and meetings of other societies. These papers have been followed up by further presentations in the technical press. The emphasis of all of these papers has been to demonstrate applications of operations research to the solution of numerous types of coal industry problems. In each case, effort has been made to demonstrate that operations research does not require extensive knowledge of computer science or use of sophisticated higher mathematics. In fact, for most applications, satisfactory results can be obtained by a single individual in a minimum of time with no aids other than a pencil and paper and a knowledge of basic arithmetic. The most recent efforts by the Coal Research Bureau have been directed toward the continuing industry problem of optimizing the location of mining facilities. Preliminary work in this area was presented before the Central Appalachian Section of AIME and subsequently published in the May, 1972, issue of Coal Age. This initial presentation illustrated techniques for determining optimum locations of facilities based upon material transport effort under the assumption of constant cost per ton mile of haulage effort. The present paper will expand upon this earlier work and introduce economic factors. In the design of a mine or mining system, careful consideration must be given to the sites selected for each element of the system. Optimum placement of facilities is vital to minimize capital and operating cost. Thus, barring unfavorable geological conditions or other exceptional factors, facilities should be located at those points which represent the minimum cumulative cost over the life of the property. Most cost factors are independent, or essentially independent of the location of fixed facilities. Thus, for example, regardless of the location of the shaft, the direct cost to mine any given ton of coal is essentially constant. The major 1

On July 7, 1971, noise regulations for underground coal mines were implemented under provisions set forth in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These same regulations now also apply to coal mine surface facilities. In August 1971, in anticipation of these regulations, the Bureau of Mines, through the cooperation of the mine operators, conducted extensive noise surveys in three coal cleaning plants. The survey was conducted in an attempt to identify those occupations where exposures would exceed the proposed regulations.

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. There is pressing need for better means of exploring ground conditions ahead of mining. Exploration drilling has the drawbacks of high cost and a seriously restricted sampling zone. Traditional geophysical exploration methods including gravity, magnetic and resistivity techniques have been used with some success underground, but all give poor target delineation relative to range, since they depend upon minor distortions of a potential force field. Much greater ratios of resolution to range can, in principle, be obtained by employing electromagnetic or seismic radiation as the exploring agent. This is because propagation time delays can be used to measure range accurately, and to separate the small effect of a distant target from the much larger effects of nearer targets and of the transmitter. Seismic waves have long been used with great success in exploration for petroleum, and recent research on their application underground is promising. Electromagnetic (radar) waves have been very successfully used for detection and location through the air and outer space, and have also explored through polar icecaps more than a mile thick.l It is not generally realized that below the soil many rocks are also somewhat radar-transparent, and that radar can be used for exploring such rocks, once a quarry, a mine, a borehole, or other means of access has been opened. Radar waves are reflected by any boundary or object where they encounter a large change in electrical properties.2 The usual cause of such a change is a difference in moisture content. A core from the La Camelia attapulgite mine in north Florida was studied in detail to determine the detailed vertical variability and the relations of the various parameters. The structural, textural, mineralogical and chemical data indicate there are two major depositional cycles represented within the minable interval. The sediments deposited during the two cycle differ in detail but in general are similar. The environments of deposition grade from shallow marine to lagoonal to tidal flat to marsh. The sedimentary structure (lamination, burrows, pebble conglomerate), mineralogy (attapulgite, montmorillonite, sepiolite, dolomite, calcite) chemistry (Al, Mg, Fe) are closely related to each other and their nature is determined by the depositional environments. Most of the clay minerals and carbonate minerals are authigenic and are therefore particularly sensitive to environmental differences. The variability and environmental features seen in this core are characteristic of the sediments in the general attapulgite mining area. A detailed understanding of the relationships discussed should be of value in prospecting, mining and processing.

Sylvite of Canada, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., operates an 8000 TPD potash mine and refinery located nine miles North East of Rocanville, Saskatchewan. Prior to Hudson Bay's entry in 1968 into potash mining and refining, it was one of the more traditional and conservative Canadian Mining Companies whose principal business had been for many years a successful copper-zinc mining and smelting operation located at Flin Flon, Manitoba. The potash reserves being mined by Sylvite were acquired through the acquisition of Francana Oil and Gas. This acquisition was at the time when several major potash mines were being developed or had recently been brought into production in the Province. These mines are owned by either very substantial Canadian Mining Companies or Multi-National Mining Companies with considerable potash mining experience. At that time, it became very apparent because of the new mines coming into production, potash mining and refining would quickly become a very competitive industry. Because of long term considerations, Hudson Bay decided to proceed with the development of its potash reserves, recognizing the Mine and Refinery would have to be the most advanced available in order to successfully operate. This report deals with the mining operation at Sylvite and the degree of success Sylvite has achieved.

The paper by Lewis and Braun l presents experimental and calculational evidence that primary chalcopyrite ores are rapidly oxidized by warm oxygen-bearing water. Resulting solutions contained copper sulfate products of the matrix rock decomposition such as magnesium sulfate and sulphuric acid. Iron was oxidized to insoluble hematite and hydrous iron sulfates. Oxygen injection near the base of a broken and permeable flooded ore deposit was calculated to cause circulation of oxidizing solutions to the entire permeable region. The rate of dissolution of copper and degree of oxygen saturation for given oxygen injection rates were presented. Their work suggests that in-situ recovery of deep, disseminate primary copper deposits is technically feasible. The actual feasibility depends on economics and environmental safety as well, and it is the purpose of this paper to address these two aspects.

Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance when new mining enterprises are considered. The reasons for this increased emphasis is the much greater depths at which many new ore-bodies are being developed and the rapid depletion of near surface reserves requiring mines to go to greater depths on existing deposits. These greater depths increase the probability of exposure to unfavorable geologic conditions and it is more likely that high ground and/or water pressures will be experienced at these depths. The large capital costs involved and the critical position of a shaft in the overall mining program necessitate that this element of project development be given careful and critical consideration. The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is located in the Rocky Mountains of north central Colorado (See Figure I), about 55 miles west of Denver, near the community of Empire in Clear Creek County. At the 10, 442 foot collar elevation, winter arrives in late September and brings snow to contend with until May. The labor force for Shaft No. 2 is approximately 90 men. They are provided access to the project via all-weather U. S. Highway 40. SHAFT DESIGN The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is a 28-foot I. D. circular, concrete lined (1 foot thick) vertical shaft. The final depth will be approximately 3100 feet
