The title of this talk has brought some interesting responses - even before it was written - from different parts of the country. A geologist from the Western U. S, was deeply concerned with recent layoffs in his profession and the employment situation in general and wondered why "the AIME wasn't doing anything for the benefit of its members." A petroleum engineer in Texas said that a group in his field were studying "professionalism" and their professional status and wondered if there were any words of wisdom for him. A mining engineering professor from the East pointed out that the National Science Foundation did not include mining engineering as one of its recognized fields in one of its equipment funding programs. These are just a few examples of reactions received to date, but they serve to illustrate the broad image that the title has meant to various people. Actually the term profession is defined by Webster as "a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation." The word encroach means "to enter by gradual steps or by stealth into the possessions or rights of another", or "to advance beyond desirable or normal limits." The intention of this paper, as originally conceived and requested by the program chairman, was to combine those two words literally and talk about how the professional standing of mineral engineers is being eroded from people outside the profession. But the amazing preliminary response suggests that it may be timely to broaden the discussion by including some comments about professionalism in general. In the paper the terms "mineral engineer" or "mining engineering" are used frequently, but it should be clearly understood that much of what is said is valid and is intended for all fields covered by SME and perhaps for AIME in general.

Location The Meggen Mine and the concentrator plant of the "Sachtleben Bergbau G.m.b.H." are located in the southern part of the Ruhr-district of the Federal Republic of Germany. The mine has been in operation for more than 100 years, but the concentrator described in this paper was built in 1962 and started up in January 1963. Goelogy and Mining The Meggen ore-body is of sedimentary origin and occurs in a zone of limestones, graywacke and shales of Devonion age. The average thickness of the deposit is 3 meters and, due to an intense folding of the area, the mineralized zone dips very steeply at 800 toward the north. The ore consists of 85 percent of sulfides and 15 percent gangue that mainly contains silicates from the host rocks. The principal ore minerals are pyrite (67 percent), sphalerite (16 percent) and galena (2 percent) with minor amounts of marcasite and only traces of chalcopyrite. As shown in Fig. 1, the sphalerite and galena are very finely disseminated in the massive pyrite of the Meggen ore, and a very fine grinding combined with a special flotation technique are required to liberate the valuable sulfides and to produce separate concentrates of lead, zinc and pyrite. Mining is performed by the sub-level stoping method and employs trackless equipment. Present operations provide ore from the 600 meter level. Annual ore production is 870,000 metric tons.

During the last 10 years there have been many new developments in transport and handling equipment. Important technical and economic developments that can be used to reduce costs are; new terminal and materials handling concepts large river tows - 40,000 tons and 9000 hp towboats slurry loading and unloading of ocean vessels long distance pipelining of solids development of the shuttle train (unit train) large ocean barges ? 25,000+ tons ? pushed & towed 150,000 ton self-unloading super tankers - 300,000+ tons container shipping Some of these developments have been discussed at SME meetings in papers describing the transportation of minerals from new mines. But, only a few papers described improved transportation from older operations. Since transportation is a major part of the delivered cost for minerals, the economic benefits to be gained by putting new transportation developments to work are very substantial. Frequently good transportation planning and management makes the difference between a marginal ore body and a very profitable one.

The Broken Hill proprietary company Limited grate kiln pellet plant (1) located at Whyalla in South Australia commenced production on May 13, 1968. During commissioning, about 25,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced. Plant performance was satisfactory and acceptable under the plant guarantee. For production reasons, it was necessary to curtail the fluxed pellet run and revert to the production of acid pellets. In 1970, some 250,000 long tons of fluxed pellets were produced under varying operating conditions to determine the requirements for optimum quality pellets at acceptable production rates. In excess of 180,000 long tons of these fluxed pellets were exported to Japan. Problems experienced in production of the fluxed pellets are detailed, and the quality of the fluxed pellets compared to that of normal acid pellets produced at Whyalla. Brief Plant Details Run of mine ore treated was predominantly soft and friable and contained an average of 66 per cent Fe, 1.7 per cent Si02 and 1.8 per cent Al203. The main iron mineral in the ore was hematite with some martite also present. Plant feed was ground dry in ball mills 11 ft in diameter by 29 ft long to a Blaine surface area of 1600 sq.cm/g and the ground ore was wetted in a pug mill. Balling was carried out in balling drums 10 ft in diameter by 32 ft long. Induration equipment included an eighteen windbox grate 12 ft 2 in. wide by 164 ft 1 in. long, a rotary kiln 18 ft 6 in. diameter by 118 ft 8 in. long and an annular cooler 50 ft mean diameter by 7 it wide.

According to Arbiter (Reference 1), the ball mill was invented by Brückner in Germany in 1876 and was first used in the United States on ores about 1905. The basic concept was a simple rotating cylindrical drum in which the tumbling action of the charge of material and grinding media resulted in size reduction of the material. Despite the very low mechanical efficiency of this method a number of factors have caused the tumbling mill to remain, by far, the most widely used piece of equipment for mineral grinding. The principal factors influencing this situation have been simplicity of design, ease of manufacture, ready adaptability to familiar material handling layouts and the absence of practical alternatives acceptable to the industry. In the early mills, the material was ground in batches, the mills being charged and discharged through doors in the shell. The shell was supported by means of solid trunnion shafts resting in plain bearings and the drive was accomplished through one of these shafts. In some later batch mills, the mill shell was supported on rollers which were also used to drive the mill. At an early stage, continuous operation was made possible by feeding and discharging the mill through hollow trunnions, the method still in most widespread use. The mechanical and structural design of the early mills was not an onerous engineering task. Norse sense and good practical knowledge were key qualifications. The mill shells had to be heavy enough to withstand the physical abuse they would receive in the field and the bearings had to have low enough unit pressures and sufficient wear retol to ensure several months of operation before the need for replacement occurred. When these requirements were satisfied, stresses developed in the equipment during operation were insignificant and the majority of structural failures were probably due to the use of inferior materials in manufacture. Over the years, the ever present demand for increased productivity has resulted in a steady Increase in the size of units of production equipment, including grinding mills. Meramec Mining Company, a joint venture by Bethlehem Steel Corporation and St. Joe Minerals Corporation, is engaged in the mining, concentrating, and pelletizing of iron ore from the Pea Ridge Mine located near Sullivan, Missouri, about 70 miles southwest of St. Louis. The orebody was delineated in the mid-1950's by St. Joe during an exploration program to discover new lead orebodies. An airborne magnetometer survey which was run by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Missouri Geological Survey, and several min¬ing companies was published in 1950 and showed an anomaly in the Pea Ridge area. Test holes drilled in 1953 and 1954 revealed the presence of a large orebody of probable commercial significance; additional drilling in 1956 and 1957 provided confirmation of this. Meramec Mining Company was incorporated in 1957 and shaft sinking began in the latter part of that year. The Pea Ridge orebody lies under about 1300 feet of sediments. It is tabular, about 2600 feet long and up to 600 feet thick, and lies in an approximate east-west delineation. The orebody dips about 800S and is of unknown depth. The ore is primarily high grade magnetite with smaller zones of specular hematite, The Pre-cambrian wall rock is rhyolite porphyry. Abstract: Action of certain strains of bacteria has been implicated as a significant factor in the oxidation of ore deposits. Other bacteria are thought to be significant in the formation of syngenetic sedimentary ores and in supergene enrichment processes. A normal soil/ground-water regime provides all of the necessary pH and Eh conditions for several groups of bacteria which influence the sulfur cycle in nature. Limiting concentrations of nutrients such as sulfate ions can determine whether a particular microbial species is active at a given place. In the present study, ground water was analyzed from a mineralized area and from a presumed barren area. Trace metal content of the ground water gave no well defined clue as to the presence of a sulfide ore deposit. Sulfide producing bacteria (presumably sulfate users) were found in water from about 50% of wells sampled in the mineralized area and in about 30% of samples from the barren area. These bacteria are readily detected and may provide a useful tool for regional geochemical recon-naissance. Bacterially produced sulfide ions can remove metals such as copper and zinc from solution thus complicating the interpretation of hydrogeochemical prospecting.

One of the major improvements in ore grinding economics in North America has been the introduction of autogenous grinding. The history of this has been well documented in previous AIME presentations and in the literature. Pickands Mather & Co. has been very active in the development of autogenous grinding since 1957. This early work led to the application of autogenous grinding to the Wabush Mines ore in 1965, with the installation of 6-24 ft. diameter by 8 ft. long - 1,750 HP mills. Development work recently completed in 1971 on another ore has led to the decision to install 5-36 ft. diameter by 15 ft. long - 12,000 HP mills when this project goes ahead. Between these two decisions lies a tremendous amount of research, development, and application of autogenous grinding to a variety of ores. The Pickands Mather Metallurgical and Research Laboratory in Hibbing, Minnesota has tested, in its pilot plant facility, ores from 9 different deposits. Some of these deposits have as much difference within their own ore types as there is between the various deposits. Therefore, it is safe to say that over 20 different ore types have been tested and flowsheets developed for commercial applications. Of the 9 projects, 3 are in operation. These are Wabush Mines in Labrador, Canada, (1) Savage River Mines in Tasmania, (2) and The Griffith Mine in Red Lake, Ontario, Canada. (3) Pilot plant work has encompassed over 300 individual tests. These tests were carried out in mills that were 5-1/2, 8, and 12 ft. in diameter. Grinding power requirements for the primary autogenous milling has varied from 2 to 30 KWH/Lt of crude ore.

When one's attention moves from the control of a process unit or from the control of a department of similar units, to the control of an entire plant, two things must change. One is the techniques of control, and the other, the goal or purpose of control. The goal is no longer maintaining a certain quality of product or maintaining a particular flow rate through a process unit. The goal becomes economic - how to make the most money out of the plant. The principal control techniques become those of optimizing, rather than regulating. It is quite common to discuss the control of an entire plant in terms of three levels of control l; regulation, supervision, and optimization. Regulation is the control of inputs to a process unit at desired values. This is accomplished by two or three mode analog controllers or DDC loops. The second level of control is the selection of these desired values, e.g., set-points of the regulation controllers. The third level is to make such adjustments or corrections to the supervisory calculations so as to optimize the plant profit. It is immediately evident that supervisory control and optimizing control are intimately related, and a distinct dividing line cannot always be drawn between the two. Some authors prefer to add even more levels such as adaptive control and management information systems, but we believe our point is well made without further division of the functions which are necessary for complete plant control. To accomplish the economic goal, that is, the optimizing (maximizing) of the profit of a mineral processing plant, the plant should ideally be operated as if it were a separate company, buying its raw materials on the open market and selling its products on the open market. While petrochemical plants endeavor to operate in that manner, unfortunately this is not true of a mineral processing plant. The plant manager has to accept the amount and quality of ore the mining department delivers to him, and the products (concentrates) are delivered to another department of the company for further refining. Humid tropical environments pose many problems for mineral exploration. The problems result from thick lateritic soils, dense vegetation, seasonally heavy rains, deep chemical weathering, few outcrops and thick saprolites. Although geochemical exploration should be potentially a useful technique in these environments, it appears from the scarcity of reports in the literature that insufficient attention has been paid to developing procedures that are specific to the needs of humid tropical areas. For this reason, the authors believe that this account of a geochemical study in a tropical coastal area on the edge of the Brazilian shield is of general interest and importance for potential geochemical exploration surveys in similar areas within the tropics. The objective of the geochemical study was to develop a practical technique of reconnaissance geochemical prospecting for copper deposits in Brazilian tropical coastal lowland areas. In order to achieve this objective, information concerning the secondary dispersion of copper in these areas was required. Consequently, an orientation survey was designed to provide this information. The present account contains details of the geochemical study and the information about the secondary dispersion of copper that was acquired during the course of the orientation survey. Location and Climate The field area is on the Atlantic coastal lowland of Brazil at latitude 13°S. It lies approximately 10 kilometers south of Maragojipe, a city of 15,000 inhabitants; this city is on the western side of the Bay de Todos os Santos about 45 airline kilo¬meters northwest of Salvador. (See Fig. 1) A good gravel road from Sao Felipe to Sao Roque do Paraguay crosses the southern part of the field area. The climate of the area is hot and moist, and is without prolonged dry periods. This paper will discuss bentonite deposits in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The discussion will be re¬stricted to a review of the so-called calcium or non-swelling bentonites. In other words the exchangeable cation is calcium. The term "bentonite" is used to describe a clay material, composed essentially of the clay mineral montmorillonite. In addition, bentonites may contain various impurities such as glass shards, feldspar, quartz, muscovite and biotite mica, glauconite, pyrite, hydrated iron oxide, gypsum, organic material, etc, Most of the southern calcium bentonites contain at least 70% montmorillonite, Bentonite as mined may range in color from dark grayish greens through various shades of grays, reds, yellows and browns to nearly white. It is normally massive and breaks with a conchoidal fracture. When air dried, closely spaced shrinkage fractures occur. Moist bentonite has a soapy feel, with little or no obvious "grit". Bentonite deposits were first discovered in Mississippi about 1925, in southern Monroe County. During the thirties and early 1940's, deposits were identified in Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Perhaps the earliest production of southern bentonite was from a deposit in the valley of the Tombigdee River, south of Jackson, Alabama in 1936. As the program says -we'll he talking about the expectations of the Management of an Industrial Mineral enterprise relative to the activities of geologists engaged in that enterprise. Industrial Minerals is such a large industry both in tons produced and in value of product -and of such diversity and complexity of participating enterprises, minerals and products that I doubt if anyone person can speak for the entire industry as to the expectations of management with respect to the geologist. I'm sure there are major differences in emphasis between segments of management as to the relative importance of the different aspects of the geologists' role in the scheme of things. However, we will try to generalize concerning what we consider to be important factors and to be more specific perhaps of some of the factors with which we have had direct assessable experience.

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. Utilization of x-ray diffraction data for mineral identification has been well documented and accepted as an analytical tool in industrial and research organizations. However, the search for new methods to minimize errors affecting measured reflection intensities is being carried out by all concerned. Recent application of computer capability has greatly reduced the time required in handling data for mineral analysis and has increased the capability of accepting more data for greater precision. The purpose of this communication is (1) to describe the concept of cross-power in XRD analysis, and (2) to show that direct comparison analysis for multiphase systems has improved analytical accuracy when all available x-ray diffraction data are used in conjunction with high speed data processing by computer.

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

In every business today costs come under almost microscopic scrutiny. It's hard to conceive that less than 30 years ago there was no such cost consciousness apparent in overall industry. Railroads, through their almost absolute monopoly on freight handling, were one of the industries where little thought was given to overall costs. True regulation kept rates in line, but railroads did very little in the area of supplying equipment intended to help the shipper minimize his costs and at the same time result in savings to the rail carrier. During this period, except for isolated cases, railroads placed standard cars for loading. Most railroad car fleets consisted of box cars, hopper cars, flat cars and low side gondola cars certain roads having unique movements developed special cars to accommodate the particular product, but seldom did these cars move in general interchange service. Most of you are aware that several large companies built railroads of their own as an integral part of raw materials handling from remote sources to production plants located near concentrations of usage. On these railroads special cars were built with little thought to inter-change service. Examples of such railroads are the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern, the Union Railroad, the Bessemer and Lake Erie and the Birmingham Southern.

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. The writer presents this material as a resource engineer advising a major bank in mineral matters, so the presentation may relate more to the financial problems of the developer

A recent attempt by a major mining company to mine phosphate in Chatham County, Georgia, resulted in a study by the Georgia Department of Mines, Mining and Geology which was intended to evaluate the deposit as well as potential hazards to the major fresh-water aquifer of the area. The study found that the confining layer above the fresh-water artesian aquifer is sufficiently thick and impermeable to allow removal of the phosphate ore zone without significant salt water infiltration into the aquifer. Therefore, phosphate mining under proper supervision will not adversely affect the quality of water used by the city of Savannah nearby. Volumetric studies show that there is a minimum of 4,800,000,000 cubic yards of phosphate matrix containing an average of 22.5% BPL. At an approximate weight of 1.5 tons per cubic yard and a concentration of 22.5% BPL, there are about 1.6 billion tons of 100% BPL concentrate present. At a conservative factor of 50% at least 800,000,000 tons of 100% BPL concentrate could be recovered for market sale. In addition to the area discussed, evidence indicates that the phosphate horizon-may extend continuously out to sea for at least ten miles, and probably beyond.

The centre of the mining operations of the International Nickel Company, Ontario Division is Sudbury, a city of 160,000 population located 240 miles northwest of Toronto (Fig. 1). Within thirty miles of this city and located around the rim of the geological formation known as the Sudbury Basin are the ten underground mines and one open pit operated by the Company (Fig. 2). There are also four developing mines, three in the Sudbury area and one at Shebandowan, near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario and approximately 150 miles north east of Duluth, Minnesota. In 1971 the mines produced 22,800,000 tons, 20,600,000 tons from underground and the balance from open pits. Also located in the Sudbury District are facilities to extract and refine the metals contained in the ore. There is a nickel refinery located at Port Colborne on Lake Erie. An additional nickel refinery is under construction near Sudbury. Fifteen elements are recovered from the Sudbury ores, nickel, copper, iron, sulphur, gold, silver, cobalt, tellurium and the six platinum group metals, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium.
