General Statement In Montana, as in most states, the requirements for water quality control are becoming more restrictive. What was once accepted practice is now obsolete. The planning and construction of water quality control facilities has taken on new importance. Past practices and new ideas must be examined to meet the challenge. By this paper we hope to encourage the exchange of ideas for the improvement of water quality control techniques. Both the mining industry and governmental agencies should benefit from such an exchange. The following is a summary of the work done and in progress by The Anaconda Company in Butte to provide an improved water quality related to production processes. We invite your comments. Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

Several years ago I wrote a comprehensive paper 'entitled, "Future Trend of Bulk Carriers" dealing with the principle dimensions of vessels and how they can be predicted; then with loading and unloading of large carriers, especially considering various designs of "Self Unloaders". Since writing the paper, many large bulk carriers were basically built along the, predictions made. Maximum size today is in the 150,000 DWT class, with few exceptions, which are combination carriers (ore-oil) or OBO's (oil-bulk-ore) in the 200-250,000 DWT class in the same paper, many references were made cautioning engineers not to design ports which could be "obsolete tomorrow", however, these were not always followed. Nevertheless, during the past few years many modern ports were built signaling the beginning of a new area of "Super Ports". Super Ports can be built for various reasons, most important to provide transfer stations where bulk material is received from large carriers then transferred to smaller vessels or barges for distribution. Obviously, opposite movement of bulk commodities can justify the building of "Super Ports", however, these are not as difficult to build for many reasons. The Material Handling Industry has developed efficient means of unloading smaller vessels or barges with continuous-type unloaders and has mastered the art of storing, reclaiming, and moving large quantities of bulk material to high-capacity shiploaders. Nevertheless, the industry has failed to design and market efficient ship unloaders which in any way could match the presently attainable shiploading rates. For these reasons, it is considerably more difficult to build "Super Ports" for incoming rather than outgoing bulk materials with large bulk carriers. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on problems affecting high-capacity, continuous ship unloaders, especially involving large bulk carriers. For better understanding, some references will be made to the smaller, continuous barge or ship unloaders, but only as the principles affect the larger units. Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2

The high temperature lubricant molybdenite, MoS2, is usually produced by a complex sequence of processes involving mineral dressing of molybdenite concentrates followed by leaching with hydrofluoric acid to remove abrasive impurities such as silica (1). Many attempts have been made, mostly by techniques involving, direct fusion of molybdenum compounds with sulphur, to produce synthetic molybdenite. However, apart from some experiments of geochemical interest (2) in which aqueous solutions of sodium sulphomolybdate, Nat MoS4, were decomposed under pressure at temperatures between 300°C and 700°C, no attempts to produce the mineral by hydrometallurgical procedures have been reported. Since molybdenite is nominally a compound of tetravalent molybdenum with sulphur, and the most common state of molybdenum is +6, production of molybdenite is likely to involve reduction and sulphidization. The present study, therefore, describes the reduction, with hydrogen and carbon monoxide, of molybdenum in the hexavalent state in alkaline aqueous solutions containing sulphide ion. In these

Fine-sized mineral wastes discarded by ore milling plants require stabilization to prevent air and water pollution. Methods devised for achieving this stabilization include physical, chemical vegetative, and combination procedures. Although vegetative reclamation is preferred to physical and chemical stabilization, it is difficult to achieve because the wastes are sterile, contain deleterious inorganic salts, and lack the essential nutrients and physical characteristics required for sustaining vegetative growth. Nevertheless, recent research has developed methods for producing vegetative growth on all but excessively acidic, basic, or saline tailings at costs ranging from $100 to $650 per acre. This report summarizes effective procedures developed for vegetating average tailings, the cost differential between the various methods, and suggests procedures that may be applicable for achieving stabilization of pyrite-containing wastes that may oxidize and become excessively acidic. The use of buried layers of sewage sludge to prevent this acidification is discussed.

These encompass all adverse effects of oil shale mining, processing, and ancillary developments on the environment. Specific problems concern: land, vegetation, wildlife, water, air, population growth, aesthetics and public emotion; and fall into four categories of: land, water, air and emotion. Land includes excavations, spent shale disposal, loss of vegetation and impact on wildlife and domestic grazing, plant sites, buildings and roads, necessary urbanization and the total aesthetic or visual Impact. Water considerations are: requirements for Industrial and domestic supplies, adverse effect of underground water on mining, avoidance of pollution or adverse effect on surface or near-surface water, and the utilization or safe disposal of liquids. Air problems include dust, smoke and stack gas, Public emotional problems include reaction to the above problems, and misconceptions of oil shale country and an oil shale Industry. Government and industry are aware of the problems, and are seeking solutions. Last year, the three affected states studied oil shale environmental problems and solution costs. Colorado estimated environmental costs would add approximately 7% to construction and 7% to operation. The report suggested research in: (1) Water availability and impact; (2) Disturbed lands revegetation and rehabilitation, including spent shale; (3) Environmental inventory and impact; and (4) Regional development and land use planning. Governor Love appointed a 47-person committee representing Industry, government and environmentalists to attack the problems. Research pro-posals were prepared to focus on each problem. $715,000 state, federal and industry money is being committed. Results should provide data for industrial solutions and equitable agency administration.

Almost all persons connected with mining industry have had an exasperating experience like the following: 'On a cold and frosty morning in mid-January, you find yourself quite happy with the world. Production is up and the mine has been running smoothly. All at once the radio cracks up your tranquility -- 'so and so' piece of equip¬ment has broken its 'whatzit'. Now the iron is in the fire, and things have to be fixed quick.!' This can be a major failure which will bring the whole operation to a grinding halt or just one of the numerous maintenance headaches on an auxiliary piece of equipment. After one has experienced a major or minor catastrophe, he has to wonder whether some other methods with respect to design and maintenance would help prevent these unexpected calamities. The objective of this paper is to gain an insight into the charac¬teristics of steel at cold temperatures so that better decisions can be made with respect to maintenance and repair of mining equipment. Most machinery and their structures are exposed to cold temperatures. Even in locations as far south as Alabama and Arizona, brief periods of cold in winter months can adversely affect the ability of mach¬ines to do their work. To understand the background of cold temperature brittle fracture, jet us examine its basic elements. First, when steel gets cold, it gets brittle. This is best described by Figure 1. While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. Due to falling metal prices and depletion of ore reserves, lead-zinc mining in the Leadville, Colorado, area gradually came to a halt in the 1950's. Exploration work continued, however, and by 1969 sufficient ore had been blocked out to warrant sinking a shaft and erecting a new concentrator to treat 700 tpd. The new shaft and concentrator were to be located in Iowa Gulch several miles east of Leadville at an elevation of 11,100 ft. The Leadville project is a joint venture between Newmont Mining Company and ASARCO with ASARCO being the operator. Design work began in the fall of 1969. Engineering was done by Torkelson Engineering Company of Salt Lake City in conjunction with the Central Engineering Department of ASARCO. The plant was constructed by Stearns-Roger Corporation. Construction began in the spring of 1970 and the plant went onstream in April, 1971. Flow sheets and equipment lists are attached. This paper will describe the flow sheet very briefly and discuss in more detail those aspects of the design which may be of interest, particularly the provisions for expanding the capacity of the plant.

The development drilling program of the Copper Cities mine indicated that the molybdenum content of the ore would be about 0.011% MoS2' The molybdenum content of the Miami mine at the same time was about 0.025% MOS2' The Miami mill had a very successful molybdenum operation which used bleeder turbine steam from the Miami power plant for the steaming operation. The much lower grade of the Copper Cities ore, the absence of a source of low cost steam and the use of sodium aerofloat as the copper collector which Miami experience indicated did not respono readily to the steaming technique made very doubtful the success of a similar operation at Copper Cities. However, the relatively few pounds of copper that could be recovered from the low grade Copper Cities heads made very desirable the recovery of the molybdenwa,as a source of additional revenue. Accordingly, shortly after the Copper Cities mill began operation, a research program was instituted to develop a suitable method of molybdenum recovery. This program explored first, the successful steaming process then in use at Miami and as expected, found it unable to decompose the sodium aerofloat copper collector. The known chemical depressants were then tried without much encouragement. Finally the copper concentrate was dried, not roasted, to 2-3% mOisture and this along with sodium ferro-cyanide and cyanide resulted in sufficient copper depression that a final molybdenum concentrate containing 1.0% CU could be made. It is easy for a coal spokesman to relate to the theme of this meeting--that the decade of the 1970's is pivotal for the mineral industries. For the coal operator, this period is crucial. The coal industry, according to most energy forecasters, must gear its production machinery to meet a sharp rise in the demand for coal--in this decade to sustain inevitable boosts in electricity output, and in the next to start supporting a big new domestic synthetic fuels industry that is already in the formative stage. The logic of that projection flows from a combination of hard circumstances--proved reserves of domestic fluid fuels are dwindling, the hope for bountiful and cheap nuclear power must be indefinitely deferred, and the threat of long-term fuel imports to the national interests is becoming starkly visible. Only coal, with its assets of abundance, security and versatility, offers the nation an adequate and immediate lift out of its current energy crisis. A hard-won expansion of coal production made the critical difference between local power load-shedding and major area blackouts in 1970, the year the energy crisis went public. Coal will have to play that same key role, not just through this pivotal decade but through the turn of the century. But the logic of fuel demand apparently does not always extend to supply. The coal industry has had a huge production job laid out for it by the energy statisticians, but up to now the energy policy-makers have not followed through with the aids and inducements that the coal operator urgently needs to do that job well and completely.

Fuller's earth and bentonite are two clay commodities that are interrelated either by mineral composition or use. Because of this interrelation and the sale of both for many different uses, some ambiguity in their classification has resulted. The term "fuller's earth" has no compositional or mineralogical meaning, and it is used more or less as a catchall for any clay or earthy material suitable for certain uses. Most, but not all, of these uses require absorbent properties. Bentonite by geologic definition must have formed from volcanic ash or tuff or the glassy material in volcanic rock; most bentonites consist chiefly of montmorillonite but other clay minerals may be present. In industrial usage the term "bentonite" is applied to any clay consisting chiefly of montmorillonite, irrespective of origin. Georgia and Florida have historically been the leading States in the production of fuller's earth; bentonite has been produced in Alabama on a small scale. The first major use of fuller's earth was in refining of oils. Other materials have replaced fuller's earth for this purpose to a major extent, but many new uses for fuller's earth have been found, and production has increased in recent years. The new uses include absorbent products, insecticide and pesticide carriers, drilling mud, and many others. The bentonite now produced in Alabama is of the "southern," "low selling," or "calcium" type and is used mainly as foundry-sand bond. Most of the fuller's earth mined now is in the Hawthorn Formation of Miocene age; a lesser amount is produced from the Twiggs Clay Member and other beds in the Barnwell Formation of Eocene age. Inactive pits from which fuller's-earth was produced from other formations occur at several localities. The bentonite now mined in Alabama is in beds of Cretaceous age; several years ago bentonite was produced from Eocene beds in this State.

The evaluation and development of the Eastern North Carolina phosphate deposit resulted in one of the world's largest and most modern phosphate mines and fertilizer complexes at an investment in excess of $90,000,000. The resulting ore beneficiation process showed excellent correlation with pilot plant data. A number of variations from current industrial practices were introduced and projected from bench scale tests through pilot plant to production. Principal among these variations were the following: 1) removal of magnesium by classification, 2) simultaneous flotation of coarse and fine phosphate, 3) the use of saponified fatty acid, 4) utilization of filter wash water for deoiling, 5) utilization of a rougher concentrate for acidulation, 6) calcination of flotation concentrates, and 7) elimination of grinding prior to the manufacture of phosphoric acid.

The selection of a stripping method and subsequently, the stripping equipment, are two of the most important decisions confronting a project engineering staff during the initial feasibility study of a new coal stripping operation. The selected stripping units average from 60 to 70 percent of the total capital outlay for mine equipment and their selection will affect the type, size, and quantity of the attendant equipment, such as loading shovels, drills, haulage trucks, and bulldozers. This paper is intended to report on an in depth study by Utah's Technical Services Staff regarding the selection of stripping equipment for the Goonyella Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia. We will touch briefly, on the objectives considered in this selection; the various alternatives which were explored; the general assumptions that were followed throughout the engineering and design of an appropriate stripping system; and computations necessary to determine the amount and size of stripping equipment. INITIAL EXPLORATION Utah Development Company (presently 90% owned by Utah Construction & Mining Co. and 10% by Australian investors) commenced systematic geological studies of the Bowen Basin coal fields of Central Queensland in 1961. The Blackwater Mine as shown in Figure 1 has since been established in this area and is now producing 3.0 million tons per annum of washed coking coal. Geological reconnaissance was then extended to the northern part of the Bowen Basin and in 1963 Utah's coal prospecting area covered 2444 square miles of Central Queensland. The authority to prospect north of Blackwater has since been trimmed to 810 square miles by relinquishments to the State.

Anomalies of sulfur dioxide and other gases have been defined, by direct measurement, around various sulfide bodies. These readings were made (1) in soil gas and (2) in the atmosphere, from both ground vehicles and, to a limited extent, from helicopters. Test areas included porphyry copper and molybdenum deposits, sulfide bearing vein systems, pyrite zones associated with sandstone uranium accumulations, and pyrite-bearing mine dumps. Some of the deposits are covered by as much as several hundred feet of overburden or barren rock, while others outcrop, or have been exposed by mining operations. Depending on local conditions, background values of sulfur dioxide in soil gas and the atmosphere range from 1 to 15 parts per billion. Using present techniques, anomalous readings are recognized at approximately two times background. Apparent "depth penetration? on known deposits has ranged to several hundred feet. Readings have been made over known deposits from a helicopter and ground vehicle moving at up to 40 mph. The rate at which the survey may be carried out depends largely on the size and extent of the anomaly. The existence and magnitude of sulfur dioxide anomalies around sulfide-bearing deposits is a function of geology, target size, soil moisture, and climatic conditions such as temperature and temperature changes, barometric pressure, wind velocity, and precipitation. Industrial S02 pollution can effectively mask the presence of the anomalies sought.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. Anthracite preparation developments, particularly in the early days of the anthracite industry, formed the basis for the modern coal preparation plants that have become so essential to the coal industry today. The anthracite industry, from early in the 19th century until relatively recently, was a leader in mining, preparation and marketing of coal, and played a leading role in the development of the industrial America we know today. Anthracite was discovered in America in about 1760--the story of Necho Allen is well known--but the rediscoveries leading to mining operations took place about 50 years later. The Wurtz brothers in 1815 at Scranton, the Smith brothers at Wilkes-Barre in 1807, Beach in Hazleton in about 1814, and Boyd in 1816 at Shamokin were all instrumental in promoting early mining and marketing of anthracite (J3. The early canals and railroads were built for the specific purpose of moving anthracite to the market areas. Eventually, the industry grew until, in 1917, it reached a production zenith of a little over 100,000,000 tons, representing about 20 percent of the total coal output in the United States. Almost half of the anthracite produced that year was consumed for domestic heating, a utilization that had dominated the industry for almost 100 years. Initially, anthracite had to be used by gunsmiths and blacksmiths, after which had followed the consumption of extensive quantities for railroads, blast furnaces and foundries, and electric power generation. Most of the markets have been lost to coke, oil, and natural gas. Near the anthracite regions, however, significant quantities are still used for domestic heating, power generation, carbon black manufacture, blending with bituminous coal to make metallurgical coke and fuel, and for other industrial purposes. Thus, anthracite production has not been entirely committed to history, but remains an active industry that follows modern practices in the mining, preparation, shipping, and utilization of a fuel that is still a valuable adjunct to the national economy. In fact, its inherent low sulfur content may make it an important fuel of the future. Estimates indicate there are reserves of anthracite to last for 300 years at a consumption rate of 50,000,000 tons/year. Anthracite Preparation Yesterday A 170-year history of the anthracite industry obviously is not the purpose of this discussion. A complete history of anthracite preparation, the rather unglamorous step in the processing of "mine run" hard coal to make it suitable for the user, is also not practical. Hence, the purpose of this report is to trace the development of some of the most important processes used through the years to meet a part of the demand for energy developed by our modern society. Anthracite preparation in the early days of the industry consisted solely of separating slate from the coal, by hand, underground (Z). This method prevailed for almost 20 years until wrought iron hand rakes were introduced to separate the large and small sizes. Shortly thereafter, the first attempts were made to size and clean the coal aboveground. The coal was dumped on a perforated cast iron plate, and men used sledge hammers to break the larger pieces into smaller sizes suitable for the market. The smallest sizes--that is, the material that went through the plate--were thrown away because they had no value at that time--a concept that existed for many years and actually was the basis for the subsequent "river" coal production and the many silt banks which are landmarks in the anthracite region. The larger sizes, at that time, sold for 50 cents per ton. The Batten breaker, or roll crusher, was invented in 1844, followed soon thereafter by the Snell-Diehm breaker (A). The latter had disadvantages, including excessive waste and fixed product size, but it later was improved in these respects. A breaker was also developed at Minersville, Pa., at about the same time that processed 200 tons of coal per day, using roll crushers and circular screens (1). Handpicking, from the beginning of anthracite preparation, was an important part of the cleaning process and was still being practiced as late as 1950. It was this process that involved the "breaker" boys of coal region lore. How much good handpicking accomplished depended on how much impurity was present in the coal--the more the impurities, the greater the reduction in ash. Thus, high-impurity streams were significantly improved, whereas picking of relatively clean coal was mainly to show an effort to make a quality product. As indicated, picking is largely a visual operation. It was and is wasteful of coal in the larger sizes since some good coal is always associated with the bad. However, it was probably much more effective' in the larger than the smaller sizes.

The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity.
