My qualification to speak on the globalization of the the mining industry comes from having worked in the industry in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australasia in positions ranging from exploration geologist to chief executive. For about a third of my career I have lived and worked in the Southern Hemisphere. And for much of the rest of my career I have been involved in or responsible for activities in the Southern Hemisphere. This has given me the opportunity to experience globalization from the sharp end, as it were. This means speaking English with an Australian accent, Spanish with a Chilean accent, French with a West African accent and Dutch with an English accent. My topic is globalization, especially of the mining industry from a Southern Hemisphere perspective and specifically the experience and history of Gencor in that context. First, I will say a little about what globalization means to the southern part of the world: How and why the South differs from the North and how the challenge of globalization affects a south-based company differently than a northern one. I will also detail how Gencor has made significant progress in globalizing through the acquisition of mining assets from Shell. As Fig. 1 shows, I have divided up the world into northern and southern components, rather than hemispheres. The southern world comprises mainly countries that have emerged from the status of economic - if not political - colonies of nations such as England, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands and, surprisingly, Italy and Germany. I have not considered the Indochinese and Arabian peninsulas in my southern world. The emergence of the. former is still in its early stages while the latter is clearly a part of the northern economic system. Large parts of Africa and South America are geometrically in the Northern Hemisphere but economically in the southern world. The reverse is the case for the IndoPersian peninsula. With the distinguished exception of Australia and South Africa, most of these countries nationalized their mining industries and mineral patrimony after attaining political independence. A major element of the globalization of the mining industry is related to the privatization of the mining industry in these countries and to the opening up of their min¬eral patrimony to non-national exploitation. The Southern Hemisphere is the watery part of the world. It is almost three quarters ocean as against a slight preponderance of land in the north. Economically, ocean areas have only a fraction of the productivity of land, except in a few oil-rich areas like the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. The consequence is that even on an economically level playing field we would expect the south to generate only about one third of the world's economic product.

In recent years attempts have been made to fight open and intensive mine fires by the use of special extinguishers, which are able to produce great volumes of inert gases directed into the fire zone. These extinguishers are derived from turbo-jet engines used in aircrafts and adopted for operations in mine conditions. The purpose of this paper is to draw the attention to a computer simulation method, enabling studies of dynamical behaviour of mine ventilation processes disturbed by open fires, which are also influenced by measures taken during fire fighting actions i.a. the mentioned operating extinguishers. The first part of this paper gives an account of the principles on which the computer simulation program, concerning the non- steady mine ventilation process, the fire as a heat source and the extinguisher as a source of inert gas and moisture has been based. The next part of this paper deals with simplifying assumptions and the subsequent limitations of the derived simulation pro- gram. Finally, from an example of a computer simulation, the results will be presented and relations shown between parameters characterising the ventilation process during the fire fighting action.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. Cyprus Amax's interest in Russia began before the mid-1991 breakup of the former Soviet Union. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began searching for such an opportunity. Early this year, production will begin at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1.75-kt/d (1,930-stpd) open-pit operation that will produce more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. Identifying Russian mining opportunities In late 1990, the first Cyprus Amax people travelled to Russia. The trip was to determine the potential for western firms to develop profitable mines. This encouraging visit suggested that Cyprus Amax focus on the Russian Far East with its mineral riches and its easier access to the United States. The company's initial efforts thus focused on working with the Soviet Union's Northeast Geologic Expedition, the then government agency for exploration and geology in Russia's Far East. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Cyprus Amax continued working with the same people, but they now represented new independent, nongovernmental entities. For three years, Cyprus Amax investigated numerous deposits. This resulted in the identification of two properties of significant interest, one of which was Kubaka. Location Kubaka is located in the Northern Evensk District of the Magadan Oblast in the Russian Far East. This is an area east of Siberia. The project is situated in a mountainous area of the Kolyma Range, about 300 km (985 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. It is 285 km (180 miles) north of the fishing village of Evensk and 380 km (235 miles) northeast of the silver-mining town Omsukchan. The site is 950 km (590 miles) northeast of the regional capital city of Magadan. Magadan, the political and economic center of the Oblast, has a population of about 150,000 people. [New stochastic process models are developed to calculate the probability of various fill levels in section feeders as a function of vehicle interarrival times, payloads and feeder-discharge rates. These models may be utilized to establish the minimum feeder-discharge rate necessary to prevent a feeder, with a particular surge storage capacity, from constraining the section's production rate. In addition, it is shown how the output from these models may also be utilized to calculate the probability of various flow rates at junctions in the conveyor haulage network, enabling one to size gathering belts. The model provides a basis for optimizing, (in economic terms) capacity specifications for feeders and conveyor belts in the materials-handling system by considering tradeoffs in the size of the two types of units.]

A laboratory investigation was performed on flocculation following the addition of polymer to slurries flowing through pipes and in-line (static) mixers. Results are presented showing the effects of flow velocity, pipe length, in-line mixer elements and the use of multiple addition points. Flocculation performance was measured by the settling rate and the supernatant turbidity. The effects of agitation and mixing time are shown to be generally consistent with the results of equivalent tests (both batch and continuous) conducted in stirred tanks.

he leaching behavior of palladium in ammoniacal solutions has been investigated by using the rotating disk technique in an autoclave. The study included the effect of rotating speed, temperature, oxygen pressure, composition of ammoniacal solutions, and catalyst on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of palladium in ammoniacal solutions was discussed in view of the thermodynamics and a kinetic model. Even though the potential-pH diagram suggests that palladium metal can dissolve in ammoniacal solutions at room temperature, it was found that the dissolution was too slow at temperatures below 100°C but was significantly improved at higher temperatures. It was also found that the rotating speed of palladium disk had no effect on the leaching rate. The apparent activation energy was found to be 69.7 kJ/mole. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the dissolution of palladium is controlled by chemical reaction.

Unlike coarse particles (40-50 µm), the fines (<10 µm) have low collision efficiencies with gas bubbles in flotation process. Among the alternative methods for recovering the fines are their aggregation with coarse particles (carrier flotation) and flocculation of the fines alone (shear-flocculation), prior to flotation. In any case, hydrophobic aggregation is the mechanism involved though the technique is known by different names in literature. This paper deals with theory and state-of-the-art of particle aggregation. To illustrate the dependence of aggregation on particle hydrophobicity, charge and, in turn, the sheer force, the results of quartz-DDACI and galena-xanthate systems are considered. In the flotation of complex ores selectivity is achieved by chemical control and aggregation of particles of the same species is analogous to that; however, more work is necessary on ores for a better understanding of the pulp chemical aspects from the view point of selectivity in aggregation. For a few ores, the results of earlier workers confirm improved recoveries of fines by aggregation prior to flotation.

A sewer tunnel being constructed through an urban commercial area was to pass the site of a former gasoline service station. The site was known to have contained leaking underground storage tanks. An environmental assessment of soils on the alignment was performed, and measures were implemented to handle expected contaminants. Despite these precautions, an explosion occurred in the heading when liquid gasoline was encountered. Four workers were injured. This paper presents the findings of an investigation into the cause of the explosion, and examines how concerted efforts by the parties involved failed to prevent it. The level of guidance provided by OSHA Code provisions for tunneling in gassy conditions is discussed.

A near-surface body of readily available Na-montmorillonite is located about 24 km (15 miles) southeast of Fallon, NV. The clay, which forms an irregular deposit about 4.8 km (3 miles) long, lies in altered rhyolite within a fault zone. The clay is similar to Wyoming bentonite but is less uniform in composition and contains less MgO and more Fe2O3 in its crystal structure. The clay interlayer cation population can be estimated by using a modified DTA procedure. With selective mining, the industrial properties of the Nevada clay are adequate for use as drilling mud, in foundry applications and as a sealant for hazardous wastes and canals.

INTRODUCTION A rail rapid transit system called the "Metro" system is presently under construction in the Nation&apos;s Capital area. The agency responsible for the design and construction of the Metro system is the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, an independent tristate organization set up under an Act of Congress and financed by federal, state, and local public funds supplemented by revenue bonds. When completed, the Metro system will comprise nearly 100 route miles. About fifteen percent of this mileage is now under construction, while designs for the-remainder are in progress. The system is scheduled for completion in about eight years at a cost of approximately 3 billion dollars. The Metro system will involve nearly all types of construction generally used for rapid rail transit projects. About half of the mileage will be underground, comprising approximately 16 miles of rock tunnels, 10 miles of earth tunnels, and nearly 21 miles of cut-and-cover construction in earth (see Figure 1.). The remaining 51 miles of the system is planned to be constructed on the surface as at-grade or elevated structures. The system includes 86 passenger stations, 53 of which will be underground structures. Twelve of the underground stations will be large size chambers in rock while other underground stations will be constructed in earth as cut-and-cover structures. Thus, about one-fifth of the system will be designed as underground structures, namely tunnels and stations, in rock. In recent years a great number of papers have been presented at symposiums and have appeared in the literature relative to geologic prediction for rapid excavation and tunneling. Many of these papers describe research projects now underway to investigate tunnel site selection by remote sensing techniques, seismic holography, electro¬magnetic pulse sounding, optical scanning for structural features, and many other exotic geophysical techniques. While it is possible that this research will produce techniques that may prove to be very useful, it appears for the present at least, and perhaps for another decade, that there still will be no substitute for conventional exploration methods such as coring boring, geologic mapping, studies of existing wells, and proven geophysical techniques. Nevertheless, there is still room for tremendous improvement in the conventional techniques for geologic prediction in tunneling. These include: more rapid and accurately aligned coring borings drilled parallel to the tunnel alignment; improved geophysical surveys both prior and during construction; improved methods for predicting ground¬water inflows and water pressures, both of which can greatly influence the cost of driving tunnels. Geophysical techniques can also be ap¬plied to locate deeply incised glacial troughs or ancient buried stream channels that might cross the tunnel alignment. In the meantime, while some researchers continue their efforts to¬ward a breakthrough in new techniques for geologic prediction, it is recommended that other researchers direct their efforts toward sol¬ving specific problems such as accurately predicting ground-water conditions, determining locations of high geostatic stresses, and locations of major fault and shear zones.

Track-type tractors remain one of the most cost-efficient stripping tools available to coal miners. Whether they are "sweetening up" a dragline operation with prebenching or serving as the primary tool, dozers are important in driving down mining costs. This article reviews the application zone of track-type dozers. It also provides suggestions for site setup, equipping tractors and machine operation. In recent years, the track-type tractor has become more of a production tool in mining. With the advent of bigger machines, bulldozers have become a typical component in mining operations, removing overburden down to the top seam of coal. Large tractors can also be teamed up with draglines and other systems to maximize the effectiveness of the mining system. Bulldozers remain the tool of choice for topsoil removal, spoil reclamation or any application that demands low ground pressure, or short distance. The introduction of the 523-kW (700-hp) track-type tractor to the mining industry has made the bulldozer a low-cost-per-ton means of removing overburden. The large tractors offer enough productive capability to be considered prime stripping tools. And they can lower mining costs by complementing other mining systems (dragline, cast blasting and loader/truck). Four criteria determine whether a track-type tractor is the right machine for a particular application: ? Production requirements - dozer may fit job requirements better than a second dragline. [ ] ? Product support - availability of parts, service and technical expertise. ? Labor situation - how much of the cost per ton goes to the operator. ? Resale opportunity - recover a percentage of capital cost. Mining efficiency is economically controlling the cost of any system. Most operations rate the most economical means of moving material as cast blasting, dragline and the track-type tractor. All three of these systems share one common value: They are all sensitive to distance. Regardless of the application, all mining systems have an economic range. Exceeding this distance will affect cost and productivity.

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees&apos; levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard-recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

The need for ground support research in underground excavation has been well identified in recent years by many studies in the subject area (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). A typical conclusion from these reports (1, 2) is that the drill-and-blast (D & B) mining or the mechanical tunnel boring machine (TBM) methods are expected to be continued in use for the needs of tunneling in the immediate future. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) sponsored in June, 1970 advisory conferences on Hardrock and Soft Ground Tunneling (3,4). These two reports were based on the combined response received from approximately six hundred inquiries from 17 nations in the summer of 1969 and which concerned all aspects of present-day inadequacies of, and the needed improvements in the technology of tunneling. Some specific problem areas in ground support and tunnel linings were: 1) the ability to successfully predict rock loads that must be carried by the support system; and 2) inadequate methods for determining the load-carrying capacity of the various support systems. Therefore, the problem area is clearly defined by these two objectives: 1) To find means of predicting rock loads; and 2) To develop methodology for determining safe, efficient, and economical ground support design practices. Noting these research needs from a great number of sources, the United States Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center (SMRC), acting as agent for the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), undertook contract research effort in these problem areas. Work by Jacobs Associates has studied a methodology for specification of temporary artificial support based on the dependent sequence of mining operations and prediction of various rock conditions in the pre-excavation stage. Throughout the world, sedimentary basins are exploited for many different minerals. Frequently, the extractive methods conflict with one another. A case in point is the proximity of oil and gas operations and the mining of coal. Generally, the interference between the two industries lies in the fact that the reserves over- lie or underlie one another. Mining of coal generally is developed on a rectangular pattern in a horizontal mode while oil and gas drilling is developed on a radial pattern in a vertical mode. Coal mining has exhausted vast acreages in various basins with many of those basins being drilled for oil and gas. Those existing wells create problems by requiring the unrecoverable coal pillars to support the well bore, or to make special provisions in order to mine through an existing well. The system works ... more or less; but there are little or no provisions made for additional drilling unless the vast majority of those new wells are drilled through mined-out sections (gob) of those mines. Many states have rules and regulations governing the drilling of oil and gas wells through gob; but, some companies and some regulatory agencies or personnel have deemed such drilling as a hazard to the mining operations. This paper explores the history, technical standards, and safety aspects of drilling oil and gas wells though the gob of worked-out and active mines. It is the opinion of the author that such drilling can be conducted safely while eliminating the re- quired changes in mine projections and the loss of recoverable coal in the form of well pillars.

Commercial quality kaolin deposits occur in fluvial sediments in both central-eastern Georgia and in the eastern Amazon River area of Brazil. Distinctive coarse and fine particle size kaolin deposits are present in both areas; they have many remarkable similarities for mineral deposits occurring at such wide geographic separation. Industrial, mineralogical, crystalline, and chemical resemblance of the coarse and fine kaolin deposits from the two areas will be described in detail. Knowledge of similarities of the Brazilian clays to those which have dominated world production in Georgia will help to develop superior quality kaolin products for world use in paper, paint, plastic, ceramic, and other applications.

All underground operations have limiting factors that influence overall profitability. Hoisting, hauling, available headings, labor, milling capacity and other factors limit how much material can be removed from an underground mine. Consequently, when mines use limited labor to handle the additional rock from overbreak and to perform extra ground support tasks, productive activity is replaced by non-productive work. Mining economics are further penalized when overbreak causes dilution of ore grades. This paper reviews organizational systems that mines have used to create environments which foster the creation of successful overbreak control programs. Actual case histories document the various quality improvement techniques, worker incentives, and practical project management systems used by these mines. A brief review of controlled blasting technology sources and overbreak measurement tools is also included.

In today&apos;s economic environment, Canadian mines can ill afford to neglect their ventilation systems as they can consume 30- 40% of the electricity used in underground mines. In addition, Canadian mines can incur significant heating costs. For mines to be their most cost efficient they must embrace existing and emerging technology to optimize the use of their air; namely, maximizing its work in diluting and removing pollutants, limiting leakage, and avoiding the unnecessary consumption of costly fan pressure all the while ensuring the health of their workforce. Furthermore, in Canadian mines which are heavily dieselized there is great interest within the industry to convert from a rigid quantitative approach to ventilation, based upon engine size, towards a more flexible qualitative approach that provides credit for Clean engine technology" and permits ventilation supply to be driven and based upon pollutant demands. In the future, there is even the possibility that ventilation will only be required to supply oxygen to diesel equipment as the underground hands-on workforce is replaced by surface workers and tele-operation. Such changes will allow mine operators to minimize their electrical usage and operating costs, for in its simplest form the cost of running a fan is proportional to the quantity3; therefore, reducing current ventilation demands or limiting increases brought on by more stringent legislation, can produce very significant cost savings. CANMET, through ventilation surveys and use of its modern 3D-CANVENT ventilation simulator, have been demonstrating to the mining industry how ventilation can be optimally delivered at reduced costs. El-Equip with their leaky-feeder communications and MultiVENT monitoring and control system have facilitated mines to control fans and hence costs, and also monitor such ventilation parameters as pollutant concentrations. These two parties are now combining their efforts to develop an integrated air management system which will be demonstrated at CANMET&apos;s Experimental Mine Val D&apos;Or, Quebec. With such an air management system, the ventilation engineer will have: 1) a simple to use simulator to design and test ventilation scenarios; 2) remote controls of fans, doors and regulators to implement changes; and 3) real-time monitoring of airflow, pollutant concentrations, and both vehicle identity and location to show whether changes are necessary. It is only when all three are available, that a mine&apos;s ventilation system can be operated at minimum cost.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research, Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.
