The opportunity for an exploration geologist to follow a successful exploration project through the feasibility, financing, construction, development, and exploitation phase is rare. In addition, it is not often that the exploration geologist can be present during the mining of a deposit to explain why certain actions were taken or interpretations made, and to find out how these interpretations turned out in actuality. At the Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos mine in New South Wales, Australia, mining has been- in progress for seven years and the writer of this chapter has been intimately associated with the project during the five years of exploration and seven years of exploitation. The Woodsreef mine has had major production problems, the majority of which have stemmed from the unique characteristics of the ore body and fiber. Because of the latter feature, much research has been undertaken by Woods- reef and other scientific organizations in Australia, England, and Canada regarding the Woodsreef fiber. The answers to some of the problems have negated some accepted concepts of asbestos ore milling and led to the development of new techniques. Some of these new techniques include the adoption of microscopic fiber counts as a routine procedure, the modification of accepted evaluation procedures, the development of new machines for dedusting fibers, and the recognition of a fiber with a unique milling behavior pattern and, possibly, properties. The problems experienced can be broadly divided into those associated with the geology and the physical properties of the fiber. It is possible that the same features may manifest themselves in other deposits around the world, and if they can be recognized during the exploration stages, a feasiblity evaluation may be just a little closer to the actual. The Woodsreef chrysotile asbestos deposit (latitude 30°24' S, longitude 150°44' E) is located 80 km north of Tamworth, NSW, Australia. The mine has been in production for six years and has a present scheduled mining rate of 33.11 Mt/y. An eight rock line mill treats an average of 7000 t/day, after beneficiation, and yields fiber grades in the range of group 4 to group 6 with some floats. The estimated re- serves of 30.56 Mt, with an ore to waste ratio of 1:3.0, are contained in two main zones that are designated the North and South zones. Mining started in the South Zone in 1972 and then, be- cause of the higher ore value, moved to the North Zone in 1975. Presently, there are two distinct open cuts referred to as the South and North pits that will eventually be worked together. The Woodsreef mine is owned by Woodsreef Mines Ltd. and is operated by Chrysotile Corp. of Australia Pty. Ltd., and is one of only two producing asbestos mines in Australia. The second mine is at Baryulgil, (latitude 29°13' S, longitude 152°37' E), and is operated by a subsidiary of Woodsreef Mines Ltd. This operation produces about 500 t/y for a captive market. An exploration program is being conducted in the area surrounding this small producer with a significant degree of success. The concepts developed during the exploitation of the Woodsreef deposit are being incorporated in the evaluation of the Baryulgil area, and if the Baryulgil deposit proves to be eco- nomic it is hoped that this approach will eliminate some of the major crises that have beset the production at Woodsreef during the first four years of operation. Introduction Project scheduling . . . . • What is it? • Why is it done? • Who does it? • How is it done? • When is it done? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this paper. It is intended that by exploring these questions, an understanding of project scheduling, its purpose and benefits can be achieved. The purpose of this article is not to describe in detail "how to schedule", but rather to give an overview of the scheduling function on a project. A successful scheduling effort is dependent upon the people responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the schedule, and the tools and procedures that are used. These three elements are integral components of project scheduling. What is it? A schedule is the integration of network relationships, resource constraints and the calendar. The schedule identifies when the activities "will" be done, while the network states when they "must" be done. Networking techniques are the most widely accepted scheduling tool for complex projects. The benefit of the network is the simplicity in illustrating, presenting and analyzing the dependency relationships of a project. The logic network is the foundation of the schedule. When calendar dates are applied to the logic network, it becomes a schedule which provides the basis for evaluation of project status, forecasting the occurrence of events and controlling the project. The sequence of activities that requires the longest time to complete determines the overall duration of the schedule. This longest sequence of activities is called the "critical path". The "critical path method" (CPM) is used to describe this particular schedule network methodology. The two common conventions of CPM networks are the "arrow diagram met hod" (ADM) and the "precedence diagram method" (PIM). There are arguments in favor of each of these two methods, and usually the one that is used is a matter of personal preference, project directive or corporate procedure.

Based on current sedimentation theory an on-line thickener model was developed and coupled with an extended Kalman Filter to obtain additional information such as the compression zone level and concentration, a corrected underflow concentration, the inventory, and some rheological information. The on-line model was installed and tested for robustness for periods up to three days in an industrial environment giving good results. Emphasis was given to signal processing and selecting the appropriate input variables for filtering. The analysis of the thickener from a phenomenlogical point of view provides for better operation, establishes the limiting operating conditions, and assists in the design of control strategies.

Hydraulic powered supports have been employed in the U. S. longwall mining for the last two' decades. Yet the sciences of roof control at the powered supported faces remain largely unknown. Many questions remain unanswered. To address the problems, field investigations were conducted from 1980 to 1984 in seven longwall faces (1-10)(Table 1). Some of the findings have been reported by Peng and Chiang (11). The basic geological conditions of these panels are listed in Table 2. The mining equipment used in these longwall panels are listed in Table 3. Instrumentation and Observation Programs Two events were generally instrumented: one was the hydraulic leg pressures of the powered supports, and the other was the canopy and base plate load distributions.

INTRODUCTION Most metallic minerals and some industrial minerals have a relatively high specific gravity and most have at one time or another been concentrated by gravity methods. The principles of gravity concentration are straightforward, well documented and easy to understand, but in practice there are many pitfalls that await the engineer in the development of an integrated flowsheet. Gravity concentration equipment has a long history of use and there is a great diversity available. The equipment is capable of treating material over a broad size range, only falling off in efficiency in the very fine sizes. Gravity concentration is also inexpensive, generally free of environmental problems, and commercial equipment can process large tonnages of ore with a minimum of capital cost. As might be expected of an efficient and low cost process, the bulk of the tonnage quickly and inexpensively. Another obvious application is treating mineral deposits such as hematite and manganese ores that are sufficiently liberated after a minimum of crushing to allow production of a coarse concentrate that will meet market specifications. Except for hand picking and mechanical sorting, there is no competing process on coarse size material. Conversely, it is sometimes obvious that gravity concentration does not warrant consideration. Examples are ores that require very fine grinding to attain liberation, for ores where the minerals of interest have a gravity similar to the gangue, and ores that are strongly magnetic. INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. THE PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM All concentrators should start with a planned maintenance program from day one. Every- body thinks they have a program in place before start-up, but in reality, most have only a fraction of what is needed to avoid the "Post Start-up Disaster" (PSD) - two years for start-up is not that uncommon. An effective program has all of the following: (1) Good people. (2) Area Maintenance. (3) Good PM Checklists. (4) Daily Work Schedules. (5) Written Work Orders. (6) Equipment Histories. (7) Backlog Control. The installation of a workable program takes hard work, talent, and commitment. You have to know what you are doing (hard work will not replace talent). Good People Good people are available in any location if you make the effort. Always check references carefully (both superiors, peers and subordinates). Was the last concentrator they worked at successful? Was it clean? Find out! Success or failure follows people around. I know people who are experts on PSD because they have lived through it three or four times. You need some college trained people with hands-on experience. There are no secrets, you have to make the effort. If you make a mistake in hiring (and you probably will), make the tough decision necessary to rectify it quickly. Area Maintenance Area maintenance refers to organization of supervision such that one person is uniquely accountable for every inch of ground and piece of equipment. Avoid overlapping authority if at all possible. You must have a planner as a staff position. A foreman cannot effectively plan and

This study deals with the development and utilization of computer models for evaluating the extent to which variability of raw material grades can be reduced from the deposit to the processing plant. The specific case of a cement works is examined. The deposit and the elementary quarring operations were modeled for the medium and long-term planning of production with the objective of predicting grade variability of the flow stream in time. The feeds inferred from previous modellings were used for simulating storage operations. In particular, the storage process (linear stockpile, as an alternative, blending from various heaps) was modelled in order to select the main parameters of the process to minimize grade variations of the feed to mill. The ways followed for modelling the prehomogenization process are described. The homogenization performance and efficiency in the silo stage has also been studied and an estimate made of the distribution of residence time on the basis of input and output sampling.

INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. Statistical variability in rock strength can be evaluated by rapid, inexpensive ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements, an important consideration since rational probabilistic design in rock is often hampered by the cost of obtaining sufficient strength data. Experimental ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements on a set of 96 limestone specimens showed two distinct statistical populations. Both populations followed Weibull distributions, with flexural strength distributions paralleling pulse velocity distributions. Thus, experimental results suggest that strength variability may be predicted from a few rationally selected strength measurements and several ultrasonic tests. The correspondence between strength and velocity may then be used to develop an experimental transformation function, allowing the development of a statistical distribution function for strength based on the known statistics of velocity. Comparison of experimental groups with full sets of corresponding strength1 velocity data showed the technique offers a fairly accurate description of the statistics of strength.

The productivity and fuel efficiency of iron-ore blast furnace operations has greatly increased in recent times. These improvements, particularly to the Japanese steel industry, have primarily arisen from process engineering studies of the blast furnace and associated operations such as sintering. The development of fluxed sinter based on iron-ore fines reacted to produce highly reducible, low slag sinters has contributed further to a reduction in fuel requirements. The Pilbara province of Western Australia is a significant source of these iron-ore fines supplied to the international market. Increasingly, this market is being offered high quality ores from other foreign sources. To technically assist companies in improving the processing efficiency of ores, and to improve the technical marketing of ores by modelling the processing characteristics of Australian/international ore blends, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) is actively assisting the industry by researching the general theme of 'iron ore from mine to metal in this paper we outline progress towards a numerical description of: a. ore deposit classification. b. Degradation during transport. c. Direct reduction of iron ore. d. Liquid bath ore reduction/smelting. e. Industrial sintering.

Flotation circuits of a range of complexity are in use for a large number of ores. Since each ore is different and end-product quality requirements are not necessarily the same, circuit configurations of varying complexity are designed. How- ever, certain basic types of circuit configurations can be identified based upon the flotation behavior of the ores. These basic types can be combined to develop the specific f lowsheet configurations for a given ore. This chapter begins with a brief discussion of basic flowsheet configurations. Examples of the flowsheet configurations for a number of specific ores bearing different minerals are then described.

Determination of the minimum sampling requirements of the run-of-mine (ROM) coal is very important for the purpose of meeting contract specifications. It is also important for the purpose of meeting emission regulations at a coal-burning power plant, such as the one located at Homer City, Pa. The classical statistical sampling theory can be applied to this problem, if ROM coal samples are known to be spatially (or serially) uncorrelated. On the other hand, the estimation variance concept from the Matherson's geostatistics must be used, if the samples are spatially correlated. Conditional simulation technique combined with simulation of the existing mining method is used to determine under which circumstances ROM coal samples do not preserve the spatial correlation. Only after establishing the degree of correlation that exists among ROM samples, an optimal sampling scheme can be devised using either the classical statistics Or the geostatistics. The minimum required sample volume can then be calculated using the well-known Gy's formula. This paper describes the results of the above investigation using the Helen coal mine data of the Homer City Owners. Empirical guidelines for determining the degree of correlation are also provided for coal mine operators.

The occurrence and distribution of organic sulfur in coals may be investigated using electron probe microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and optical petrography. A general relationship exists between macerals and organic sulfur contents in individual coals: sporinite, resinite = micrinite, vitrinite > pseudovitrinite = semifusinite = macrinite > fusinite. With increasing organic sulfur content of a coal, the total range in organic sulfur content between macerals containing high and low organic sulfur contents likewise increases. Furthermore, the organic sulfur content of the vitrinite in most coals equals the organic sulfur content of the coal. For any individual coal, organic sulfur contents of macerals correlate inversely with reflectance-in-oil measurements, but the amount the organic sulfur contents vary between macerals cannot be calculated based solely on the coal's rank. Formation of pyrite following peatification has no effect on organic sulfur contents of surrounding macerals.

Since the record year of 1981 through 1985 the tonnage of weighting materials (barite and other heavy minerals) used in drilling fluids has decreased an estimated 49%. As in the past, barite still makes up over 90% of the minerals used for weighting materials in drilling fluid. Domestic production of barite has decreased 69% since 1981 and imported barite has made up over 50% of the total barite consumed since 1982. See Figure 1 for usage of barite. The number of operating grinding plants has decreased from 69 in 1982 to 39 at the end of 1985. With the decrease in demand of weighting materials for drilling fluids and an over capacity of grinding existing, prices for weighting materials have decreased dramatically. Although the American Petroleum Institute has not changed any of the specifications for barite, some users have initiated their own new specifications and have proposed to have them included in the API specifications. The exploration for and development of oil and gas dictates the level of weighting material used in the drilling fluids industry. Most forecasters do not foresee (or predict) increases in the level of drilling until the 90's. The primary or unground barite produced in the U.S. mines has a difficult time competing with imported barite due to the location of the mines. These mines are located in North Central Nevada, with small tonnages being produced in California, Missouri, Illinois, Montana and Washington. The major reason, is the difference in transportation costs from the mines versus ocean freight rates from the foreign ports to the major area of use, the U.S. Gulf. Since 1981, the production of primary barite has decreased from 2,849,000/ST (2,584,596/MT) in 1981 to an estimated 890,000/ ST (807,403/MT) in 1985(1). If it were not for the use of unit trains by some producers the production of primary barite in the U.S. would have probably declined another 20% in 1985. During the same period, of the total amount of barite consumed in the U.S., imported barite ore increased from 417, in 1981 to 65% in 1985. The major exporting countries to the U.S. during this period were China 46.27, Morocco 15.27., Chile 10%, Peru 8.4%, India 7.9%, Mexico 5.4%, Thailand 3.9% and Ireland 2.3%.

INTRODUCTION The Control Problem The need for automatic control in flotation plants stems from frequent and randomly occurring disturbances to the feed slurry. Typical disturbances occur in the solids feedrate, the slurry percent sol ids, and the mineralogy and flotability of the gangue and valuable minerals. In plants where semi -autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are used, feedrate changes are very large and changes in feed percent solids of 1m or more are common. Mineralogy changes between valuable minerals are common, as are changes in the host gangue rock. As these changes occur, the operator can attempt to compensate for them by making adjustments to the flotation cell levels, the dosage rates of the collectors and frothers, the pH, and in some cases the aeration rate of the cells. This problem is sometimes complicated by the fact that different sections of the flotation plant will be processing different ore types at the same time. Potential Savings with Control Flotation control brings about savings or plant improvements in two areas; the first is in improved metallurgy and the second is in reagent savings. Improved metallurgy includes increases in the average plant recovery and achieves target concentrate grade level s more consistently. Average recovery increases between 1.0 and 5.0 percentage points have been widely reported (Paakkinen, 1979; Sutherland, 1984). Reagent savings of up to 40 percent have also been reported (Hales, 1985). VARIABLES OF IMPORTANCE Control led, Manipulated, and Disturbance Variables The initial step in the analysis of the flotation control problem is identification of important variables which can affect the efficiency of separation. The efficiency of separation is represented by a group of controlled variables which can quantify the performance of a flotation circuit. This group includes variables such as grade, recovery, tonnage through- put, and circulating loads. The efficiency of separation of a flotation circuit may generally be defined by a grade recovery map, where each point on this map re- presents a set of operating conditions (see Figure 1). However, the combination of operating conditions must be set to operate close to the economic optimum. The group of operating variables which are changed in order to achieve desired circuit performance are called manipulated variables and can be classified into two

GENERAL STATEMENT The primary objectives of any field data gath¬ering effort should be to (1) identify and gather the data necessary for the project and (2) obtain the data in a state-of-the-art manner. All too often the initial field data are collected both areally and tem¬porally in an illogical manner without the guidance of a conceptual model of the ground water flow systems involved or even a review of existing geo¬logic literature on the area of interest. The initial data collected frequently are of limited value while necessary basic reconnaissance information is miss¬ing. Initial field data should be collected with the intent of developing a hydrologic overview of the potential mine site and surrounding area. Ob¬viously, one of the initial objectives is to define the area requiring a hydrologic investigation. The data requirements should be identified by the time frame in which collection should be made and by the corresponding increase in sophistication of the data requirements with development and operation of the mine. The data requirements are summarized in Table 1. INITIAL LEVEL SITE INVESTIGATION Area Determination The initial task of any hydrogeologic investi¬gation is to determine the boundaries of the area requiring study. Obviously, the site of the proposed mine is included in the study area. The areal extent beyond the site may be determined from an eval¬uation of existing geologic and topographic maps. Those formations that overlie the ore body, the formations containing the ore body, and the formation(s) that lies immediately beneath the ore body are of direct concern for proper site recon¬naissance. Additional formations below the ore body may require study depending upon their thick¬ness, hydraulic conductivity, and degree of inter¬connection with the mine workings. This initial viewpoint identifies hydrostratigraphic units based strictly on geologic concepts such as mineralogy and structure. Formation outcrops, synclines, an¬ticlines, faults, and fracture and joint patterns are used to delineate the area of the site reconnaissance. The simplistic hydrogeologic environment (il¬lustrated in Fig. 3, chapter 2) requires that field data be collected via test wells and/or geophysical techniques. This approach is necessitated by the lack of surface features such as formation outcrops, streams, and springs. Fig. 5 (chapter 2) illustrates a slightly more complex hydrogeologic regime. The potential mine sites at locations A, B, C, D, and E each intercept a different ground water flow sys¬tem or combination of flow systems. Therefore, each mine location requires that a different area and size of area be investigated. A more complex geologic setting as illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 (chapter 2) may be approached differently. The area included for the site recon¬naissance should encompass sufficient surrounding area to include the outcrops of those formations suspected of being influenced by the future mine. Even adjacent areas not suspected of being influ¬enced may be investigated if the formations of in¬terest crop out in those areas. Such an extension of the area of investigation would provide a greater regional understanding of the hydrogeologic properties of the formations (hydrostratigraphic units) of interest. Geologic Investigation The initial step before conducting the site re¬connaissance is to review all existing literature on the geology of the area. Existing information should be augmented with new exploration data on the dip, strike, thickness, and lateral extent of the for¬mations in the area. Exploration hole logs should be reviewed for indications of lost circulation, rub¬ble zones, and water producing zones. INTRODUCTION In other chapters of this volume many of the important technical aspects in the design of concentration and dewatering circuits have been discussed. This chapter will deal with the steps necessary to bring that information together in order to produce the specifications necessary to purchase the equipment and complete the design. It deals with the plant as a whole rather than just concentration and dewatering, since the steps are essentially the same. Prerequisites to Engineering Design Feasibility studies will have been completed and design parameters established prior to the start of the engineering design stages for a metallurgical plant. The data base for the feasibility studies will have included laboratory and/or pilot plant test work, historical data, proposed plant site data such as climatology, topographic mapping, geological and geotechnical information. These studies will have established the general project design criteria as well as the process design criteria leading to the preparation of preliminary flowsheet ( s) and/or alternative process flowsheets. These will have incorporated metallurgical and material balances, allowing identification of major equipment items, and development of preliminary plant site plot plans. Preliminary technical and economic assessments and recommendations will have been prepared during this phase for Owner's review and evaluation of the technical, physical, and cost effectiveness of the overall project and its component process, process facilities, and supporting facilities elements. After Ownert s approval and decision to proceed, the engineering design can be initiated, using the above information as the basis. Engineering Design Phase The engineering design of metallurgical plants and their elements are generally developed in two sequential stages, namely: (1) Basic ("Front end") Engineering Design (2) Detail Engineering Design Figure 1 relates these engineering stages to the entire program from feasibility through construction.
