"Stricter environmental regulations demand for safer treatment and disposal of incineratior fly ashes. So far no sound technology and processes are available for a sustainable and ecological treatment of the waste incineration ashes, and only partial treatment is practised for temporary and short-term solutions. New processes and technology need to be developed for comprehensive utilization and detoxification of the MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) incinerator residues. The objective of the current research is to better understand the behaviour of the environmental harmful elements during low or high temperature treatment, and to find an optimum route for an efficient processing of the incineration fly ash. In the present study, the fly ashes including boiler ash and ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) ash sampled from a MSW incinerator were washed with warm water, and the residues were dried and sintered or vitrified at high temperatures. The solutions from ash washing were analysed, and will be treated for salt extraction and purification. The ash residues before and after thermal treatment were also analysed. The results of vitrification and thermal behaviour were compared with those from the ashes without pre-washing. It was found that water pre-washing is an efficient way to remove certain water-dissolvable volatile salts such as chlorides, and thus the secondary emissions during vitrification could be reduced. INTRODUCTION The air pollution control residues from MSW incineration are classified as harzardous waste, including boiler ash, ESP ash and filter cake. The boiler ash is the firstly settled flue dust in the dust-collecting equipment under the boiler, the ESP ash is collected by an electrostatic precipitator in the second step, finally the flue-gas is further cleaned by the wet-scrubbers and residues are accumulated in the filter cake. Both the boiler ash and ESP ash are classified as hazardous materials, harmful to the environment due to the high concentrations of environmental hazardous elements. However, due to the different locations of the ash collection, the boiler ash has different compositions compared to the ESP ash, and is considered less toxic. Fly ash is generally toxic and with low bulk density, and has to be treated before final disposal. The current industrial practice is normally the landfilling after partial detoxification such as cement solidification."

Sticking phenomenon occurring during hot rolling of two STS 430JlL ferritic stainless steels was analyzed by hot-rolling simulation tests. The sticking started from the initial nucleation stage in which the rolled materials were stuck onto the roll specimen surface, proceeded to the growth stage in which stuck fragments grew further, and reached the saturation stage. The modified 430JlL steel had a smaller number of sticking nucleation sites and slower growth rate than the conventional 430JlL steel because of higher high temperature hardness, thereby leading to less serious sticking. When the simulation test was conducted at 1070 °c, Cr oxides were formed on the surface of the rolled materials, and thus the sticking was drastically reduced because of the increased surface hardness of the rolled materials. In order to prevent the sticking, high-temperature properties of the rolled materials should be enhanced when rolled at 900°C or 1000 °C, and rolling conditions and alloying compositions, under which the oxide formation was promoted, were more important than high-temperature properties when rolled at higher temperatures than 1000 oC.

"The present work was aimed at synthesizing nanostructured hybrid materials derived from the functionalization of smectite clays with ligands containing thiol (-SH) groups for application in cadmium adsorption processes. An in nature Brazilian bentonite was investigated. The modification route was based on the grafting reaction between hydroxyl groups present on clay surface and the hydrolyzable alkoxy group of the (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane in dry toluene under reflux. The present work showed that the proposed modification route was effective for the grafting of the thiol groups in the clay structure. The thiol-functionalized bentonite samples showed average binding capacities 160% higher with respect to Cd2+ to those obtained with the ungrafted material. These results support a mechanism of adsorption involving primarily ion complexation by the thiol groups (specific) instead of cation exchange (unspecific). The proposed modification processes are suggested for the preparation of novel adsorbent materials with controlled selectivity and specificity and therefore with good potential for separation and pre-concentration purposes.IntroductionMany efforts have recently been devoted to the design and preparation of inorganic-organic nanomaterials because of their potential application in novel functional materials. The intercalation of organic species within the spaces between interlayers of inorganic layered crystals provides nanostructures consisting of alternating layers of inorganic and organic compound. The intercalation reactions occur by insertion of mobile guest species (neutral, molecules, or ions) into the accessible crystallographic-defined vacant sites located between the layers (interlayer spacing) of the layered host structure [1}.Silane coupling agents, used widely for the modification of silica surfaces, have also been employed more recently for modification of layered silicates [2,3,4,5]. Modification with organosilane involves grafting reactions by establishing covalent bonds between the reactive groups of the layer, normally hydroxyl groups, and silane molecules. These reactions can be restricted to the external surface (the basal spacing remains unchanged) or to the interlayer surface, in which case an interlayer expansion occurs. The resulting material can be defined as a hybrid material or, more specifically, functionalized inorganic layered material [1]."

"The major source of environmental pollution in urban areas is the transport sector and its impact on human health and the greenhouse is preoccupying. In many works of literature is monitored the pollutants in urban cities, however in specific areas such as universities, they are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this work is to monitorate the gaseous pollutans in a bus terminal at Santa Cruz do Sul University-UNISC and to develop a control framework of the air quality. Six points were selected for monitoring, being one of them inside a bus. The monitoring of CO, HC and CO2 were carried out on arrival and departure of the bus. Preliminary results conducted in a day of spring showed that the most critical condition was during the night shift, where the concentration of CO (200 ppm) was the highest, caused by the vehicles increase, due to the larger number of students.IntroductionAccording to Mascarenhas et al, 2005, air pollutants are responsible for various effects on vegetation, ecosystems and is recognized as one of major public health problems of today, with harmful effect on humans even at levels considered safe by Brazilian legislation.There are numerous scientific papers linking air pollution with respiratory problems, cardiovascular which hinder the daily life because many of these diseases are chronic and may even lead to death, as was noted by Brook et al, 2004.There is a significant increase in the last decades of emissions to air resulting mainly from human activities. Already being observed the relationship of these emissions with the change in global climate, IPCC, 1995.They are a multitude of pollutants from the atmosphere, and its sources and its effects. The effect of Greenhouse gases (GHG), representing less than 1% of the gases in the atmosphere, controlling the flow of energy in the atmosphere. The increase in emissions of greenhouse gases is affecting the Earth's average temperature, which depends on the balance between these flows, in particular the flow of solar radiation reaching the surface and the flow of infrared radiation sent into space.One of the main greenhouse gases to this imbalance is the gas methane (CH4). Methane is produced by anaerobic decomposition of organic substances, through the action of bacteria metanogenic conditions that require highly reduced to its growth. This gas is released into the atmosphere mainly by transport diffusive by aerenchyma (vascular tissue) plant and also by diffusion through the water slide. (Bont et al., 1978)."

"Elkem has developed a process that utilizes SPL as a raw material for pig iron production. This process will be demonstrated in industrial scale during 2008 and 2009. The process developed produce iron, and the reduction material used, is the carbon present in the SPL. The iron source could be either virgin iron ore or waste/recycled material from the steel industry. The SPLrefractory and bath material is dissolved in the slag produced. The slag is designed so that any leaching of environmentally dangerous elements is minimized. This process can in addition to SPL, consume other types of waste derived from the primary production of aluminium. Elkem intends to supply this demo project with SPL and other waste products from external sources, domestic as well as international ones.IntroductionSpent Pot Lining (SPL) is generated when an electrolytic cell for producing aluminium is taken out of service and the refractory and carbon lining is removed from the steel potshell.The yearly generation of SPL world wide is exceeding 500 000 tonnes. The major amount of this quantity is stockpiled or land filled, unprocessed.SPL contain large amount of water soluble fluorides and some amount of cyanides and is classified as hazardous waste in most countries."

"An electrochemical cell has been designed to treat very diluted cobalt solutions, i.e. those deriving from recycling processes of lithium-ion batteries. A reticulated vitreous carbon sponge was used as cathode and a Pt-coated Ti net as anode. A controlled potential electrolysis has been carried out in a solution flowing in the cell and maintained at a constant pH of 6.5. Considering the cathode dimensions (10.0 cm * 10.0 cm * 1.25 cm), rather high volumes of solution (>1 litre) can be treated with flow rates up to 1.6 l/min. The process yield is obviously related to the solution concentration; it has been observed that, starting with a solution containing 200 ppm of Co2+, the yield is initially ~35-40%, but it decreases to ~20% when 80% of the initial cobalt content has been electrowon. The yield increases up to ~50% if the carbon electrode is coated by cobalt. The conditions allowing a fast and complete removal of cobalt are outlined. Introduction Industrial liquid effluents containing heavy metal ions arise not only during hydrometallurgical processing, but also in many sector of chemical industries utilizing metal catalysts and process reagents. These waste solutions containing low quantities of metallic ions can be treated by chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, etc. before final discharge. All these techniques could be efficient for complying the aqueous effluents with the severe rules related to the environmental impact, but they can not directly produce metals. Particularly the chemical precipitation presents two main drawbacks, huge amount of sludge prodction and reagent costs to produce this useless and sometime dangerous sludge that have to be considered. Electrochemical technologies can be used for the treatment of effluents polluted by metal ions, showing the following advantages in comparison with other processes: 1. recovering of the polluting substances in metallic forms, with subsequent reusing; 2. absence of process slag, which should be subsequently disposed of. In this work an electrochemical reactor with a reticulated vitreous carbon cathode and a platinated titanium net anode has been designed and utilized for removal Co from waste aqueous solutions. Porous materials have been used as electrodes for this cell, as their high specific surface area favours the treatment of these low metal content solutions (1-7). This kind of electrodic material presents very interesting chemical-physical characteristics such as: low density, low thermal expansion and high electrical and thermal conductivities; particularly the reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) presents a very elevated void volume, rigid structure, good resistance to temperatures in non-oxidizing environments and very low resistance to fluid flow."

"A study is carried out to see the adequacy of using flying ashes coming out from a Power Station to eliminate the copper present in waste cyanide waters that are generated in gold mines.Tests were carried out to see how effective the use of ashes taken from two Power Stations could become. Later, the tests are made using ashes coming from Narcea Power Station as this station is near the mine under study.The work is centred on looking for an economically adequate solution to close the waste decanting ponds of the mine. After several tests, a solution is reached through filtration in static layers.IntroductionThe use of coal to adsorb some water-soluble substances has been widely studied [1,2,3,4,] both in the treatment of drinking waters and in determined stages of selective detachment of cyanide gold complexes in cyanide lixiviation processes [5]. Flying ashes sent to the atmosphere by Power Stations as a sub-product of the combustion of this combustible are generally made of more of a 70 % of a vitreous aluminosilicated material and of an active residual material which may be changeable making them potentially useable as adsorbents. Nevertheless, the properties of each kind of ashes depend on the characteristics of the Power Station, of the combustibles being used, of the combustion system, etc.The aim of this work is to demonstrate the adequacy of flying ashes to eliminate the copper present in cyanide waters coming from gold mines either by adsorption or precipitation of the metal. For this study, tests are carried out with Asturian ashes which have a low quantity of lime. The results obtained in the tests demonstrate the effectivity of the method used. To be absolutely concrete, the work is carried out to establish the use of these ashes in the closing of Asturian installations of cyanide lixiviation"

"The traditional technologies for production of the coprecipitated and deposited catalysts are analyzed from the standpoint of diversion of application of the feedstock and increase of efficiency for its usage. The options for return of the metals of spent catalysts to the catalysts production are described. The novel environmentally friendly and cost efficient approach for reutilization of the spent catalysts is realized in practice. It anticipates application along with spent catalysts of the waste generated in the catalytic productions. Reutilization of the Ni-containing catalysts is referred as an illustration. Introduction The recent development of large catalytic manufacturing for organic and inorganic synthesis, and petroleum refinery as well as for applied environmental catalysis has brought about increase and diversification of catalysts production. The generation of spent catalysts has been increased correspondently. The feedstock for production of catalysts is mostly metals in a form of nitrates, carbonates, hydroxides, hydroxydcarbonates. Sometimes salts of organic acids, of ammoniates, of chlorides and of sulphates occur. All these materials are scarce and expensive. So their repeated use by reutilization of spent catalysts is very actual issue. The traditional recycling the Fe-, Cr-, Ni-, Cu- or Zn-containing spent catalysts are carried out by pyrometallurgical reclamation of pure metals or alloys. They can not be used directly in production of catalysts [1, 2]. The hydrometallurgical approach is used for recycling spent catalysts with PGM, W, Mo, Co, Ni or Cu. It provides production of salts of these metals in a form of sulphates, chlorides, carbonates, hydroxydcarbonates and sometimes nitrates or ammoniates. Only a limited number of these salts can be used directly in production of catalysts. Material losses during catalysts production The basic feedstock for manufacturing coprecipitated and deposited catalysts that may be produced from the spent catalysts is aqueous solutions of metals nitrates. Their production is based on application of nitric acid as a dissolvent. About half of it is lost with the flue gases in a form of nitrates vapor and nitrogen oxides (II, IV). During the process of arsenic bearing gold concentration biooxidation, the content of chloride ion in water is a very important factor to the activity of bacteria and the oxidation of sulfide minerals. In this paper, the influence of underground mine water with different chloride ion content to the biooxidation of arsenic bearing gold concentration and the limit of chloride ion content to bacteria were summarized. These results indicated if the content of chloride ion was less than 1.2g/L, the bacteria?s ability to oxidize sulfide minerals was little affected, and if the content of chloride ion were increased to 2g/L or more, the activity of bacteria was seriously restrained, and if the content of chloride ion were increased to 4g/L, the activity of bacteria was absolutely restrained. So, as the content of chloride ion in water was cumulated to 2g/L or more in biooxidation plant, the water must be refreshed to maintain normal production.

In recent years, several rare earth intermetallic compounds with the B2-type structure have been reported to exhibit high tensile ductility and high KIC fracture toughness at room temperature. These materials retain considerable ductility even at 77K. These are noteworthy findings because most intermetallics possess poor room temperature ductility and low fracture toughness unless one or more special contrivances are applied (e.g., doping with small additions of interstitial elements, offstoichiometric compositions, testing in ultra-dry atmospheres, etc.). This paper summarizes recent findings on rare earth B2 intermetallics. These include the determination of the active slip systems; the strain rate sensitivities; yield strength maxima at elevated temperatures; the search for possible twinning and stress-induced phase transformations; ab initio calculations of their defect energies and the anisotropy of dislocation line tension. Potential applications of these materials and the possibilities that this study may suggest strategies for increasing ductility in other intermetallic compounds are discussed.

"This work has for objectives to characterize a waste generated in the form of sludge during the treatment of the effluent of a paper making industry and to evaluate the effect of its incorporation up to 10 wt.% on the properties of a clayey body used for brick production. For the characterization of the waste the following techniques were used: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, differential thermal analysis and termogravimetric analysis with mass spectrometry. Specimens were prepared by uniaxial pressing at 20 MPa before firing at 750 °C. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that, in agreement with the characteristics of the waste, its recycling into red ceramic can contribute to decrease the consumption of fuel during the firing stage. However, the waste changes the physical and mechanical properties, generating a deleterious effect on the water absorption and flexural rupture strength of the ceramic.IntroductionAccording to the Brazilian Association of Pulp and Paper, in the last 10 years, the global production of paper grew 35%. Brazil produced 8,2 million tons of paper in 2004 and held the position of the seventh largest world manufacturer of pulp, with about 9,4 million tons per year [1]. The pulp and paper industry generates effluents that present problems related to their disposal, even after the treatment. Among the solid wastes generated by this industry, the main waste is the primary sludge from the effluent treatment plant (ETP).After the initial treatment the decanted solids go through a dewatering stage, generating the solid form denominated primary sludge. This sludge resembles a paper paste of dark gray color when humid, and clear gray color when dry. This primary waste is composed basically of kaolin, pulp, traces of chemical substances and water. This waste generated in the pulp and paper industry depends on the characteristics of the process and of the employed techniques. It can vary significantly from one industrial unit to another, even in the case that the final products are similar. Its composition is approximately 60% of kaolin and 40% of pulp, and these percentages can vary in some moments as a function of the process [2,3]."

"During an annual inventory of nuclear material, a plated steel container which contained plutonium oxide failed. The container had been packaged for temporary storage but had been overlooked and remained in storage for more than 23 years. Although it was determined that the failure occurred through the slip-top rim, a metallurgical evaluation was requested to help to determine the integrity of the container.Optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the character and degree of corrosion in the container. The depth of corrosion, measured at approximately 10 µm, did not pose a threat to the integrity of the container. However, the corrosion morphology and chemistry did suggest that a galvanic cell had developed between the tin and steel from the condensation of water. The morphology also suggests that the attack of the steel took place over a series of cycles due to changes of the environment.IntroductionMetallographic analysis was requested as part of the investigation into the mechanism of the failure of a slip-top container (#38621) containing plutonium oxide (PuO2) powder. The container had leaked during a special nuclear material (SNM) annual inventory causing contamination and closure of the vault. A photograph of the container and interior container is shown on the right in Figure 1. An initial investigation established that the source of contamination was the consequence of the failure of multiple layers of containment. Initially by the deterioration of the interior plastic bottle and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bagout bag, and finally through the lid and steel container interface at a location where tape had not adhered properly [1]. Although the source of the breach was established, it was determined that metallographic analysis was important to establish the extent of deterioration of the steel container."

"Residues from waste incineration (bottom ashes) form large amounts of heavy metal-rich waste. Theoretically, heating and the addition of chloride to the ashes could remove these metals by formation of volatile metal chlorides. The remaining heavy metal-poor ashes could be used, for example, as cement additives. In the proposed process of our study we used bypass dust from the cement industry as chloride additives to the bottom ashes. We aim to determine experimentally the optimal conditions to remove heavy metals from ashes and to simulate this process by thermo- chemical modeling. In our experiment we investigate heavy metal flows by heating of differently composed mixtures of bottoms ash and bypass dust in dependence of different furnace temperatures (500-1200 °C). Furthermore, we investigate the reactivity (leaching characteristic) of the resulting product in order to predict if secondary residues can be landfilled in agreement to Swiss regulations for inert materials.IntroductionThe incineration of garbage is generally considered as the most environmentally friendly method for the reduction of municipal solid waste. This is because, compared to traditional storage of waste on landfills, incineration produces less greenhouse gases and destroys toxic organic compounds. The released exothermic energy can be recuperated and the residues from the combustion chamber (bottom ash) are strongly reduced in volume. However, they still form about 600 kt of waste per year in Switzerland, which needs to be landfilled. However, these residues could be potentially used as construction materials after mechanically recovering ferrous and non-ferrous metals. However, the resulting ashes (discharged dry or wet) still contain increased amount of heavy metals (exceeding state regulation) requiring them to be finally deposed on a hazardous waste site. A thermal treatment of these ashes could enable both, to separate and recuperate the remaining heavy metals and an inorganic heavy-metal poor material. "The properties of raw materials used for the production of building materials play an essential role in their choice. Industrial waste materials can in some cases improve the performance of new building materials, when compared with classical raw materials. The addition of waste can however negatively impact some of the building material´s characteristics, influencing its stability, service time, durability, and can introduce undesirable variation of certain characteristics over time. It is necessary that each secondary raw material intended for such use be thoroughly investigated in terms of its chemical, physical, and mechanical properties, with special attention paid to the risk components and risk parameters. It is necessary to make many- sided technological tests in relation to the required characteristics of the resulting materials for each chosen application. Moreover, the limit values for the critical (risk) parameters, which the given secondary raw material must satisfy to be used in a specific technology, need to be defined. Introduction The risk components in the industrial waste materials to be used in the production of building materials fall into two groups: - components that pose a risk of development (instant or delayed) of a process deleterious to the utility properties and durability of the resulting materials. Such processes include volume change (expansion as well as shrinkage), alkali-silica reaction, delayed ettringite formation, thaumassite attack, aggressive carbonation, etc. - elements or components that can, if released from the waste-containing building material, pollute the environment. They involve the so called potentially hazardous elements as well as compounds like fenols, PCB, PAHs etc. From the viewpoint of the presence of both groups of risk components, the wastes can be classified as: • environmentally inert waste materials. They are produced in the largest volumes and do not pose a threat to human health. Their physical and/or chemical characteristics fail to satisfy all requirements for utilization in ordinary production. The aim of technology design is to work them into the building products with suitable utility properties. • easier workable waste materials containing toxic components are produced in large volumes. In spite of the content of toxic components, their physical and chemical properties make them suitable for ordinary production, provided that the harmful substances are immobilized by the chosen technology."

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have recently emerged as materials with outstanding properties. This has promoted their consideration as reinforcements for other material systems, such as ceramics. However, one of the fundamental problems with producing CNT-reinforced ceramics is the effective dispersion of CNTs during processing. This has been successfully carried out recently using organic solvents. This paper is a preliminery investigation into the rheological behavior of aqueous CNT-alumina slips, with the objective of moving towards a more environmentally friendly aqueous tape casting process for the production of CNT-ceramic composites.

"In this study, the utilization capability of the solid wastes taken from a commercial roof tile and brick factory in Eskisehir of Turkiye has been investigated in the production of stoneware bodies which can be formed by slip casting. At the first stage, X-ray fluorescent (XRF) and X-ray difractometer (XRD) analyses of the wastes were performed. Depending upon the results, a body recipe with an optimum casting concentration was adjusted. The bodies obtained from prepared slips were fired at 1160 oC as glazed and unglazed forms. Then, they were undergone certain tests in order to determine their firing shrinkage values, water absorption levels and optical parameters. To establish what kind of phase formations occurred after firing as a result of waste incorporations into bodies XRD analysis was conducted. Additionally, effects of such a compositional modification on the microstructure of the bodies were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Consequently, it was concluded that fired roof tile and brick wastes could be evaluated in both glazed and unglazed stoneware bodies. Introduction Stoneware is the general name applied to many wares fired between 1150 and 1300 °C. It has a different and denser structure than those of ceramics produced at lower temperatures. Fired stoneware possesses a lower water absorption value. When matured at a high temperature, it gives a possibility for the use of feldspar as a main ingredient [1-2]. Colors of stoneware can be brown, red, white and most of the times beige. Firing usually takes place in oxidation atmosphere but also reduction can be rarely used. This naturally has an effect on the body colors [3]. Earth, which contains clay minerals, becomes plastic mud when mixed with water, has a capability to be easily shaped and can be hardened without cracking if fired at 900-1000 °C, is referred as one of the brick and tile raw materials [4]. Natural and aesthetic appearances of buildings obtained with brick and tile products, which make them preferable especially for construction sector, are of importance. Because clays being main raw material of that type of productions generally do not exist as pure materials in nature, their usability depends on their mineralogy and impurities they contain [5]."

"In recent years, the recycling magnesium metallurgy has developed new types of alloys, some of which exhibiting special electrochemical characteristics. Their application has found a fertile field in the energy conversion technologies. The paper introduces some technologic data on the recycling of aeronautical parts and scrap materials generated from the disassembling of magnesium alloy components, attempting to also solve the recycling of magnesium painted parts. The approach is meant to establish a superior quality method for recycling discarded parts or the excess of re-melting material in order to reduce environmental impact and costs. Magnesium-base alloys used as anodic materials are characterized by a high uniformity of the structural properties as well as by superior electrochemical performances, as compared to the ""classically"" used materials: Zn, Pb, etc. In nonconventional applications of magnesium alloys used as sacrificial anodes working in seawater, special alloying elements contribute to improving anodic processes. The influence of these alloying elements on magnesium sacrificial anodes was studied. It was found that the use of recycled materials in anode manufacture could reduce the Mg alloy cost by as much as up to 75% of the cost for virgin material, including the costs for the entire sequence of collection and transportation from a molding factory to a refinery, re-melting and composition adjustment.1. IntroductionMagnesium alloys are valuable materials because they exhibit low density, good forming and machining qualities, particular electrochemical properties and have a high recycling potential. There exists a false idea about the high costs of the use of magnesium alloys, partly justified by the lack of secondary materials suppliers and the insufficient knowhow in the diverse user industries to provide for an efficient substitution of conventional magnesium alloys for multipurpose applications. These circumstances have lately spurred the magnesium industry to develop new alloys and coatings and to improve processing techniques [1]. As a result, magnesium supply has greatly expanded and so have the research and development efforts to achieve complete recycling of Mg alloys.In consumer markets, magnesium is frequently selected because it helps reduce enery consumption. For example, an equal volume part made of magnesium is 23% the weight of a steel part and 64% the weight of an aluminium part."

"The shell (exoskeleton) waste of shellfish such as shrimps and crabs is the raw material in the extraction of chitosan, a polymer. Chitosan has several medicinal values such as reduction in cholesterol, urea and creatine in the blood. It is estimated that about 40000 tonnes of chitosan may be obtained from all chitin yielding invertebrate sources of India and a foreign exchange of 600 million US$ could be earned annually. Awareness has to be created among sea food processors to put up plants to convert shellfish wastes into chitosan. Similarly pharmaceutical industries may use chitosan in the development of new drugs. Types of training and awareness programmes to be organized for entrepreneurs, sea food processors and pharamacists are discussed in this paper.IntroductionIndia earns annually foreign exchange to the tune of 0.8 million US$ by exporting processed marine crustacean shellfish resources such as shrimps, crabs and lobsters (Figure 1) through 300 sea food processing industries. At present, only a small quantity of shell wastes (exoskeleton) generated from the above is utilized as an ingredient in fish feeds and hence much of the wastes are disposed off either as land fill or by direct dumping in sea. "The disposal of spent hydroprocessing (HDP) catalysts in the petroleum refining industry has been a concern in the past due to their classification as listed hazardous wastes. However, because these catalysts have higher metal concentrations than regular ores, and the recent surge in prices for molybdenum, vanadium, nickel and cobalt what used to be considered as a liability for generators is now viewed as a valuable renewable source of strategic metals. At the same time the generation of spent catalysts has steadily risen due to new environmental regulations for low sulfur fuels and an increased appetite of gasoline consumers. This paper will examine spent catalyst market and the role played by Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corporation in the reclamation of metals over the last sixty years. Introduction Hydroprocessing (HDP) catalysts are used in petroleum refineries for two main applications: desulfurization and cracking. The catalyst support is alumina or mixtures of alumina and silica. Active metals include molybdenum, nickel, cobalt and tungsten. The selection of catalysts depends on the application and sometimes the cost. The life cycle of HDP catalysts is represented in Figure 1. The catalyst cycle in a reactor varies from continuous to one-two years. Catalysts used in various refining processes are deactivated by coke, sulfur, vanadium and other impurities in the refinery feedstocks and become spent. Refineries can optionally send the spent catalysts for regeneration, metals reclamation or landfilling. Catalysts used for refining heavy crudes often can not be regenerated. Catalysts used with light oils can be reused twice or three times after regeneration. When the option for regeneration is not viable, spent catalysts are send metal reclamation facilities or landfills."

The synthesis of titanium diboride (TiB2) by carbothermal reductions of TiO2 and B2O3 was investigated. For this aim, TiO2, B2O3 and carbon black powders were dried, weighed out and mixed in stoichiometric molar proportions (TiO2:B2O3:C = 1:1:5). The experiments were carried out in a graphite resistance furnace in argon media using different range of temperature (1400- 1700 °C) and time (0 and 15 min). The phase analyses observation of the products were examined by using XRD.
