"Al drops and gas bubbles in the anode-cathode space of aluminum electrolysis cell are of great importance for cell operation improvement in metal loss, current efficiency and energy consumption. A direct observation on the Al drop, gas bubble and ultrasound was carried out through a see-through cell. The Al drop immersed into the cryolitic melt was found moving up and down irregularly in the anode-cathode space without electrolysis, which was then completely dissolved into the melt. During electrolysis, the Al drop came to the anode area and reacted with the gas bubbles generated on the anode. Under ultrasound, the gas bubbles were removed from the anode surface while the Al drop was kept on the side of anode. The observed phenomena were useful for technology improvement in reducing the anode-cathode distance or lowering the energy consumption in aluminum electrolysis.IntroductionDuring aluminum electrolysis, aluminum metal drop and anodic gas bubble are in close contact each other within the anode-cathode space, and the interaction between them can produce significant impact on metal loss, current efficiency and energy consumption. The motions of the Al drop and the gas bubble are also related to the dissolution of aluminum metal into cryolitic melt and the cell voltage drop due to the bubble layer covering the anode surface.A number of studies have been carried out using different types of see-through cells, where the dissolving process of metal Al into cryolitic melts (metal fog) in the anode-cathode space was directly observed and photographed [1, 2]. With the similar method, some direct observations on the anodic bubble behaviors with and without ultrasound were performed during aluminum electrolysis [3-6]. However, to our best knowledge, there is no published work on direct observation on the behavior of Al drops and anodic gas bubbles staying together within the same anode-cathode space, as well as the motion and interaction of them in cryolite-alumina melts."

"Fine manganese fines are characterized by large amount and low price compared to lump manganese ores. However, fine manganese must be agglomerated as EAF (electric arc furnace) feed. In this paper, high quality fired pellets were produced by simulating grate-kiln process to supply the feed for EAF from some imported manganese ore fines containing high combined water. Manganese ore fines assaying 44.47wt%Mn, 5.89wt%Fe, 12.09%LOI and with 72.7wt% ranging between 0.5mm and 8mm, are pretreated up to the particle size of 84.7wt% passing 0.074mm by HPGR (high press grinding roller) twice in open circuit. The finely ground manganese fines were mixed with 1.2wt% bentonite, balled at 15% moisture for 7min in disc pelletizer. The drop numbers, compressive strength and thermal shock temperature of green balls reach 11 times/0.5m, 11 N/pellet and 360oC, respectively. After the green balls drying in the oven, the dry pellets were preheated at 1050oC for 12 min and then fired at 1300oC for 12 min in electric tube furnace. The compressive strength of fired pellets reaches 2621 N/pellet. Therefore, these pellets are high quality burden for blast furnace or EAF due to high mechanical strength and high Mn grade of 49.11wt% and low detrimental elements.IntroductionManganese, mainly using as deoxidizing agent, desulfurization agent and alloying elements, is widely used in the steel company. With the rapid development of iron and steel industry in China, domestic manganese ores cannot meet the requirement, resulting large quantities manganese ores import to China [1-4]. Compared to lump manganese ores, fine manganese ores containing high combined water are characterized by large amount and low price. However, they must be agglomerated as EAF (electric arc furnace) feed. There are three ways to agglomerate the manganese fine ores, sintering, briquetting and pelletizing [5-6]. Compared to the other two methods, pelletizing technology possesses the following superiorities, such as uniform size distribution of product, stabilizing chemical composition of product and lower energy consumption in producing. Therefore, pelletizing is a superior way to treat the fine manganese ores [7]. The systematic research of producing manganese oxide pellets by fine manganese ores containing high combined water was studied in this paper."

"During the motion of molten metal under external non-homogeneous magnetic field the induced electric currents produce Lorentz body forces in the opposite direction to the flow, causing deformation of velocity profile, vortical structures, and adding a pressure drop across the magnetic field. The same Lorentz force acts on the magnet system. We analyse these phenomena in metallurgy, namely, at molten metal pumping, stirring, continuous casting, and in contactless Lorentz force flowmeter (LFF). Experiments with liquid metal alloy, including direct measurements of Lorentz forces, velocities, and flow structure visualization were conducted. Based on this study the industrial prototypes of LFF systems were designed, built, and tested in a secondary aluminium production. A molten metal flow at high temperature (700°C-850°C) can be effectively measured. The LFF technique method allows measuring precisely the volumetric and mass flow rates linked with Lorentz force, and the mass accumulated within production process.IntroductionThe present work demonstrates the development of a non-contact electromagnetic system for measurement of a liquid metal flow. Our approach embodies the Lorentz force velocimetry [1-6] technique which is physically based on a measurement of the force acting on an external magnet system the field of which interacts with the flow. This force is exactly equal to the braking Lorentz force induced in a flowing conducting fluid. In what follows a measurement system based on the Lorentz force velocimetry principle. For monitoring and controlling the production process it is desirable to measure continuously the mean velocity of the liquid metal in order to deduce the mass-flux and volume-flux from it. The form and dimensions of the magnet system are in agreement with geometry of the operating channel. We consider here a version of magnet systems in a composition of permanent magnets.The LFF possesses a number of advantages which make it attractive for the measurement of flows in hot and aggressive melts. The relation between the measured force and the desired volumetric flow rate is often linear (for closed channel or at a constant liquid metal level in open channel). For the converting of the measured force into volumetric and mass flow rate we should know the calibration factor. The calibration factor is independent of the viscosity and density of the liquid metal and depends only on the magnetic field magnitude, the electrical conductivity of the liquid metal and the geometry of the channel in which the liquid metal flows. In aluminium production, for instance, there exists a number of standard alloy compositions having welldefined conductivities for which the calibration factors can thus be tabulated. We consider below consistently effects in liquid metals arising under influencing magnetic field, construction principle of LFF and measurements of metal flows at industrial conditions."

"Both composition and porosity of pellets are the main parameters influencing the reductive melting process in water-jacket furnace during the roasting of sulfide lead concentrate. Roasting in a smelter located in Trepçë is done at about 9000C, for pellets which are composed of PbS, CaCO3, Fe2O3, and SiO2. In order to faciltiate the formation of slag in the reductive melting, the pellets must have the proper content of CaO, SiO2, and FeO, and porosity. The plant’s practice indicates that pellets with porosity of 18% do not melt adequately in the water-jacket furnace. The optimum porosity for the proper melting of pellets needs to be 32-40% and can be achieved when pellets are loaded with more than 10 wt.% CaO. Pellets with less than 10% CaO have a limited network of pores, such that reactive gases cannot reach the entire ore structure. Also, the composition of the pellets must satisfy the ratio of CaO : SiO2 : FeO = 1 : 1.2 : 1.8 to facilitate the formation of slag in the reductive melting process.IntroductionAgglomeration roasting of sulfide lead concentrate is an important phase in the production of lead by reductive melting [1-6]. The reductive melting process is a complex process with contradictory effects of several technological indexes which many times are hard to measure and determine. In this process, loading the water-jacket furnace with pellets of optimized composition and structure can reduce the consumption of coke, and achieve high level of lead recovery. "Large reserves of specularite iron ores have been found all over the world, which is characterized by high total iron grade, low gangues content, as well as low commercial price. However, it has not been widely used in sinter or pellet production due to its inferior sintering and roasting behaviors. It has shown that the proportion of specularite ores was increased as high as 40%~50% and good results was achieveed by using Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP), an innovative agglomeration process invented by Central South University. But the mineralization of specularite is still unknown during composite agglomeration processing. In this paper, the induration characteristic of specularite ore is studied by simulating CAP in laboratory, as well as microstructure analysis of CAP product. The results show that specularite pellet is mainly indurated through recrystallization of Fe2O3, calcium ferrite within high basicity sinters matrix interweaves with the recrystallized Fe2O3 on the surface of the pellet, which forms an integral microstructure, and ensures high strength of CAP product for ironmaking.IntroductionLarge reserves of specularite iron ores have been found all over the world, especially in Minas Gerais of Brazil, Xuanhua city and Anshan city of China, Elba island of Italy, St.Gotthard of Switzerland, Cumberland of Britannic, and so on. The specularite ores have a smooth surface, as well as a good crystallization and dense texture. When specularite is used to produce pellets, the specularite ore grains are difficult to adhere onto green ball due to its poor ballability. Moreover, specularite pellet requires high roasting temperature over 1300°C [1]. When specularite ore is used in sintering, the permeability of sintering bed gets bad and the quality of sinter is diminished. The practice in a few sintering plants finds that the output and strength of sinter decrease with the increase of specularite proportion, and the consumption of coke increases [2-4]. Therefore, the utilization of specularite has been limited. Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP) is an innovative technology invented by Central South University [5-7]. The process has the following merits: making reasonable utilization of different iron ore resources; improving the quality and output of sinters; manufacturing sinters with low basicity; significantly reducing energy consumption, etc[8-9]. It has been shown that large proportion specularite ores, as high as 40%~50% can be used well by CAP [10], but the mineralization of specularite pellet is still unknown during composite agglomeration processing. In this investigation, the induration characteristics of specularite ore pellets is studied by simulating CAP in laboratory, and the phase composition and microstructure of CAP product are also characterized by using microscope and Leica image analyzer (Germany, Leica DM RXp)."

"1 AbstractThe production of alumina from bauxite using the Bayer process generates 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. This material has no large scale current use and is usually stored. This paper shows that it can be used in a suspension with water as a gas effluent cleaner with high efficiency to remove SO2. It can substitute other materials currently used reducing the overall environmental impact and potentially reducing the cost of gas treatment.2 IntroductionThe production of millions of tons per year of alumina around the world generates from 0.7 to 2.0 ton of the residue known as red mud per ton of alumina. The vast majority of the red mud is stored in large sealed lakes. Due to the high reactivity this material is considered dangerous and currently there is no operating process capable of reuse all the material produced at any refinery. These lakes after filled of solid material eventually have the surface revegetated. In any cases they will remain as an environmental passive and need monitoring for decades. The search of industrial processes that combine the cleaning of gas effluents emission and reuse of these residues can contribute to the reduction of the overall impact of the alumina production process.The main objective of this work is to study the efficiency of the red mud as alternative raw material for the control of emissions of SO2 in combustion gases. Usually this is made through alkaline solutions of CaCO3 or NaOH in absorbing equipments like spray towers or packed column. This project main objective is to study the reaction of the SO2 with a suspension of red mud and water in order to obtain the basic parameters to design equipment capable of process this reaction on a pilot scale. With that goal compositions of red mud on spray were processed with flow of gas containing SO2 with concentration similar to the exhaust gases of the combustion process of the refineries."

"Abstract: In this work, low temperature carbothermic reduction of Panzhihua low grade ilmenite after ball milling were investigated. The ball milling of ilmenite and graphite were processed in a ball mill. The milling process can attenuate the particle of ilmenite, and the ilmenite characteristic peak were broadened and weakened. The reduction temperature and behaviors are studied on the thermo gravimetric apparatus; lower temperature and higher reaction rate were obtained for the reduction of ilmenite with graphite after milled. The reduction temperature and times of ilmenite decreased to 1000-1025°C and 40-60min via milled for 4 or 8h; Low down the reduction temperature can eliminate the solution of Mg2+ and FeTi03 in a certain degree; the reduced ilmenite has an obvious loose structure, can favored the subsequent procedure such as leaching.1 IntroductionThere is about 9.66 billion tons of Vanadic Titan-magnetite deposited in Panzhihua, China. In this reserve, there is about 8.73x108 t ofTi02, Accounting for 90.54% of the Chinese reserves, and 35.17% of the international reserves and ranking first in the world. [JJ Titanium mineral deposits major classified into Rock type and Placer type. Rock type is the igneous mineral, which have great content of FeO (Relative to Fe20 3) and gangue. The rock textures are compact and almost are complex ore. Rock type Titanium mineral major are ilmenite and titan magnetite ore, difficult to separate the metal ore and gangue. l.21 Thus, the Ti02 grade of Rock type ilmenite much lower than the Placer type (Table land 11). Panzhihua ilmenite are the typical Rock-type, due to the higher contents of MgO, CaO and Si02 and the complex mineralogy in ilmenite in Panzhihua region, making its direct reduction progressively more difficult. Mechanical activation, usually carried out by energetic milling or ball milling, was reported to significantly decreased the reduction temperature and accelerate the reaction rate of reduction of ilmenite with carbon, silicon and Magnesium. f3·(>J It reported that the process temperature were decreased to 600-1000°C and the annealing time were reduced to 30-120min after milled for 50-400 h. Shorter milling time involved was imported for else procedure such as direct leaching. 171 Hardly any research had referred to the carbothermic reduction reactivity of ilmeite milled for a short time as 1-1 Oh. In the present work, the aim is to investigate the reactivity and reaction temperature of carbothermic reduction of Panzhihua ilmenite. The Phase composition and micro morphology of samples are characterized."

"The enrichment behavior of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag was studied by making an investigation on the distribution of phosphorous content in slag and 2CaO·SiO2 phase. The research results showed that the existing 2CaO·SiO2 solid particles in slag were the sites for the phosphorous enrichment. The enrichment process of phosphorus in CaO-SiO2-FeOx-P2O5 slag can be recognized as: mass transfer of phosphorus from bulk slag toward the surface of 2CaO·SiO2 particle, superficial dissolution reaction of phosphorus to 2CaO·SiO2 and diffusion of phosphorus through the product layer of 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O5 solid solution to the inner of 2CaO·SiO2 particle. Compared to the 2CaO·SiO2 particles with larger size (500µm to 1000µm), the completion time of enrichment was shorter for the particles with smaller size (less than 50µm).IntroductionDuring ironmaking and steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Contrast to the high utilization of ironmaking slag, the treatment of steelmaking slag is more difficult and challengeable, and therefore, an alternative approach is to recycle the steelmaking slag inside the ironmaking and steelmaking process itself. The main limitation to the reuse of steelmaking slag inside the process is that the refining process may be aggravated caused by the phosphorous accumulation if it is used in the blast furnace burden [1]. At the same time, the phosphorous content of steelmaking slag (approximately 1%~5% P2O5) is too low for it to be used as raw material for fertilizer [2, 3]. Moreover, owing to the diminishing supply of global iron ores with low phosphorous content, the control of phosphorus in iron and steelmaking processes has become an increasing problem, and as a result, more amounts of high phosphorus containing steelmaking slag are produced. Therefore, a valuable approach is quite appreciated in which the steelmaking slag is recycled within the ironmaking and steelmaking process and at the same time, the high phosphorus-containing phases in the steelmaking slag, suitable for use as fertilizer can be separated and recycled effectively [4]."

"The dissolution kinetics of steelmaking slag in pure water was studied, and the relative influential factors were investigated. The dissolution behavior of slag particles in water was well described by Noyes–Whitney equation, and for this kind of sparingly soluble rigid mineral this simple model was extensively applicable to describe their dissolution process. Experimental data were also obtained to confirm the significant promotion effect on the growth of some algae.1 . IntroductionIt has been found that the population of phytoplankton distributed in the ocean was significantly related to the concentration of some elements [1]. For example, silicon and iron were very low in the high-nitrate low-chlorophyll (HNLC) areas, which was the main factor limiting phytoplankton and other biomass growth in these open ocean surface water [7]. The silicon and iron-rich test also confirmed that the supply of these elements had the direct effect on the growth of phytoplankton processes at HNLC areas [2-8]. So in order to promote the growth of phytoplankton in these ocean areas, providing some of these elements into these ocean areas is a natural idea for choice. Steelmaking slag is a good resource for consideration because it usually contains silicon, iron, phosphorus and other elements that are necessary for the growth of phytoplankton [8-10].Haraguchi has proposed the following idea that [5-6], if steelmaking slag can be spread to the open ocean, the trace components like silicate, iron and phosphate as the indispensable nutrients for the growth of phytoplankton, will be leached into the sea water, not only promoting the growth of phytoplankton, but also making good use of these huge amount of steelmaking slag produced every year. Based on this idea, they have carried out studies in recent years and they found that silicon and iron in the slag could be extracted into seawater effectively and play a positive role in the growth process of many algae. About the dissolution of the steelmaking slag, the Japanese scholars' research work mainly focused on the thermodynamic analysis of its dissolution possibility, and in the process of dissolution they tried to adjust the pH value of the seawater by continuously adding hydrochloric acid, which was deviated from the natural conditions of dissolution, and so the laws drawn under these special conditions can not give the identical guide to the practical application. Therefore, it is quite necessary to investigate the dissolution behavior of the steelmaking slag in the seawater at the normal pH range without adjustment to simulate the dissolution possibility under the natural conditions. In the present study, the silicon extraction behavior from the steelmaking slag was investigated and the dissolution kinetics in this process was also discussed in detail. Further studies were also performed here to evaluate the promotion of steelmaking slag on the growth of algae."

"The disposal of wastes is a serious environmental problem, since available landfill space is dwindling. Their treatment by pyrolysis or combustion has merit, and the corresponding fuel or power production is of technological interest. However, such processes need a rigid control of emissions. This work addresses the gaseous light hydrocarbons (LHCs) generated during sequential pyrolysis and partial oxidation of unserviceable tires, PET bottles, com wastes (DDGS) and sugarcane bagasse in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace, kept at 1000 °C. Gas chromatography was used to identify and quantify the components of the emitted gaseous light hydrocarbons. The results showed that the biomass residues generated the highest emissions of aliphatic hydrocarbons, whereas PET generated the most aromatic hydrocarbons. When stainless steel meshes were inserted in the exhaust flow, it was found that hydrocarbon emissions were curtailed; as such meshes catalyzed partial conversion of these carbon-bearing gases to carbonaceous nanomaterials.IntroductionLight hydrocarbons (LHCs) are volatile organic compounds, consisting of hydrogen and carbon with low molecular weight; the most common species are methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. LHCs are valuable since they are a very important energy resource. However, uncontrolled release of light hydrocarbon gases to the atmosphere should be avoided [l, 2]. In this work, a development is presented for the evaluation of LHCs generated during the controlled pyrolysis/combustion of several wastes in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Samples of unserviceable tires, post-consumer PET bottles and waste residues from the bioethanol industry (DDGS and sugarcane bagasse) were burned. A catalyst system, consisting of stainless steel screens, was tested for its effects on the gaseous emissions."

"Recovery of uranium from the Mk-IV and Mk-V electrorefiner vessels containing a LiCl/KCl eutectic salt has been on-going during the pyrometallurgical processing of used nuclear fuel for 14 and 12 years, respectively. Although austenitic stainless steels are typically utilized for LiCl/KCl salt systems, the presence of cadmium in the Mk-IV electrorefiner dictates an alternate material. A 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy (ASME SA-387) was chosen due to the absence of nickel in the alloy which has a considerable solubility in cadmium. Using the transition metal impurities (iron, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and manganese) in the electrorefined uranium products, an algorithm was developed to derive values for the contribution of the transition metals from the various input sources. Weight loss and corrosion rate data for the Mk-V electrorefiner vessel were then generated based on the transition metal impurities in the uranium products. To date, the corrosion rate of the 2.25Cr-1Mo alloy in LiCl/KCl eutectic is ""outstanding"" assuming uniform (i.e. non-localized) conditions.IntroductionLow-enriched uranium products are being recovered from the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) and Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) used nuclear fuels by a pyrometallurgical treatment process at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The treatment process comprises a set of operations designed to neutralize bond sodium, recover uranium from radioactive fission products, and place the fission products into acceptable waste forms [1-2]. Reactive sodium metal, essential for heat transfer purposes during reactor operations, is readily converted to chloride during the process. Electrorefined uranium products are currently being stored pending a final disposition decision. Treatment of the EBR-II used driver fuel was initiated in June 1996 while blanket fuel processing started in September 1998. These treatment processes continue on the balance of the used fuels."

"As a main impurity in primary lithium metal, magnesium is difficult to remove because of the very close relative volatility of the two metals. Electrochemical refining provides a possibility to completely remove Mg in the LiCl-KCl melt prior to Li reduction. MgCl2 reduction processes in LiCl-KCl- MgCl2 melt were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), chronoamperometry and chronopotentiometry. Then potentiostatic electrolysis was carried out and Mg (II) ion was reduced onto a liquid lead cathode from the LiCl-KCl-MgCl2 melt at the Mg deposition potential. The results show that Mg ( II ) is reduced in one step with two-electron transfer. The reduction potential of Mg ( II ) was well defined. The reduction of Mg( II) results in Li ( I ) underpotential deposition at 0.2V more negative potential than that of Mg( II) reduction. Therefore, in order to prevent Li ( I ) from codeposition with Mg, accurately controlling Mg ( II) reduction potential during the potentiostatic electrolysis was necessary. Ninety three to 99 % removal rate of MgCl2 was achieved after 8-12 h electrolysis when liquid lead was used as cathode.IntroductionMetallic Li has been widely used in batteries, light weight alloys and in fusion reactors because of its excellent properties. Currently, the only way in industry to produce metallic Li is by electrowinning from molten LiCl-KCl at about 450 °C [l-5]. LiCl-KCl is the only electrolyte used, because they presents a lower eutectic temperature and KCl shows a slightly higher theoretical decomposition voltage than LiCl, as shown in Table l .The produced metallic Li generally contains 1-2 wt% impurities including Na, K, Al, Ca, Mg, Si, etc. [6l, which are derived from the corresponding metal chloride compounds or metal oxide compounds existing in the LiCl and/or KCl raw materials. These impurities have to be removed by subsequent vacuum distillation at high temperatures to meet the requirements for metal Li purity in the final products. Separation of Mg from Li by vacuum distillation is difficult because their relative volatilities are very close, as shown in Table 2."

"Extracting boric acid from saline brine by boron specific ion-exchange resin was investigated. Effects of resin amount, temperature, time and stirring speed on boron adsorption rate were studied in the experiments. The results indicated that the XSC-700 resin showed excellent boron absorbability and it performed better property for elution. The maximum boron adsorption capacity was 6.16 mg/ml in the optimum conditions: the resin concentration of 5 ml/(100 ml brine), the temperature of 60°C, the time of 5-6h and the stirring speed of 100 r/min. Boron was eluted from the resin with HCl and boric acid was crystallized by evaporating the eluate. The product of boric acid was in pure form as confirmed by XRD and other analysis techniques.1 IntroductionBoron has a number of minerals in nature such as tincal, colemanite, ulexite, and kemite, etc. [1-2]. Boron and its compounds are chemical materials of significant value. The principal industrial uses of boron compounds are in the production of glass, porcelain, enamels and detergents. Other uses include fertilizers, metallurgy, and nuclear shielding [3-4]. In recent years, because of the large-scale mining boron ore, ore resources are drained gradually. With the development of science and technology, the boron mineral resources will be unsatisfied with the future requirement. There exits abundant boron resources in salt lakes which cover about 40% of the total reserves in China. If we can obtain boron from salt lakes, it will produce great economic interests [5-6]. Therefore, actively seeking boron from salt lake and other resources in suitable conditions has become a hot spot in the research organizations of boron resources development and utilization in the world [7].There are many methods such as acid crystallization, solvent extraction and ion exchange processes suggested effective for boron extraction from aqueous solutions. Acid crystallization method has the shortcomings of complicated procedures, the pollution caused by hydrochloric and other ingredients returning to salt lakes during the extraction process. "The reaction between zirconia/zircon, coke, and chlorine involves a slow reaction between the coke and the zirconia/zircon and a fast reaction with chlorine. Because of the fast chlorine reaction, the reaction rate for zirconia/zircon is nearly independent of chlorine concentration for most conditions. The reaction between zirconia/zircon and coke is particle size controlled and related to the degree of physical contact between the zirconia/zircon and the coke. Since particle-particle contact is critical, compaction of finely ground coke and zirconia/zircon produces the highest reaction rates. Uncompacted, coarse coke and zirconia/zircon has the slowest reaction behavior with static bed tests.SummaryZirconia reacts with chlorine in the presence of carbon to form zirconium tetrachloride, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. A similar reaction occurs with zirconium silicate with the additional formation of silicon tetrachloride. The reaction rate depends primarily on temperature and the intimacy of contact between the zirconia and the coke. The reaction is multi-stepped with a slow reaction between coke and zirconia to form an intermediate that reacts rapidly with chlorine, causing the order of the reaction for chlorine to be near zero. Chlorination rates in the range of 1 µmole/hr/cm2 are seen for fluid bed reactors. Plug flow, and static bed reactors have reaction rates of the order of 1 mmole/hr/cm2, where the area is based on the zircon surface area in plug flow and fluid bed reactors and the boat cross sectional area in a static bed. Chlorination rates measured in zirconia/coke briquettes are higher with rates as high as 400 mmole/hr/cm2 reported. High chlorine diffusion resistance, not accounted for in the analysis of experimental results, has led to a lot of confusion in the literature interpretation of chlorination data.In general coke and zirconia/zircon particle size, coke and zirconia/zircon intimacy, coke to zirconia/zircon ratio, chlorine concentration, and temperature are important variables for chlorination. Decreasing the coke and zirconia/zircon particle size generally increase the reaction rate. The coke to zirconia/zircon ratio affects the reaction in a more complex way. Increasing the chlorine concentration generally increases the reaction rate, but the effect appears to be more related to the concentration dependency of diffusion than to its role in the kinetics. The reaction rate increases with temperature but the exact behavior is complicated by temperature effects on diffusion."

"Bismuth is an impurity in copper minerals where it occurs mainly as the mineral bismuthinite (Bi2S3). In smelting of copper minerals, most of the bismuth reports to the white metal, as a result, a substantial amount of bismuth accompanies the copper to the electrorefined cathodes. Thus understanding the behavior of Bi2S3 at high temperatures is crucial to eliminate bismuth before electrorefining. In this paper, some experimental data on the decomposition/volatilization of bismuthinite in nitrogen- oxygen atmospheres is discussed. The results indicated that in nitrogen atmosphere, bismuth volatilization occurs through a fast decomposition of bismuthinite to metallic bismuth and sulfur with subsequent volatilization of bismuth in the range 850-1100 °C. Similarly, in the presence of oxygen, bismuthinite decomposes to bismuth too, followed by oxidation to the non-volatile bismuth trioxide at temperatures higher than 750 °C. Both, temperature and partial pressure of oxygen affect significantly the bismuth volatilization and the oxidation rates.IntroductionCopper sulfide minerals are the major source for the production of metallic copper by pyrometallurgical processes, which are the dominant processes in the production of copper by selectively oxidizing the sulfide sulfur to SO2 and the accompanying iron in the concentrates to iron oxide, which can be conveniently removed as a stable slag.Generally, copper concentrates contain some deleterious minor elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth and lead, which are present as sulfides. These elements depending on their concentration may originate problems in the copper smelting processes and they can ultimately lead to a final copper product with unacceptable high levels of impurities.During the treatment of these copper concentrates by smelting, the impurities generally distribute themselves in the condensed and gas phases and they are eliminated mainly through the gas phase [1-3]. Thus, smelter off gases contains substantial amounts of volatilized impurity elements. For example, in the case of bismuth, the estimated distribution of bismuth in flash furnace smelting [2] was 15 % in the matte, 5 % in the slag and 80 % in the gas phase, and recently, for Outokumpu flash smelting Davenport [3] reported the distribution of bismuth as 30-75% in matte, 5-30% in slag and 15 -65 % in the off gas."

"Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valid environmental evaluation method and enterprise environmental management tool used in industrial ecology areas. In this paper LCA was newly used to evaluate the environmental impact of manufacturing of alumina by Bayer process in china from two aspects of logistics and energy flow, GaBi software acted as analysis tools with evaluation model established, and several environmental impact assessment criteria were selected based on the actually typical date of Bayer alumina producing process. Evaluation results show that alumina manufacturing by the Bayer process has a great impact on the global warming and human health of respiration, even roasting process gives rise to the greatest impact of winter fog index. Scenario analysis proposed ways of reducing environmental load caused by Bayer process including: (1) the economic and efficient use of mineral processing technology; (2) optimization of energy use, saving power consumption or the use of new more economical source of energy; (3) actively promote the use of innovated technology and equipment in alumina manufacturing and waste such as red mud utilization process.1 IntroductionSince 2002, China is already the world's biggest producer of aluminium, in 2007, China aluminum production has accounted for above 1/3 all over the world, 2009 for 13 million tons and to the end of 2010, China aluminum production is expected increased to be over 15 million ton [1,2,3]. While as the raw material for producing aluminum the alumina production in china has up to 19.46 million tons of the world's total quarter in 2007, by the end of 2009 China alumina production has achieve to 23.78 million tons [4,5]. China has rich bauxite resources with proven reserves about 23 million tons, but the great majority of china bauxite is hard monohydrate diaspore type with low ratio of aluminium silicon, high impurity content and poor aluminum dissolution performance, that cause high energy consumption, long and complex process, high production costs and heavy environment load[6,7]. Before most used alumina production was sintering process rather than Bayer method in china, over the past decade Bayer method has been widely applied instead of sintering process or combination both forming joint process, premise is improving bauxite quality by mineral processing or adding imported rich bauxite mineral[6,8]. In general each ton production of alumina needs bauxite 1.6~2.20t, limestone 0.7~1.7t, soda 0.250kg, fresh water 12.30 cubic meters, in addition to consume large amounts of energy, and emission waste water over 8.0 cubic meters, dust 2.3~5.7 kg, red mud 0.8-1.5 tons. In china Red mud yield nearly 30.0 million tons every year, accumulated stock is approximately 0.2 billion tons, by 2015 accumulative total red mud is expected to reach 0.35 billion tons [9-13].We know aluminium industry and alumina production have produced large waste, make large energy consumption and its environmental impact could not be ignored. Expecting to optimize production processes and achieve resource recycling for this industrial process the proper environmental assessment is very necessary. Currently Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is generally recognized as the approved tool to achieve the purpose. The essence of LCA tool is to examine, identify and evaluate a kind of materials, product, process, or a system of environmental impact in their whole life cycle. The life cycle of materials or products includes whole process from raw materials obtained to the final disposal, or more ideal with original or other forms of the whole process of recycling [14-17]."

"The use of the up-to date light alloys and their development are in the sharp ascent especially in transportation industry. In the last years the use of the magnesium alloys for the various purposes was strongly increased. The aim of present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability and on obtained mechanical properties of AM60 magnesium alloy. The study was also focused on possibility to omit prior homogenisation process which would result in cost reduction. The solidification of gravity cast alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis: in situ simple thermal analysis and simultaneous thermal analysis. In order to reveal optimal hot working conditions the deformation behaviour was studied in the temperature range 200-450°C and strain rates between 0.001-lOs-1. Mechanical properties have been studied with tensile and impact toughness testing.IntroductionIn recent years, the increased demand for magnesium alloys has been mainly driven by the need of automotive and transportation industry to reduce the weight, as this is the most important parameter to reduce the energy consumption. Beside their very low weight in comparison to other metals, the magnesium alloys are characterized by good machinability, corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, and can thus compete with aluminium alloys and for some applications even with steels. Due their decreased workabilty they are typically used as cast alloys, but in recent years also the research of their wrought state has become more extensive [1-7]. Decreased hot workability of magnesium alloys originates from their hexagonal close-packed structure. One of the most popular magnesium alloys with great potential for many applications is AM60 (MgA16Mn), which is predominately used for casting. But its application could be increased if the mechanical properties, could be improved. This can be done by hot working. Namely it is well known that wrought microstructure is characterized by better mechanical properties in comparison to as-cast state. On the other hand due to its low hot workability the homogenization process is required prior hot deformation, which results in increased production costs. Thus the aim of the present research was to study the influence of solidification rate on hot workability of AM60 alloy in order to improve its mechanical properties and to check the possibility of producing near-net-shape casting products omitting homogenisation process by employing small additional deformations after casting. Within the framework of this research the solidification of gravity cast AM60 alloy has been investigated with various methods of the thermal analysis."

"The mode of occurrence of sulfur and mercury in 57 Chinese bituminous coals have been examined using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Zeeman atomic absorption mercury spectrometer. Mercury levels in coal are related to the geographic location of the coals and types of the coals. A synthesis of result indicated that most likely occurrence modes of mercury in high-sulfur and high-mercury coals are in solid solution in pyrite. Our study from 57 coal samples showed that most values of mercury concentration in coal varied from 100 to 1000 ng/g with an average of approximately 500ng/g, and mathematical model about correlation between mercury and sulfur was gained by mathematical statistics. This is apparent that mercury and sulfur vary concomitantly from coal data (table 3) , the high correlation between them in all coals at confidence of 95% ( a=0.05 ) .1. INTRODUCTIONThere contained about one trillion ton abundant coal resources in China. As a leading level of proven coal reserves in the world, the coals mainly distributed in north China and northwest China, especially in Shanxi, Guizhou, Shanxi provinces and Inner-Mongolia autonomous region. At the same time, China has the largest production and consumption of coal, and has the output of coal nearly accounted for 37 percent of the world's production. Coal-fired power plants are the major source of energy generation in China, and the proportion of coal combustion is up to 75 percent in the total energy configuration. Therefore, the mercury pollution caused by coal-fired has become a topic of wide-spread discussions since 1990. The contamination of mercury of human activities accounted for 10 to 30 percent [1], and the mercury emissions of coal-fired flue gas has made the greatest contribution to the pollution of atmosphere[2] In the past 30 years, the global increasing concentration of mercury pollutant in atmosphere maybe result from coal combustion[2]. The mercury emissions caused by coal-burning has become the main reason of China's mercury pollution, and the characteristics of mercury pollution is closely related to China's energy configuration, additionally, the features of mercury pollution have changed from the point pollution in 1970's to diffused pollution today[3]. Mercury can be found in various types of coals, and it is evaporated into gas phase during the combustion process."

"The present work investigated the influence of Fe+2 initial concentrations in the bioleaching of copper from printed circuit board using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR. Printed circuit boards were collected from obsolete computers and mechanically processed through size reduction followed by magnetic separation. The bacteria Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR were grown and adapted in presence of printed circuit boards. A shake flask study was carried out on the printed circuit boards samples (non-magnetic fraction) using a rotary shaker under the following fixed conditions (185 rpm, 30°C). The bioleaching efficiency was evaluated by comparison between the concentration in the initial sample and in the leached liquor, pH of the medium and concentration of ferrous iron produced. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (1CP-OES) was used to determine the metals concentration. The results showed that Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans-LR leached 63% copper from printed circuit boards using supplemented medium with Fe+2.IntroductionThe waste of electric and electronic equipment is generated by discarding of equipment such as obsolete computers and cell phones which is stimulated by the technology innovations and it has been growing each year. Because of the amount that has been accumulated it has become a prominent environmental problem but also can be a source of valuable materials, such precious and base metals [1,2] The printed circuit boards are found in almost all electric and electronic equipment being composed of polymers, ceramics and metals and can be an alternative source to recover base and precious metals. The precious metals are used in the printed circuit boards to protect against oxidation and base metals because of its conducting properties [3]. The heterogeneous composition of printed circuit board is a limiting factor in the recycling processes and the metals concentrations also range."

"Vanukov furnace technology is an efficient, proven pyrometallurgical injection technology, used extensively in Russia and Kazakhstan for a number of different applications. The technology was most widely adopted for processing copper sulfide concentrates for matte in smelters in Norilsk, Revda (Russia) and Balkhash (Kazakhstan). The following applications also were developed and tested at industrial scale: treatment of sulfide lead and lead-zinc concentrates, laterite nickel ore, production of cast iron, treatment of antimony gold-containing ores, and municipal solid waste. In this paper, current experience of Vanukov furnace application to these technologies is described with a number of general development trends and new areas of application.IntroductionAt the present time, the Vanukov process, developed at the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys at the Department of metallurgy of non-ferrous, rare and noble metals with collaboration with other research organizations, is a highly efficient technological solution for processing different kinds of raw materials. The process was invented by Professor Andrey Vladimirovich Vanukov, whose research work began in 1949. From 1956 to 1975 test runs of the technology were carried out at the smelters in Norilsk and Balkhash. In 1976 a pilot Vanukov furnace was built in Ryazan. Furnace designs was modified to suit the various test programs. A major objective of each experiment was the determination of optimal working conditions for processing different types of raw materials such as copper, copper-nickel, copper-zinc, lead or pyrite concentrates, and materials containing secondary lead and zinc. After the death of Andrey Vladimirovich Vanukov in 1986, this technology and furnaces based on the technology were named after him: “Vanukov process” and “Vanukov furnace”. Today, the following furnaces based on Vanukov technology are either working or were tested at semi-industrial scale: three in Norilsk, two in Revda (Russia) and two in Balkhash (Kazakhstan) for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates for matte, one in Orsk (Russia) for processing laterite nickel ore, one in the Buruktal plant (Russia) for antimony gold-containing ores for antimony oxide sublimates and gold-containing metallic antimony, and one in China for processing sulfide lead and lead-zinc concentrates for production of black lead and zinc-containing sublimates."
