Though production began in Canada only a short time after the discovery of oil in the United States, it has never attained large proportions, and if we were to judge entirely by the past the reserves of Canada would be put at a very low figure. There are only two areas from which oil is marketed at the present time; one, the old district around Petrolia in southern Ontario, and the other is the small Sheep Creek field near Calgary in Alberta. The former district has produced between 200,000 and 800,000 bbl. annually for the past 40 years, recent figures being near the minimum amount. Sheep Creek has produced about 12,000 bbl. annually for the past five years. The known reserves in proved territory in each of these fields are exceedingly small, when considered in terms of world reserves. The chief hope of Canada for reserves of considerable magnitude lies in the western provinces. Sedimentary rocks similar to those in the productive fields of the United States occupy thousands of square miles in the western provinces, so that it seems likely that somewhere within this great area the peculiar conditions necessary for the presence of oil pools will be found. Prospecting is being carried on energetically by several large companies, as well as by many independents. The Dominion Government, which controls most of the public lands, is pursuing a fairly liberal policy toward the prospector, which should stimulate wild-catting, although the province of British Columbia, which controls public lands within t.hat province, is at present unwilling to give adequate encouragement to make wildcatting attractive. As there is really no assurance that any productive pools will be found in western Canada, the estimates of reserves are subject to a wide possibility of error. In making estimates, the various areas within which geologic conditions are more or less uniform are discussed separately; the estimates given for each area are not given with the idea that there is a reasonable probability of their eventually proving to be correct. It is hoped that an average of these estimates, taken together with those made for other undeveloped countries, will give a correct total of reserves

Abstract -The Corbet deposit is one of 17 proximal Cu-Zn massive sulfide deposits located. within the Noranda Cauldron which occurs within the core of the Noranda Volcanic Complex. The deposit is located at the top of the F1avrian Formation, the lowermost formation of the 3000 m thick Mine Sequence; the deposit has yielded 2.75 M tonnes of ore grading 30Jo Cu, 0.96% Zn, 2.06 g/t Ag and 1.0 g/t Au. The multi-lens Corbet deposit formed within a 250 m wide crater that occurs within a localized breccia pile. The Corbet breccia pile was constructed by explosive magmatic and hydrovolcanic eruptions localized along the south flank of a larger andesitic shield volcano that formed during the waning stages of F1avrian volcanism. The breccia footwall of the deposit allowed unfocused and widespread hydrothermal discharge that resulted in the development of a large area of chlorite and fringing sericite alteration that exceeds, by six times, the size of the sulfide lenses and represents a significant exploration target.

In 1981 Ertec Rocky Mountain, Inc. completed a significant development in contemporary planning support; MINEPAK was completed, tested on various properties and offered for license. MINEPAK was one of the first computer systems for ore body analysis and mine planning that - Was designed as an interactive and completely integrated system - Was portable so that it can run on many hardware systems - Was really user friendly - Can run on minicomputers and on some microprocessors - Was built around a data base management system MINEPAK was designed to be a completely general block modeller and it achieved that goal. Since it contained a gridded file type, surfaces could be easily modelled but the system needed extensions to allow layered deposits to be modelled with the same ease as block models. So COALPAK was designed. COALPAK is an extension as well as a modification of MINEPAK. A 'layer' file type was defined and retrofitted into the existing system, new software tools were developed for modelling layered deposits, and tools for strip mining were written.

In order to obtain a better insight into the pressure-volume relationship of reservoir rocks a theory of pore and rock bulk volume variations is presented. The theory is independent of the shape of the pores but is restricted to isotropic porous media built up of continuous homogeneous matrix material. The main conclusion obtained from this theory is that only three elastic constants and three viscous constants are required for describing pore and rock bulk volume variations if the porosity is explicitly introduced into the treatment. In addition, reasonable approximations are introduced for various types of reservoir rock, e.g., sandstones, limestones, and shales, which lead to further simplifications of the basic formulas. In consequence there is then a further reduction in the number of deformation constants which have to be determined experimentally. It is shown how measurements of these remaining deformation constants can be performed most conveniently. Finally the application of the theory to reservoir studies is discussed and the translation of experimental results obtained in the laboratory into reservoir behavior is considered. INTRODUCTION The decline of fluid pressure in connection with the withdrawal of fluid from an underground reservoir gives rise to a change in volume of both reservoir fluids and reservoir rock. The volume variation of the reservoir rock results in a decrease of both the pore volume and the total volume of the fluid-filled formation. Whereas the variation in volume of the reservoir fluids with pressure is usually known from PVT analysis, that in the volume of the porous medium is rarely measured, as it is considered of minor importance in reservoir engineering. Nevertheless, certain experimental results' suggest that in a number of cases the neglection of the variation in pore volume may introduce errors into material balance calculations of reservoirs producing above the bubble point. Only a few experimental results on the compressibility of porous rocks have been published. The compressibility of pure quartz and of calcite can be found in a paper by Adams and Williamson'. Botset and Reed' carried out some experiments on the compressibility of loose sands, while Carpenter and Spencer' measured the compressibility of a number of consolidated sandstones, which data were supplemented by Hughes and Cooke5. Hall' finally reported a number of experiments designed to study the influence of the porosity on the compressibility of oil-bearing formations, from which it appeared that, particularly in the low porosity range, the compressibility of the pore volume is important enough to be taken into account. Difficulties, however, arise in applying these experimental results to field cases. This is partly due to the fragmentary nature of the published data. Yet even if more complete data were available, the need for a theoretical background would be strongly felt. Such a background can be partially found in studies carried out by Biot,6,7 who published a theory of elastic deformations of porous materials and their influence on fluid displacement within the pores, by Lubinski8, who studied the stress distribution in an elastic porous medium neglecting pore compressibility, and by Gass-mann" who mathematically analysed the elasticity of packings of spheres. The contributions of Biot intro-duce a number of deformation constants which are impractical for reservoir rocks from an aspect of experi-mental determination. Starting up a fan or modifying its setting point either by rotational speed variations or blade angle changes, obviously results in new ventilation conditions in the network, which is, of course, the object of the operation. However, since transient phenomena may then occur, particularly in complex networks, there may be a need to simulate these situations prior to any action. This is all the more true, if we are dealing with a multiple interactive fan sys- tem. Simulations with a transient model have shown that the flow in certain airways could be temporarily reversed due to the pres- sure variations that reach both its ends with a different time lag. This phenomenon may cause dangerous situations to occur in cases of fire or outburst of methane. It is also true that the air flow could be reversed in secondary and less powerful fans, while still rotating in the normal direction. The study and the experimental investigation of the extension of the reverse flow characteristic is therefore justified from two points of view : • a numerical simulation model for transient flow conditions must be capable of handling temporary reversed flows, and thus have appropriate fan characteristic curves available over the entire operating domain; • while operating fans, reversed flows should be avoided or at least reduced. Therefore, the design of start-up procedures or real time control algorithms should take these phenomena into account. A particular interesting application is the operating of two fans in parallel. In order to investigate experimentally the characteristic curves of a fan under reversed flow conditions a small scale model was built. This facility was designed in such a manner that it was possible to carry out experiments concerning flow reversions and to try out sequential start-up procedures for two fans in parallel.

"Many factors can be responsible for coal mine roof falls including, mining geometry, stress conditions and local geology. In the Illinois Basin coal mines, roof instability is commonly attributed to the low strength of the immediate roof, which is also moisture sensitive. Recently, in order to understand the mechanisms of roof instability, numerical modeling has often been the preferred ground control analysis tool. Since roof materials can exhibit significant spatial variability, such modeling results may not represent every section of the mine. At the same time, it is not feasible to carry out numerical modeling for the full range of geological and mining conditions possible at a mine. Operationally, it is more convenient and highly practical to have a simple map that depicts the expected roof conditions, determined through either complex numerical models or simple empirical analysis throughout the reserve area. In this paper, a case history is presented that shows how a combination of simple empirical analyses of geologic data and past ground control experiences at a mine can be synthesized into a roof stability map, which can then be used to forecast future ground conditions. The usefulness of such a roof stability map will be examined in terms of the predicted and actual ground conditions encountered over a period of more than a year after the map was created.INTRODUCTIONA roof fall, which can result in fatalities and lost work time, is considered to be one of the most severe ground control hazards in underground coal mines. In general, there are many factors responsible for roof falls, including mining geometry, stress conditions and local geology. In the Illinois Basin, roof falls are commonly attributed to the weak nature of immediate roof rocks, and some superficial falls may be initiated due to moisture sensitivity. Some unstable areas also occur when the immediate roof is highly laminated.Numerical modeling is a useful tool used to understand the mechanism of a roof fall by incorporating site-specific parameters. In the past, numerical modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of roof falls as well as simulate· roof falls and cutter behavior, but such work had been strictly site-specific (Gadde and Peng, 2005; Ray, 2009). Because of the restrictions imposed by the input parameters, numerical modeling results cannot represent the entire mine. In the real world, mining conditions vary from place to place, and even in a single panel, modeling results valid at one site may not apply at another nearby site. At the same time, due to the lack of input data pertaining to rock characteristics and in-situ stress variations, it is not practical to carry out numerical modeling for each local area of the entire mine site. In addition to these difficulties, mine operators prefer simple tools to understand the ground conditions at their mine sites. One simple and commonsense based tool is the roof stability map. A stability map not only synthesizes the geologic and stress analysis data empirically, but it can also be used to predict future ground control issues at that mine. Because of this practical appeal, stability maps are more likely to gain mine operators' acceptance and be used in their planning operations. In this paper, a case study is presented on the development of a 'Roof Stability Map' that was principally used for roof fall prediction for a mine in the Illinois Basin."

If components of a gas-liquid stream react with each other and with stationary solids, involving parallel and sequential, reversible and irreversible, and slow and instantaneous reactions, the process can be defined by a set of simultaneous differential rate equations and simulated as multistage semibatch re¬actors. Each stage is divided into finite time increments. Within each increment, even the simultaneous reactions are treated as sequential. The proposed method follows process evolution from non-steady state startup to normal operating conditions. It allows computing byproduct buildup in recycles, tracer response curves and, in case of underground processes, expansion to adjacent parts of the deposit.

Owing to a unique labor situation and other unusual circumstances, the mining methods of the Rand are hardly comparable with practice elsewhere. They are of considerable interest, however, and their importance is increased by the magnitude of the' industry with which they are identified, gold of $166,186,000 value, say 40 per cent. of the world's production, having been recovered from 25,701,954 tons of ore milled in 1914. In the sketchy remarks to follow, attention will first be drawn to some influential factors of general bearing, after which certain features at two mines of the writer's group will be referred to. It is hoped that engineers associated with similar or different conditions and practice will contribute to broaden the discussion. Before proceeding, recognition is due the generous assistance of C. E. Knecht and F. A. Unger. General Observations The principal mines are situated along the northern limit of an irregularly shaped geological basin, and extend in almost unbroken continuity over a distance of about 60 miles. As the boundaries are defined by vertical planes there are both "outcrop" and "deep-level" properties, all differing in size and in technical features. So much has been written in regard to the geology of the Rand that only a few pertinent features need here be recalled. Briefly, the ore deposits are profitably enriched portions of certain conglomerate beds or "reefs," rarely more than three, which are interposed between quartzite, or quartzite and slate, and lie so closely together that where more than one are mined they are dealt with as a working unit, although they may be stoped separately. Their collective extension is locally referred to as " the Reef." Along the outcrop the series dips more or less steeply, and in depth it flattehs, the latter tendency being most marked in the Far East Rand, where the bottom of the basin is nowhere so deep as to be inaccessible. Solinox is a physical scrubbing process capable of removing a number of noxious materials from off-gasses, especially SO2, hydrocarbons, halogens, heavy metals such as dust, etc. As these materials are dissolved physically, (not chemically bound), the solvent is absolutely stable and no by-products are formed in the scrubbing cycle. The process has? been installed in three plants up to now, treating from approximately 30 MMSCFD to approximately 100 MMSCFD. These installations are in a non ferrous metal smelting operation, in a cellulose factory, and in a roasting process.

THE drawn wire texture of body-centered cubic iron,' tungsten,' and molybdenum~ as been determined to be a [110] direction parallel to the wire axis. The purpose of this study is to extend the available information on body-centered cubic wire textures to other metals and alloys. Wires were produced using hand wire rolls and dies as given in Table I. In addition, attempts were unsuccessful to draw wires from chromium, vanadium (Vanadium Corp. of America), and tungsten (Cleveland Tungsten Inc.). Although it is known that wires can be made from these materials, suitable techniques were not readily adaptable. Where necessary, wires were polished and etched to form flat ribbons 0.005 to 0.007 in. thick, and transmission X-ray patterns were taken using molybdenum radiation with the specimen tilted 0 degrees from the perpendicular toward the beam to critically cover the wire axis. Analyses were made of (110), (002), and (112) reflection circles. In all cases reflection maxima indicated the texture to be a single [1101 deformation fiber, as illustrated by Fig. 1 for molybdenum. In the case of the hot-worked ß brass, a second texture, [loo], was also found, but this is believed to be the result of recrystallization since it has been reported for re-crystallized molybdenum wires' and it was not present in the cold-drawn ß brass. The difference in drawability between the 51.92 pct Cu ß brass and the 62.5 pct Cu ß brass (containing some grain boundary a due to incomplete quenching) is quite striking, since the latter could be cold worked readily while the former had to be hot worked to avoid cracking. Summary The deformation texture of drawn body-centered cubic wires of ß brass, iron, molybdenum, niobium, and tantalum is essentially a single [110] fiber as predicted by theory.' The H-3 Project is planning, design, and construction of a 10-mile (16 km)-long final segment of new highway that traverses the Koolau mountain range in Oahu. Interstate H-3 traverses North Halawa Valley on one side of the Koolau Mountains and Haiku Valley on the other side. The project includes a tunnel through the mountain range. The one-mile (1.6 km)-long twin-bore Trans-Koolau Tunnel will have two lanes in each direction. The total roadway width including shoulders in each bore will be 38 ft (11.6 m). The geologic and geohydrologic conditions along the alignment present a variety of tunneling problems. Geologic conditions consist of volcanic materials deposited generally in fairly thin basaltic layers. These volcanic materials generally weather down to "MH" soils which are compressible but relatively strong. Perched ground water that is recharged by heavy rainfall is present in the mountains. The paper presents results of initial geologic surveys and exploratory boring, and plans for exploratory tunneling and testing programs. A site specific classification method developed to characterize the weathered profile is presented.

"INTRODUCTIONThe low calorific value and the high moisture and ash contents of run-of-mine (r.o.rn.) lignite limits the utilization of Saskatchewan lignites to thermal power plants in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and western Ontario. On the other hand, the low sulphur content and the low mining cost make lignites potentially attractive for new coal markets, if suitable processes can be found for upgrading. Economic upgrading to a higher quality fuel would make lignites more acceptable for industrial and utility boilers.This paper presents a summary of the process engineering evaluation of coal upgrading technologies conducted in support of a study of selected lignite upgrading processes. The summary presents the relative advantages and offers specific comments on the application of coal upgrading technologies for lignites. ResourcesLignite comprises the largest fossil fuel energy deposits in Saskatchewan. The total resources of immediate and future interest exceed 27 billion tonnes. The measured and indicated lignite resources of immediate interest are large enough to last for over 200 years at the current production rate of about 10 million tonnes per year (Table 1).Saskatchewan lignitedeposits are present in three different geologic formations: (I) the Ravenscrag Formation of Paleocene Age in southern Saskatchewan; (2) the Swan River Formation of Lower Cretaceous Age in central north Saskatchewan; and (3) the Judith River Formation of Upper Cretaceous Age in central west Saskatchewan. The deposits in the Swan River and Judith River Formation are not currently of economic interest.The Ravenscrag deposits are confmed to four lignite basins, namely: the Estevan, the Willow Bunch, the Wood Mountain and the Cypress basin (Fig. 1). The estimated resources of immediate interest in the four basins are over 7 billion tonnes (Table I). These resources include lignite seams at least 1.5 m thick, at depths of less than 45 m.The average quality of lignite varies relatively little between the four basins considering the distance between deposits (Table 2). There is, however, a progressive increase in moisture and ash content, and a decrease in calorific value and carbon content as one moves westward from the Estevan to Wood Mountain and Cypress basins. The Estevan area deposits are of higher rank despite the fact that they are stratigraphically younger than the Willow Bunch deposits (Cameron and Marconi, 1979).In upgrading lignite to a higher quality fuel, it is important to know not only the average proximate and ultimate analysis (Table 2) but also other lignite characteristics influencing the product quality . For example, Figure 2 shows the effect of lignite HIC ratio on the product equilibrium moisture for hydrothermal treatment of lignite. It is apparent that lignites with a higher HIC ratio, or high liptinite content yield much better quality product for the same hydrotreatment conditions. Other examples of lignite characteristics which are important in upgrading include distribution of sulphur forms and mineral matter, maceral composition and degree of surface oxidation."

"IN A SHORT PAPER it is impossible to do much more than to list the industrial minerals found in Saskatchewan and to give a brief description of the activity associated with each. I will not attempt to discuss the geology. It is sufficient to say that the settled part of the Province is covered by glacial drift which varies in thickness from a few feet to several hundreds of feet, and that this has hindered the search over much of the Province.CLAYA notable exception to this is the Cypress Hills area in the southwest corner which did not suffer any glacial action and where we find some of the large exposures of Cretaceous clays. In this area, the majority of the deposits are of stone-ware clays which are •an excellent raw material for such products as face brick and sewer pipe. Although the clay cannot be transported over any great distance it is used extensively in Alberta and Saskatchewan in the production of these products."

Most of the aluminum produced in the United States today is derived from foreign bauxite deposits. Earth Sciences, Inc. initiated a program to evaluate domestic non-bauxite sources for alumina in the 1960's. In the initial evaluation of alunite, domestic resources were not sufficient to support development. An exploration program led to the discovery of large deposits of alunite in Utah and several other western states. Identification of alunite is difficult as both its physical and chemical characteristics are similar to the minerals with which it is associated. Most of the significant alunite deposits in the western United States are replacement type deposits. These deposits have formed as a result of hydrothermal alteration of volcanic, sub-volcanic, and igneous rocks. Typical alunite deposits contain between 30% and 50% alunite between 50% and 70% quartz with minor amounts of other minerals. Four mineralogical zones are common in these systems. They include a siliceous zone, a quartz-alunite zone, a kaolinite zone and a chlorite-montmorillonite zone. Total U.S. reserves of alunite were estimated at 20 million metric tons (at 30% alunite) by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1941. Here recent work by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates reserves of 252 million metric tons and potential resources at 1.4 billion metric tons. Reserves and resources estimated for 23 properties on which field work has been done by ESI are considerably higher. Most of these properties have reserves and potential resources of several hundred million metric tons. The combined demonstrated reserves at these properties are estimated to be about 650 million metric tons. Inferred reserves are estimated at 2.5 billion metric tons and potential resources at 8 billion metric tons. It appears that the U.S. has sufficient reserves and resources for alunite to be considered as a potential non-bauxite source of alumina.

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath pre- dominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increas- ingly important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations commenced in the mid 1960's and it is now possible to predict subsidence in the Southern Coalfield with reasonable con- fidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of the subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover. The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidence of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

A small-scale method was developed for determining the free-swelling index of coal samples of limited quantity, especially the macerals. Results of a series of tests using a 0.3-gram sample correlated well with those by the standard method using a 1-gram sample. The standard and small-scale methods are modified to give unrestricted swelling for those coals having swelling index numbers above 7.
