Zinc smelters in the central western States have established a very high standard of purity for blende-concentrates, viz., zinc 60, iron less than 3, and lead less than 1 per cent. The very low percentage of iron is made possible by the blende containing less than 0.5 per cent. of isomorphous iron sulphide and by the sparing occurrence of pyritic material in the large blende-deposits of southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas. The blende in these districts occurs in sub-carboniferous limestone, and is associated with chert, residual clay, cal-cite, pyrite or marcasite and bitumen. The different minerals are coarse and therefore readily separated by mechanical washing from the blende, with the exception of pyrite and marcasite, as blende has a specific gravity of from 3.9 to 4.1; marcasite, from 4.85 to 4.90; and pyrite, from 4.95 to 5.10. The common procedure of dressing the ores' is to crush in a breaker, size in a trommel with 0.5-in. holes, pass the over-size through roughing-rolls and then jig the ore, now reduced to 0.5 in. maximum size, in roughing multiple-sieve jigs. The products of these are waste-tailings, side-discharge coarse concentrates, side-discharge coarse middlings and bottom-discharge fine middlings. The coarse concentrates are sent to the market. The coarse middlings are crushed in middlings-rolls and brought back into the system by feeding into the main trommel. The fine middlings are cleaned upon finishing-jigs. The rare earth elements (REE) are composed of 17 elements that are 15 elements of lanthanide added scandium and yttrium. REE are divided into light rare earth elements (LREE) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE). Although the supply source of LREE is distributed around the world, the supply sources are unevenly distributed. Thus, the development of a new HREE supply source is required. In this study, we focused on the weathered residual rare earth ore as a new HREE supply source. Since so far this weathered residual rare earth ore could not be treated neither by flotation nor by wet high intensity magnetic separation, it was not considered as HREE resource before. In this study, we investigated the leaching of HREE from the weathered residual rare earth ore and elucidated the effectiveness of planetary milling with sodium hydroxide as a method to enhance their recovery. For this purpose, the weathered residual rare earth ore was first grinded by planetary mill in the presence of sodium hydroxide and then leached by sulfuric acid. The influence of planetary milling on HREE recovery was investigated by assisting the leaching experiments with X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) in cerium and yttrium K-edge. Since yttrium was the most contained HREE in the weathered residual rare earth ore used in this study, we focused on yttrium in XAFS analysis. Results clearly showed that the recovery of HREE increased by planetary milling with sodium hydroxide. XAFS analysis revealed that a part of the yttrium in the weathered residual rare earth ore was changed to yttrium hydroxide by planetary milling with sodium hydroxide. It is supposed that all HREE were affected like yttrium due to a similar behavior observed in leaching.

Added value is a term loosely used in the industry, but what exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product and more importantly how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. But what is misleading is that producing value added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases firms that make "value-added" products are not very profitable. It is not only important to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when we look at value-added opportunities, we must understand how to obtain the value added and more importantly how to maintain the value. There are four major factors that limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper will examine these factors and will use the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

Several occurrences of disseminated galena, including a former producing mine, are found in Pennsylvanian fluviatile sandstone of the Salmon River Basin, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Detailed study of the distribution of these occurrences has revealed that highest galena concentrations are found in sandstone overlying channel-shaped depressions in felsic basement rocks. These buried depressions, in turn, correlate in position with modern streams in areas of basement exposure. This correspondence suggests that the latter are at least partially controlled by an exhumed Pennsylvanian topography. If this is correct, then several other streams in the area, lying on basement, may be used to locate possible undiscovered lead deposits in sandstones of the Salmon River Basin.

Mine maintenance planning, scheduling and daily workflow communications are crucial elements for enhancing overall efficiency and reducing costs. Equally important, it helps identify time periods that equipment will be unavailable so conflicts with production demands are avoided. The current CMMS Kennecott Energy Corporation (KEC) utilizes does not perform these functions in an effective manner. A solution to this problem was to develop an intuitive web-based maintenance planning, scheduling and work flow system call E-MESA. This paper will discuss the E-MESA'S system structure and advantages and disadvantages of using the web based E-MESA solution to perform the maintenance functions described above.

The chemical variation of central North American lignite fly ash can be compared using the major and minor oxide analyses and the distribution pattern of the inter-grain chemistries of the individual fly ash have been used to illustrate the variations in bulk ,sample and individual grain chemistry. This information documents the chemical variability of the lignite fly ashes by geographic region. There is a direct relationship between grains rich in SiOa and AlaO, and in the NazO content of the grains in lignite derived fly ashes. There is also a direct relationship between grains rich in Ca0 and the MgO and SO, content of the grains in lignite derived fly ashes,. These variations are shown using CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 and CaO-Na2O-MgO ternary diagrams.

THE spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. ? There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others1-7, have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recog-nized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8,9,10 for cast iron. In addition to the humanitarian aspects of a dust-control program, certain economic benefits are becoming more fully recognized and now furnish a greater incentive to the mill operator to eliminate the dust from his plant. It is well known that a favorable working environment promotes increased efficiency and improves the morale of employees, with a consequent decrease in labor turnover rates. One progressive mining company' estimates its direct and indirect labor turnover costs at from $40 to $50 per man; for skilled labor, such as machine operators, the cost may approach $100 per man. While these figures may not be typical of every plant, they do indicate a potential savings in operating costs. Dust signifies waste; its elimination decreases maintenance costs of mechanical and electrical equipment; its recovery is often justified from the standpoint of values contained in the collected material, although in large-scale milling operations handling low-grade ore this may not be an important factor, Perhaps the most significant trend in industrial sanitation is that dust-control equipment and procedures are becoming recognized as integral parts of the mill flowsheet. Exhaust ventilating systems are now afforded equal care in design and maintenance to that given other machinery more closely related to the Process. Methods of Dust Control "Dust control" is a general term descriptive of a number of methods used singly or together to prevent particulate atmospheric contamination. These methods are: in order .of their desirability, as follows: 1. Change of process. 2. Isolation of process. 3. Wet methods. 4. Ventilation. a. Local exhaust ventilation. b. General ventilation. 5. Personal respiratory protection. In ore-concentration plants it is seldom prac tical to change a process to eliminate the dust it creates It is possible in some cases to isolate a particular dust-producing operation from the rest of the plant, provided that constant attention on the part of the operators is not required. Frequently water is used in fine crushing and fine grinding, primarily to facilitate the processing of the ore and incidentally to allay the dust produced. Wet methods, however, are not feasible in coarse and secondary crushing operations, because of the relatively great volume of water required in instantly wetting each freshly fractured rock surface. Such quantities of water would entail conveying and storage difficulties. Local exhaust ventilation is the most effective and most commonly applied control measure, wherein directional air currents through the zone of dust production draw the contaminants into a duct system. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of reliable information on exhaust ventilation is available.2-5 of necessity these publications are rather general, being primarily concerned with engineering fundamentals. Discussion of the paper of DOUGLAS BUNTING, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 97, January, 1915, pp. 1 to 21. ARTHUR HOVEY STORRS, Scranton, Pa.-I know something about accidents Nos. 4 and 8. At the Fuller mine there was no disturbance of the surface in connection with either of those accidents, there was no surface settling, nor signs of sand in the mine, and seemingly the water all came from a subterranean basin or water-bearing stratum overlying the Six Foot vein. A similar thing was shown, in an accident not referred to in Mr. Bunting's table, at the Avondale, where we had an inflow of water, as high as 12,000 gal. a minute, for a considerable period. Regarding the second accident (No. 8) at the Fuller mine: after the first inflow of water (No. 4 of the table), the mining was abandoned in the Six Foot vein. A long slope was. driven in an underlying seam, and when this had reached a point about 2,000 ft. southeast of the place where the first inflow of water occurred, and where the bore holes show there was apparently sufficient rock covering for the Six Foot vein, a rock plane was driven up to the upper vein (Six Foot) and one afternoon this exposed the coal. During the following night the inflow of the water occurred. There were absolutely no workings at this point so that no disturbance of the overlying rocks could have occurred. The result of the inflow of water was to fill up the entire lower-vein workings in about two or three clays and caused the abandonment of the mine. After several years, considerable time and money were spent in an effort to hoist the water from the shaft and mine workings, with varying, but in the main rather indifferent, success until, clue to the breaking of one hoisting rope, the engineer pulled the other hoisting tank up through the tower and down on to the engine, making a complete wreck of the whole plant. It was then decided to allow the mine to soak and it is still doing so, other portions of the property being mined from adjoining collieries.

Proper use of automatic controls in the process industries is a combination of art and science. Although many phases of automatic control theory can be expressed by precise mathematical relationships, the final control arrangement usually requires considerable effort by trial and error before the optimum control circuit is found. The failure of flotation operators to recognize that control circuits require study and plant experimentation before satisfactory operation occurs has led to a popular misconception that flotation plants simply do not lend themselves to automation. This widespread belief has been overcome to some degree in recent years by the numerous installations of automatic controls that have paid their way by increasing profits in terms of increased recoveries, lowered costs, or higher grade concentrates. WHY CONTROL ? Any form of automation must be justified in terms of ultimate return on in- vestment by improving quality, by increasing plant throughput, or by reducing the total operating costs. Generally speaking, automatic controls rarely re- place a mill operator. They assist the operator in holding important variables within predetermined limits. Large tonnage operations usually can justify a great deal of automation because an increase in one or two units of recovery results in enormous savings compared to the capital and operating costs of controls. DETERMINATION OF CONTROL The first questions in considering plant automation are: 1) What variables must be controlled? 2) What are the optimum levels of the variables? The optimum operating conditions for any process are those which maximize profits. Many of the variables active in flotation processing can be determined by experimentation in the laboratory or pilot plant 10. Although laboratory experiments can pinpoint variables, the true optimum conditions existing at plant level usually must be determined by plant scale experiments. During June and July 1999 a United States Antarctic Program (USAP) team of three commercial divers and one blaster successMy removed an underwater rock obstruction which interfered with safe docking practices of research vessels that call at Palmer Station - the USAP research facility located on Anvers Island, Palmer Peninsula Area, Antarctica. Ordinarily, such a project might be considered routine. However, certain aspects of the project, particularly those dealing with logistics in a remote corner of the earth, sat3eguards for marine biota, and working underwater in the dark of the austral winter, conspired to make this project interesting. Even more challenging was ensuring the protection of the existing pier - a deeply corroded sheet pile structure backfilled with loose gravel and rock - which lay less than 50 feet away from the target obstruction, not to mention uncertainties at the outset as to the nature of the rock mass forming that obstruction.

This study was undertaken in order to determine a conservative estimate of the attenuation rate of vibrations through the shallow limestone in South Florida due quarry blasting. The natural limestone bedrock in occurs at or near the surface in southeastern peninsular Florida. While the shallow overburden soils is advantageous for mining purposes, vibrations from blasting has been a contentious issue in South Florida due to the proximity of the mines to several residential communities. White Rock Quarries and Krome Quarries are two active mining facilities in South Florida which generate numerous complaints, insurance claims, and lawsuits from residents in nearby communities who claim that the vibrations cause damage to their houses. Both quarries are located on the eastern edge of the Everglades, with thousands of nearby residences at the western edge of development in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. Data obtained from over 400 publicly available blast monitoring and associated seismograph reports from White Rock Quarries were reviewed and compiled. The data was used to emperically develop a conservative estimate of the ground attenuation rate based on the scaled distance from the blast origin, which can be compared to Figure B-1 from USBM RI 8507 to determine whether it is feasible if damage could have occurred at a given property.

The changing characteristics of raw materials has highlighted the limitations that conventional vibrating screens have in the handling of fine wet sticky materials. These' limitations have led to the development of a totally new concept of screening, the Rotating Probability Screen. In order to illustrate the practical benefits to be gained by the extraction of fine materials ahead of subse quent processes particularly in the coal industry, the experiences gained in Ro-Pro installations in America, Australia, Europe and Britain are drawn upon.

Owens Lake is at present a source of important nonmetallic minerals, sodium carbonate (soda ash, Na2CO3); sodium sesquicarbonate (trona, Na2CO3.NaHCO3.-2H2O) and borax, (Na2B4O7.10H2O). Owens Lake is a closed basin in the southern part of Inyo County, California, at the southern end of Owens Valley, east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and west of the Coso and Inyo Mountains. Broadly considered, it is in the Great Basin area, but at no time was it a part of Lake Lahontan. Closed Basins Closed basins are phenomena of arid or semiarid regions where outflow is considerably less than inflow and where accordingly soluble salts concentrate in residual liquid. When inflowing waters originate in areas where the rocks are predominantly marine sediments, the residual basin liquid is primarily a chloride, brine; if the rocks are largely igneous, the residual brine tends to be alkaline containing carbonates, and sometimes borates as well. Since normally, both types of rocks occur in regions contiguous to closed basins, residual liquids do not often fit into the two broad divisions mentioned. No two residual brines are exactly alike, just as no two ore deposits are exactly alike. Even out of the same closed basin, it is possible to get widely different analyses of liquids since underground and surface flows, as well as local evaporation rates and other conditions might have a marked influence on residual-liquid compositions. At Searles Lake, The American Potash and Chemical Corporation is building a plant to process a lower-level brine which is considerably higher in sodium carbonate and borax, and lower in potassium chloride, than that company has processed for many years. F. W. Clarke1 has classified waters of closed basins as follows: I. Chloride type; largely sodium chloride (NaC1) and of oceanic type, such as Great Salt Lake. Related is -the Dead Sea, a bittern residue of magnesium, potassium and sodium chlorides. a. Sulphate type; largely sodium sulphate (Na2SO4) with considerable sodium chloride such as Sevier Lake, Utah; Laramie Lakes, Wyoming; Dale Lake, California. 3. Carbonate type; high in carbonates and fairly high in sulphates, such as Moses Lake, Eastern Washington; and the Nebraska Potash Lakes. 4. Carbonate—chloride type; lower in carbonates than type 3 and about equally rich in sulphates, such as Pyramid Lake, Nevada. 5. Sulphate—Carbonate type; quite high in sulphates and carbonates, such as Pelican Lake, Oregon. 6. Triple type; considerable quantities of carbonates, sulphates and chlorides

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dyke/stock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

In today’s world, production is the name of the game. We are all in business to make money. In the Quarrying and Mining industry the same holds true. The primary goal is to develop the best drilling and blasting program available to maintain uniform fragmentation to maximize production. Also we want to maintain drilling and blasting costs and minimize escalators. This paper is intended to discuss ways for all parties (quarry’s, blast service and drill companies) to attain this through understanding what can be done to help blasthole drilling and production. Blast designs and seminar’s emphasize the accuracy of drilling to produce better fragmentation. Blast design must also include basic concepts in the drilling process. The type of drill to be used for example whether it is a crawler or truck mount, top hammer or down the hole is important. Quarry operators have a role to play as well. They hold the key to the production of drilling. What the customer does or does not do has a direct effect financially to the drilling. The phrase of pay me now or pay me latter comes to mind. This paper will explore the detail of planning that is required by the quarry and/or blast service companies before a single hole is drilled. The drill must be able to meet the production need of the operation. The type of drill available and what can and cannot be done. The drill cost must be competitive. This paper will touch on comparison drill costs from 1967 to 1999.

The use of the cyclone as a dense-medium cleaning device was first described by Driessen6/ in 1945, after development of the process in the Netherlands during the German occupation of World War II. A pilot plant was built in the Netherlands soon thereafter, and the first commercial plant was built in 1948. By 1958, 18 plants were operating or under construction.7/ Thus, economic factors in Europe, where the high cost of coal places a premium on efficient cleaning, dictated rapid adoption of the cyclone. American reception of the process differed. The Bureau of Mines presented the results of its own small-scale cyclone experiments in 1946;8/ showing a sharp separation between coal and impurity; adoption by industry now is taking place. There is now much greater emphasis on the efficient cleaning of fine coal, and the first American cyclone plant has begun operating; others are planned or under construction. With the present interest in improved treatment of fine coal, the Bureau of Mines felt that additional performance data on the cyclone would be helpful to industry. Therefore, a complete, open-circuit pilot plant was built to make cleaning trials on American coals covering a wide range of washability characteristics. Five raw coals and one middling product were included in the investigation, and each was cleaned at several densities; 17 cleaning trials are reported.
