THE MILDEST recession of the postwar period ended in the first months of 1961, and the economy climbed steadily during the remainder of the year. The Federal Reserve Board (FRB) Index of Industrial Production climbed from a low point of 102 (1957=100) in February to 115 in December, a rise of 12.5 percent. But economic activity for the year as a whole was only 1.5 percent higher than the 1960 level, as measured by real gross national product (GNP). Although activity increased throughout 1961, much of it was merely regaining ground lost in the decline during the second half of 1960 and the first months of 1961. The FRB index did not re ain the July 1960 high of 110 until June of 1961. Mineral fuels did not fully share in the economic recovery. The (FRB) crude oil and natural gas index rose only 5 percent between February and December. Although the index of monthly coal production increased 11.5 percent during the year, the February level was so low that total production for the year was the lowest since 1954. Total production of energy measured in Btu's was up slightly (1 percent) during the ear. Coal production was down; production of crude oil and natural gas was up. Calculated consumption paralleled production-total up slightly, coal lower, and crude oil and natural gas higher. The most interesting product developments were in coke and residual fuel oil. Solvent extraction has become important in recent years as a unit process in extractive metallurgy. The flexibility and simplicity of the technique have attracted widespread attention, and numerous papers describing actual and projected metallurgical applications have been published. However, differences in terminology, procedure, objectives, and standards, as reflected in reports by different operators and investigators, have sometimes made appraisals and comparisons difficult. Consequently, a need appeared for n series of basic reports on the subject. This Bureau of Mines Information Circular is the first of such a series. It deals with the status of solvent extraction in metallurgy, as well as with the rudiments and terminology of the unit operation. In analytical chemistry, extraction of molecular species from aqueous media by immiscible organic solvents has been used for many years to separate and determine chemical elements (61).4 Complex chlorides of iron and other metals are readily soluble in ethers and ketones, as are the nitrates of uranium and thorium. Most metals are extractable as complex salts of some organic reagent, such as dithizone, 8-hydroxyquinoline, or cupferron.

A number of relatively recent factors associated with the design of new metallurgical processing plants have made the effective training of operators a requirement for a successful start-up. Some of these factors include large capital investment in a minimum of processing lines, highly complex process control systems, and stringent regulations on plant effluent, to name a few. More than ever, operating mistakes during the start-up phase can lead to substantial delays in achieving design production, as well as problems with government authorities if permit limits are exceeded. The only way to assure your return on plant investment is to ensure new plant operators have the knowledge to properly run the plant from the outset. A comprehensive set of operating manuals specifically targeted for plant operators and foreman, written by experienced operating personnel, is the only effective way to provide the necessary information for start-up-related training.

There were 110 important discoveries of either oil or gas in Co1orado in 1935. There was, however, further development of the Price structure in southern Colorado and developments since the first of the year indicate. that an important oil field may be in the making. The discovery of oil in Price structure was made by the Oil City Petroleum Co. late ill Novem-ber, 1934, in its No. 2 Garnett in the northeast corner of lot 3 in the SW.¼ of sec. 25-33N.-2E. This well developed a good showing of oil in Dakota sand at 970 ft. The hole filled up 15 ft. with 40° gravity oil overnight and after standing for several days the oil level was 400 ft. higher. As a result of the discovery of oil by the No. 2 Garnett, three wells were drilled by the William E. Hughes Estate. Two of these wells had good showings of oil and may make good producers but it is doubtful whether they will produce the estimated capacity of 500 bbl. each with which they have been credited. Although the Hughes Estate wells have been completed for some time, they have not been given thorough production tests because of the isolated position of the field and lack of proper facilities. The. first well drilled by the Hughes Estate was located on the west side of the Navajo River on the downthrow side of a fault. It encoun-tered water ill the Dakota sand at 1285 ft, and was abandoned in green shales of the Morrison at 1405 ft. Well cuttings from the Dakota sand showed some evidence of once containing oil, so a 1ocation was selected for No. 2 Fee on the east side of the river and on the upthrow side of the fault. Oil was discovered in Dakota sands ill 1935 by Continental Oil Co. in its No. 3 Hoye, NW.NW.NE. of sec. 34-9N.-78W., on the South McCallum anticline in North Park, Jackson County, Colo., but on account of heavy flows of carbon dioxide gas under high pressure it has been impossible for the company to get an accurate gage of the oil production. The freezing action of expanding carbon dioxide makes the producing of the oil difficult and costly.

TEN years ago Taggart, Taylor and Ince1 described a workable, convenient apparatus for the measurement of contact angles between cleaved, ground or polished particles and captive bubbles. Wark and Cox2 and Wark and Sutherland3 have done an immense amount of experimental work with this apparatus. Their work has had as principal object the determination of "contact curves." Contact curves are cartesian charts in which pH (or some other variable) is plotted against quantity of modifying agent. The rectangular area is broken into two or more curvilinear areas separated by the contact curve. The curve indicates that a sharp demarcation exists between conditions that bring about sticking of particles to bubbles and conditions that do not produce sticking. The type curve appears in the TRANSACTIONS as Fig. 1, page 248, volume 112. Wark and Cox offer data to show that the contact angle has a value determined by and characteristic of the agent used. Wark and Cox also make the statement that they believe this value is independent of concentration (ref. 2a, p. 209). They say: It is suspected that, given sufficient time and provided that there are no disturbing factors, the full ethyl xanthate angle (corresponding to a complete xanthate film) would be obtained in every case where contact occurs. Such a conclusion, if correct, would tend to substantiate the hypothesis of flotation collection by metathesis championed by Taggart and his associates4-8 and would argue against the adsorption hypothesis now adopted by Wark7 and by one of us.8 However, the data of Wark and Cox do not bear out the conclusion that there is a sharp passage from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. Rather, they indicate the existence of a transition zone of reagent concentration across which the contact angle varies with changes in reagent concentration from zero to a value near the maximum. This may be seen, for example, from Fig. 195 in the new text by one of us (ref. 8, p. 380), which presents the data of Wark and Cox in graphical form. The object of this study has been to explore the nature of the transition from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. The data of Wark and Cox to which reference has been made as showing that a gradual transition exists are marred by the fact that the region of critical-agent concentration is at an extremely small concentration. This condition suggests that diffusion may have played such a preponderant role that equilibrium was not reached within the time alloted. In the Wark and Cox data, the critical concentration was at about one part of xanthate per million parts of water. A series of Al-Cu alloys has been cast from constant superheat to solidify either with a hot top or with a free liquid/air interface. All the other variables which affect relative fluid motions were kept constant except the imposition of slow rotations m oscillations of the mold. Depending upon the exact circumstances, evi-dence could be found for the nucleation of equiaxed grains from dendrite bits detached from the columnar zone, or from the free surface, or from solid bits induced at pouring; a special experiment showed the solute buildup during ingot solidification and by inference the reality of constitutional supercooling. All methods of grain nucleation are thus supported. When solidification is arranged in a static mold the columnar- to-equiaxed transition occurs by one of these nucleation paths, subject to the natural decay of temperature gradients which promotes nucleation or the survival of nuclei. But when solidification is forced under special fluid flows it may display odd transitions. In one of these the equiaxed zone is synihesized from. dendrite bits detached from the solid/liquid interface. These survive under the concurrent lowering of temperature gradients and eventually cause transition by impeding columnar growth. GRAIN structure control is desired because real experience shows that specific properties are associated with specific cast grain structures. But since control is thus a matter of need and does not require understanding, much of casting remains art. For example, the manipulation of relative fluid motions in simple ingots provides a control of grain structure development,1-4 but theoretical insight is not required in order to broaden its potential applicability. Fortunately, however, once a variable like fluid flow is recognized it can also provide paths toward new insight. New observations using this variable have provided an insight which is curious. All the theories or descriptions of the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) seem to be supported as long as the appropriate experiment is carried out. In order to develop this idea, let us ignore segregation, the chill zone (until a later section of this paper), and the origin and development of the columnar zone.= The details of questioning how equiaxed material forms in a casting may be divided in two. The first part is simply a questioning of the origin for equi-axed grains: are there fresh nuclei from heterogeneous nucleation, or dendrite bits broken off or melted from the columnar zone or elsewhere,6 or other solid bits surviving from the outset of freezing? The second is more complex, a questioning of the CET: does columnar growth slow down and allow the dominance of equiaxed grains, however they are formed, or do equi-axed grains take over and force columnar growth to stop? This "chicken-or-the-egg" second question can be quite useful, especially because it allows us to delineate the ordinary or NATURAL EQUIAXED ZONE and the induced or SYNTHETIC EQUIAXED ZONE. A natural equiaxed zone occurs if solidification proceeds in the absence of disturbances or extraneous forces such as ultrasonics, stirrings, and so forth. Both the CET theory proposed by Winegard and Chal-mers, 7requiring constitutional supercooling, and the CET theory suggested by Chalmers,8 requiring nuclea-tion only on pouring, pertain to the natural equiaxed zone. The best collating evidence to date for both these theories is contained in the work by Biloni and Chal-mers;9,10 the former theory7 is supported by special versions of the unidirectional growth experiment performed by Plaskett and winegardl1 and the latter theory' is supported in detail for the solidification of small ingots. An equiaxed zone can be synthesized when disturbances caused by forced fluid flows2-4 or other artificial means9,10 break off or melt off dendrite tips from an advancing solid/liquid interface,* if (and only if) temperature gradients in the melt are (forcibly) reduced enough to ensure the survival of these bits of dendrites, 2'3 Willful disturbances even so trivial as those produced by rapping a mold might be included here; as will be shown for example, this follows Southin's suggestion that the free liquid/air interface

The Brewer mine, near Jefferson, Chesterfield County, S. C., was originally operated as a gold mine. As late as 1890 this mine was reported to have been one of the large gold producers in the southeast. Occurrence of topaz on the Brewer property was not reported until 1935, when it was discovered, by Parks3/ and Parks of the Federal Geological Survey while they were investigating gold deposits in the Piedmont province.

N. A. Degerstrom, Inc. has constructed and operated a processing plant approximately five miles north of Soda Springs, Idaho for processing a byproduct phosphate treater dust from Monsanto's elemental phosphorus plant, also located in Soda Springs. The plant is designed to produce agricultural-grade phosphoric acid, gallium, and silver. The design capacity of the plant is 54.4t (60 st) of treater dust per day, which can produce 16,326t (18,000 st) of phosphoric acid, 6,600 kg of gallium, and 6,033 kg (194,000 oz.) of silver per year.

Monitoring-While-Drilling (MWD) is a proven technique that records instantaneous on-drill parameters which can be used to supply contextual information for in-situ, down hole conditions, such as: changes in geology, the presence of pre-existing fractures and dynamic alterations, down hole conditions including bit bailing, bit blockages and bit wear, and improper drill operation. This technique has been widely used in the oil and gas industry and, eventually, it was transferred to the mining industry. A challenge when analyzing and interpreting MWD data is in utilizing proper filtering which enables one to properly eliminate any ?noise? from the signals of interest. Overall the importance of MWD data is that, through the collection of operational field-based data, a dataset can be acquired which allows experimentation and analysis to be carried out. Such a dataset is often impossible to replicate in a laboratory setting. If successful, and through iterative refinement, any promising method can eventually be implemented on-machine and using real-time monitoring techniques. This paper will provide a state of the art review of presently used MWD techniques and applications in industry. The paper?s primary focus will be on shallow, mining-style, blast hole drilling but will also take into account techniques and applications utilized in oil and gas drilling which have not been adopted in the mining industry. In the cases where MWD techniques and applications exist solely in oil and gas drilling the paper will examine and comment on the potential utility of technology transfer to mining applications.

The 23d annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 75 producers in 17 States re-ported commercial production of peat in 1956. Forty-seven producers reported humus production, 19 reported reed-sedge peat, 17 reported moss peat, and 1 reported muck. This total exceeds the number of active operations, but several producers reported recovering more than one type of peat. Fifty-five percent of the total production was reported as peat humus, 30 percent as reed-sedge peat, and 15 percent as moss peat. A negligible amount was reported as other types. More than one-fourth of the total output was raw peat with no preparation, other than having been air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, or kiln drying.

"The physical processes occurring in flotation columns are very complex as they take place at different scales over a range of sizes and multiple phases. Column design and optimum operating parameters are usually obtained from empirical studies and although progress has been made on its numerical modelling, most column models rely on simplifications that do not fully capture the hydrodynamics. In particular, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of the pulp phase in flotation usually assume the bubble population to be monodispersed. While this assumption may be reasonable in some situations, the polydispersed nature of the gas phase can have a significant impact on the predicted flotation rates.Techniques to model size distribution do exist in the literature and have been rigorously analysed in the past two decades for bubble columns, which are very similar to flotation columns from a hydrodynamics point of view. In fact, available CFD models of flotation columns are an extension of bubble column models, sometimes including additional equations for solids treated as passive scalars. This work focuses on the development of an efficient CFD model for flotation columns. The bubble size distribution in the column has been modelled using the Population Balance Equation (PBE), which is solved using the Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMOM). Coupled with the PBE, the multiphase flow equations in the column have been modelled using the standard Eulerian–Eulerian approach. The solution of this coupled system has been made tractable in this work with the implementation of a highly parallelised adaptive-mesh finite element method. This powerful framework has been implemented in the open source CFD code Fluidity and it allows the carrying out of detailed simulations of flotation columns in 2D and 3D, with important implications for industrial column evaluation and design."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a method to measure methane and other gases during the auger mining of coal. An intrinsically safe commercial gas detector with a built-in data logger was mounted in the center of the hollow conveying auger. A sampling head through the wall of the auger conducted a gas sample to the detector. Results showed that gas levels can be monitored on a continuous basis during the auger mining of coal and the data retrieved upon completion of the hole.

Large volumes of tailings are produced annually by the goldmining industry of Western Australia. This material ishydraulically discharged into large storage facilities usingsub-aerial deposition methods. Much of the gold comes fromhighly weathered rock, resulting in tailings with significant claycontents. Consolidation of these materials can be very slow,particularly if occurring under the effects of self-weight alone.To optimise the consolidation behaviour of the tailings, disposalstrategies can take advantage of the effects of evaporation byallowing each tailings layer to dry before the next layer isdeposited. In the last 20 years, much of the gold processing inWestern Australia has utilised saline groundwater. As the salinetailings dry, the surface will develop a thin salt crust. Laboratorytests have shown that these crusts can drastically reduce thesurface evaporation, adversely affecting the behaviour of thestorage. This problem has been the focus of an extensive researchprogramme, with the objective of obtaining a fullerunderstanding of the mechanisms controlling the coupledconsolidation and evaporation behaviour of saline gold tailings.Part of this study involved site investigations of a wide range ofstorages to ascertain their current states. Methods of gainingaccess to the tailings following deposition were developed.In situ testing and high quality sampling were conducted on each storage and samples returned to the laboratory for analysis. These investigations have enabled full characterisation of the storages to be accomplished. Examples of data are shown herein and the implications of the results are discussed.

Modern mineral exploration depends on multidisciplinary 3-dimensional integration of geological and geophysical data. Identification of the geological sources of geophysical anomalies requires knowledge of the physical properties fingerprint of rock types, formations and their alteration products. Understanding how and why rock physical properties vary within the Earth's subsurface ensures that appropriate geophysical exploration methods can be chosen, and allows for more efficient and effective surveys to be designed. Physical properties knowledge is integral to geophysical modeling - measured data or values estimated based on geological understanding are used to produce realistic forward calculations and to constrain inversion models. Mira Geoscience and the Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with industry and academia, are building a Rock Properties Database System (rpds.mirageoscience.com). It compiles the most valuable physical properties for mineral exploration (density, porosity, magnetic susceptibility and remanence, electrical resistivity and chargeability) linked with location and lithological metadata. A critical knowledge gap, addressed in this study, concerns the dependence of physical properties on alteration and mineralization processes. We report on the results of a collaborative University of British Columbia - Geoscience British Columbia project, ?Integrated Geological & Geophysical Porphyry Models: Adding Value to Geoscience BC Geophysical Data?. As part of the QUEST and QUEST-West geophysical initiatives, Geoscience BC focused detailed geophysical surveys on a suite of six known porphyry deposits: Mount Milligan, Endako, Huckleberry, Bell, Granisle, and Morrison. Physical properties for a set of 269 samples of characteristic host rocks and their altered equivalents were measured. The causes of physical properties variations were investigated through their correlations with ore and alteration mineralogy determined from thin-section observations and X-ray diffraction analyses. Physical properties of variably altered host-rocks and intrusive rocks vary significantly between different BC porphyry deposits. No specific unifying geophysical model exists that can be uniformly applied during exploration. Knowledge of local background geology and local physical properties variations is necessary as host-rocks and intrusive rock compositions vary depending on magmatic affinities, and alteration styles will vary reflecting host-rock compositions, crustal depth and influence of meteoric water. A district-scale exploration strategy requires location of intrusive bodies, which are commonly magnetic, resistive and low in density. Correlations should not be expected between density and magnetic susceptibility, because alteration may lead to magnetite destruction or to secondary magnetite development. Deposit-scale ground geophysics might image potassic alteration zones that can be magnetic in both alkalic and calcalkalic systems. Low magnetic susceptibilities, resistivities and densities might aid in locating the typically more porous phyllic and argillic zones. All geophysical data must be interpreted with background knowledge of local rock types and in light of the expected deposit model and associated magmatic and hydrothermal processes. The most effective means to building physical properties knowledge prior to geophysical investigation remains collecting rock physical properties measurements. The cost of rock properties data collection is low, relative to the overall costs of running a mineral exploration program, and can provide an important framework for design of geophysical surveys, survey method selection, geophysical modelling, and data interpretation.

The ground forces generated by a properly installed and tensioned mine roof truss assembly can provide permanent mine roof support, even in severe ground conditions, either by direct suspension of the rock loads within the potential failure zone above the mine opening or indirect reinforcement of the natural rock arch that tends to form within the immediate mine roof. Notable advancements in mine roof truss support systems hardware and design technology have occurred since the introduction of the in situ mine roof truss concept for permanent mine roof support in 1966. The systematic installation of mine roof truss support systems has proven to be a very effective method of mine roof control room and pillar mines under a wide variety of ground conditions, even in areas otherwise considered unmineable because of severe roof control problems. Properly designed mine roof truss systems have also been used for permanent support of mine slopes and haulage tunnels.

ALTHOUGH the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approxi-mately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cementite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consider-ation of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:1 C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850° C. for varying periods of time. An ongoing research program into surface subsidence over Room and Pillar coal mining is described. A subsidence monitoring network has been established for one Room and Pillar mine in the West Moreton Coal Field of South East Queensland, at which pillar extraction is being conducted. The maximum measured subsidence to 28 January 1986 was 638 mm, with movement continuing. Analysis of the monitoring data with view to application of the subsidence pre- diction theory developed by Kowalczyk (1972) is discussed. The Kowalczyk theory provides predictions of subsidence depression, slope of surface, horizontal displacement, surface curvature and horizontal strain, for both the Partial and Total Settlement cases. The development of subsidence with time is also investigated and a preliminary analysis conducted.

"INTRODUCTION In February 1945, Captain (now Commodore) W. G. Greeman, U. S. N., Director, Naval Petroleum and Oil 3hale Reserves, requested the Bureau of Mines to assist the Navy in its wartime development of Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Elk Hills field, Calif., to assure adequate supplies of petroleum products in the Pacific theatre. Unit Operation 4/,engineers desired pressure volume-temperature and viscosity data on the reservoir oil in the shallow oil zone to augment data previously obtained for the purpose of calculating reservoir performance and oil reserves. Accordingly, arrangements were approved by the Operating Committee far, the Bureau of Mines to proceed with a program of field sampling and laboratory determinations designed to obtain the desired information.To carry out the assignment, the Bureau transferred the necessary person¬nel, subsurface pressure, temperature, and sampling instruments, and laboratory equipment for analyzing subsurface oil samples from the Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., and the San Francisco, Calif., office and set up a temporary field headquarters in the Elk Hills. The program of work as out-lined by Unit Operation required the 6 months period March-August 1945 to complete during which time individual reports comprising data on pressure-volume-temperature relationships and reservoir oil viscosities as determined on subsurface oil samples and recombined oil and gas samples for 5 selected wells were submitted to Unit Operation.This report is a summary compilation of the data contained in the original reports supplemented by correlations of some of the physical properties of the reservoir oil with the A.P.I. gravities of the produced oil. The report also includes material-balance calculations relative to one of the oil horizons in the shallow zone. The Bureau of Mines believes that publication of the results of these analyses is a worthwhile contribution to the petroleum literature and of particular interest to the California industry."
